The UGA notebook: Vance Cuff’s 40 time is something to write home about (UPDATED)

Good morning from Destin, where SEC athletics directors and coaches begin four days of meetings today.  (I’ll be tweeting from the meetings, so please follow @ajcuga on Twitter for news, notes and anecdotes.) Before turning to the business of the SEC, let’s run through a few UGA items that have accumulated:

  • Georgia cornerback Vance Cuff tells his hometown newspaper, the Moultrie Observer, that he ran the 40-yard dash this spring in 4.24 seconds, the fastest ever recorded by a UGA football player. Now, granted, 40-yard dash times aren’t exactly the most reliable records in the world of sports. But a 4.24 clocking is definitely something to write home about. “It hasn’t soaked in yet,” Cuff told the Moultrie paper. Check out the story here. (UPDATE: Mark Richt confirmed today that Cuff did, indeed, run a 4.24. Richt said he saw it.)
  • Remember Bill Gullickson, the former major-league pitcher? Went 162-136 in 14 seasons with the Expos, Reds, Yankees, Astros and Tigers in the ’80s and early ’90s. His daughter is Chelsey Gullickson, the Georgia sophomore tennis player who won the NCAA singles championship Monday.

    Bradberry

    Bradberry

  • Rex Bradberry, who had worked with Georgia’s strength and conditioning program as an intern and a graduate assistant, is now a full-time staffer and will serve as the football team’s nutritionist -– a new position. Bradberry earned his Ph.D. in Kinesiology at UGA this spring, with research interests in injury prevention, nutrition and speed development. He is a former Georgia walk-on player under Jim Donnan.
  • Georgia’s softball team travels today to Oklahoma City, its second consecutive trip to the College World Series. The Bulldogs (48-11) open against defending national champion Washington (50-7) at 9:30 p.m. Thursday on ESPN2.

His 4.24 was probably more like 4.64. That is still faster than NO SHOW’s 4.78.

What I was trying to say was that once you hit 4.3, it doesn’t matter. You are fast, period.

Deoin Sanders could F-L-Y at 4.29 in the 40.

Quote: Vance Cuff’s 4.24 wasn’t clocked officially like Deion’s, but if it was even off by 1/2 a seond, that’s still Deoinesque speed.

And yes, Cuff’s skills are superb–he shut down AJ Green all Spring. End Quote

40 speed is very overrated IMHO. 1) how often does a guy run 40 yards in one burst? 2) I think vertical jump is a better sign of explosiveness. Most football moves are about that burst or explosiveness. 3) If the time is off by 1/2 sec, then he would be a very slow DB (that would be a 4.74 40===something you want your linemen running).

If he has those physical skills, then he is a huge disappointment. Of course many people can run a straight line fast, lift a lot of weight or jump high and not make a very good football player.

Why is it that Gator fans come onto an Atlanta recruiting blog? I’m glad to know Georgia is on your mind. I know Gainesville is a dump but seriously. BTW, by the looks of the times of these post some UF fans need to get a job. Stop living off the gov’t you bunch of democrats.

Strength and Conditioning, Nutrition? What a bunch of idiots! Start Sturdivant at Left tackle, Cordy Glenn At Left Guard, Chris Burnette at Center, Bean Anderson at Right Guard and Josh Davis at Right Tackle. What a group of morons for coaches. Sheesh. Just do what Florida does and you should be ok. LOOK: LT- Marcus Gilbert LG- Carl Johnson C-Mike Pouncey RG- Muarice Hurt (from Milledgeville) RT- Xavier Nixon. It’s so simple unless there’s another problem not related to football. And of course there is, it’s UGA isn’t it? That OT from Moultrie is crazy if he goes up there to play behind Kolton Houston. He needs to set up right next to Chance Warmack to continue our tradition of Georgia kids making up the left side of the Crimson Tide Offensive front. Thank you Coach Richt, Thank you coach Bobo, and most of all thank you UGA supporters for your years of prejudice. Roll Tide, Tide Roll!

Fla’s head football coach presents with Bi-Polar Disorder and doesn’t even want to work anymore. Talk about priorities. Win, or lose, our coach is grounded in faith and values. Your coach yells at his toothbrush in the morning…….

Did I just read a post by an Alabama fan talking about racism???? You tools need to learn how to stop throwing stuff on the field when you lose before casting stones… If you don’t remember in that little pea brain of yours, Sturdivant has been hurt the last 2 seasons dipsh!t.

PS- Your program is historically cloaked in scandel. The most corrupt program in the nation. You have no room to talk.

Hey Cuff’d and Stuff’d…..
Yes, there are some pretty dumb comments on this blog. But how can you talk about the UGA fan’s IQ without mentioning the “brilliant” GT students who nearly blew themselves up doing a “high school chemistry experiment”. Wow, now that is impressive!

wiredawg, at least its students blowing themselves up at GT and not professors shooting each other or themselves.. Now back to the article about the world’s fastest man, Vance Cuff. Vance who? And how was this mythical 40 timed? Don’t think anybody has mentioned that.. Reminds me of some of those 40 times you heard about in high school- “yeah, I ran a 4.2 the other day. My dad timed me..”

Most delusional fanbase ever. And its not just GT fans that realize that..

Cuff’d and Stuff’ed, you’re right. At GT most of them get mugged on the way to class or dorms. But at least they have that beautiful campus going for them! Haha.
On Vance Cuff…obviously he was hand timed, just like all the other college players’ times you hear about. When these guys get to the combine, their times go up because it is done electronically and is very presise. But use your head, you have to have something to compare the other timed results with. All anyone is saying is that he is the fastest ever hand timed at UGA, and he has showed a lot of improvement this spring. What is your issue here, other than football program envy? And don’t talk about delusional fans, when the GT nerd fan base hyperventilate for a year like they won the national championship just because they beat UGA once every 8 to 10 years…wow, very sad.

At UGA students get mugged by players on their way to campus. At GT we are excited because we have the best coach in the state who actually has a pair. And at least we don’t talk about how good we’re going to be every preseason. We leave that to the UGA fanbase. Its not just Tech fans laughing at your lofty expectations every year, either, its pretty much every other fanbase in the southeast.

By the way, Paul Johnson is 1-1 against your Dawgs. Hope springs eternal for us GT fans. I’ve got amnesia when it comes to the Gailey years..

At UGA we are so used to 10+ win seasons, we expect it. Anything less is unacceptable. Hence, the lofty expectations. At GT you nerds keep hoping and praying that one day, in your life time, there might be back-to-back 8+ win seasons; but no matter what the record, a win over UGA makes the season successful and you buy the team rings to commemorate it. You techies have amnesia when it comes to a lot of things. That’s the only way you could continue to be GT fans.
And by the way, we only buy rings for championships. Watch and learn.

you’re right tech nerd, you guys never have expectations so when uga expects a bcs bowl game you just can’t understand it…and the rings were the biggest joke ever, you win 1 game after losing 7 straight? (i lost count) so you call jostens to have some crappy rings made, haha….
