Required donation for new UGA football season tickets drops to $1,550

From the stratospheric level of two years ago, the donation required to get new Georgia football season tickets has fallen to earth.

UGA said Friday that the minimum lifetime donation needed to qualify for the right to buy first-time season tickets this year is $1,550 –- down dramatically from $10,651 in 2008 and $4,205 in 2009.

As reported by the AJC last week, Georgia officials attribute the fall to two factors: the Bulldogs’ disappointing ‘09 season and the struggling economy.

The way the process works is that all of the previous year’s season-ticket holders retain the right to renew their seats if they make a prescribed annual donation to the UGA Athletic Association’s “Hartman Fund” -– a minimum of $250 per seat, more for prime locations. But becoming a first-time season-ticket buyer is costlier because new orders are filled from the limited supply of non-renewals on the basis of prospective buyers’ lifetime Hartman Fund donations, starting with the highest and continuing until no tickets remain.

The contribution level of the person getting the last available pair of adjacent season tickets becomes the cutoff — a closely watched figure among some Georgia fans.

In 2008, amid the hype of a preseason No. 1 ranking, there were only 804 non-renewals and so much demand for those seats that the contributions cutoff rose from $1,991 in 2007 to the much-talked-about $10,651. In 2009, the number of non-renewals increased to 1,560. This year, coming off an 8-5 season, there were 2,021 non-renewals.

Still, there weren’t enough vacated seats to fill all of the orders that were received before the March 31 deadline.

Season tickets again are sold out, and orders for first-time tickets from people with lifetime donations of less than $1,550 will be refunded.

Overall,  contributions this year totaled $22.8 million, down from $23.3 million last year and a record $26.1 million in 2008.

Georgia athletics director Damon Evans said recently that it’s hard to quantify the relative impacts of the economy and the ‘09 season on this year’s decline in donations.

“Look back a couple of years ago. We were preseason No. 1 [and] had beaten Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl -– a big win and a great season -– and thing spiked up,” Evans said. “The support is still there, but I just think when people are excited and when people have a little bit more expendable income, they’ll put more toward their ticket priority. Right now, with the economy and so forth, people are a little bit more hesitant. But we’ll still be sold out.”

You’d have to think if the price goes down below $1000, and cancellations go above 3000, Evans would have to fire Richt. Another bad season, and these 2 could both fall dramatically. When Richt is COSTING the University tens of millions in lost revenue, they’ll have to make a move. He’s close. Alabama’s not getting hit hard by the economy, so that’s an excuse.

2000 seats x $10,000 = $20 million ($10k was price a few years ago)
2000 seats x $1000 = $2 million ($1500 is price now, could drop to $1000 if bad season again)

Richt cost Georgia $20 million in lost revenue this season.

Well first off, they university charges WAY too much for season tickets! It’s corporate greed. Be that as it may, $20 million is bad! I remember talking to my friend last year about how bad the defense was and I said to him there is NO WAY Willie will be around next year because donors will revolt and the university will lose money! It’s one thing to go 8-5. It’s another to get blown out in rivalry games, have a defensive coordinator who gives up tons of points, and a coach who won’t do what is necessary to improve his team. Donors are sick and tired of seeing a slack a$$ organization week in and week out!

Overall contributions…

2010- 22.8 million
2009- 23.3 million
2008- 26.1 million
2007- 23.5 million

10’s of millions? Not sure of the math.

Most of the non-renewals are people who cut their number of tickets (i.e. from 8 season tickets to 4).

Last One Out – Your math skills are pretty astounding. Look at the quoted numbers for contributions $26.1M (2008 record setting level of donations) – $22.8M (2010 contributions) = $3.1M difference. The $22.8M is only $700K less than the 2007 level. The university only refunds the price of your tickets if you don’t meet the level of donations required to get tickets. So you are completely misunderstanding the whole situation.

You don’t have 2000 available tickets at $10,651. As everyone should have learned in Economics 101, reduced supply drives up prices.

10,651 x 804 = 8,563,404.
4,205 x 1,560 = 6,559,800.
1,550 x 2,021 = 3,132,550.

Still a big difference, but not $18,000,000. I would hope that the Athletic Association considers the inflated cutoffs for the past two years to have been windfalls, and not the “new normal”.

Hey Taylor Wooten – Are you serious? You are an idiot. Let me help you out with an analogy. If you want to join an exclusive golf club, you have to donate money upfront. Your upfront donation gives you the “right” to pay your monthly dues to play golf. They don’t just let you pay when you want to play. If you want to play golf at the local municipal course, that is a different story. Similar to watching a game a Tech. Have fun watching on TV.

All of your math is wrong. These are based on lifetime contributions. If you have never given then your price was 10k, but most people who wanted season tickets had probably already given money in the past and thus the price was much lower. If you had never given to the hartman fund then to get a season ticket you would have to give $1550 to get your spot in line today, but if you had given 400 in the past then the price is only 1150… So this is not a one time 20 million dollar windfall…you have to compare todays money versus yesterdays money, the impact of this I am sure is very very small in todays money because that means the last season ticket holder to get an oppurtunity has paid 1550 to the university. If someone else gives up their tickets than the next person in line who gave $1549 will get a shot at it. If the person who has given 1549 had given 2 more dollars he would have gotten his tickets before the person at 1550, the real impact in todays money being $2…not 1550 or 10k in that situation. I would be surprised if the real impact of this whole thing even peaks near 1 million..

btugadog

11:14 am

Hold on guys! The non-renewals do NOT mean that the seats are not sold. It means that they were not renewed and that the seats are then sold to the next person in line ready to buy them. And, it could actually mean more money to the school for the particular seat. For example, my two seats have a renewal minimum associated to them of $325.00 per seat. If I decided not to renew them they could then possibly be sold to a new person who would have to have donated at least $1,550 life time to be a new first time buyer.

“Will Evans keep Richt if non-renewals continue to climb?” The real question to ask IMO is “Will Evans keep Richt if seats are empty and generate no revenue?” As long as someone is standing in line to buy these then I don’t think that will be a cause for Richt to lose his job.

Taylor – 80% of the donation is tax deductible. And, remember, there is no Soccer, Swimming, Volleyball, W basketball, and a whole lot of other things if there is not a Hartman Fund.

Like my older and wiser brother always says “when they say it ain’t about the money… it about the money!” It ALWAYS about the money!!!!!!

Go DAWGS!

The math is all wrong, sorry. The $1,550 is the minimum level of ‘life time contributions’ to grab season tickets as a first time buyer. Returning season ticket holders are still contributing $ also, as it says minimum of $250 per seat. Nothing is said to indicate how many prior season ticket holders returned or how much their contributions generated of the quoted $23.3 mil for 2009.

The $1,550 is the cutoff, some who get 1st time tickets this year would have contributed more. Anyone with an application for new season tickets under the $1,550 mark, order does not get filled & funds are returned. Nothing is said about the average or mean donation level for new 1st time ticket buyers.

To reiterate, the actual drop in Hartman Fund contributions was $500,000 this year — from last year’s $23.3M to this year’s $22.8M. The cutoff level to qualify for first-time season tickets is a function of supply (how many seats available from non-renewals) and demand (how many new orders received and the lifetime contributions levels of those ordering).

You people are stupid and obviously NOT UGA season ticket holders. The $10,000 is a LIFETIME Hartman fund donation, not an annual contribution. Season ticket holders accrue points based on the amount of money given to UGA in their lifetime. That is how priority seats are chosen as well as away game tickets, bowl games, and GA-FL.
The cut-off several years ago was $10,651 NOT donated in one year, but a total of all donations that person made over the years.

It’s absurd to think that the spike in non-renewals is CMR’s fault. One would have to consider that the economy downturn plays a much much larger part in the equation. I would also think that many of the baby boomers (long time ticket holders) are entering into retirement (aka fixed income) and may decide to give up their tickets as their income has been reduced. This would happen in any economy, not just a downturn.

I really have to laugh at the haters.

First of all, it’s not a 3rd upper deck. Second, the upper deck is UGA is small compared to Auburn, South Carolina, Alabama, and LSU. The top of the 3rd deck at UGA is roughly the same height as the top of the upper deck at those schools.

And I don’t believe season tickets are sold for the top seats in the 3rd deck. Those are usually given to the visiting team.

Such stupid commentary!!!!

This previously posted info covers much of it.

Overall contributions…

2010- 22.8 million
2009- 23.3 million
2008- 26.1 million
2007- 23.5 million

10’s of millions? Not sure of the math.

To that end, has anyone noticed the economy, lately. How bout the unemployment rate in Ga? Might that have just a little bit of something to do withit? Ya think?

Sheeesh! Get a grip.

BTW, my 3 season tickets cost me right at $1500, for the year. Not 10k or $1550 per. Again, silliness.

Lastly, UGA is SO far from being in money trouble it aint even funny. To that end we’re in the top 5 of those WITH $.

Last year, the pirate, Adams, sucked off a considerable number of student seats and converted them to season tickets at the 10K price range. The number of season tickets increased at the expense of students, whom I think were limited to three games in the category of TN Tech, LA Monroe, etc. The number of season tickets went up, and the economy went bad combined with a sloppy season. Now the IRS is looking into several of the scams associated with concessions, including Adams’ sweetheart deal with Regent Leebron for Bulldog bottled water.

”Contributions required for Tech season tickets? None.”

Well, technically, that is true; but they do have a donation attached if you want to sit in some of the fairly good seats on either side of the field. The price is $150 per seat up to $350 per seat – and most of those seat/tickets are sold out at Tech.

You can get the upper deck endzone tickets at face value without a contribution, however.

The reasons for this year’s continued decline, a rise in ticket cancellations and a decline in donations. Georgia attributes both factors to the economy and the team’s disappointing 2009 season.
Fans wouldn’t give up some of their niceties in life, they had rather dip snuff and spit, than attend a UGA game in a town they have never been to, and cant find on the map! Most think buying a 2 dollar t-shirt or cap at dollar general, or local gas station “contribution enough”.

I see some red flags here.

1) Non-renewals have INCREASED by 250% in 2 years
2) Donations requirement has dropped from $10,500 to $1500–85% drop

As Evans points out, it’s related to performance of the team.

Evans is also right, that a lot of that blame is on him:
1) Not giving Richt enough $$ to recruit world class staff
2) Scheduling–UGA had #4 toughest schedule last season, Alabama & Florida were out of top 35.
3) Scheduling the Florida game IN FLORIDA every year
4) Scheduling too many hard games in the first 3 games (Compare to Florida last 3 years or this year)
5) Not promoting legitimate heisman candidates to national media (AJ
& Ealey this year should be getting a big push)

Last One Out: It’s pretty obvious your math is faulty. UGA hasn’t lost tens of millions of dollars. In fact, UGA has one of the most financially solid athletic departments in Div-I. As for Alabama, winning a NC certainly helps, but there aren’t as many alternatives for entertainment dollars as there are in Georgia.

The economy is hitting every one hard. You may not remember this but several Div-I schools saw attendance and contributions drop last year and they’re having similar results this year. Also, CBS lost money on the NCAA basketball tournament with decreases in ad sales and it is trying to partner or dump the tournament to ESPN.

Yes, the numbers dropped a little and 2009 was a disappointing season. But compared to Tech, which won its conference and lost in a larger bowl, UGA still brought in more dollars.

Please get your facts together before posting … or folks on this blog will BBQ your assets!

This is a schemed way to squeeze money out of fans by UGA. Why cannot UGA receive money thru voluntary donation and give fans inexpensive tickets so that every fan has a chance?

That’s what Tech is doing anyway! Tech’s student body is a 3rd of UGA’s, while its voluntary donation (endowment) is twice as big as UGA’s. And Tech tickets is inexpensively available to all students.

Well, some UGA fans may get jumpy: more people want UGA tickets! Well, let me give you a solution: handle out tickets thru lottery: if you win the lottery, you get the right to buy the ticket $100 apiece.

I cannot believe UGA attracts so many fans while the fans are schemed. That’s just plain dumb to me.

UGA WILL SELL OUT OF SEASON TICKETS THIS YEAR AS ALWAYS.

This is about the fact that waiting list (hello!!!! folks that are WANTING to get tickets) is not as long as it was in a year that UGA was ranked #1 and a better home schedule. Everybody knew demand would be high that year and scalp prices up, so obviously if you could order 6 or 12, you did. I guarantee you the majority non-renewels (i’m surprised that arent that or more turned over every year) were just folks who just scalp the extras to pay for thier own not getting thier full qualified amount of tickets. I’m glad too. I know of way too many cases of folks whose families got grandfathered in and now they basically “sublet” the extra seats for profit.

I would also bet that with the increase in ease to score individual tickets on the internet, there will be a more and more folks opting not to renew some part of thier allotment and just buy the seat they actualy lose. But the seat will be sold all the same.

But yes, lets freak out because 2000 ticket went to new and different season ticket holders.

Southern California remains 31 games ahead of UGA Bulldogs in All-Time Football wins in 10th place.

Southern California back 36 years has not won the National Championship in Football, when UGA did in 1980 Consensus 30 years ago, making UGA better.

I’d also like to wish Christian LeMay Happy 18th Birthday in Athens today with his brothers for Football Camp. He remains the 1 recruit on Offense, none in this state last year 2010 or next year 2011, if indeed his commitment with all the outs, is a commitment to Mike Bobo by name.

Mike Bobo, the same coach responsible for recruiting Christian LeMay, Zach Mettenberger, and Montez Robinson to name the most recent 3 to run afoul of The University of Georgia itself.

Admissions Department is already weighing in on the matter, as they did for example Jamar Chaney and Michael Grant. Now, we have this hanging over our heads between now and this time next year – and, he yet another Top 10 at his Position Recruit that we can butt heads between the football staff and The University itself.

So, Happy Birthday Christian LeMay. Big 18 years old. You will fit right in here, son with all the other Mike Bobo recruited players.

Michael Grant.
Christian LeMay.

These 2 cases are both the same, reportedly.

I think we should ask Mr. LeMay to not show up today in Athens, or his brothers, until his mom and dad want to be truthful about this young lady on school grounds, all of which should be out by Monday. We went a month there without this kind of news since the last of 3 football players were kicked off team, 2 of them for incidents with young ladies, both Top 10 Players at their Positions.

As far as ticket prices, well that is directly related to the product on the field. Richt needs to get it turned around or it will continue. I know the economy is bad, but it is worse in Florida and the same over in Alabama. That’s just a convenient excuse from Evans.

The “donations” for ticket prices did not drop. For 97% of ticket orders the donation remains the same. For the 3% of folk trying to get into the rotation for the first time, the entry fee is just normal , not astonomical as it was 2 years ago.

And what a shock that the season after the NC Bama has high demand for tickets. WOW. What an amazing fact worthy of being pointed out. Is the initiation $10,000 for those new tickets.hmm??? I would bet you have NO idea what the system is to sell those new tickets. You just read something about new seat.

And whats with the spin about the % of ticket non-renawal. Yes 2 is twice 1. Whoppie.
Are you going to predict the demise of the Bama football program when a some fan don’t take the full allotment of multiple tickets one year, once those new seat settle down? 2000, geez. I’m pretty impressed that ONLY 2000 ticket didnt get renewed given the boring home schedule, stank economy, and clearly in transition with the team. Bama take the best season in a decade to sell 90+, UGA did it with the worse.

I like how Mr. Blind Homer really spanked me on that season ticket debate. “Kool-aid” and “UGA sucks”. Not so much Mr. Original Thoughts are you?

1- Recruiting rankings dropped to lowest in 5 years
2- Finished season unranked in national polls
3- Went 4-4 in SEC conference
4- Revenues are down
5- Required donations in sharp decline
6- Cancellations sharp rise

Something is wrong in Athens

We are, according to Chris Low this morning, the # 5 team in The SEC against Top 25 teams.

We are # 4 in The SEC against SEC teams over the last 4 years.

We are # 3 in our Division against SEC East teams over the last 4 years.

We are # 19 in the nation in won/loss over the last 4 years at 38-14.

We average # 52 in total offense the entire Coach Richt Era.

We average 21 fumbles a year over the last 4 years

We average 14 interceptions a year over the last 4 years

We average # 96 NCAA Rank in Most Penalties every year over the last 4 years.

We have had 39 Arrests / Suspensions over the period of since February 2007, a period of 3 years and 160 football players.

We have kicked 3 more players off the team in the time just since Spring Practice, and now on the heels of that, we have our # 1 Commitment Recruit, the # 2 QB in the nation, in public have at it with a gal in a classroom on the last day of school yesterday for the Principal to see first hand.

That would be a new world record for the most Obama voters gathered in one place at the same time. :-) :-) :-)

One out of every four players arrested. And yet Richt can’t get a handle on it.

That’s truly pathetic.

BuLLdawg,
I’m a Gator fan and I think you’re wrong. How can a RECRUIT that hasn’t even signed a letter of intent much less enrolled be a poor reflection on ANY university? Does that mean that every school he was/is being recruited by is bad? He may never make it to UGA. This has NOTHING to do with UGA. It may, if he makes it to Athens some day, but for now he is only a recruit. Period.

As for the rest of your points, I’ll leave the in-fighting up to you Dawg fans. Ya’ll certainly don’t want to hear my opinion on any of that! LOL

Typical of Georgia fans, I tell you you aren’t all that and you tell me I’m a Tech fan….NO. Back this up….what one game have you won since 1980 does the nation care about? See ya in the weedwacker Bowl! If you’re lucky enough for a vacation in Shreveport!

Stewart & Lake are on the right track. CMT needs to go now. He is not a capable coach. He is no judge of talent. He is no motivator. Hire a proven coach next time. I hope we don’t fool aound for a few more years with this coach. Release this man to go preach or whatever. I am tired of his lack of coaching.

If season ticket holders cancellations continue to rise at the alarming rates (up almost 300% from 2 years ago).

And if the required donation levels continue to lose an average of $4000+ per season, Richt will be gone soon.

You just can’t make the financials work when the program is in that kind of downward trend.

The tough part is sitting by and watching how schools like Alabama are adding thousands more seats, upgrading buildings, seeing revenues climb through the roof, while Georgia, keeps on sliding down.

Hard to watch your program die a slow death like this.

Evans doesn’t pony up on staff pay.

Richt lost Kirby Smart because he couldn’t pay him enough to keep him.

Pure folly.

Are you out of your mind saying that our top recruit being KICKED OUT 9 days after his celebrated statement and on the very day he is to show up on our campus with 2 brothers, is not a reflection on The University of Georgia.

I guess NEITHER were the other players, ever, then a reflection on The University of Georgia.

You guys have more EXCUSES than a pregnant Nun, DISNEYdawgs.com in here making up excuses like it does not matter.

Sure it matters.

Richt’s had the program in a freefall for years now. He has ONGOING problems with penalties, turnovers, arrests, declining defense, losing to Florida, etc. Just can’t fix ANY of the problems. What are the chances, in just one year, Richt fixes: penalties, turnovers, arrests, defense, and losing to Florida? I don’t see him fixing ANY, much less ALL 5 problems. think about it, if Richt COULD fix any of these, he already WOULD have fixed. Richt has taken the program as far as he can.

AJ Green has had 3 different QB’s in his 3 years at Georgia, first Stafford, then Cox, now a 3rd different QB in 3 years. How a coach can CONTINUE to make that same mistake, EVERY SEASON, is just unacceptable and shows a lack of looking ahead. AJ Green could have been awesome, but under 3 different QB’s, it will cost him a fortune in the NFL draft all the QB carousel at Georgia.

[...] Here’s an interesting article in the Columbia, S.C., newspaper, The State, on the decline in college football season-ticket sales around the South.  At Georgia, sales haven’t declined –- season tickets are once again sold out -– but the minimum contribution required to qualify to buy first-time season tickets has dropped dramatically.
