Phil Steele: Georgia Bulldogs ‘could very well run the table’ this year

If you missed it,  you’ll want to hear what college football analyst/publisher Phil Steele said when asked on ESPN to name an off-the-radar team that could have a big season.

He initially mentioned Oklahoma, his pick to win the 2010 national title despite losing five games last season.

And then he mentioned someone else:

“If I was going to pick another one out of the stack there,” Steele said Friday on ESPN’s College Football Live, “I would have to say the Georgia Bulldogs. I think they’ve got a shot of even winning the SEC East and could very well run the table.”

Wow. Whoa. Run the table?

Steele doesn’t go so far as to predict the Bulldogs will do it, mind you. In fact, he has them No. 19 in his preseason rankings. But I’m pretty sure he’s the first to utter on national TV the possibility of  an undefeated season for the 2010 Dogs.

Phil Steele’s College Football Preview magazine is always packed with information. Here are a few morsels pulled from his two-page preview of Georgia in this year’s edition  (the abbreviations are his way of conserving space to cram in more info):

  • “The 17 total QB int [last season] were the most at UGA since 1984.”
  • “Surprisingly heading into ‘07 UGA had just one 1,000 yd back since ‘92!”
  • “UGA had a pair of 100 yd rushers vs GT (Ealey and King) but just three 100 yd efforts all year and I look for significant improvement.”
  • “Figgins returns and Green is back to full health making UGA my #2 receiving corps in the NCAA.”
  • “The [offensive line] unit has an amazing 155 career starts (counting Justin Anderson who moved to the DL in spg) which is #1 in the FBS (my #1 OL unit).”
  • “Even with the loss of their star [linebacker], provided this unit stays healthier, it should be stronger.”
  • “This [defensive backfield]  is a less exp’d unit and my biggest concern on the 2010 team.”

Interesting stuff once again, Phil Steele.

I have been saying this for months. Look at the creampuff schedule. If somehow, someway we can run Ealey and King over the top of the mighty gator…THEN WE SHOULD GO UNDEFEATED.
(…and yes, you will find my Idaho State and Louisana tickets for sale on Ebay later this summer.)

We go on the road to a hot steamy Columbia and our Offense must come up big, then we come home to host Puketrino and the Piggies and our Defense must come up big. We’ll learn a lot about this team in the first 3 games.

There are a lot of solid pieces to this team. Defense will be the key. The D surely can’t be worse than it’s been the last two years.

How far we go will come down to breaks.

WE ARE LAUGHING OUTLOUD! ALABAMA AND FLORIDA HAVE CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS WITH CHAMPIONSHIP COACHES. GEORGIA IS AN AVERAGE TEAM WITH AVERAGE COACHES. GEORGIA TALKS ABOUT DREAM TEAMS WHILE NICK SABAN AND URBAN MEYER DEVELOP THEM. THE TALKING IS OVER FOR RICHT. HE HAS JUST A 69% WINNING PERCENTAGE IN THE SEC. HE HASN’T EVEN BEEN TO THE TITLE GAME IN HALF A DECADE! THIS IS A DELUSIONAL ARTICLE WITH ZERO BASIS IN REALITY.

Richt has proven he knows how to win, with 2 SEC titles, #2 and #3 national rankings, with Florida being the only SEC school with a winning record against him. Possibly a little complaceny, and certainly too much loyalty to some members of the coaching staff caused the program to drop off some. The problems mentioned above appear to have been corrected. Look for the Dogs to make a run in 2010 at the SEC title, and a national title run in 2011.

They must have had a joint venture with Georgia State to actually form a sorority at there.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, UGA could possibly go 10-2 or even 11-1. But, they will have to do more than “look good on paper”. The talent is there, but they will have to show MAJOR improvement in the the turnover and penalty departments (discipline and accountability). Not to mention the D must show that they can keep teams under 20 points consistently.
Lots of questions to be answered before any can beat their chest.
Hope ya’ll are undefeated heading to Jax!

By the way, what’s with all the Dawg fans that always have to refer to UF as “Gaytors”? Are they actually closet cases themselves? Or are they just so insecure in their own sexuality that they’ve become homophobic? Or are they just simple minded rednecks that don’t know any beter? Has to be one of the three.

UGA “could very well run the table” yet this guy picks them 17th? Who’s Figgins?

Credibility NOT.

UGA does, on paper, have their easiest schedule in years. Lot of questions tho’ with new QB, new DC (has to be an improvement over WM tho’ he was 4th choice) and D personnel that can fit 3-4 scheme.

Like 1eyedJack said, we’ll know more after SC and Ark.

Doesn’t get under my skin. I just find it juvenile. You won’t find me calling UGA any of the silly names that the Tech folks do.
By the way, how does it feel to be inferior to “Gaytors” in almost every damn sport we field a team in?

Is Georgia capable of going undefeated? Without a doubt. But, they are also just as capable of going 7-5 again. As was said earlier, we will know what the Dawgs have after the SC and Ark games.

I do have one other nitpick – the person saying Georgia is a dark horse to go undefeated IS PHIL STEELE NOT UGA FANS!!! Anyone with an IQ over 25 that reads these blogs would know that 99.9999999999999999999% of georgia fans are saying 8-4 to 10-2 is the most likely result for the Dawgs this year.

Tech fans need to get a life and talk about their own teams weak recruiting class.

Lap, Lap, Lap, here that Bulldog fans? That’s Tim Tucker serving up the annual Bulldog Kool-Aid and Dawgie fans lapping it up. No established running back, a freshman QB that’s never taken a snap, a brand new defensive coordinator and a brand new defense. Sounds like the formula for an undefeated season, if you live in the state of Georgia (delusion).

I’m a UGA grad and longtime fan, but I prefer to let the team prove itself on the field. This article almost qualifies as hyperbole. Regardless, it’s great fodder for the regular Posters and the AJC knows it.

Does the AJC.com qualify as a tabloid?

Looking at the schedule and given that the defense plays better and gels during the season, I see 3 maybe 4 games before we play Florida that we have to be concerned about. South Carolina, Arkansas, Miss State, and Tennessee are these teams. Not really Miss State, but we cant overlook them. Beating these teams, we would probably be undefeated before we play Florida. I don’t care what nobody says, if this happens, and we beat Florida, the only team left that would be a challenge would be Auburn. I can see this happening, but UGA still has to take it one game at a time.

Oh and I wanted to add, everyone knows Florida wont be undefeated this year, they will lose to Alabama, so they wont even be in discussion for a NC..just saying

One, two…..Enjoy your good times. It is all cyclical. Look at Bama, on top of the world for so long, and then they fell for years! Now, they are coming back.
As a gator, go back and remember (if you are cap;able or old enough) the years before SS came along as the coach for you. You talk about the last twenty years, so look at the twenty before that. Our day will be back.

You are grossly incorrect when you say “everyone”.

Hope springs eternal! That’s why I love the year round analysis of college football in the deep south. We COULD go undefeated, but we also have tough games in South Carolina, Arkansas, Florida, Auburn, Tech and Mississippi State is tough at home. It would be hard for me to believe, even with all the positives we have, that undefeated would be a realistic possibility.

Home of mediocrity, who do you like?

Happy Dawg,
I remember those years well. I’ve been sitting in the same seat at Florida field since 1971. If felt like we NEVER beat UGA when I was grwoing up. Our mantra was “wait till next year”.
Well, next year has been here for the past 20 years.
By the way, UF has an winning record against UGA post WWII. How far back do you want to go?

Happy Dawg, you’re right! Beating Georgia is cyclical and Florida just happens to be in a 25 year cycle with Georgia beating them consistently in just about every sport. Funny, Georgia is at the point it’s recruiting players that have only been alive only to see Georgia beat Florida in three football games. Can you say credibility gap?

One, two…..Want to start at 1950, twenty more years, and the record from then to SS is 15-15-1. Wish you could have been in the Gator Bowl stadium in 1968, pouring cats and dogs to the point that we had to sit down within the first ten rows to even see the field and game. It wasn’t hard to find a seat, however, in that downpour. Final score, UGA 51, FL 0. It was worth the wet cloths!
Hey, it has been a good contest. It will change as I said, someday. Just the way it is.
