Times, TV set for four Georgia football games (UPDATED)

DESTIN, Fla. – Georgia officials had hoped for fewer night football games this year, and they appear to be getting their wish.

Starting times were announced Thursday for four Georgia games, and none will be under the lights:

  • The Bulldogs’ first two SEC games, Sept. 11 at South Carolina and Sept. 18 vs. Arkansas in Athens, will start at noon and be nationally televised on ESPN or ESPN2.
  • The Oct. 2 game at Colorado will kick off at 4:30 p.m. ET (2:30 p.m. MT) and be shown on Fox Sports Net, including Atlanta-based Fox Sports South.
  • And the Oct. 30 game against Florida in Jacksonville will start at 3:30 p.m. on CBS.

Starting times for Georgia’s other eight games have not been set. Most won’t be determined until 12 days in advance, per the SEC’s television contracts.

Last season, six of Georgia’s 12 regular-season games were at night, including four of the six home games –- numbers that tilted a bit more heavily toward night than UGA prefers.

UGA President Michael Adams acknowledged at the SEC spring meetings here Thursday that Georgia’s preference is largely inconsequential because TV contracts give the networks power over game times. But he said “it looks like the luck of the draw” may create a day-night balance more to Georgia’s liking this year.

“The typical Georgia fan loves daytime, mid-afternoon football,” Adams said. “It allows a lot of people to get there and to get home. That’s a benefit. The coaches and players like the prime-time [night] exposure. So it’s like everything – there’s a tradeoff.”

The time hasn’t been set for the Bulldogs’ Sept. 4 opener against Louisiana-Lafayette in Athens.

Other early-season SEC television games announced Thursday:

Sept. 2: Southern Miss at South Carolina, ESPN, 7:30 p.m. ET

Sept. 4: Miami (Ohio) at Florida, ESPN, 12 noon ET; Kentucky at Louisville, ABC, 3:30 p.m. ET; LSU vs. N.C. in Atlanta, ABC, 8:00 p.m. ET

Sept. 9: Auburn at Miss. State, ESPN, 7:30 p.m. ET

Sept. 11: Penn State at Alabama, ESPN, 7:00 p.m. ET; Oregon at Tennessee, ESPN2, 7:00 p.m. ET; Ole Miss at Tulane, ESPN Classic or ESPN2, 9:00 p.m. ET

Reptillicide,
UF usually KEEPS a top 5 ranking. By the way, if they are so overrated, what does that say about your squad?

11 Dawg,
You are correct about the home games. That is why UF plays the “cupcakes” they do, so they do not have to make a road trip the next year. Millions of dollars of revenue are lost by not having that 7th home game. I don’t like it but I do undertsand it. Difference in philosophy between Foley and Evans.

Well at least we can take solace in the fact that our games are on ESPN and not Raycom or FSSO.

Night games would be nice. Just hope ESPN Gameplan carries all GA games as I live in the MST zone. It sure was nice to see all the UGA games last year via a combination of Gamepaln and the major networks. I hope Coach Richt takes advantage of the opening game to get both the starting QB and the backup some game experiance so three years from now we have another season to start with out an experianced QB. I also think this teams tallent spells wishbone formation with either Murray or Gray at QB. Then add the weapons of Green at wideout and Charles at tightend it would be Katie bar the door! Can’t wait for the season to start!!!

Sturdivant, Glenn, Burnette, Anderson, Davis = Nixon, Johnson, Pouncey, Hurt and Gilbert. We have the exact personnel if not better that Florida has yet we won’t play them. It’s insane up there but that’s Uga. Why in the world would that offensive tackle out of Moultrie go up there. He’ll just sit behind Kolton Houston for four years. Something’s wrong up there and it needs to be looked at.

It’s UGAy, so who cares what time the game is, or if they even play at all.

The AJC is an Atlanta newspaper. Why does it cover an abominable underachieving Athens team full of illiterate, felonious goons?

My prediction:

Florida 42
Georgia 17

Point spread at least 21 points. It won’t matter when or where the game is played!

Go to one of the many Georgia Tech noon games this year and you’ll see why. Nobody cares about Georgia Tech football. Not even their own fans.

I digress. A noon kickoff for our first SEC game on the road is a blessing if you ask me. It definitely takes the edge off the home crowd. I always think of when we smacked Auburn around at their place in 2006. We probably wouldn’t even have won that game if it were at night. I could really care less about “exposure” and tailgate time this year. I just want to win again.

The way the Dawgs played last year perhaps these start times are justified. That is, until the team plays better on the field then the better time slots will soon follow. I’ll watch the Dawgs at any time of the day or night. As far as the one poster mentioned that UGA has no fan base outside of Georgia, I beg to differ on that. Here in Orlando we have quite a gathering of alumni and Dawg fans that get together every Saturday when the Dawgs play. Jacksonville, Tampa, Melborne are a few other places with a signifcant number of Dawg fans as well. In a sea of orange and blue its nice to see islands of refuge decked in red and black. GO DAWGS….. It looks like the real SEC does not start until UF plays UT on CBS. Hey dawgs, just be happy to get beat by UF every year in Jax so you guys get to play in the 3:30 game. TV is driven by the number of eyeballs watching the game – lucky for the dawgs they don’t count teeth.

Don’t forget to wear your black jerseys for the big games. BWAHAHAHAHA

UGA athletic leadership has always been against night games. Reason being is the same rationale behind the UF/UGA game remaining in Jacksonville….to cater to the “old school” south Ga alums.

Dooley rarely scheduled night games at the behest of wealthy south Ga alums who wanted to be home into for church on Sunday mornings. Damon is simply following Dooley’s lead.

This mentality is the reasoning why the Florida game is in Jacksonville (at during the day).

It is basically a “home” game for the south Ga alums. And it is this alumni base and supporters who have traditionally controlled the purse strings with UGA athletics.

You have got to be kidding me. I don’t know anyone who likes baking in the 90 degree weather in a packed stadium. The atmosphere, and temperature, is so much better at night games. People who whine about the drive home should just get a hotel room. Thats what LSU, Florida, UT, and all other SEC fans do.

It is good to have the SC game at noon, it will still be loud, but it is better then throwing Murry out there in a night time game at SC. Cant wait 2c it, friend has season tickets for SC. 31- 17 or 31- 20 DAWGS.
