Vandy No. 1, UGA No. 2 in SEC football academics (Plus: APR for all UGA sports, all SEC football teams)

Georgia posted the second best score among SEC football teams in the Academic Progress Rate (APR) statistics released Wednesday by the NCAA.

UGA’s football team had an APR of 973 out of a possible 1,000, topped only by Vanderbilt’s 975 in the SEC. The national average for football teams was 944.

Georgia had the SEC’s highest scores in women’s basketball (1,000), men’s golf (1,000) and gymnastics (996). The baseball team posted Georgia’s lowest APR, 941.

The Bulldogs’ men’s basketball team recorded a score of 944, which ranked fifth among SEC teams. The national average for men’s basketball teams was 940.

All of Georgia’s 20 sports teams posted scores comfortably above the NCAA-mandated threshold of 925. Teams that post APR scores below 925 and have a player leave school ineligible can be assessed penalties, including loss of scholarships.

The APR is an NCAA-designed measure that assesses the eligibility, retention and graduation of athletes over a four-year period. The figures released Wednesday were based on the 2005-06 through 2008-09 academic years.

“We continue to perform well with our APR numbers, and that’s a testament to our student-athletes’ hard work as well as the efforts of everyone involved in supporting their academic endeavors,” Georgia athletics director Damon Evans said. “We are especially pleased with women’s basketball, gymnastics, and men’s golf ranking No. 1 among SEC schools. Additionally, football continues to perform at a high level, finishing just shy of the No. 1 spot in the conference. The improvement in scores from last year for 11 of our teams is also a great indicator for our programs moving forward.”

Not “peed off”, just amused. A lot of UGA fans (probably not alumni) scream to the other state school that their self proclaimed academic superiority doesn’t mean anything in regards to results on the football field. Now those same fans will state that their own football team’s academics are superior to the teams that produce better bottom line resutls than their own results?

Hello out there, can’t anyone figure it out? Why do you think UGA has so many “walk-ons”?

The walk-ons are screened to make sure they have the grades to pull all the illiterate morons’ grades up. These guys get uniforms and some practice time, and if UGA is ahead by thirty points with a minute to play, they might get to actually play for a couple of downs. Think “Rudy.”

UGA isn’t fooling anyone.

The only score that truly counts is the one belonging to Vandy. I bet their players are the only ones not taking “basketweaving” 101, 102, 103, and 104. Most of the “student athletes” on SEC football teams don’t have to meet the same standards of the general student at their respective schools…and they certainly receive more academic help than the average student…even for “basketweaving” classes. If Florida was #1 and Georgia was #10, it still would not matter or be much of difference…or signify anything major. And, it doesn’t surprise me that Vandy is #1….nor does it surprise me that they never compete for the SEC title for that very reason. But their athletes certainly compete in life….where education truly matters.

Reality Check, the requirements to get in may be similar, but the requirements to graduate aren’t. That’s why UGA’s scores are better than Tech’s. GT Alum,

“Tech folks” will quit talking about their academic superiority when they are dead. I am confident that nothing short of that will stop them. When its the only thing you’ve got you hang on tight.

I do think that “Tech folks” often ignore the fact that the football players do not by and large take the same or even similar courses as the engineers do. The vast majority are on a Management degree track. If there are football players that are successfully completing courses in engineering they deserve a lot of credit, but there aren’t that many of them. I would be shocked if the guys you hear about: Nesbitt, D. Thomas, Dwyer, Derrick Morgan (DE??), Morgan Burnett etc… are taking anything but Management degree classes.

Another thing that you have to consider is that different people find different things difficult. I for one would rather shoot myself then do calculus or geometry or chemistry. On the other hand I am sure that there are Tech students who would find taking poetry or some upper level history classes very difficult too. Its not necessarily true that Tech is objectively “harder” as much as many people don’t find what engineers do particularly interesting or appealling and would rather, you know, read and write, than master complex formulas. Somebody who can understand and explain Western Civilization by tracing the history from the Greeks to the American Revolution is not dumber than someone who performs well in math and science; its just a different sort of intelligence and both are needed in this society. In other words, the wise and thoughtful among us need soulless androids like yourselves to build nice buildings for us to work in. Thanks.

Vanderbilt has not updated their 2010 player bios, so I decided to compile a list of majors for the University of Florida, the 2nd ranked US News & World Report SEC school, and along with Vanderbilt, a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities.

Florida has bios listed for 39 upperclassmen lettermen. Here are the numbers by Major:

University of Florida – 2010

15 – Social and Behavioral Sciences
5 – Humanities and Letters
4 – Family, Youth and Community Services
3 – Sociology
3 – Political Science
2 – Anthropology

Sportsfan – most schools have those types of classes. Now if they are taking more than 2 or 3 of them thats obviously a problem. I had to take 3 recreational class at Georgia State for my basic core classes and I graduated in accounting which is a top 30 program in the country. I took archery and golf. Does that make my major or acedemic difficulty to easy for you? Of your 120 course credits or 150 which was for a five year degree in accounting you are probably going to have a few that a monkey could pass. Did you not go to college or are you to intellectual for people like me who took a few easy classes? I have two friends that just finished their PHD and a brother who graduated from law school that also took similar classes.

This shows that you have the dedication and resources to help your athletes perform well in the classroom. Note that Florida trails Georgia the same as your trail Vandy.

I still wonder, though, how much of this is due to the academic course load the athletes take. The AJC reported over a year ago that Georgia Tech’s football team had the highest SAT scores of any public university in the nation. Florida was near the bottom.

What often goes unnoticed is that UGA consistently ranks as one of Amerca’s great national universities. According to the most recent rankings of U.S. News and World Report, UGA is outranked by only Vandy and Florida among SEC schools. Universities like Tennessee, Alabama, Auburn, Arkansas, Ole Miss, LSU, Mississippi State, and Kentucky are a respectable distance behind. UGA’s Honors Program enrolls students who win Rhodes Scholarships, Fulbright Scholarships, etc. and HP student grades and entering test scores (SAT) are on par with (or exceed) those of students enrolled at Ivy League schools. To be fair, Georgia has another fine national university–Ga. Tech–and the entire state of Georgia should take justifiable pride in having TWO great academic institutions.

I researched the University of Georgia player bios as well. There are fewer players in the Upperclassmen Lettermen group than Florida. Several Florida lettermen had limited playing experience, while Georgia’s names would be familiar to most fans. It’s interesting that one major does not dominate among these majors.

Congratulations to Georgia’s athletic program making a concerted effort to be a top-notch SEC school both in classroom performance and in their respective sports. It demonstrates that the coaching staffs are making academics and athletics a collaborative priority and also demonstrates that we are recruiting and maintaining quality student-athletes. The naysayers either do not value academic performance or they do not value the development of well-rounded student-athletes. Their narrow-minded opinions and comments are not worthy of consideration among those of us who have attained degrees (3+ in my particular case) from a quality institution of higher learning such as UGA that also encourages quality in other areas of a student’s life, i.e. athletics, fine arts, etc.; as a longtime educator in this state as well as one who coached for 32 years, I appreciate the hard work of student athletes and coaches who make sure that academics and athletic priorities work cooperatively … not where one takes precedence over the other; kudos to UGA!

From the NY Times:

Filed at 7:06 p.m. ET

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska could be on its way to the Big Ten by Friday.

The university’s Board of Regents on Wednesday evening amended the agenda for its previously scheduled Friday meeting to include a briefing from chancellor Harvey Perlman and athletic director Tom Osborne on conference alignment. The regents could then vote to leave the Big 12.

Osborne said a decision has not been finalized, and he declined comment when asked whether the Big Ten had formally invited Nebraska to join the league.

The Cornhusker football team’s offensive coordinator, Shawn Watson, said Osborne hasn’t given the athletic department staff an indication which way Nebraska will go.

Watson said Osborne met with the staff last Friday to tell them about last week’s Big 12 meetings and to ”get a feel” for what the staff thinks about the Big 12 and Big Ten.

Since then, Watson said, Osborne hasn’t updated the staff on developments.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP’s earlier story is below.

These rankings don’t mean squat. They go up and down depending on which athletes are on campus at a given time. Five years from now with the exception to Vandy, the list will look different. I remember a few years ago a similar study had UGA almost dead last. The only rankings that should be considered are the US News World Report Rankings…which have in this order…Vandy, Florida, Georgia, Auburn, Alabama…rounding out the top 5 schools in the conference.

Vandy clearly is above UGA! They not only had a higher APR but their academics far exceed those of UGA! Most UGA players are Park & Rec. Mgt., Physical Educ. or business. All cream puff majors as far as academics are concerned. How many of the finals given at UGA are in the Harrick, Jr. model. But thanks for the laughs!

@blazerdawg,

I think you just proved why you are a UGA fan. You gave stats on the volume of books in the GT and UGA libraries as 1.9 and 3.5 million, respectively. Well, the 1.6 million difference is because the GT students checked those books out!!! Congrats to UGA for improving. But, please don’t even compare the degrees from the two schools.

@ Dorsey Hill,

You are right in the fact that a lot of athletes at GT don’t major in Engineering. But guess what, ALL ATHLETES at GT must take Calculus, not watered down College Algebra (which is, by the way Algebra 2 in high school). And the school is harder because of the way classes are taught, not because of the material.

How many points do you get for converting (making, so you will understand) a three (3, again so you will understand) points shot in basketball? Yeah, it sure is tough to be first when they are asking such in depth questions, you know ones that really need a thought analysis process. Everyone knows the only real education at UGA is the vet school which I have heard is outstanding. However, I would venture to say that not many, maybe any athletes are in such a program. But hey, way to go, pat yourself on the back for not being completely stupid in some courses that really are laughable if not an outright outrage that they would even have a college level.

The APR is an NCAA-designed measure that assesses the eligibility, retention and graduation of athletes over a four-year period. Teams that score below 925 on a 1,000-point scale can draw penalties, including loss of scholarships. The figures released Wednesday were based on the 2005-06 through 2008-09 academic years.

Georgia’s football program posted an APR of 973, second best to Vanderbilt’s 975 in the SEC. Tech had a football APR of 967, tying Boston College and Clemson for third best in the ACC behind Duke’s 983 and Miami’s 978.

The numbers were not as good in men’s basketball. Georgia’s APR of 944 ranked fifth among SEC teams, and Tech’s 908 ranked last in the ACC. Despite scoring below 925, Tech’s basketball program was not penalized because no player left school ineligible in 2008-09.

SO, UGA football has an APR of 973, TECH 967.

UGA BB 944, TECH 908. Hhhhmmmmmmm………..

Well, I guess we know why Reggie couldn’t count to 4.

Atlanta for life…FYI…I got an A in Calculus at UGA and subsequently a C in Algebra. The Algebra Teacher was an American Indian who made you memorize the population of the earth, the circumference of the eath and about 8 other random numbers to be used on tests. I didn’t think that was neccessary to prove my knowledge of Algebra but he did…thus my poor grade. See what happens when you take a course to raise your GPA? If the football players at UGA have this cat for Algebra, I promise it is (needlessly) harder than Calculus. Oh and I was admitted to Tech and CHOSE to go to Georgia. The football players at Tech are coddled just as much if not moreso than the players at UGA. In other words…you are not smarter than me and probably not smarter than anyone on the UGA football team. How is a Housing degree worse than an art history degree or a psychology degree or a history degree? None of these really lead to any type of professional income. There are far more “non-athletes” getting useless degrees from all these schools yet that doesn’t seem to matter.

And the greatest travesty? Any football player with a free-ride to Tech getting a Management degree (i.e. no 4 years of Calculus). How can you go to a substantial engineering school (for free) and not focus on an engineering major?

APR is a Scam

June 10th, 2010
9:28 am

Its laughable how many ignorant posters there are in this blog on this topic.

Theres not a poster on here that has any idea what the APR actually measures, and what it actually means.

The APR score is meaningless. Its just a falsely manufactured “compliance” scale that attempts to provide
PR cover for schools that are using educationally unqualified athletes.

Did the athlete go to class?
Is the athlete still in school?
Has the athlete passed basic English?
Blah, blah, blah.

Compare this useless APR score with the cold hard facts that over 70% of the current UGA football roster could only gain admission through the “Special Admissions” process at UGA that allows athletes who are only marginallly capable of ANY college work. Why do you think UGA created the “Housing” major has that over 40% of the current roster enrolled in it?

Seriously, if UGA is ranked 2nd behind on Vandy, then thats
all the proof anyone needs to know the APR is total freakin joke.

“Comparing the classes student athletes (football) are taking”

Beginning with that post yesterday, I have provided information on majors of football upperclassmen-lettermen. in comments on this blog.

I began with Florida, since Vanderbilt has not updated their web site for rising juniors. Florida and Vanderbilt are the top 2 schools academically in the SEC, according to the US News & World report annual evaluation.

With the appearance of comments that were criticizing the University of Georgia, I added the majors of 2010 football upperclassmen-lettermen.

With ensuing criticism of the majors of football players at Georgia Tech, I added majors of senior starters, and I noted that 4 rising junior starters were not included because the information had not been updated on true juniors’ majors.

If you want to criticize the content of the content of courses within those majors, the information is easily found on the respective schools’ web sites. If you want to just make invalid assumptions regarding the content, then don’t bother.

That was hilarious. It is funny that you would challenge me to education. I teach Calculus in the summer at GT and I would love for you to get any football player from ANY school to challenge me in any Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, or Engineering class. I am willing to put money on it and go from there. Actually, it should be between you and me. I bet there are some athletes that are darn smart, but you totally missed my point. For you to come on here and argue about Algebra, which is by far the easiest strand of mathematics there is, says a lot about your intelligence.

The thing about academic snobs is that they think that is all there is. It’s merely another characteristic that gives some individuals a natural advantage over others.

The same could be said for athletic gifts, charisma, abundant compassion, a natural strong work ethic, or having an appealing physical appearance.

Just because you are smarter than someone else does not mean that you are superior to them. Their natural gifts may provide them with more opportunities in life than your intelligence has provided you.

There are as many unremembered brilliant people in the graveyard as there are dumba$$es.

Make the most out of what you have been blessed with.

Student athlete=one big joke. What’s the point in bragging about your academics when you will do anything to get a skilled kid in school?

Tech should be proud of their 1,000 point scoring in douchebaggery, even if their academics failed like their football team, basketball team, and athletic department financials.

UGA’s academic sucess should not be a surprise to anyone, like when Gator Girl’s boyfriend had his crying game moment.

How are athletes leaving early to turn pro figured in? I would think a student in good standing who chose to leave due to the NFL, NBA or MLB draft would not be seen as a negative.

hahaha, Gator tramp…..looks as though someone has struck a nerve. I know you have to have a very simple and miserable life when all you have to to is read a UGA blog about how excellent the Dawgs are doing in the classroom. Please go and check out that ALL time record between us and see who owns whom. By the way, straighten up that cap, tidy your shirt and get back on those fries; you know the Varsity gets busy this time of day.

All very complicated. Too bad it’s not like the sports blogs. It takes about one day to figure out who is smart and who is not in here.

90% of uga football players couldn’t even get in Ga Tech, which is one of the top academic schools in the country. At UGa, they keep everyone eligible with “special classes.”

That’s correct. Jan Kemp exposed this sorry practice more than twenty years ago, and very little has changed at UGA.

The “special classes” are one of those dirty little secrets that UGA doesn’t talk about.

Hmmm… Why is that?

Hey bookworm just found out those books were on loan from GT. They were what to do in a drive by and how to survive a mugging.

I wonder how Joe Hamilton and all of his academically ineligible teammates would have affected GT’s APR score if it had been around back then. I would imagine GT would have scored lower than all of the football teams in the SEC.

So GT fans, you are telling me that Joe Hamilton and the rest of his posse is smarter than our football players. I doubt that.

I hate to let you in on a little secret GT fans, but your student athletes aren’t any smarter than UGA’s. Your campus is full of nerds (non student athletes) and dumb jocks (student athletes). It’s pretty obvious.

Gator “Gal” talking about trailers is hilarious.
It’s no secret (like the unwanted member that you keep taped and tucked in your jorts) that 1/2 of the mullet loving population of Florida lives in not just a trailer, but a a travel trailer (camper).
