If you missed it, you’ll want to hear what college football analyst/publisher Phil Steele said when asked on ESPN to name an off-the-radar team that could have a big season.
He initially mentioned Oklahoma, his pick to win the 2010 national title despite losing five games last season.
And then he mentioned someone else:
“If I was going to pick another one out of the stack there,” Steele said Friday on ESPN’s College Football Live, “I would have to say the Georgia Bulldogs. I think they’ve got a shot of even winning the SEC East and could very well run the table.”
Wow. Whoa. Run the table?
Steele doesn’t go so far as to predict the Bulldogs will do it, mind you. In fact, he has them No. 19 in his preseason rankings. But I’m pretty sure he’s the first to utter on national TV the possibility of an undefeated season for the 2010 Dogs.
Phil Steele’s College Football Preview magazine is always packed with information. Here are a few morsels pulled from his two-page preview of Georgia in this year’s edition (the abbreviations are his way of conserving space to cram in more info):
Interesting stuff once again, Phil Steele.

We go on the road to a hot steamy Columbia and our Offense must come up big, then we come home to host Puketrino and the Piggies and our Defense must come up big. We’ll learn a lot about this team in the first 3 games.

WE ARE LAUGHING OUTLOUD! ALABAMA AND FLORIDA HAVE CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS WITH CHAMPIONSHIP COACHES. GEORGIA IS AN AVERAGE TEAM WITH AVERAGE COACHES. GEORGIA TALKS ABOUT DREAM TEAMS WHILE NICK SABAN AND URBAN MEYER DEVELOP THEM. THE TALKING IS OVER FOR RICHT. HE HAS JUST A 69% WINNING PERCENTAGE IN THE SEC. HE HASN’T EVEN BEEN TO THE TITLE GAME IN HALF A DECADE! THIS IS A DELUSIONAL ARTICLE WITH ZERO BASIS IN REALITY.

Richt has proven he knows how to win, with 2 SEC titles, #2 and #3 national rankings, with Florida being the only SEC school with a winning record against him. Possibly a little complaceny, and certainly too much loyalty to some members of the coaching staff caused the program to drop off some. The problems mentioned above appear to have been corrected. Look for the Dogs to make a run in 2010 at the SEC title, and a national title run in 2011.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, UGA could possibly go 10-2 or even 11-1. But, they will have to do more than “look good on paper”. The talent is there, but they will have to show MAJOR improvement in the the turnover and penalty departments (discipline and accountability). Not to mention the D must show that they can keep teams under 20 points consistently.
Lots of questions to be answered before any can beat their chest.

Looking at the schedule and given that the defense plays better and gels during the season, I see 3 maybe 4 games before we play Florida that we have to be concerned about. South Carolina, Arkansas, Miss State, and Tennessee are these teams. Not really Miss State, but we cant overlook them. Beating these teams, we would probably be undefeated before we play Florida. I don’t care what nobody says, if this happens, and we beat Florida, the only team left that would be a challenge would be Auburn. I can see this happening, but UGA still has to take it one game at a time.
Oh and I wanted to add, everyone knows Florida wont be undefeated this year, they will lose to Alabama, so they wont even be in discussion for a NC..just saying

I wasn’t in attendance that day. I was only a year old. Like I said earlier, we pretty much expected to lose to UGA back then. Before SOS arrived, UF had gone 4-15 against UGA in the games that I attended. Dooley sure had our number! I know that everything runs in cycles, but with the facilities, fan support, booster money, in-state recruting, etc I really don’t think you’re going to see UF return to mediocrity in football anytime soon. Not saying they will win championships every year, but they should be VERY competetive year in and year out.
Once again, hope ya’ll are undefeated heading down to Jax!

The dawgs have a good shot of going undefeated this season, depending on Bobo’s atrocious play calling. Aaron Murray will improve the offense immensely because of his accuracy, mobility and his ability to hit his targets. This kid can execute plays. I always said that is they can get a pretty good defensive coordinator to coach our talentive kids that the dawgs will evenually win a national championship. It could happen this season.

I really hate any press from ESPN like that. It is just too much like 2008. The SEC is just too tough to go in to any season thinking of running the table. I think we will have a great year, but we need to be realistic and be thinking of 10-2 with an SEC title game in the dome. That would be a success.

Run the table? Dream on, doggies.
It’s kind of sad to see all the Dawg fans getting so excited this year (just like the year before, the year before that, etc.). How long is it going to take for UGA fans to realize that UGA is simply no longer relevant in the SEC? In the national picture, UGA isn’t even a blip on the radar, and hasn’t
been since the preseason #1 ranking two years ago.
Sit back and be grateful for the seven or eight wins you’ll get every year. Coaching genius Mark Richt may take you to 10-2 or even 11-1 occasionally, but Florida will still win the SEC, meaning no BCS bowls and no top 15 final ranking. Most years, UGA will be very lucky to finish in the top 25, and only after a big bowl win over a nobody opponent.
It’s a different world now, and Dawg fans, like FSU and Ole Miss fans, need to adjust their expectations downward to reflect reality.
Unfortunately nothing is going to change until UGA changes its mediocre coaching. That’s where the difference is, and that’s why everyone outside Bulldog Nation just laughs at Dawg fans getting so excited year after year about what a great recruiting class UGA gets. It doesn’t matter how many
blue chip high school plays go to UGA, they simply don’t get the coaching they would get at Florida or Alabama, to name two schools whose programs are far ahead of UGA. And that’s not going to change as long as Mark Richt is in Athens.
Get your heads out of the sand and face reality. And mediocrity and irrelevance.

Ok Naysayers, we now have 2 HIGHLY CREDIBLE college football sources saying Georgia can win the SEC East, and maybe more.
First, you have Scout.com raving about Georgia’s O-Line, AJ Green, Ealey, Kicker, Punter, Linebackers, and defensive line.

Now we have Phil Steele, perhaps the BEST forecaster in college football, raving about the Dogs.
I’m going with these 2 experts opinions, over the lone cynical blogger here on the AJC site.
yes, the Dogs will win the SEC East, the SEC, and the National Championship.

The Dawgs are on the brink of greatness, even Phil Steele can see it. Murray is a freshman phenom (couldn’t beat out Mettenberger), the OL is awsome (8th in rushing last year), RB’s are awsome (see 8th in rushing last year). The defense is obviously ready to peak (scoring defense #10 & total defense #8) a new defensive coordinator with a new defensive scheme. Funny, how certain writers at ESPN see Georgia pre-season outside the top 20, and Steele says in his power ratings Georgia is #7 or #8 in the country. Sounds right as a good start.
After Georgia blows out South Carolina & Arkansas, that’s correct, BLOWOUT wins by 20+ in BOTH games, then Georgia should vault into the top 5, and after Georgia BLOWS OUT Florida by 20+ points, should move into the top 3. After Georgia wins the SEC Championship, should be ranked either #1 or #2, and play for it all, and win that by 20+ too.

Defense wins championships. When you have the guy Saban tired to hire, Muschamp recommended, that trained the Bama defense for years recently in the off-season running the Georgia D, and the LB Coach from anderbilt who’s LB’s lead in tackles, and the seconday coach form UCOnn who’s DB’s lead in pass efficiency, you have to think, Richt just outsmarted the competition, pun intended.

The offense is LOADED, best I’ve EVER seen in the SEC. loaded out of the gills AT every single offensive position, the O-Line is the most experienced in the country. AJ, Ealey, King, Olson, White, T. Holy mackerel! Are you guys forgetting the product on the field last year? A new DC that failed at his one and only time as a DC and a new QB that was #2 or #3 in your own spring game are going to come into the best conference in the nation and turn it upside down in one year? I think most Dawg fans are smart enough to take a wait and see approach but some of you on here are just plain silly. I guess that’s why they call it the “lunatic fringe”. I understand that UF has some key peices to replace but that’s from a team that just went 26-2 over the last couple of years. I still don’t see any UF fans saying that we’re going to run the table and beat everyone we play this year.

The key to figuring out where Georgia will be, will be the scoring margin after game 3. If it’s 14+, gonna be a great year. If it’s +1 like last season, gonna be a bad year.
You have to think this offense will socre AT LEAST 7 MORE points a game than last year, and the new defensive staff will hold the other team to AT LEAST 7 points LESS than last year’s average.
If Georgia can be up around a 20+ scoring margin, then penalties, turnovers, and bad calls won’t matter, & they’ll win it all, like Miami under Jimmy Johnson.

The pre-season fell and hype reminds me of 2002 & 2007. Steele came out with his predictions that went against the rest f the media, and Georgia fans got pumped up, and things turned out well both times, finishing in the top 3 in the country. This year has the same feel.
Also, back in 2005, with a new QB, everybody had Georgia #3 in the SEC East. Finished #1. Steele got that one right too.

HEY UGAG: With your Joke of a schedule and only playing UF at # 3 and GT at # 13, you have a chance. However, you will choke and lose a couple of games you shouldn’t and there is NO WAY you beat UF, so don’t start rubbing one out yet. Even if you go undefeated, which you won’t, but say you do, you will lose in the SEC Championship and your SOS must be like 150 or something. If that happens, you will be overlooked, which will be a great site to see. You won’t go undefeated! You will definately lose to UF, like every year. GT has a chance to beat you, as does SC in Columbia with Spurrier (Your Favorite Coach) returning 9 starters on offense and their QB, Garcia who is light years better than Murray. Also, the 6′7″ Arkansas QB in Mallet will beat you like a Mallet, as he will throw all over your team in Athens. UGA loses at least 3 games, even with the HS schedule you play. You should be ashamed of your schedule. Also, if everyone thought you were so good, you would be ranked higher than the projected # 19. It’s great to see all you rednecks getting excited, only to be slapped arounf like lost puppies in a doggy pound. Wake up and smell the coffee, as the mutts won’t be there at the end of the year! The O-Line only gave up 12 sacks, and averaged over 240 yards rushing per game over the last 5 games. #1 unit in the country.

Any of you guys around back in 79? Georgia went 6-7 that year. Pretty much everybody went with concensus and said 1980 would be a bad year for Georgia. They said you just don’t go from 6-7 to 12-0 in 1 year, the jump is too big, the improvement is not realisitic.
They were wrong. 12-0, National Champs.
The key to 1980 was the O-Line and a great running back. The O-Line has over 150 games under em’ and Ealey ran the ball about as well as any back has ran the ball at Georgia at almost 6 yards a pop.

Kosar was a red-shirt freshman coming off a bad year at Miami. Kosar had won Parade All American coming out of High School, highly skilled.
Miami’s coach promised the city a National Championship. He believed this was the year. Miami’s coach was trying to turn the college into QBU, like Penn St. had turned Penn St into LBU.
What happened in 1983?
Kosar threw for about 200 yards a game, completed 61% of his passes, and 15 td’s. He threw for 300 yards and 2 td’s in the Natl Championship and won the game against Nebraska 31-30.
Murray also won Parade All-American, was also red-shirted, will also start all 12 games, and will also come on after a bad season where expectations are low nationally, but through the roof high locally.
Miami’s coach promised a National Championship, when no one really believed him, and in 1983, with a red-shirt freshman QB, he delivered.

You know, I heard an interview with him (Steele) last week on ESPN. He has Oklahoma ranked #1, over Bama at #3. The majority of the interview was about that, however towards the end the ESPN crew asked him who was the sleeper of the year, off everyone’s radar. He answered the Georgia Bulldogs. I about choked on my drink since there had been absolutely zero talk about UGA on the show all year. Well, other than a mention of AJ Green here and there but I digress..
We have a solid team, but we have a couple of HUGE question marks on the team. And it’s how those questions are answered that will make our season.

Hutson Mason or Gray will likely be to the QB after the 1st 2 or 3 games. Murray’s a gunslinger who will throw too many interceptions, and Richt will have to go to someone else to try and stop the Joe Cox season from happening. Not worried about the QB position. Between Murray, Mason, and Gray, 2 Elite 11 QB’s & a Parade All American, we can find someone to manage the game without taking too many risks.

Loving the big bruisers upfront. Lot of future NFL guys on this O-Line. Loving the 12 sacks, loving the 250 yards a game over the last 5 games. Loving the 155 games of experience and the depth and cross training skills of this O-Line unit.
Bama ran the ball well last year, that’s what it takes to dominate the SEC. I don’t see anybody stopping this O-Line, even if they stick 8 in the box, like Ga Tech did, you might see King or Ealey gone for 75 yards.
O-Line is the key.

OL, if it stays healthy, I agree it is the best in America I know of. Disagree with the recieving corps – and learning a new “D”, I don’t know. I do agree with the Secondary, suspect at best – I think “D” will be an overall weak link, but headed in the right direction under Grantham. “O”, extremely good, sure wish we had one more proven Reciever behind Green – I know Brown, Wooten, Charles, King, and that 6th year senior will be good – but probably not great. I see us 8-4, maybe 9-3 – and moving in a great direction. I think Richt is correct in speaking of a 5 year plan for a NC. Evans – give us a patsy schedule for once!

(input team) could run-the-table. Another astuted comment from an “expert”.
Many teams would need LOTS of miracles, but since the games are NOT played on paper or in Steele’s magazine, couldn’t ANY team “run-the-table” and win all of its games?
I’d like to see the sales figures for Steele’s magazine in Georgia for 2009 & 2010 based on what he has said/predicted — sales will easily triple or more in 2010.

They play 5 top 25 teams.
They lost 9 nfl players, most of their offense, no Strong, lost several coaches, gonna be a tough couple of years ahead for Meyer with a different QB 3 years in a row, but should get better in 2012 after the new QB is in his 2nd year.

Brantley on the other hand has played and learned from the greatest QB in a generation for two years.
Even in mop up duty, against live action, I’ll put up his stats against the best practice sessions Murray has had.
Brantley combined stats for 08 and 09 are 54 for 65 (71%), with 10 TD passes and 1 INT. His QB rating is off the chart at 178.95—-oh yea, I’ll take Brantley against your high school boy all day long

Georgia just got a lucky schdule this year, all you can say.
They don’t really even play anybody until Oct. 30, the 9th game of the season. Oh, you call Arkansas and South Carolina competition? Come on.
Georgia only plays 1 top 10 team the whole season. Last year was 4 of em’.
Arkansas & Auburn are the only teams on the schedule who can score a lot of points. Arkansas might be a closer game because they match up best and get Georgia’s defense early, but since Arkansas & Auburn don’t play defense, Georgia should go 6-0 against Arkansas and 5-0 against Auburn.

But Florida has a lot more probems than a QB that’s never been tested in high school or college. Mainly, Strong’s gone and the 9 NFL players. They also have no running game, they ran 4 running plays to their backs in the SEC championship game.

Florida will lose to Alabama & LSU, so Georgia wins the SEC East, even if they lose to Florida, the only good team on Richt’s schedule he doesn’t have a dominating record (S. Car/Ark/Aub/Ga Tech).

I bet they lose to south carolina, ark mallet is capable of hanging 45 on the dawgs, i don’t care where its played and likely ugay loses that one. The gators game will be another bow out and they will lose to auburn as well. I would say if there is a game ugay fans will overlook it’s miss st and the spread offense. They scored on everyone and played the gators tough for 3 quarters! Hell, GT beat miss st worse than florida did! The Gt game will be 50/50.. a toss up. All of the hot wind and blather that been posted aside, and man was there a ton of it, this is a talented UGA squad, with a lighter schedule, a weak SECE and a new tone, on D. Combine that with one of the best returning OL’s and skill players, other than QB and this squad could be pretty respectable. If said QB can just be decent, we could do some damage.

You guys talk too much generalities. The reason the gators will kick uga’s butt yet again is their offensive line. It consists of Xavier Nixon, Carl Johnson, Mike Pouncey, Maurice Huurt (from Millegeville), and Marcus Gilbert. Year after year Richt and Bobo insist on ignoring the obvious and continue to start the likes of Clint Boling over Josh Davis, Ben Jones over Chris Burnette, and incredibly, Chris Davis over Bean Anderson. They continue to deny the obvious and in their combined arrogance think they can beat Florida by playing inferior talent. It is and will continue to be a recipe for disaster. Richt stated after last’s years Fla. debacle. ” Well, here we are again.” what does the man expect. He got what he deserved. Thanks again for James Carpenter and Chance Warmack. Keep ‘em comming UGA!

Mark Richt has averaged 3 conference losses over the past four years:
2006 4-4

2008 6-2
2009 4-4
This is with the same offensive line we have now.

One other thing. Phil Steele thought because D.J. Shockley successfully followed David Greene that Joe Cox would successfully follow Matt Stafford. In other words, cox = shockley. This same guy has Boling 1st team all sec, and James Carpenter 2nd. Carpenter is the georgia kid that basically blocked ala. to a national title. Phil Steele is a joke. Roll Tide.

One, two, free, fo….. you hit the nail on the head my friend (even though you are a gator, but you speak the truth). We have absolutely killed ourselves the last few years with very undisciplined play. Would we have won the games we lost due to the numerous turnovers and penalties ? Who knows, but by committing them we didnt even give ourselves a chance. If we can cut down on those two things we will be better this year – if not then more of the same things we have been seeing. As far as us running the table, I dont see it. Another poster was right that we will know a lot more about our team after SC and Arky. I am concerned about quarterback (I hope Coach Richt is right), and this is pretty much the same OLine that was highly touted last year and underperformed. Defense was lost last year, I am sure coach G will get that turned around quickly (ooooh to have a junkyard D again….), however there is a learning curve so we are just going to have to be patient. yes the schedule is a bit easier than the last couple, but to tell you the truth I like playing quality games OOC. This is nothing new – we used to play UCLA, BYU, Cal, Texas A&M, etc… back in the 70’s/80’s (I know, I know – the SEC schedule wasnt as full back then). So, keep a cupcake, add a quality OOC and then tech.
Going off on another tangent – whats up with our athletic teams this year ? Not just football, but baseball didnt even qualify for SEC tourney, gymnastics didnt qualify for Nationals after having won the last 5 NC, basketball didnt do well, swimming/diving and golf didnt do as well.

Auburn 4-0
South Carolina 7-2
Florida 2-7
No one’s even ranked in the top 25 except Ark, Florida, and Ga Tech. Richt’s record against Ark & S Car is 12-2.

Richt has gotten real results and, just as he followed 2001 & 2006, pretty bad seasons by Richt’s standards, with a top 3 finish, it’s realistic to expect him to follow a dissapointing 4-4 SEC season with a top 3 type year again. Phil Steele is an idiot if he thinks GA can run the table. They have a green QB who didn’t look good at all in spring drills. They’re changing their defense. They have to beat South Carolina, Florida, and Auburn for starters. Bet against it. Bet the farm.

“I’ve seen murray and brantley play—murray’s a lot better. He played big time high school ball and brantley played at some small school. Look for Grantham’s D to pressure brantley into some INTs—Ga wins that game easy. Gators: tebow’s gone, spikes is gone and the run is over—book it.”
Brantley played high school football at Trinity Catholic in Ocala, FL and set numerous Floirda High School records for passing, touchdowns, etc… He was also the Gatorade Offensive Player of the Year coming out of that “small school.” He’s a solid four inches taller than Murray and I think Murray will be a good QB, just not his first year out. Dawg fans better back of on putting the pressure on Murray or they are going to have this season meltdown on them, give the kid some time to develop. Brantley high school bio below.

With a couple of breaks, UGA could win the SEC—florida’s way down, bama lost 9 starters on D. Ga can beat florida, since fla lost their top 4 players on O and D. The rest of the SEC east will be terrible, so UGA should win the east pretty easily. Look for the dawgs to go 11-1, win the east and play bama for the SEC. 2010—the year of the Dawg—mark it down!!!

WOW, run the table? No way that..
-UGA beats UF. UF’s defense is elite. UGA’s isn’t. People raving about UGA’s DLine?? They had a very good 4-3 line, but UGA doesn’t have anyone to play the true 0 tech 3-4 NT spot. If the guards of teams like UF are allowed to get to the second level and block UGA’s undersized LBs, then it’s going to be a LONG day. UF’s entire two deep on the DL will be 5*s who have at least 2 years in the system. It only gets worse from there. UF’s LB are very solid. Their weakest link might be John Bostic. LOL, UGA dfoesn’t even have a LB of Bostic caliber on their entire roster. Then the DB. The DB depth is scary good. Best in the nation, no doubt about it. UF will be a starting a redshirt junior QB, UGA’s will be a redshirt freshman. UGA has a lot of talent, but not on the same level as UF. UGA will need to find a DT NT in the mold of Terrance Cody for the 2011 class. A couple big fast OLBs wouldn’t hurt either. Give Todd G 2 years to get that D up to speed and Murray the chance to mature in the system and by 2012 UGA should be on UF’s level…

in 1990 tech had to split it with colorado but yet they did not play each other in the national championship game and that year tech played there bowl game in the citrus bowl which is now called the capital one bowl
facts are facts….. its not a national championship game if you do not play the other team vying for a national championship

And, according to Florida fans, Georgia:
1- Does not have 155 games of experience in the O-Line
2- O-Line did not give up just 12 sacks last year
3- Running game didn’t average over 240 a game over last 7 games
4- Ealey is not averaging 5.7 yards per carry, King isn’t getting 5.2, Smith isn’t getting 12.2 yards per carry
5- TE’s Charles, White, Lynch did not average 15+ yards a catch
6- WR’s Wooten, King, Troupe did not all average 17+ yards a catch
7- AJ Green is not that good
8- Richt has not won 90 games in 9 seasons
9- Saban didn’t try to hire Grantham, Grantham never was brought in to coach Alabama in the recent off-seasons
10 Belin’s LB’s at Vanderbilt did not finish #1 & #7 in tackles in SEC
11 Lakatos’ secondary did not finish in the top 10 in pass efficiency at UConn 2 years recently
12 Willie Martinez is still the head of the Georgia defense
13 All-American Punter & Top 3 ranked Kicker do not exist
14 Richt’s defenses did not finish in the top 20 for 7 straight year in 2001-2007
15 Richt’s teams have not finished in the top 10 13 out of the last 16 seasons
According to Florida fans, none of this is real.

Not even gonna read the crap posted by Tech fans on here… I scrolled straight down to comment.
My two cents: I think Steele and others have some reasons for optimism for a successful year but I think running the table is out of the question. Until Florida gets knocked off, they should be favorites in every SEC East game. I think Colorado may be tough out there, South Carolina is ALWAYS hard to beat in Columbia, and Georgia Tech has given us some good games in recent years and Georgia’s had to battle to win (NOTE TO TECH FANS: Notice that I complimented your program and didn’t name-call, like many of you love to do. ALSO NOTE: While Tech has played some CLOSE games vs. Georgia, Dogs are still 8-1 vs. Tech in the Richt era and 16-4 over the last 20 years and 23-7 over the last 30.)
So my prediction is a solid 9-win season, at least a shot at being 1st or 2nd in the SEC East, and (once again) a good bowl. I really think, from what I’ve read and heard, that 2011 could be the BIG year for Georgia… lotta great kids coming in next summer, plus this years fresh. and soph. classes will be a year older and wiser. Good luck Dawgs, GATA!!!

By the way, Bama fans, you have a great program, but don’t get too high and mighty… haven’t been a lot of repeat national champions in football in the last few decades, if you will check the history books. As good as Florida, LSU, Southern Cal and Texas were in recent years, none of them could repeat. It’s a tough road… be thankful for what you did and hope that your team is putting in the work to get back there.
Nobody should talk smack about the 2010 season until it gets here… that’s all i’m saying. That goes for all schools… just enjoy the games and the excitement, people, and remember that we are still THREE MONTHS AWAY from anybody playing a down… a lot can happen in that time.

Predicting an undefeated season for UGA is quite simply blustery nonsense. Saying the Dawgs are no longer relevant in the SEC East is equally nutty, if not more so.
One of the luxuries of getting older is developing an appreciation of the quality product, program, and leadership at UGA, and simply sitting back and enjoying the games and competition. UGA has the quality talent, leadership, and support program to make this a very exciting and entertaining season. I’m looking forward to watching a talented young quarterback develop, watching an exciting big-play offense, and watching the new coaches develop the new defense under fire.

DawgDad — well said, excellent points, and I agree with you 100 percent. Sometimes people forget that these are 19-year-old kids trying to balance a full-time job in the national spotlight (D-1 college football, in the SEC no less) and a full-time class load. Oh, and all the typical life struggles that 19, 20-year-olds have….
I love watching the Dawgs, it tears me up when the lose, but I realize there is always next year… not like we’re trading AJ Green or Washaun Ealey is going to retire… it’s tougher to me when a pro team misses and opportunity, because the team can drastically change from one year to the next and you might never get that shot again.
Justin — good point as well. It’s Florida, people… don’t think they will curl up and disappear just because St. Tebow left. They are still a 9-3 team and probably the favorites (along with UGA) to win the SEC East… just like the balance of power in our division has been for a decade.

mdawg — you’re right about the ACC. The level of play in that league has slowly dropped over the last 10-12 years. FSU and Miami were supposed to raise the bar when they joined… instead, they have slipped, and no other team has become a national power (Sorry Tech fans — you’re good but not national-title-picture good).
Va. Tech, Clemson, Ga. Tech, Miami… all should be good this year but all have serious flaws. A game between them and a champ from the SEC, Big 10 or Big 12 would definitely be a loss. I’m no Bama or Gator fan, but those teams in 2008 and 2009 would have wiped the floor with the ACC champ. And in recent years, the SEC has dominated the ACC (save for a few wins by Ga. Tech over Vandy and Miss. State)….
The ACC still has a ways to go before it becomes a consistent power football conference.

Gatorman… sorry, dude, UGA is much better off this summer than last… more experience in key situations, better coaching, and better quarterback potential (Murray and Mason have a ton more talent than Cox ever did). And the schedule is not quite as tough… and Richt has a great way of rebounding after a tough year (see 2007: UGA coming off a “bad” year at 9-4 winds up winning 11 games, BEATING FLORIDA and winning a BCS bowl)… now in 2010, Georgia is coming off a “terrible” season by your accounts (really? 8 wins is terrible? ask tech over the last 25 years how much they would LOVE to have an 8-win season)…. sorry, gatorman, you’re off kilter. Richt will rebound with a better staff around him and more commitment from his players. Richt at UGA will outlast Meyer at Florida, mark my words.

Jeff

1:44 am
And by the way, shouldn’t Florida fans want to have a big rivalry with Georgia, where the win means something? I mean, how big is the Florida-Vandy rivalry when you win 800 games in a row? And if Georgia is going to be so terrible, why the heck are Florida fans on a UGA blog and trying to denigrate Georgia’s program? Seems like a lot of trouble for a team that, in gatorman’s words, is going to have a “terrible” season.
Jeff

And no, Thin Guy, we’re not banking on Logan Gray… he will be 2nd or 3rd team. Georgia is building on Aaron Murray and Hutson Mason, two kids with great talent and a lot of potential. If they blossom like Greene, Shockley and Stafford all did, Georgia will be fine.
And I think even the biggest Georgia fans, when realistic, are not thinking 12-0… we’re thinking progress, one year to the next… 9 or maybe 10 wins this year, then 11 or more next season.

Run the table. Run the table. What a freaking ludicrous idea.

The following will show why jawja won’t be running any table soon, they are more likely to waiting on tables in some dive after this year.
2006 RECRUITING CLASSES
1 Southern Cal 25 5 14 6 3.9 3,018
2 Florida 27 4 17 5 3.89 2,901
3 Florida State 31 2 18 10 3.68 2,703
4 Georgia 28 2 14 12 3.64 2,436
One more nail in Richt’s coaching coffin. Pat Forde looked at the 2006 college recruiting classes: “Only four of ESPN’s 2006 top 25 recruiting classes were signed by teams that played in a BCS bowl four years later: Florida (No. 1), Texas (No. 3), Ohio State (No. 10) and Alabama (No. 18).
USC had the No. 2 class and just finished its worst season since 2001. Georgia was No. 4 and performed so poorly that Mark Richt had to shake up his staff and has himself edged toward the hot seat. Notre Dame was No. 5 and fired its coach. Florida State was No. 6 and got its legendary coach pushed into retirement.”

Gotta to tell you, Georgia’s defense is gonna rock some worlds. Kwame is about the same size as Mt. Cody, gonna be hard to run on him. 2 OLB’s can bring the heat, both are proven sackmeisters. Boykin’s a stud and Cuff has shut down AJ all Spring. The #1 defense looked stout on G-Day, and they were just running the base D. 3-4 annihilated the Florida spread, gonna be fun. Look for Georgia’s D to return back to a top D, just like 2001-2007.

Meyer is 2-2 against Alabama, got beat 32-13 last year with Tebow & Strong.
Meyer’s record of 5-4 against Alabama & LSU isn’t promising for Florida’s hopes of winning the SEC East.
Meyer almost lost to Tenn, South Carolina, and Miss St last year.
Florida St with Ponder will be a tough out for Meyer.

Still mention of Durham? Interesting… Gald to see someone mentioning Figgins; although, he is number three or four on the depth chart. UGA has exceptional depth at wide receiver. The “D” is a bigger question mark than the “O” (even with a redshirt freshman at QB). The way I see it, though. That back field is speedy, and the overall “D” will be more aggressive. They may give up some big plays getting into the new system, but they are also liable to cause a few turns.
What it really comes down to is how hard these kids work in the summer and how well they play as a team. If they set out to make Tim Tebow look like a slacker all will go really well. If they decide it’s time to get drunk for a couple of months, look for 9 wins and yet another loss to the Gators. (BTW, as a fan I am 4 and 1 versus the reptiles. Perhaps we should take up a collection to get me to Jax).
Here is hoping that Steele’s article is the only one that spouts off about the potential and that no one ranks the Dawgs higher than 15. Best to stay low key. One game at time.

No one is going to run the table in the SEC. LSU should win the west and UGA should win the east with 1 to 2 losses each. I respect Phil Steele’s opinion. His staff does a ton of research and his publication comes out later than Lindy’s which means its more accurate. He usually speaks favorably of the Dawgs and has been pretty accurate the last few seasons when gauging our program. With that being said, when he his wrong he is REALLY wrong! He was completely off the mark with Auburn in 2008, when he had them finishing first or second in the West and they bottomed out at 5-7. As good of research as Phil does on things like stats and returning starters, what trips him up is that he doesn’t pay enough attention to what is going on within the inner workings of a program which often times affects the product on the field. Auburn and Tennessee had bad seasons in 2008 not necessarily because of on field talent but because of off field issues within the program. During a normal season, I would say that UGA could be a dark horse contender. But there are too many questions regarding this program( new coaching staff, new QB, lack of depth) for this team to be a contender. Heck if this team gets bit by the injury bug, they could very well go 5-7.

Agree with what Steele said to ESPN; Georgia makes that table run this year. Steele gives some good reasons:
-Best O-Line in nation with 150+ games of experience, 240 yards a game rush over last 5, and only 12 sacks
-Best Special Teams trio of Punter/Kicker/Punt Returner
-Light schedule
-Better defense than last year due to coaching changes
With AJ & Ealey, and the #1 O-Line in front, and this easy schedule, Florida & South Carolina the only 2 good defenses on the schedule, look for Georgia’s offense to set some SEC records this Fall for yards, scoring margin, and points.
This is the best offense Richt has put on the field at Georgia and BY FAR the best offense in the SEC East.

Don’t believe me?? Well, below is a blog of his from Feb. 1, 2010, and his predictions for AP’s preseason top 10, and what he was saying then about GT (who is now unranked by Steele).
THOSE THAT JUST MISSED OUT:
I mentioned at the start of the blog that last year I had nine of the top 10 teams correctly predicted and it was the same case in 2008 where I also missed out by 1. If one of the team’s I have projected in the Top 10 doesn’t make the polls, there are 5 teams that have a shot at jumping into the Top 10.
Right now, I would project Georgia Tech to be #11 heading into the season and as mentioned, if the events between now and August are positive for GT, they could even leap past Virginia Tech as the preseason favorite in the ACC ……
Looks like the, er, bank you are “take’n er to” has been shut down by the feds.

Yep … Below, I’d say Mr Steele “rocked” this prediction, from last season, too. This is the same week that he predicted Clemson would lose to Miama (Tigers won), and that both Alabama & Florida would destroy UT & Miss St respecitvely …. and I think we all know how lucky both were to win those games.
#12 GEORGIA TECH AT VIRGINIA
Last 12 Years Matchups
Georgia Tech lost 8 straight times at Scott Stadium with their last win in 1990 when they knocked off the #1 Cavs. The home team is 12-2 but last year Georgia Tech was ranked #21 and at home, jumped out to a 14-3 lead but was outscored 21-3 the final 3Q’s, was upset at home 24-17 and was held to just 156 yards rush. Although QB Sewell has improved, he did leave the game last week with a sprained ankle (check status). On the season he is averaging 182 yards per game (55%) with a 5-5 ratio. RB Simpson missed last week with a neck injury but is expected to play here. Georgia Tech has a large offensive edge (#6-93) but the Cavs have the defensive edge (#24-55). QB Nesbitt is averaging 128 yards per game (48%) with a 4-3 ratio, but is #3 in the ACC with 625 rush yards (4.1). WR Thomas is #1 in the ACC with 27 receptions (24.9) despite Georgia Tech’s offensive scheme (just 1 completion last week). Georgia Tech is coming off a huge upset win over #4 Virginia Tech (first home win over Top 5 team S/’62) and Virginia has won 12 of their last 13 in Oct.
PHIL’S FORECAST: Virginia 26 Georgia Tech 23
The Jackets kicked VA’s arse! 34-9!!

Look, Steele is extremly accurate, about 90% last year on AP Top 10, but yes, 10%, he misses.
90% chance he’s right about Georgia.

Richt is 39-3 when he gets a 100 yard rusher.
Both Alabama and Florida win their divisions by averaging over 200 yards a game rushing.
Georgia averages over 240 a game over last 5 games, has the O-Line with the most experience in the NCAA at 155 starts.
Georgia wins SEC East, running all the way.

Georgia’s last 5 games rushing:
Tenn Tech 304
Auburn 169 (Bama got 151)
Kent 196 (bama got 133 against Kent)
Ga Tech 339
Tex A/M 208
That’s 1216 yards over last 5 games, good for 5th best in NCAA out of 120 teams.
243 yards rushing a game.

Phil Steele is the most accurate predictor in pre-seaon in college football. When he says, Georgia might go on a run, that’s as close to the turth as you can get.
http://preseason.stassen.com/prediction-accuracy/2009-10yr.html
Steele was most accurate over 10 year period, and 5 year period, and 2nd most accurate over 3 year period.

They won’t even get through September undefeated, much less beat a Florida team that has superior talent and coaching. And, they ALWAYS lose to someone they should not lose to (Remember Kentucky in ‘09, GT in ‘08, Tennessee and S. Carolina in ‘07). Also, you can laugh if you want to, but by November 27 they won’t even be the best team in the STATE. BTW – yes, Steele is fairly accurate, and do not forget he picked UGA what #17. That is closer to where they will finish with at least 4 losses.

Oh yeah, watch for the classic “trap” game on Oct. 23 @ Kentucky. They will be looking ahead to the annual Florida beatdown, and will get clawed by the Wildcats. Count on it. CMR will not have his team focused. Just like GT was last year when they played UGA. They were looking to Clemson and an ACC Championship, and they got beat. Oct. 23 go ahead and put it in the L column.

The #1 most accurate pre-season predictor said this about Georgia:
“If I was going to pick another one out of the stack there,” Steele said Friday on ESPN’s College Football Live, “I would have to say the Georgia Bulldogs. I think they’ve got a shot of even winning the SEC East and could very well run the table.”
Steele also raved about Georgia’s O-Line: 155 starts of experience, 243 yards a game overage rushing over last 5 games, only gave up 12 sacks.
I don’t think Steele thinks the rushing attack, defense & QB play will improve this year.
His lone concern was the defensive secondary.

One reason is due to GA’s comfy schedule this year. Who do they really play? A FL team that has lost most of its key players, TN with a new coach, and that’s really it. I don’t want you hear you dawg fans crying about your schedule this year. A half decent team would go 10-2 on it.

I agree, one game at a time… looking at the depth and as long as we stay focused the skies the limit.. and for those Gator and Bama fans, its not like we always ask for the publicity or hype it just is given from the media so of course as fans its exciting to hear.. plus Florida didn’t you guys lose you’re Defensive Coordinator and pretty much you’re entire squad including the messiah himself Tebow?… plus you Gators finally have a competetive schedule this year and play some decent out of conference games so you will lose at least 3 games… so in my eyes for everyone to say Florida will run the table is a huge load of hype

The Dogs need to play wiht CON FI DENCE in 2010.
CON FI DENCE = SCORING MARGIN
Does Richt have the killer instinct that’s willing to run up the score to give our guys a good margin for error as a buffer zone against penalties, turnovers, and bad calls, or wis he just too nice of a guy?
Can Georgia DOMINATE TEAMS in the 1st Quarter, setting the tone, and in the 1st 3 games, sending a message to the rest of the league? Can Richt leanr how to break down the will of his opponent by blowing them out?

2010 is the year of the Dawg—mark it down. These dawgs are loaded—Richt’s keeping it quiet. UGA may win it all—Richt’s recruiting finally pays off big. Florida’s run is over. GA takes over the series, starting this year.

Gino’s secret at UCONN is scoring margin. He tries to blow opponents out, take away their will, and they’re easy to defeat. He tells his players they need to keep scoring, to give their best possible effort, regardless of how many points you’re up by, keep scoring.
That’s how you go on a run and don’t lose games for several years.
Scoring margin.

Lindy’s ranks UGA #22, has little positive to say other than a veteran line, kickers, and AJ, and says it will be an 8 game season. I think a lot of folks are underestimating some of the other players on the team. If I were a UGA player, I would be highly insulted. I guess we will find out if they are man enough.

You better start thinking how your going to beat Kentucky, who put a whomping on you last year at home instead of thinking going undefeated
qb goes down you will be lucky to go 6-6 or 7-5.
