The UGA notebook: Vance Cuff’s 40 time is something to write home about (UPDATED)

Good morning from Destin, where SEC athletics directors and coaches begin four days of meetings today.  (I’ll be tweeting from the meetings, so please follow @ajcuga on Twitter for news, notes and anecdotes.) Before turning to the business of the SEC, let’s run through a few UGA items that have accumulated:

  • Georgia cornerback Vance Cuff tells his hometown newspaper, the Moultrie Observer, that he ran the 40-yard dash this spring in 4.24 seconds, the fastest ever recorded by a UGA football player. Now, granted, 40-yard dash times aren’t exactly the most reliable records in the world of sports. But a 4.24 clocking is definitely something to write home about. “It hasn’t soaked in yet,” Cuff told the Moultrie paper. Check out the story here. (UPDATE: Mark Richt confirmed today that Cuff did, indeed, run a 4.24. Richt said he saw it.)
  • Remember Bill Gullickson, the former major-league pitcher? Went 162-136 in 14 seasons with the Expos, Reds, Yankees, Astros and Tigers in the ’80s and early ’90s. His daughter is Chelsey Gullickson, the Georgia sophomore tennis player who won the NCAA singles championship Monday.

    Bradberry

    Bradberry

  • Rex Bradberry, who had worked with Georgia’s strength and conditioning program as an intern and a graduate assistant, is now a full-time staffer and will serve as the football team’s nutritionist -– a new position. Bradberry earned his Ph.D. in Kinesiology at UGA this spring, with research interests in injury prevention, nutrition and speed development. He is a former Georgia walk-on player under Jim Donnan.
  • Georgia’s softball team travels today to Oklahoma City, its second consecutive trip to the College World Series. The Bulldogs (48-11) open against defending national champion Washington (50-7) at 9:30 p.m. Thursday on ESPN2.

Tim – Enough already of the run the table talk. You media guys take a statement like that and hype it to the hilt. Then clowns like Kincade bash Georgia fans for “unrealistic expectations”. Let’s beat SC then Ark and take the rest as they come………

Read the article stockdog. He ran a 4.27 and wasn’t happy with it. He ran it again and ran a 4.24. Fastest time clocked at UGA.

Stockdog, I think you’re right, but still a little off on the 40 time. I’d say he ran a 4.2875 or possibly a 4.2773.

With the win? Hand-timed, or electronic? Anyway, holy crappies, that’s fast!

By the way, I wonder if they time the backpedal speed on CBs…

Richt raved about Vance all summer. He’s going to be Georgia’s shutdown corner, he shut down AJ all summer long. Georgia doesn’t play anyone that has a great #2 WR besides Ark, so if cuff can develop into a shutdown corner, really opens some things up. He’s the key to the defense.

If you want to see a phenom check out Alec Ogletree on youtube. He may bring back the head hunting days we saw with Greg Blue and Thomas Davis. He could easily see plenty of playing time as a freshmen.

So, he’s entering his 5th and final year, and still looking for his first interception? Maybe it’s his bone-jarring tackles that are to be feared, but at 177 lbs, guess that’s not it either? Oh well, I bet he looks good running onto the field fast!

Wasn’t B. Evans considered the fastest guy on the team while he was at UGA? Speed’s great, but gotta be a football player, too. I just can’t get the replay of Bebe stiff-arming him and then outrunning him for a 75 yd TD last year.

Deoin Sanders could F-L-Y at 4.29 in the 40.

Vance Cuff’s 4.24 wasn’t clocked officially like Deion’s, but if it was even off by 1/2 a seond, that’s still Deoinesque speed.

And yes, Cuff’s skills are superb–he shut down AJ Green all Spring.

Yeah, “Sunny Day” and Georgias pass defense this year is going to be amazing. Last year (2009) they were just wetting our appetite:

Cuff & Boykin got most improved Spring players on defense. They will be very, very good under Lakatos, his corners at UConn were in the top 10 for pass effiency. Lakatos also shut down South Carolina’s passing game in the Bowl game, which Florida coud not do.

Percy Harvin had 4.41 speed in the 40, so 4.3 or lower is Freakish.

The forty times, imo are overrated. Bryan Evans was clocked at 4.26 a few years ago and he couldn’t cover Hairy Dawg. Has to be smart and be able to tackle. I just hope he’s improved enough to where he won’t try and tackle a guy like D. Thomas from Tech at the shoulders. I still think Branden Smith may be the fastest player in the open field. Looking forward to kickoff.

Countdown- 96 days to go!!!

The 40-yard dash time is one of the most unreliable and irrelevant indicators of a football player’s success. If you’re having to print meaningless stuff like this to pump up the UGA fans, then things are pretty bad.

Nothing is going to improve football at UGA until CMR is replaced with a winning coach. Charlie Strong is out there just waiting for the $$$ to be offered.

Richt is to UGA as Paul Hewitt is to Tech. In other words, he’ll be a big winner once every ten years or so, and only when the talent he has has already been coached up before they get to college. That doesn’t happen very often, especially with a football team.

It’s definitely not going to happen at UGA this year. Florida will administer the usual beatdown on UGA, and even if UGA pulled off a miracle, they can’t get by Alabama.

So stop getting excited about silly stuff like 40-yard dash times.

Someone is lying about Cuff’s time. Probably Cuff.

But I guess all UGA athletes lie, especially when questioned by the police.

florida emphasizes speed. Obviously, for corners in the SEC, speed is critical. Good to know the Georgia corners can all motor.
