The notebook: Poll puts Dogs No. 2 in East … SEC happy in ATL … Etc.
12:08 pm June 7, 2010, by Tim Tucker
Cleaning out the notebook after an interesting week at the SEC meetings:
- In the Birminghan News’ 64th annual Spring SEC Football Preview, Alabama and Florida again are picked to win their divisions, with Georgia predicted to finish second in the East. The News surveyed the SEC schools’ football information directors, asking them to predict the order of finish in their division (without including their own team). Florida and Alabama got the maximum available five first-place votes in the East and West, respectively. Georgia got the other first-place vote in the East (Florida’s), three second-place votes and one third-place. This is how the poll turned out:
West: 1. Alabama. 2 (tie). LSU and Arkansas. 4. Auburn. 5. Ole Miss. 6. Mississippi State.
East: 1. Florida. 2. Georgia. 3. South Carolina. 4. Tennessee. 5. Kentucky. 6. Vanderbilt.
Separately, the SEC football info directors were asked to rank the league’s teams without regard to division (and again without voting for your own team). Alabama got the maximum 11 first-place votes in this exercise, and three of the top four teams were from the West. This is how the overall poll turned out: 1. Alabama. 2. Florida. 3. LSU. 4. Arkansas. 5. Georgia. 6. Auburn. 7. South Carolina. 8 (tie). Tennessee and Ole Miss. 10. Mississippi State. 11. Kentucky. 12. Vanderbilt.
- While the Atlanta Falcons want a new open-air stadium, the SEC remains very happy with the Georgia Dome, where the league plays its football championship game each year. Asked if the SEC has any thoughts of having to move the game out of Atlanta given the uncertain future of the Dome, commissioner Mike Slive said: “Hypothetically there’s always a chance of something, but the game has been extraordinarily successful for us in Atlanta. At this point we have absolutely no intention of moving it out of Atlanta.”
- The SEC will decide late this year whether to keep its baseball tournament in Hoover, Ala., after 2011, the final year remaining on the current contract. The league also will consider pitches from Gwinnett County’s Coolray Field and Memphis’ AutoZone Park. But it sounds as if prying the event out of Hoover will be difficult. Slive noted that Hoover has become part of lexicon of SEC baseball. “The kids talk about . . . ‘we have to get to Hoover,’” Slive said. “In football, our [teams'] goal is to get to Atlanta. In some sports, [a particular postseason destination] becomes part of the fabric of the sport.”
- Georgia’s $17.4 million share of the SEC revenue pie represents about 20 percent of the UGA Athletic Association’s $84.75 million budget.
- Vince Dooley has said he won’t be in Sanford Stadium for the Georgia-Tennessee game on Oct. 9, opting instead to watch on television at home and privately root for his son Derek, the new Vols coach, who by the way agrees with his dad’s decision. “I think his point really is, it’s not about him and it’s not about me,” Derek Dooley said. “He doesn’t want it to become a spectacle. How many times have you had to look at the quarterback’s dad on TV before you go, ‘Please…’ You see it all the time. So every time I go out there and make a dumb call, it’d be, ‘Let’s see what Dad thinks.’ Great theater, you know.”
- Georgia associate athletics director Carla Williams was elected to the seven-person SEC Executive Committee for 2010-11.
- Former Georgia gymnastics star Courtney Kupets was nominated by the SEC for the 2010 NCAA Woman of the Year Award.

UGA will as usual be a huge disappointment this year. Second place would be seriously overreaching for a team plagued by penalties, the usual inexplicable breakdowns, and arrests of key players. I’ll put them in third place behind Florida and South Carolina. That’s at best – they could conceivably finish fourth, in which case it would be bye bye to Mark Richt.
My prediction:
Florida 38
Georgia. 13

With their schedule, yeah I could see it happening. They play by far the easiest schedule of any of the SEC teams this season. Although I still dont see Aaron Murray or the defense catching on fast enough for them to beat South Carolina or Arkansas.

We lost one on the o-line, a TE, QB and WR. That being said, most Gator fans think we will be more explosive on the offensive side than last year. Last year’s team was very predictable. More talent at the WR spot, proven o-line and RB’s with a pure passer should help to improve over last year. It’s called depth.

I will conceed the fact that UGA has quite a few questions to be answered in this up coming season. Most notably will be how the defense will play with the new scheme. Special teams play is another question mark. How will the offense do with an untested QB, and the play calling to go with that.
These questions are not any more numerous or complex than any of the other SEC teams have.
If the foolish mistakes are kept to a minimum (special teams, penalties int’s, lame play calling, etc.) the DAWGS will have an excellent chance of beating anyone, any where, at any time, this year.
These lame UGA haters on here will always predict the gloom and doom, for our team, no matter how good UGA will be. By Thanksgiving, we all will know who is right and who is delusional.
To proclaim UGA is a weak, demoralized team is absurd. Also proclaiming UGA will simply run the table is just as absurd. UGA should be and will be better than the last couple of years, but there is still some uncertainty to how much better remains to be seen. UGA will have to work for, and earn everything, and not take any team for granted.
This is the SEC. Where anyone can beat anybody. Nothing is a sure thing in this league. Now is the time to GATA.

UGA is Just Fine....
June 7th, 2010
2:56 pm
So let me get this straight UGA has WAY more questions than UF?:
UF- Starts a New QB with little exp. (mop up duty in blowouts against lesser opponents is just a hair better than practice exp.)
UGA- Starts a New QB
UF- Must replace several starters on Defense and one of the best DCs in the SEC over the last few years
UGA-Replaces a sub-par DC, but returns a ton of talent, and replaces a few seniors with better talent
UF- must replace on offense (in addition to Tebow)the #1 WR, #1 TE, #1 RB
UGA- Brings back entire starting offense-save the QB who can’t be worse than Joe “17 INTs” Cox.
UF-Has a new offensive scheme(not sure why this isn’t discussed more) Brantley is very talented, but they will not run the same offense they did with Tebow, so there has to be some learning curve for him and the rest of the O doesn’t there?)
UGA- New Defensive scheme.
X-Factors-
UF- Will B.James’ replacement on returns produce the field position advantage for the Gators that he did (another factor with the gators that is hugely overlooked)
UGA -Will the Dawgs fix the turnover margin and penalties?
So what other questions does UGA have going into the season, that makes them have WAY more questions to answer than UF?
The only difference I see is that UF is given more benefit of the doubt (rightfully so I might add)to successfully answer their questions than UGA, but let’s be real, as outlined above, they have just as many questions to answer.
note:If Spurrier can get Garcia’s head screwed on straight SC could sneak up on both the Dawgs and Gators this year.
Go Dawgs!

Gators have a very good starting O-line , but no experienced depth, no one really knows how Brantley will perform, we have wide receivers with a total of about 60 career catch’s, and we have a new d co- ordinator, and trying to replace 9 players off to the NFL, Lot of ?? that will hopefully have positive answers. UGA has questions, but they do have an very experienced and deep O-line, experienced play makers, and possibly the best two kickers in the nation. Will Grantham be the answer on defense?

All good points except you have to admit logically, you would think with the quality of recent recruiting classes UF’s replacements are probably better than UGA’s second team. Termigator- good points as well, however I’ve learned not to put too much stock into spring games as they are really just glorified scrimages.
Case in point- last year Joe Cox had a decent showing in the spring game and look how that worked out for us.
by the same token DJ Shockley had a horrible spring game and had many worried about the season and he ended up winning the SEC championship (may have been more had he not got injured in the Ark game the week before UF)
Just don’t put too much stock into what happens in spring, it rarely is an accurate determination of what happens in the fall.

How2fish,
UGA is a destination job but Bama isn’t. Good lord that is laughable and nothing short of downright delusional.
Bama can pay as much for a coach as any program, has a bigger stadium and superior facilities, and a vastly superior tradition and marquee name that Georgia doesn’t have.
Maybe you haven’t been paying attention but when the USC and ND jobs came open whose name was not in the mix??? Whose name was never even mentioned??? Its because Saban is not a candidate. If ND and USC, 2 of the biggest names in college football have no appeal for Saban then who would??? As for the pros Saban took a million dollar pay cut from one of the best jobs in the NFL to come back to the college game.
Sorry to disappoint you but he aint going anywhere. He reiterated that same point a mere 2 days ago and said yet again that he will retire from Alabama. End of story and the bottom line is that Saban will be at Bama a lot longer than Richt will be at Georgia. We all know Richt gets fired in 2 years.

When/if Meyer leaves Florida (don’t see it happening soon) then I would see them going after Mullen or the Utah coach first. Chris Petersen from Boise would probably get a hard look too. I would suspect that the next coach would come from that group. I think Meyer, however, goes at least 5 more years in Gainesville and then you know how that goes…5 becomes 10 etc. I think the fact that Foley was open to bend all the conventional rules and do everything to keep Meyer has given him “new life” and probably built in additional goodwill and loyalty by Meyer toward Foley and the Florida program.

One of the best things that could ever happen for the rest of the teams in the SEC would be to get the SEC office out of Birmingham. Anyone who thinks that alabama has not controlled things there since bryant returned has their head stuck in the sand. Time and time again things have gotten overlooked and misplaced. It would be like having the office in Gainesville or Knoxville or Athens. One way they won several of the sec championships was because bryant was allowed to play one more league game (usually vandy) than other teams. If you don’t believe it look it up.

You think that Saban would be interestedi in the Florida job if it came open when he already could have had the ND or the USC jobs if he wanted? Did you not notice that when those jobs came up Saban’s name was never mentioned on ESPN or any other media outlet? Man up and face it. He will be at Alabama another 8-10 years and then retire. Dave in Dothan,
Are you just stupid? You think Bama gets preferential treatment? Sure didn’t help when they got landed on probation. The SEC sure didn’t help bama the last 4 years by stacking the deck against Bama. Example-this year Bama has 6 straight sec opponents taking their bye week before playing Bama which gives the other team 2 weeks of rest and preparation. And you think the Bear racked up sec title after sec title cause Bear got to get an extra sec game every year, usually against vandy? What kind of a moron are you anyway? That’s one of the dumbest comments ever made on a blog anywhere.

Look at the rundown of the SEC teams, and you’ll see why, once again, the SEC is the toughest football conference in the nation. The powerhouse teams — Bama, Florida, LSU, Georgia, etc. — are all pretty much 10-win teams every year for the last decade. And the “also-rans” — teams like Auburn, Arkansas, South Carolina, etc. — are all pretty dangerous teams, consistently beat teams from other leagues, and have usually fared pretty well in bowl games.
I think Tennessee, Ole Miss and Kentucky will all steadily get better in the coming years… meaning the SEC will continue to be the benchmark of college football. That’s why it’s all the more satisfying when Georgia does win 10 games, reach the SEC title game, and/or make it to New Year’s and BCS bowls… it means they have accomplished something.
Winning a league like the Big East, ACC, Mountain West, WAC, etc…. well, that is like being valedictorian at summer school… nice accomplishment, but not nearly as meaningful as it could be.
Go Dawgs — good luck in 2010!

And by the way, I hope you all know WHY the Pac-10, Big-10, etc. are having these big delusions of money-grabbing and team-stealing… it’s because they are red-hot-FURIOUS that the SEC continues, year in and year out, to dominate NCAA football. Four national champs in four years, three different schools… yeah, the SEC is football king. Other leagues (and Notre Dame) can squawk all they want, but the SEC is the king of the castle, and everybody knows it. That’s why CBS pays a ransom to televise the games — because they draw numbers higher than Pavarotti’s blood pressure readings.
I don’t care if the Pac-10 goes to 30 teams, it won’t have the clout, power, or CHAMPIONSHIP ABILITY of the SEC… and while Dawgs, Gators, Vols, Tigers, Razorbacks, Wildcats, etc. may all scratch and claw and fight all year long, we are all united on one thing… THE SEC RULES!
