Tight ends: Orson Charles reprises high school role as Murray’s target
6:00 am June 16, 2010, by Tim Tucker
(Third in a summer series looking at Georgia’s football team by position.)
TODAY: TIGHT ENDS
- Returning starter: Junior Aron White started 12 games last season, but sophomore Orson Charles is currently listed No. 1 on the depth chart.
- Others to watch: Junior Bruce Figgins returns after redshirting last season due to shoulder surgery and a six-game suspension, and sophomore Arthur Lynch showed in the spring that he is ready to contribute, too.
- Key fact: Charles caught 75 passes for 1,440 yards and 21 touchdowns as a senior at Tampa’s Plant High School -– most of them from Aaron Murray, his quarterback then and now. Georgia is counting on that tandem connecting a lot this season and beyond.
- Key question: Will the offense get maximum benefit from the depth of talent at tight end, taking some of the burden off a talented but not-so-deep group of wide receivers?
- Recent developments: Not surprisingly, the Bulldogs worked a lot during the spring with two-tight-end alignments. And sometimes, as Murray described it at one point, “we’ll come out with two tight ends and [the defense] thinks we’re going to be in a two-tight formation and we split one out or split two out. It causes a lot of confusion [for the defense], just because of their athleticism.”
- Outlook: Maybe the deepest position on the team, consisting of four players with complementary skills. Charles, who has the talent to be an All-SEC player, and White, who caught two touchdown passes in the Independence Bowl victory over Texas A&M, should be big weapons as receivers. Figgins and Lynch are known more for their blocking, although Lynch -– rated the nation’s no. 2 TE prospect by Rivals.com coming out of high school in Dartmouth, Mass. — caught a memorable TD pass in the G-Day game.
- Your turn: What say you about the tight ends?

Offensive line: With 155 career starts, the strength of the team?
Wide receivers: Green’s final season and Brown’s breakout season?

Undoubtedly the best set of TE’s in the country. Should be easy targets for Murray, and I’m one who feels that Murray is going to have an outstanding year.

I sure hope Bobo & Co. incorporate the shovel pass that UF perfected with Tebow and Hernandez. With this group, I would borrow every trick in everybody’s playbook to get the ball to any one of our talented TEs. Lynch sure looks like he knows what to do with the ball when he gets it, and he is probably expected to block when he is in there, thus making a shovel to him a better surprise.

Great dept, hope we utilize them, especially Lynch, would hate to waste his talents as a reciever. What if they add Rome to the mix next year? Great to be a Bulldawg. By the way, its hotter than a dog here in Iraq.

Arthur Lynch is a very good receiver if they would ever throw him the ball and he is much larger than Charles who is hybrid WR and White who is tall but lean. Figgins is a great blocker who can catch over the middle. UGA is recruiting TE Rome (Valdosta, Ga.) heavily and would probably red shirt him his first year as White and Figgins will be seniors Rome’s freshman year. That would leave Charles, Lynch and Figgins for Rome to compete with his redshirt freshman year and Rome would likely be the starter his sophomore year.. Rome is ranked as either the #1 or #2 TE in the country and his father Stan Rome was one of the most recruited athletes ever to come out of Georgia – in both football and basketball.

looking forward to seeing Murray & Charles hook up again like they did in HS. I see Figgins though as the odd man out in this situation. You could start White/Charles/Lynch as your TE’s OR since our depth at WR is low, use Charles as the Flex WR/TE

Speaking of remarkable catches by the TE, I made the voyage to Baton rouge 2 years ago with a friend sitting I might add in the LSU section of Tiger stadium far removed from my own Dawg fans and support group. Stafford and the Dawgs offense were in the shadow of their own goal line. Dawgs were clinging to a slight lead and the game was still yet to be decided. On a third down play Tiger stadium roared as the Dawgs came up to the line. And we hit the big tight end Aron White for a big gain as thier corner finally wrestled him to the ground but not before it gave the Dawgs a lot of real estate and a fresh set of downs. It was a huge turning point in the game that we would go on to win. I recall vividly jumping from my seat to cheer on my Dawgs and was told in a rather vulgar matter sit down as the natives had become restless. What better way to spend an afternoon come October.

Thinking ahead to the GA-FLA game, Murray and Charles will be playing against some of the same players they whipped in high school. I saw the extra spark in Ealey and King in the GT game last year. Those high school blood feuds are a great motivator, not that one is needed in that game, but it is something to look for.

Let me go ahead and get it out of the way before the techies have time to post:
GT’s TE’s are the best in the world
Tech has won 76 more NC’s than UGA
We won a game once (have the ring to prove it)
UGA’s TE’s are thugs
GT has the smallest testicles in Div-I
CPJ has a bigger bra size than CMR
There, now we won’t have to worry about the nerds…
I think the TE’s, and the secondary WR’s are going to be the catalyst for UGA’s offense. With everyone expecting run, and double teaming AJ, these 2 positions are going to see a lot of action. Orson Charles can also be used in a receiver role, which makes him twice as dangerous. The offense is going to be just fine.
PS- Thanks Army Dawg for your service from a former Marine. Be safe, and don’t eat the Charms…

Murray will hit whoever is open, and won’t zero in on Charles just because they went to school together. I used to watch these two at some of the Nike 7 on 7 games where they mix the best players, and the vast majority were trying to get on the Murray & Charles’ team. Murray got the ball to the open guy and never forced the ball to Charles, just in case some of you are worried about Murray playing favorites.
The year before Charles played at Plant, there was another kid who went to Auburn by the name of Winter’s who caught 95 passes. Winter’s reminded me of Fred Biletnikoff the way he always seemed to get open. Although these 2 caught the majority of the passes, the other receivers, if open, were thrown the ball. Plant used the pass to move the ball in lieu of running the ball, so there were plenty of balls to go around. As a matter of fact, Murray was the leading rusher his junior season gaining almost 1,000 yds and averaging about 10 yds a carry. Not too bad for a Midget and someone who’s always hurt LOL.
By the end of the season, after Murray gets some games under his belt, I think all of the receivers, the team, and the coaches are going to see a high powered offense with a balanced attack. UGA should be moving the sticks, the D will be on the sidelines, and all the fans should be happy.
The next few years will be fun to watch.

I think its going to be difficult for people to realize the level and amount of offensive talent this team possesses because there aren’t going to be enough touches to go around for everyone.
There are at least two big league running backs, at least 6 talented WR, and 4 TE that could start most for anyone in the country. Getting the ball around to 12 players enough for them to be recognized for their talent is going to be difficult. But possibly not as difficult as it’s going to be for the defense to get the right personnel groups into position.
I am asking partially out of ignorance because I am not as familiar with teams in other conferences, but where is offensive talent at this level and this deep?? Not at AL. Not at FL. Other teams may have individuals that are more talented. But as a group, 2 deep, where is there more offensive talent than here? Can you imagine these 5-10 corners and nickels trying to cover a TE and Durham and AJ? See the Falcons from last year and you’ll learn it ain’t happening. With the schedule, some luck, fewer injuries and if the defense comes along, this could be a momentum changing year.

Athletic tight ends who can operate in space and down field create lots of problems for defenses…..see Tony Gonzalez and Antonio Gates. In college, they create even more confusion in coverages, as well as creating mismatches in personnel. Orson Charles should have a huge year, and so should Aron White – if he stops dropping easy passes.
A big fast tight end running up the seams of a defense is a beautiful thing if you’re an offense, but it is a nightmare for a defense.

We’ve got playmakers so let’s make some damn plays and do it when it counts, not just against some sissy Georgia Tech defense. I want to see BIG plays in BIG games. I’m going to give it to the haters on one thing. UGA football has been a whole lot of hype the past two years and not much meaningful production. Sometimes the haters do have a point. I’m just tired of all the talking.
After a solid two decades of being a huge college football fan I can no longer bear the summer. It is like Chinese water torture and horrible. Preseason mags are a joke. With the running game and tight ends, UGA should have great success with time of possession and passing game, two aspects integral in the development of a young QB. The thing that impresses me the most about Charles and White is that they can run extremely well after making catches. And it appears Lynch can as well.

Overall, i think this offense has the ability to be better than our 2007-2008 offenses with MS and KM. It all depends on the play of AM. He has a better overall supporting cast than Stafford did. If we could have had the experience of the OL in 2008 then i think we would have won the NC.

Our offense as a whole is full of so much talent. Depth maybe slacking in some positions but we have key players in key position. I hope that CMR got his hands on Murray personaly this off season and in early fall practice. Got to admit, CMR is a good QB coach. Hope BoBo didnt mess it up too bad. If we can be less predictable we will be ok. Our offense really hasn’t been bad offer the past few years. Even with Cox throwing so many INT we still put up points. Our D will make or break us. I think a good formation for Murray would be a Single TE set with White on the line. Green to WR left, Durahm Right, Charles SE Right, Ealey beside him in the shotgun. So many options from there. Stop and goes, cross underneath, and still be able to scramble. Whatcha think guys?

I couldn’t believe my ears when I heard about that incident with the Tech lineman in the 90’s. It was one of the more horrific things I’ve ever heard of a football player doing. The Tech lie machine did an excellent job of sweeping that one under the rug. I had never heard of it until just recently. That guy was human trash and an excellent representative of The Institute. When we were winning SEC titles we had excellent tight ends. This is what I think has been missing from Bobo’s gameplan for awhile (or we didn’t have the horses). Remember how much damage Pope and Watson used to do on the long playaction post routes over the middle? They would catch a 20 yard pass and rumble through the defensive backfield. Charles has this ability to be a real problem for defenses. Too big for the fast, too fast for the big.

I’m old school… the effective use of TEs opens up the entire offense. It creates passing opportunities in the middle of the field, adds additional responsibilites for the LBs/DBs, and is effective in the Red Zone. It would help Murray and the running game to have that aspect of the offense working well. Tim, I agree with you… it may be our deepest position on the team… good article.

I dig old school too. Out tight ends, fullbacks can carry a load, blocking and then, peeling off in the flats for nice gainers. This ought to be like stealing. With the runs, the intermediate stuff and this scheme, UGA ought to be fine.
If the D does play a passionate, inspired game, every game, UGA has a chance to do very well, then come 2011 shoot for the moon. Man, are we gathering up the players. I know that Coach TG will land some D side blue chips from Georgia.

The lil girl whuppin in the Ross era 1990s was with THREE GT linemen. I can still name them but will not as one is deceased. They punched the girl unmercifully and she needed major recon surgery on her head. Her boy friend and an off duty cop ALSO were ruined by these three punks.
Yes, the Tech folks pushed this under the rug and I know they do not like the mention of it because it was horrific. Ask any reasonable GT grad over age 45 or 50 and they will frown in shame.

Any time we are in a two TE set, the defense will not know what we plan to do. Our formation can switch to a 3 WR set at the last second… or we line up OC as the FB and switch to 4 wide just before the snap.
Charles and White are so diverse in their skill sets that the combinations are really unlimited.

I’ve never felt that Bobo has utilized the TE position as well as he could, especially lately. The TE’s were a big part of Jim’s Donnan’s offenses in the 90’s and they were sometimes the leading receivers in games. Richt also had some good TE’s early on with Randy McMichael, Ben Watson, and Leonard Pope( the Dawgs wouldn’t have beaten the Vols in 2001 without McMichael coming up with 2 huge catches during that drive). I wouldn’t be opposed to the Dawgs implenting a 2 TE set, especially in short yardage and goal line situations. It really gives the defense something else to think about in terms of play action as well as allowing for WR’s to get better man on man matchups down field.

All of the UGA haters that insist that THE mark of a quality program is a NC over the last 4 or 5 years. Well, then, um, ah, that leaves out about 99% of all major universities.
UGA needs to win one for sure BUT we grads ( key word is GRAD ) love our alma mater and no matter what, we have the tailgating traditions that go on with my kids, now in their mid 20s and my old UGA pals and their kids. LIfe is quite good being an old, middle aged UGA grad. Golf, sailing and some travel to Europe ain’t bad, my friends.
UGA is the ONLY SCHOOL to win at least 8 games or more over 13 years in a row. That is remarkable, given that it does include the last couple of Jim Donnan years or with two H Coaches.
UGA is the 5th or 6th winningest team in the last 10 years and is a top $$$ school and we are in major bowls most every year. OUr stadium seats around 90,000 fans and we ared usually FULL …… haters.
Facts are facts and here is one more fact ………..the haters are jealous of UGA and they have NO EDUCATION, so they come on here to bash UGA and hate. geeeeeeeeez, sign up for some JC and get an education.

Florida runs a spread offense which allows them more “run and shoot” options, you don’t get that with the pro style offense. However, I’m sure Richt will fid a way to use the TE’s more this season.

the TE position is one that is never ultilized how it should be. Orson charles is a terrific player, but afterall last season he was a freshman. So the coaches were hesistant.
We don’t have a deep threat, and we don’t know how deep the QB’s can throw. King and Ealey will establish the running game and the TE’s can take us further.

Orson Charles vs. Tony Gonzales
Sr. Yr High School Stats:
Tony: 62 catches, 945 yards, 15 ypc, 13 td’s, 20% passes to td ratio
Orson: 75 catches, 1440 yards, 19 ypc, 21 td’s, 28% passes to td ratio
if Richt had Tony Gonzales at UGA, he’d throw him 20 passes a season.
Tony averaged 80 passes a season in the NFL for about 1000 yards, and 6 td’s.
If Orson Charles was on Florida, BYU, or Arkansas, he’d get 50-70 touches. Those guys use the talent on their ball club. They get the ball to playmakers.
Not Richt. He likes to rotate his playmakers and sit them on the bench.

TE utilization is not the reason UGA didn’t do well last year. Florida didn’t win the SEC Championship, Arkansas didn’t win the SEC Championship, and BYU didn’t win the Mountain West Championship. And they would not have won their respective conferences even with Orson Charles.
He’s a huge weapon for us. He’s an added dimension for us, a WR at the TE position. But he’s not the reason we will or will not win the East…

Alabama uses their RB’s for passes. Like to see Ealey get 25 catches this season. Have to figure out a low risk way to get the ball to playmakers.
Alabama throws to Ingram 25 times.
Florida does the shovel pass to the TE a lot.
They use their playmakers.
Richt, not so much. AJ–Ealey–Orson, 3 of the most productive players in the SEC, all had limited touches last season.

Offensive Playmaker =
1) Don’t fumble (think of Ingram or Tebow or Hernandez)
2) Be productive (Ingram gets 6 ypc rushing and 10 ypc receiving)
Florida or Alabama do not reward people who don’t protect the ball with more touches, no matter how “productivre” they are, the risk exceeds the reward.
Guys like Caleb King & Joe Cox & Branden Smith would have never seen the light of day at Florida or Alabama.
Georgia has some offensive playmakers who excel in production AND ball protection, Richt just doesn’t get them the ball enough.
Ingram got 300 touches last year.
Tebow got 14 carries a game, plus 20 passes a game, 34 touches a game.
Ingram- 300 touches
Ealey- 125
Consider Ealey was ALMOST as productive as Ingram at 5.7 ypc rushing & 7.7 ypc receiving, Ingram was 6.1 ypc rsrushing & 7.7 ypc, both protect the ball superbly.
Tebow 476 touches
Orson 23 touches

Washaun Ealey is an excellent football player and a young man of good character. So is Caleb King. Aaron Murray lives and breaths football 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and is a true leader. Orson Charles is a genetic freak, and a fine citizen. There is not another team in the SEC that has the depth at tight end that Georgia has. Offensive line is very experienced. Georgia has lots of wide receivers, including A. J. Green, the best receiver in all of college football. Todd Grantham is coaching the defense. I watched Georgia practice several times in the Spring, and Coach Grantham has the defense very focused. Folks, we are about to have a good season. GATA!

CMR needs to go to mis-matches—usually TE or RB for passes—best DB will be on AJ—best mis-match will be an LB trying to run and catch Orson, Aaron, Wooten, Tavarres, Caleb or Washaun.
Throwing dump pass to RB’s or TE’s for big gains will drive blitzers nuts. Murray will get a lot of that in the SC & Ark games, if he’s ready, he can really burn these guys for big plays off of simple dump checkdown passes.
Throws to RB’s need to be closer to the sidelines away from the defense, like Florida does.

Ealey- 125
Uh yea, Ealey was a freshman who only was able to play in the last 9 games. Ingram the feature back from day one in 14 games.
A more fair comparison would be the year before as a freshman as well:
Ingram 14 game 143 attempts 728 yds
Ealey 9 game 125 attempts 728 yrd
In case you can’t figure it out, Richt got Ealey more touches per game than Saban did with his future Heisman talent.
I guess you missed the fact that AJ Greene was hurt much of the year too.
To sit there and try to say that Mark Richt is too stupid to get the ball to his best playmaker is about as silly as it gets.

Wow, lots of comments on what CMR needs to do to the offense.
Everyone does realize that, even with All-Thumbs Joe Cox at QB in 2009, UGA LED THE LEAGUE IN SCORING IN SEC GAMES with 234 points. (tied with Arkansas.)
Other than JC at QB, the other offensive issues are easily addressable, i.e. Bobo calling the same 8 plays most of the time….etc.
The offense led the league in scoring…. the problem was the defense gave up 252 points, WORST IN THE SEC.
With CMR back to his old schedule of attending the offensive meetings during the week, the O is just fine.
P.S. 1980 Dawg good synopsis/comments

CMR needs suggestions galore. He should be reading this blog. CMR sure ain’t figured out how to get his offense going yet. He was supposed to be some kind of offensive guru when he came in. Sure, he played in the ACC, and the SEC has much tougher defenses. But still, no one expected him to finish so middle of the pack in so many SEC areas. CMR needs suggestions. He does NOT know how to fix it, or what the problem is.
It might seem obvious to say Florida goes 13-1 when their best TE has more than 65 catches and 9-4 when they don’t, but since Richt has never had a TE catch 65 catches in a season, I’d say he hasn’t noticed this, and needs to try it out.
When Florida is scoring @38 points a game, and Richt is scoring @29, he hasn’t figured out his offense yet.

Except that UF also won a NC in 2006 and 2008 when the TE position only had around 30 rec. Richt’s worst (w/l record) had around 40 rec from the TE. That doesn’t really back up you point now does it?

UF went to the SECCG because they gave up 96 points in their 8 SEC games, SECOND best in the SEC, and they lost, Alabama, who gave up only 85 points in their 8 SEC games (BEST/LOWEST in the SEC.)
The offense needs “tinkering” the defense was our issue, hence, when you are WORST in the league, 3 out of 4 coaches get fired. Defense wins championships, not 10-12 extra passes to the TE.
