Check out the 40-yard dash times, bench press reps, etc., of UGA football players

Georgia today released the results of its spring testing of the football team in the broad jump, vertical jump, 40-yard dash, 225-pound bench press reps and “NFL Shuttle” — five traditional measures of agility, speed and strength.  (Descriptions of each test are at the end of this post.)

The team was broken down into three groups for testing: skill (WR, DB, TB); big skill (FB, QB, TE, LB, specialists); and linemen (OL, DL). All players were tested in all events unless an injury or illness precluded their participation.

Here, according to UGA, are the top-10 individual performances in each test for each group:

Event Descriptions from UGA:

Broad Jump: A test of explosive power. From a standing position, the player will jump horizontally as far as possible. Each player gets three attempts, with their best distance recorded.

Vertical Jump: A test of explosive power. From a standing position, the player will jump vertically as high as possible. Each player gets three attempts, with their best jump recorded.

40-yard dash: A measure of linear speed. The players will sprint 40 yards as fast as they can. They are timed from their initial movement through the finish line. Each player is timed by four different coaches. Each player gets two attempts, with their best time recorded.

225-pound rep test: A measure of upper body strength. Each player will bench press 225 lbs. as many times as possible without stopping. They must lock out their arms on each rep, and bouncing the bar off of their chest will cause that rep not to count. Each player gets one attempt at this event and their reps are recorded.

NFL Shuttle: A measure of agility and quickness. The player stands in the middle of a 10-yard space. He will sprint to his right 5 yards, touch the line with his hand and sprint back across his starting position for 10 yards, touch the line with his hand and then sprint back 5 yards through the starting position. This is a 20-yard shuttle. Each player gets three attempts, with their best time recorded.

Everyone knows that these 40 times are at least 0.15 if not 0.20 off. Every hand-timed college time by every school suffers from that same problem. It’s nothing new, and it’s nothing surprising. They are perfectly useful for comparisons within the team, but everyone knows Georgia does not have three people on the roster nearly as fast as Chris Johnson.

So, now that that’s been explained, I officially absolve all subsequent posters from having to point this problem out.

Carry on.

Get over 40 times. The total athlete is measured in the context of all of these events, and particular positions can be measured by a specific event. Justin Houston is an NFL linebacker and NFL linebackers shuttle in a 20 yard space, not a 40 yard sprint. That’s the drill to focus on. For breakaway speed (RB’s, WR’s), 40 is a bigger deal. For DB’s, look at explosive jumping ability and agility (shuttle. Brandon Boykin – nuclear calves to jump that high and far. Everyone’s knocking Cornelius’ 40 time, who cares if it’s off..look at his broad and high jumps and his 26 bench presses. There’s no home town discount on those numbers…and there’s no debating – the kid’s a freak! Excited to see to what extent it translates to the field (as an LB, his NFL shuttle is noticeably absent).

Even if C Washingtons time was off by a tenth of a second that would still put him under a 4.4 time. And he’s a linebacker…..holy smokes!!! These numbers are incredible. Now we just need to maximize the output on the field. It’s coming Dawg fans

You need football players with football speed. The 40 yard dash does not accruately measure a person speed on the field of play. A player needs have quickness to beat the opposing players to the point of attack.

Joe, the dominance FL has had over UGA will end this year. UGA will win the next three games in the series. That’s the bottom line because Stone Cold Russ says so!!!

I’m a huge UGA fan but I don’t believe these 40 times were calculated right. The NFL combine doesn’t have that many fast times for the best players in all of college football. Three sub 4.3 times, 10 sub 4.4 times, and two guys ran 4.4 flats. I’m sorry but this is just plain bogus. No way one college team has that kind of speed. Now I don’t think the coaches altered times intentionally but some of these guys must have been getting a jump on the timer. And C Washington with a 4.29? Cmon no way that guy can run that fast. I’m a DAWG all the way but this is BS.

You can basically throw the 40 times out. Colleges are notorious for giving “fast” times to their players. Anyone who watched the NFL Combine knows that there is no chance that any college team in the country has 12 players who run a 4.40 or better. It’s just not possible.

WTF

Don’t get too excited about the next 3 or 4 years. Just look at the Georgia recruits
from last year compared to the Florida recruits.

Georgia’s top 2 ESPN 150 recruits were number # 28 and # 84. Now you have these two boys trying to play against the Gator recruits. The 2010 class for Florida had the following ratings: #1, #3, #9, #10, #25, #28, #34, #35, #37, #41, #50, #79, and #81.

Now if you think your two can play Florida’s 13, then I want some of what you are smoking. Yes, yes I know Florida lost 9 players to the NFL, but they will plug in players
from previous classes that would have started at most SEC schools including UGA.

So the best you can hope for is to become more completive and stop the 40 plus blowouts. It will be some time before the Gators forget about the 2007 crap Richt pulled, so just be happy to keep it close.

I’m not trying to discredit these times but we always hear from college and high school teams about the these guys that run really fast 40 times. However, if you watch the NFL combine which I do religously the number of guys running sub 4.5 times dramatically goes down compared to what you hear about in college and high school. Which can lead me only to believe either the schools exhaggerate slighly or that a fast 40 time doesn’t always mean NFL talent. I’d guess there is some inflation of numbers at the schools.

Fans are barking in the summer excited for the season!

It’s kind of sad to see all the Dawg fans getting so excited this year (just like the year before, the year before that, etc.). How long is it going to take for UGA fans to realize that UGA is simply no longer relevant in the SEC? In the national picture, UGA isn’t even a blip on the radar, and hasn’t been since the preseason #1 ranking two years ago.

Sit back and be grateful for the seven or eight wins you’ll get every year. Coaching genius Mark Richt may take you to 10-2 or even 11-1 occasionally, but Florida will still win the SEC, meaning no BCS bowls and no top 15 final ranking. Most years, UGA will be very lucky to finish in the top 25, and only after a big bowl win over a nobody opponent.

It’s a different world now, and Dawg fans, like FSU and Ole Miss fans, need to adjust their expectations downward to reflect reality.

Unfortunately nothing is going to change until UGA changes its mediocre coaching. That’s where the difference is, and that’s why everyone outside Bulldog Nation just laughs at Dawg fans getting so excited year after year about what a great recruiting class UGA gets. It doesn’t matter how many blue chip high school plays go to UGA, they simply don’t get the coaching they would get at Florida or Alabama, to name two schools whose programs are far ahead of UGA. And that’s not going to change as long as Mark Richt is in Athens.

Get your heads out of the sand and face reality. And mediocrity and irrelevance.

There’s a disconnect here, and it has to involve coaching. I don’t understand why Richt does not think he’s in the hotseat when he can’t beat Florida and his team loses games they shouldn’t, like the Tennessee and Kentucky fiascoes last year.

Where are all the reps for the Offensive Linemen, now that they are supposed to be able to finally block for the running the football this season in a big game against an opponent who has a run defense ?

Where are all the reps for the Offensive Linemen, now that they are supposed to be able to finally block for the pass so well that a short quarterback can not have his passes blocked at the line on 3rd down conversions ?

How is Caleb King proving anything here with just 15 reps for a 22-year old man recruited in this state as the # 1 Player Overall in the state of Georgia 2007 ?

2007, 2008, 2009, and now here is the 2010 season. 4 years in our weight program with the facilities provided for him to get strong, and he has 15 reps of 225 lbs, and has not turned in 1 good game against any quality run defense, ever.

You can see right here, with Caleb King your Starting Running Back the last 5 consecutive ball games, including the devastating loss to Kentucky at home why we can not run the football in the big games since we recruited this Caleb King, who by the way told Ken Malcome that to him, Caleb King, running the football here at UGA is no fun and nothing but a terrible grind.

Dogging it.

That is what Caleb King has done here in our weight room, on the field during the games, in practice, and in his attitude for 4 solid years.

Oh, excuse me. I am supposed to be Positive.

I look for great improvement from Caleb King since his coaching staff on Offense and in Strength and Conditioning obviously has done such a tremendous job for 4 years in a row now with our Starting Tailback at The University of Ground Attack.

No sense getting on his butt to step up and get the damn job done, not with a Freshman QB who is supposed to throw another 14 interceptions for us this season, and fumble the football 21 times again this year, just as we have done both for 4 years in a row and counting now. This year will be 5 years in a row.

Read a guy said I could not post on his blog that he would remove it. Yeah, keep it nothing but DISNEYdawgs.com. And, tell me Caleb King is going to be great this season running the football to take the pressure off Aaron Murray, who he said would throw 12 interceptions (no mention of fumbles under center or on exchange from under center) and he says that UGA will go 10-3 ain’t that great and positive he said today on his blog. He predicts losses to South Carolina in Game 2, Auburn and of course Florida. He surmises that that is Positive and a Great Year for UGA with 15 seniors now on Scholarship on the roster for this season and 4 more Juniors we lose after this season.

Ken Malcome, what did you think when Caleb King said that you ?

Anyone notice that David Hale doesn’t even know how to spell Ken Malcome ?

Puts 2 L in his last name.

Caleb King, why not just move on, if you don’t want to work.

15 reps for a 22-year old man recruited here as the # 1 Football Player in the entire State of Georgia. 4 years of Strength and Conditioning, and not only the entire OL looks pitiful at their reps of 225 lbs. but Caleb King, I call you out sir for 15. Caleb Dogging it King while you are coddled as the Best Football Player in the Entire State of Georgia.

Jeff Owens could bench press a house, and he went in the 6th or 7th round? Brandon Spikes ran a 5.0 40( which is SLOW for a linebacker) yet gets drafted in the 2nd round by the Patriots. The difference? Brandon, despite his physical limitations, is a smart football player who is in position to make plays because he does the work in the film room. He’s a football player, not an athlete masquerading as a football. Speed is a great commodity to have but if it is out of position, it’s worthless. To give an NFL example: Ted Bruschi was a football player with some athletic ability that was able to play within any scheme because he’s a smart player. DeAngelo Hall is a great athlete with killer speed, but he’s too lazy to put in the work to learn a defensive scheme. Therefore he gets beat by lesser talented guys because his tries to rely too much on his instincts instead of perfecting his fundamentals.

Agree that these 40 times must be off by at leas .10 to .15. The one thing I am happy to see is that there were 5 players as fast or faster than B. Smith. We all know that he is lightning fast with pads on and on the field (if he can just be taught to hold the football properly), so if there are 5 other guys on the team that are as fast or faster, I like the sound of that.

I was surprised that T. Strickland wasn’t among the leaders of the 225 bench press. Maybe he is more “max bench press strong” than he is endurance of reps strong if you know what I mean. I thought he was the strongest offensive lineman on the the team.

Florida beat by Georgia.

Florida, who was in the Softball College World Series Final Game last year, beat by Georgia 3-2 tonight.

The Georgia Bulldogs also beat the other team in the College World Series Final Game last year with 2-time College Player of the Year

Danielle Lawrie for last year’s Softball College World Series National Champions Washington Huskies had some very unkind words afterwards, last night.

“When you’re facing a good offensive team and they’re getting breaks like that constantly, it can be hard on you,” Lawrie said. “I think a lot of stuff fell for them today.”

Georgia beat Lawrie last year in the Softball College World Series too, 9-8.

Georgia is in the loser’s bracket after losing to the vols 7-5 in a hard fought game where we gave up a Grand Slam.

But, on this night, we kept our hopes alive by Beating Florida.

We have a great hitting team, and although we are in the loser’s bracket with 1 loss our elimination 50-12 Georgia eliminates hapless hitting Florida 49-10.

The last 5 Florida hitters all struck out against UGA pitcher Erin Arevalo to snuff out a Florida rally and secure a 3-2 win for Georgia on Saturday night at the Women’s College World Series.

Georgia Bulldogs Softball College World Series continues today at 1 p.m. against UCLA on Channel 846 ESPN (That’s channel 46 for you RED DOG 77.)

3 of the 8-team Softball College World Series are SEC teams. Florida is the 1st ousted. (Seems Georgia does a better job of ousting Florida than AltamahaDawg does of me.)

If needed, there are 2 more games today at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. also both on Channel 847 ESPN2, except for RED DOG 77, who will find it on Channel 47, since he cannot afford HDTV, even yet.

If UGA can beat UCLA at 1 p.m, we get to play them again at 7 p.m. today.

Florida was the 4 seed in the Softball CWS. UCLA is the 5 seed.

6-seed UGA would be the highest seed should we knock out UCLA at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Caleb King has taken some knocks for his bench reps so here is a little background for ya’ll. King broke his leg in his senior season so he couldn’t do any lower body work. King concentrated on upper body work and reported to UGA at 215 lbs. The extra weight cost King some quickness so he had to drop 10 lbs in his freshman year. King is comfortable in the 205 to 210 range so don’t look for him to bulk up by doing much on the bench. Remember, King runs with the ball, he doesn’t push the blocking sled around at practice.

BuLLdawg, please tell us about the young Lady Dawg with the lowest batting average. Just look it up, write a full page about in including her game by game performance, question her commitment and character, and then pretend it’s the same as expressing some thoughtful opinion.

Then you can BOO her the entire game today.

I still say we have the toughest schedule in Div I NCAA football. Just look at it. The teams we play are loaded with talent. Vandy, KY, Miss St., Idaho whomever, Louisiana whomever, Arkansaw, Tennessee. My guess is that these teams above are ranked between 100 and 1000 on SOS. LMFAO! I still say we win it all and if we don’t, it’s because we are rebuilding. Something we take great pride in every year at UGAG. Maybe, we can beat UF before 2020, just maybe………………LOL!

JerkitManClassOf84, It must take an enormous amount of energy to maintain the continous level of delusional thought shown by you and your bizzy-buzzy kind. Does it come from being beaten down so badly for so long or have the chemistry majors been putting a little something extra in the Kook-Aid?

BTW, the number 2 WR in GA (Zachary Witchett) committed to UGA Friday. That gives us the top two WRs in the state in next years class. Dawg fans check out his highlights on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gP4VzMbCB_k This shows a man among boys.
He has speed and strength to carry would-be tacklers with him.

4th year here and he has not had 1 good game against any Opponent with any run defense.

None.

He DOES have to PUSH the sled to run the football against good run defenses.

And, so does the OFFENSIVE LINE.

Neither of which have.

If a rather small RB has to push defensive linemen out of his way he will not gain many yards. However, if he has good lateral quickness and can explode through a crack in the defense he can gain a lot of yards. With a HEALTHY offensive line both King and Ealey will do well. Also, look for Jackson and Thomas to contribute.

shane#1,

you are being logical in your thinking which is a mistake. BuLLdawg’s obsession with Caleb King defies logic. And math, since that RB has been on campus three years. I am guessing BuLLdawg doesn’t understand that one half plus one half equals ONE year and not TWO years. We can put fraction addition on the list of things he doesn’t understand.
Duh.

I have read that UGA is on an Up-Swing.

Then, I read the same people saying that we will lose 3 more SEC games this up-coming season. Your expectations are too low.

Is it unrealistic to want to be better than 10-3 after 10 years of recruiting, meaning that for the 1st 5 years we were good and that for the last 5 years, we haven’t even been to The SEC Championship Game ?

29-6 Florida vs SEC the last 4 years
23-11 Alabama vs SEC the last 4 years
21-12 LSU vs SEC the last 4 years
20-12 Georgia vs SEC the last 4 years

I would dearly love to hope that the program is on an up-swing.

Is it ?

The Stuff of Legend says 10-3 with loss to Auburn who hasn’t been all that great and probably won’t be all that great this season – not named in the Top 25 for this up-coming season, loss to Florida who is supposed to be offering everyone in The SEC East our best chances at beating them this season, and a loss to South Carolina who hasn’t been all that great and probably won’t be all that great this season – not named in the Top 25 for this up-coming season.

We have a soft easy schedule. We play 1 team ranked in the Top 25 all season. In the last 4 years in this division of this conference, we have beat 1 Top 25 Final AP Poll team, which was 2007 beating a 4-loss Florida. Of the 6 games these last 4 years in The SEC East who ended up ranked teams in the Top 25 Final AP Poll, we beat 1 a 4-loss team.

We have continued to have losses to teams who are not that great. Teams who do not end up at the end of the season ranked teams, but they beat us. This number now stands at 8 such losses in the first 9 years of this program.

We struggled in recruiting in this state on offense 2010.

Every single article you read, says that Coach Richt feels that his offensive coaching staff has issues and needs help / replacing.

Everywhere you turn, there is discussion of just how this program is not on an up-turn, and the Coach on the hot seat. I wish he was not. I like Coach Richt as our Football Head Coach. He is stubborn, however, and does have significant issues in discipline, graduation rates, and his coaching staff had to replaced – all except for the Offense, who many believe was what needed to be replaced most after Willie Martinez.

We have this season 11 returning starters on offense, the 2 best kickers in America returning on any team in the nation, and a defense which obviously is high on talent and with a top coaching staff. We have an easy schedule, however, and according to The Stuff of Legend we are going to go 10-3 which means with 3 SEC losses, no SEC Championship Game appearance for the 5th year in a row this up-coming season.

After this season, we lose 15 seniors and there are those who say as many as 6 juniors who are NFL draft eligible, might also leave. These are all the starters across the board on the entire football team are maybe gone at the end of this season. How good are we going to be in 2011 without 20 of the starting players ?

Are these unrealistic expectations for The Georgia Bulldogs’ Football Program that we could have spent the same monies on an Offensive Coaching Staff as we just did on the Defensive and Special Teams’ Coaching Staffs ?

Is it unrealistic to hope that with 11 returning players on Offense this season, that we should do far better than 3 more SEC losses in 2010 with this soft schedule of 1 ranked team on the entire schedule, and they – Florida – offer the rest of this division of this conference all of our best hopes to beat them finally.

I think with all due respect that you are being unrealistic to state in public that we are on an up-swing. We certainly have not been the last 4 years in The SEC – can’t we hope to be better than 4th in our own conference ? Against SEC East opponents, we are 3rd worst in our own division of our own conference over the last years.

19-1 vs SEC East Opponents last 4 years Florida
14-6 vs SEC East Opponents last 4 years Tennessee
10-1- vs SEC East Opponents last 4 years Georgia

We certainly at 10-3 are not improving upon that this season, either. And, after this season, we lose nearly every starting football player on both sides of the football. How good are we going to be in 2011 without them ?

It is very easy to go look at the 15 seniors and everyone knows AJ Green is gone after this season, Houston is gone, Boykin is clearly gone, Jones is looking good for a high draft pick at this time, with a good season this year, there might be more Juniors looking at where they might be in the NFL Draft Picks.

We gut the team after this year and we are supposed to consider this another rebuilding year ?

We were 9-5 last year. I thought that was our rebuilding year ? How many rebuilding years do we need 3 ? We are supposed to think 3 more SEC losses this year is just fine ? When do we address the Offensive Coaching Staff, if not after the last 4 years in a row of 21 fumbles a year, 4 years in a row of # 96 in Penalties, poor Strength and Conditioning Numbers for the Offensive Players, and 4 years in a row 14 interceptions a year.

After we do that again this 2010 season ?

After we graduate them all after 2010 and with the similar numbers WE obviously will put up in 2011 losing all the starters we have returning this 2010 season ?

Up-swing ? What up-swing ?

FYI for everyone… Boykin did not participate in the 40 yard dash or the bench press… they also have his and Brandon Smith’s NFL Shuttle backwards… Boykin actually ran a 3.8 and Smith ran a 3.9. Boykin is the best athlete on the team hands down… I dare someone to challenge me on this.

To everyone saying that those 40 times are not possible, you are either getting stop watch timed runs and digital timed runs confused or you have never ran a 40 yard dash. Those are all perfectly reasonable 40 yard dash times timed with a stop watch. Now if these were timed digitally then I would also be calling bs. If you never played football or ran the 40 yard dash then you shouldn’t be commenting anyway.
On another note Cornelius Washington is a beast.
And on a final note, I would like to point out that Aaron Murray had pretty much the same 40 yard dash and shuttle time as Logan Gray. Yet Gray is such a superior athlete. Give me a break.

Are these 40 times a little misleading? Probably, so are the players weight and height measurements put out by the PR department. High schools do this also and I have never understood why. We can learn something from these stats however. Washington probably weighs closer to 250 than 260 and is a little slower than advertised, but he is big and he is faster than most UGA WRs, including Green. If an offense wants to roll their QB out to avoid Houston they are rolling him right at Washington. Vance Cuff may not be another Neon Dion, but he was faster on that day than Smith, and that’s pretty freakin’ fast! Smith, Boykin, and Cuff, some kind of speed at CB! Rambo and Williams ain’t exactly slow at safety either. UGA may have one of the fastest defenses in the SEC, especially on the edges. So it would seem an OC would try to attack the middle where UGA has three new starters. A lot is going to depend on those new linemen.
