The UGA notebook: Vance Cuff’s 40 time is something to write home about (UPDATED)
9:28 am June 1, 2010, by Tim Tucker
Good morning from Destin, where SEC athletics directors and coaches begin four days of meetings today. (I’ll be tweeting from the meetings, so please follow @ajcuga on Twitter for news, notes and anecdotes.) Before turning to the business of the SEC, let’s run through a few UGA items that have accumulated:
- Georgia cornerback Vance Cuff tells his hometown newspaper, the Moultrie Observer, that he ran the 40-yard dash this spring in 4.24 seconds, the fastest ever recorded by a UGA football player. Now, granted, 40-yard dash times aren’t exactly the most reliable records in the world of sports. But a 4.24 clocking is definitely something to write home about. “It hasn’t soaked in yet,” Cuff told the Moultrie paper. Check out the story here. (UPDATE: Mark Richt confirmed today that Cuff did, indeed, run a 4.24. Richt said he saw it.)
- Remember Bill Gullickson, the former major-league pitcher? Went 162-136 in 14 seasons with the Expos, Reds, Yankees, Astros and Tigers in the ’80s and early ’90s. His daughter is Chelsey Gullickson, the Georgia sophomore tennis player who won the NCAA singles championship Monday.

Bradberry
- Rex Bradberry, who had worked with Georgia’s strength and conditioning program as an intern and a graduate assistant, is now a full-time staffer and will serve as the football team’s nutritionist -– a new position. Bradberry earned his Ph.D. in Kinesiology at UGA this spring, with research interests in injury prevention, nutrition and speed development. He is a former Georgia walk-on player under Jim Donnan.
- Georgia’s softball team travels today to Oklahoma City, its second consecutive trip to the College World Series. The Bulldogs (48-11) open against defending national champion Washington (50-7) at 9:30 p.m. Thursday on ESPN2.

Herchel ran the 40 in 3.89. Check it.
I checked. He never ran anything close to that.

GEORGIA IS AN AVERAGE FOOTBALL TEAM COMPARED TO ALABAMA AND FLORIDA. HELL, CROMPTON AND TENNESSEE TORCHED THE GEORGIA SECONDARY THAT JUST WANDERED AROUND.AND GEORGIA HAD FIVE DEFENSIVE COORDINATORS TURN THE DEFENSIVE COORDINATORS POST DOWN—–INCLUDING A REJECTION BY THEIR OWN KIRBY SMART. FINALLY A GUY WAS HIRED THAT GOT FIRED BY THE CLEVELAND BROWNS.
IN THE LAST FOUR YEARS RICHT IS 20-12 IN THE SEC. RICHT HAS ONLY A 69% WINNING PERCENTAGE IN THE SEC. GEORGIA HASN’T BEEN TO THE TITLE GAME IN HALF A DECADE.WE GO 4-4 IN THE CONFERENCE LAST YEAR AND WIN A TRIP TO THE INDEPENDENCE BOWL?
RICHT IS TALKING DREAM TEAM WHILE URBAN MEYER AND NICK SABAN LIVE IT! IT IS TIME FOR RICHT TO GO!

You gotta have sick speed when running from the 5-0 in Athens. Anybody that believes he’s a 10th of a second faster than C.J. Spiller is an idiot. But then again this is a UGA blog. And someone on here did actually have to look up whether or not Herschel ran a 3.89 40.(as suggested by someone else on this blog, which most people realized was a joke) So the collective IQ isn’t exactly off the charts.. Gotta love Georgia fans talking about how fast their players are and how they are going to shock the world this year. Typical.

Lets all collectively drink from the AJC fire hose and win it all this year! Nothing can stop this diesel engine with a freshman QB and first year 3-4 defense. The other teams on our schedule should just forfeit the games now and save the embarrassment of losing to the Dawgs. With CMR at the helm we can’t lose- preseason that is. Plus, we’ve got the fastest player in America in Cuff. You haven’t heard squat about him yet but you this year! Wait to you see our defense this year! And some of these freshmen are going to be world beaters this year! And Murray will prove all the haters wrong this year by leading us to an SEC championship.
Do you guys realize how stupid this makes you look EVERY YEAR??

I really hate the run the table talk just like I hated the no. 1 and national championship talk. What’s the need for all the added pressure UGA fans let’s grow up and enjoy the season for the game, if you let a loss take away your joy of the game then dissappointment is always around the corner, of course I’ve played on some stinkers in my past so it’s a little easier for me. The great seasons always seem to come out of nowhere any way, along with some new faces we haven’t seen before.

How fast is he with the pads on is the question I want answered. Deion Sanders, Herschel Walker, Darrel Green….those guys were fast in pads. If Cuff can show speed in pads, cover, and tackle, then I’m impressed.

Speed didn’t hurt Deon Sanders.
But Sanders was a moron prone to get in trouble with the law.
Like most of the UGA players.
Oh goodie, it’s going to be fun watching the dawgies “run the table” this year.

Doesn’t matter how fast you are, if you don’t where to go. This speedster
had ZERO interceptions last year—all that speed just gets him
out of position faster.

I love being a delusional GA fan, every year, hope springs eternal. I’m assuming everyone saw Mr. Steele’s prediction that GA would win the MNC. That is exactly what he said, “GA will win MNC”. You kind of have to read between the lines, but that’s what he said.

Times are fine for the off season, but let’s put it to use during the season. It is kind of like weightlifting. You may be strong in the weight room, but how do you respond when you are hit in the mouth. I have never seen a weight hit back.

Half the fans are saying UGA will be bad, 7 wins or less. Half the fans think 10 wins or better. So the correct answer is 8-4. This season reminds me a lot of 2006 when UGA was breaking in a new QB in Matt Stafford. Which means they will probably lose to some teams like Mississppi State or South Carolina, lose a close one to Florida, have a blowout win over an Arkansas or Auburn on the way to ending the season with a squeaker win over Tech. Dawgs will probably go to Outback or Chick-fil-A bowl to finish 9-4 or 8-5 overall.

Judging from Cuff’s stats, his brain is just too slow for his feet, maybe if he ran slower
his brain could catch up and maybe even get into position to make a play–naw, the kid just wants to run fast.

Now this guy is fast—-has the fastest time (electronic) (not some hand held time by a jawja coach) of 10.11 in the 100 meter dash. This kid also starts, these are last years stats: Jeffery Demps 96 att, 738 yards , 7.7 avg per att and 7 TDs. He really will blow past Cuff, since Cuff will be on the bench.
