The notebook: Poll puts Dogs No. 2 in East … SEC happy in ATL … Etc.
12:08 pm June 7, 2010, by Tim Tucker
Cleaning out the notebook after an interesting week at the SEC meetings:
- In the Birminghan News’ 64th annual Spring SEC Football Preview, Alabama and Florida again are picked to win their divisions, with Georgia predicted to finish second in the East. The News surveyed the SEC schools’ football information directors, asking them to predict the order of finish in their division (without including their own team). Florida and Alabama got the maximum available five first-place votes in the East and West, respectively. Georgia got the other first-place vote in the East (Florida’s), three second-place votes and one third-place. This is how the poll turned out:
West: 1. Alabama. 2 (tie). LSU and Arkansas. 4. Auburn. 5. Ole Miss. 6. Mississippi State.
East: 1. Florida. 2. Georgia. 3. South Carolina. 4. Tennessee. 5. Kentucky. 6. Vanderbilt.
Separately, the SEC football info directors were asked to rank the league’s teams without regard to division (and again without voting for your own team). Alabama got the maximum 11 first-place votes in this exercise, and three of the top four teams were from the West. This is how the overall poll turned out: 1. Alabama. 2. Florida. 3. LSU. 4. Arkansas. 5. Georgia. 6. Auburn. 7. South Carolina. 8 (tie). Tennessee and Ole Miss. 10. Mississippi State. 11. Kentucky. 12. Vanderbilt.
- While the Atlanta Falcons want a new open-air stadium, the SEC remains very happy with the Georgia Dome, where the league plays its football championship game each year. Asked if the SEC has any thoughts of having to move the game out of Atlanta given the uncertain future of the Dome, commissioner Mike Slive said: “Hypothetically there’s always a chance of something, but the game has been extraordinarily successful for us in Atlanta. At this point we have absolutely no intention of moving it out of Atlanta.”
- The SEC will decide late this year whether to keep its baseball tournament in Hoover, Ala., after 2011, the final year remaining on the current contract. The league also will consider pitches from Gwinnett County’s Coolray Field and Memphis’ AutoZone Park. But it sounds as if prying the event out of Hoover will be difficult. Slive noted that Hoover has become part of lexicon of SEC baseball. “The kids talk about . . . ‘we have to get to Hoover,’” Slive said. “In football, our [teams'] goal is to get to Atlanta. In some sports, [a particular postseason destination] becomes part of the fabric of the sport.”
- Georgia’s $17.4 million share of the SEC revenue pie represents about 20 percent of the UGA Athletic Association’s $84.75 million budget.
- Vince Dooley has said he won’t be in Sanford Stadium for the Georgia-Tennessee game on Oct. 9, opting instead to watch on television at home and privately root for his son Derek, the new Vols coach, who by the way agrees with his dad’s decision. “I think his point really is, it’s not about him and it’s not about me,” Derek Dooley said. “He doesn’t want it to become a spectacle. How many times have you had to look at the quarterback’s dad on TV before you go, ‘Please…’ You see it all the time. So every time I go out there and make a dumb call, it’d be, ‘Let’s see what Dad thinks.’ Great theater, you know.”
- Georgia associate athletics director Carla Williams was elected to the seven-person SEC Executive Committee for 2010-11.
- Former Georgia gymnastics star Courtney Kupets was nominated by the SEC for the 2010 NCAA Woman of the Year Award.

Vince should go to the game, unless he’s gonna hoot & holler. In that case, he SHOULD stay home and privately root for Derek.

Spokesman – Have you seen who they have comeing back? Or more importantly who they don’t? They lost their ENTIRE OL, two best RB’s and QB. On D, they lost their top 3 guys along with others. If they win 5 games I’ll be impressed.

For Richt’s and Bobo’s long term tenure prospects at UGA, the “Birmingham News” better be right. Richt won’t have to worry this year, but Bobo better be working up a sweat because Willie ain’t around any more and guess whose aXX is on the block. This season is going to be interesting.

It’s Florida’s to lose…….They are the shining stars of the Media and until we change that, it won’t change. We just stumbled and fumbled through 2 very non Georgia or Richt type years. By that I mean, before the last two years, I felt a Richt team could take the field and beat anybody. Georgia will have to earn that rep back ” on the field”.

Guys, I’m not saying that UGA won’t be improved. I also think #2 in the East is where they should be picked at this point. But to act like UF has tons of questions but UGA doesn’t is foolish. In my opinion, UGA has more questions to answer. UF has just come off back to back 13-1 seasons. Yes they have questions, but not nearly as many.
Just one man’s opinion.

New QB and Big D under Grantham…( less late hit penalties ), have to be better than last year.. Oline & 2 great running backs.. will rush past SC. & Ark. .in close games, then a balanced passing attack with AJ., Durham and the big TE’s.. could beat Florida & Auburn in close games .. it will be exciting !!! I root for Ga. Tech too… but they need to get started recruiting ????

2nd in the East for UGA seems about right. I’d place them as 4th overall in the SEC though. I think that ARK is going to be the 2010 version of Ole Miss in 2009 – lots of pre-season and early season hype but middle of the pack performance by the time it is all over with.

We lost one on the o-line, a TE, QB and WR. That being said, most Gator fans think we will be more explosive on the offensive side than last year. Last year’s team was very predictable. More talent at the WR spot, proven o-line and RB’s with a pure passer should help to improve over last year. It’s called depth.

One, two – Exactly. A slew of guys and your “leader” Similar sceanrio on D. There’s no question but that there’s talent backing those guys up but you’ve no real clue who they’ll turn out nor who the leaders will be. Not to mention that you have a new DC also. I’d also point out that you’ve no clue how Myer will call a more conventional O.
As mentioned, many more changes to deal with.

UGA will finish second in the SEC East, but that’s primarily a function of how weak the division is. UGA will win 8 or 9 and may be a bowl game but I doubt the season will rank as special among the faithful.

Van gorder didn’t lose to the gators in 2002 or 2003. his defense did the job.
BVG only gave up 30 points once in his four years in Athens and that was in 2003 SECCG vs eventual national champion LSU

I will conceed the fact that UGA has quite a few questions to be answered in this up coming season. Most notably will be how the defense will play with the new scheme. Special teams play is another question mark. How will the offense do with an untested QB, and the play calling to go with that.
These questions are not any more numerous or complex than any of the other SEC teams have.
If the foolish mistakes are kept to a minimum (special teams, penalties int’s, lame play calling, etc.) the DAWGS will have an excellent chance of beating anyone, any where, at any time, this year.
These lame UGA haters on here will always predict the gloom and doom, for our team, no matter how good UGA will be. By Thanksgiving, we all will know who is right and who is delusional.
To proclaim UGA is a weak, demoralized team is absurd. Also proclaiming UGA will simply run the table is just as absurd. UGA should be and will be better than the last couple of years, but there is still some uncertainty to how much better remains to be seen. UGA will have to work for, and earn everything, and not take any team for granted.
This is the SEC. Where anyone can beat anybody. Nothing is a sure thing in this league. Now is the time to GATA.
