Georgia-Florida contract draft gives schools right to sell game’s name

Georgia and Florida would have expanded opportunities to market their annual football game, including the right to sell the name of the game to a corporate sponsor, under terms of a contract still being hammered out with the city of Jacksonville.

The schools decided last fall to keep the game in Jacksonville through 2016, and a formal contract has been in the works for months. Although it  hasn’t been finalized, the most recent draft of  a proposed contract was obtained today by the AJC under Georgia’s Open Records Act.

One reason the contract has taken so long to complete is that it covers a wide range of potential marketing rights not addressed in previous deals between the schools and Jacksonville.

According to the latest draft, dated May 21, the schools “shall exclusively own and control all worldwide rights for promotion, marketing, sponsorships, merchandising and ancillary events . . . including without limitation the rights to enter into a title sponsorship agreement for each … game.”

Georgia associate athletics director of external operations Alan Thomas said this morning that the schools don’t currently have any plans to sell naming rights to the game, but wanted their control of the issue clearly stated in such a long-term contract.

“It would be an option, but not an option we have explored at all in my six years here,” Thomas said.  “But if that comes up, we want the ability for the schools to control that. . . . Because it’s mentioned [in the contract] doesn’t mean it’s being contemplated or negotiated.”

The previous deal between the schools and Jacksonville covers this year’s game, but the new contract, when signed, would replace the final year of the old deal and run six additional seasons. Georgia executive associate athletics director Frank Crumley expects the contract to be signed this summer.  “We’re moving along very nicely,” he said recently. “We’ve got every hurdle worked out.”

The 45-page draft contains many provisions previously reported about the proposed deal, including Jacksonville’s offer to pay for the cost to fly Georgia’s team directly from Athens to St. Augustine on the day before the game and from Jacksonville to Athens afterward. Georgia athletics director Damon Evans had pushed for that provision in an attempt to level the logistical playing field.

According to the latest draft, Jacksonville would reimburse UGA for the cost of travel on three 50-passenger jets, up to a maximum of $300,000 this year and increasing 10 percent each year thereafter. That payment is in addition to $50,000 Jacksonville would pay each school to offset costs of lodging, meals and buses.

The draft also stipulates that the Greater Jacksonville Agricultural Fair cannot be held the same weekend as the game.  Both were held on the same weekend in 2008, creating traffic and parking problems.

The Georgia-Florida game has been played in Jacksonville all but two years since 1933, and the city, according to the contract draft, would have “a right of first negotiation” to attempt to keep the game beyond 2016.

You can play the game anywhere you want, as long as the tickets are split up 50/50 its a neutral sight. Florida gets no advantage from the game being in Jacksonville.

Although I really like the history of the annual game in Jacksonville, I do feel that the gators have an advantage due to location. I would really like to see the game played in Jax this year and then Atlanta next year. That would be the fairest scenario for both schools. How could you argue then who has the advantage?

Everything has it’s day. Maybe at one time the GA. — FLA. game in Florida, 60 to 80 mile from Gainesville made since. When most UGA fans were hoping for 6 or 7 wins a year and might get a bowl game. To showcase both schools and their legion of fans that would fill up a lot of stadiums, no matter where the game is played. But FLA. grew up 1st with Spurrier and UGA after they won the national title in 1980 started thinking they could compete on a national level. The main reason CMR was hired 10 years ago was his working at Florida State, who was already on a national level. UGA use to be play for an SEC title now UGA wants a national title which will take care of the SEC thing. Many years ago having the game in Jacksonville made since financially and showcase wise, thying to get a bowl game. But for many years now and in the future not having the GA-FLA. game in Athens and Gainesville makes no since money wise or any other way. We don’t need Jacksonville to showcase UGA.

The series record really only makes any difference to me for the years that I’ve been on the planet!

If you are truly a UGA student, then during YOUR entire lifetime, UF has OWNED UGA. If you are taking solace in the overall series history, have a great time watching the 1933 baseball all-star game this weekend. It was a doozy, I think Babe Ruth’s last one

A corporate sponsor for a single regular season game that most of the country doesnt care about? College Football is turning into a pretty weird little game. Whats next? A trophy for the winner? Name it each year after the winner of the matchup!! Make the losers wear pink jerseys each year.

This year the Dawgs will wear their mystical black helmets with black jerseys and knock the slobber out of the Gators AGAIN. Since 1987, the Gators have had four winning streaks and the Dawgs have had four winning streaks. It’s a 4-4 tie in the official recordbooks.

Last year’s loss (and MANY others in the series) was due to the poor officiating. The game is conveniently played in Florida every year. Why??? But this year we will get a new winning streak started. We’ll stamp that Gator on the field once again!

Georgia is the SEC regional (State of Georgia) champion!!

If there was a true National Champion with a playoff system, UGA would have won the fake Championships the Gators now claim. Championships are won on the field not on the compoter.

While you non-donating losers are sitting at home, us true supporters get to deal with homeless drunks trying to light their stubs on our grilles. We already are forced to tailgate there every other year when we go to the mugging capital of the world, the GaTech “campus”. Grow up, get a real job, and go to the game in Jax. Its 50/50 in the stands. Do you think the players know if the game is 25 miles south of the Ga border? Do you think they care? Newsflash….Jax is FUN! Some of you posters are really pathetic. You have never been to a GA – FL game yet you want to move the game. You continually push this. Understand, since 1933 this game has been in Jax. It is a tradition. I have been to many of these games, and I never considered the idea that FL has an advantage. We used to beat them fairly regularly in the 60,s, 70,s, and 80,s. It hasn’t been too equitable since then, but it will change some day.
It is a great atmosphere at the landing on the night before the game, and for the weekend as a whole. If you want to go, get up off your pocketbook and get tickets at some price. The Dome would not have the same atmosphere or as large a crowd. If it ever moves, home and home would be more beneficial financially, every other year.
The Gators have been crowing for awhile, but it will change one day. “UGA still holds the series advantage.
As for all you Techie nerds that post on here and every other UGA blog, you are recognizable as is your writing. Go home, or at least, far away – for good, little kids.
For you Gators, enjoy it while you can. It will change.

Spurrier was successful because he made his team focus throughout the importance of beating UGA

It has nothing to do with where the game is played

If it did we would not have lost by 40 when they came to Athens

Until our football team has a coaching staff that cares about beating FL then we will win again

I am a die hard Dawg fan. Have been all my life. All this BS about the game needing to be in Atlanta to be nuetral and the gators having an unfair advantage is just that, BS. When GA was dominating this series before FL’s current domination, we sure as hell were not crying and making excuses then. Instead of making excuses for getting outcoached and outplayed, what GA needs to do is start kicking FL’s ass. Then Jacksonville will be nice trip again.

It don’t make a damn whether the game is in Athens or Gainesville, if ticket distribution is 50/50, then it is nuetral. What makes it unnuetral is when so called “loyal” and “diehard” dawg fans go on ebay and sell their tickets to FL fans. Nothing is more disgusting than sitting on the GA side and looking around you and seeing a bunch of that nauseating orange and blue in your section. No wonder the team lets FL get in their head, the fans have giving up on them before the trip to Jacksonville is made.

I know someone who played under Dooly and he told me before the FL game Dooly was ruthless with the players sometimes degrading them to get them so angry and fired up they couldnt wait to go play them

Once again, we can see how the SEC is big boy ball. I think it is smart to add a sponsor. That means more money for the two schools every year. This is a no brainer.

UGA needs to regain their competitiive stance vs Florida over the next 4 or 5 years, with two Ws under our belt already in the last 6? years, plus 2 or 3 more, it could RE develop into a powerhouse rivarly.

Keep in mind all programs are on hard times BUT the Athletic Fund just dropped some major dough $$ on UGA.

Back in 1989 and before then, UGA ate the gators lunch and took their women 17 out of the last 20 years then. But then as Dawg Whisperer posted “Dawg fans get to count all the series wins, Gator fans only count those they choose!”
Well said Dawg Whisperer. gator fans only remember what they want to remember. No sense in arguing with them, as much like the lizards they follow, their brain capacity is equivilant to the size of a lima bean. gators fail to except the truth before 1990, as they think football was not even invented until 1990.

I agree, Richt does act like its another game. Spurrier wanted to beat UGA so bad b/c Georgia beat Florida when Spurrier played. Now, Florida has no rivals b/c nobody can touch them.

If we put an energy(hatred, desire, passion) into beating Florida, maybe we would. I’m thinking of the kind of hatred Tech has for Georgia. All year long, Tech focuses on Georgia.

It should be called “Richt needs a pay-cut if he can’t beat Florida” bowl

I love the Jax atmosphere and it is a great place for a rivalry game. It has not been exactly neutral but they are working to fix that to a degree. Give them some kudos. What it all boils down to is the 60 minutes on the field and no contract or changing locations is going to change that. The Dawgs whipped FL’s azz many times on the same field in less than neutral conditions and will do it again. It’s the players, it’s the coaching, it’s the game, all else is of no consequence.

Obviously many of you have never attended the Florida-Georgia game. The stadium is split in half, so there are no more Gators there than Dogs. No advantage there. Same with the tailgating and RV city set up. You don’t realize the money both schools make off this annual game. It is to the advantage of both schools to continue, we are talking over a million for each school for one game. It’s funny I grew up in Jacksonville and all those years the Dawgs dominated Florida the subject of moving the game never came up once.

It is funny that Georgia fans talk about Florida wearing jean shorts and being redneck. How do you think the rest of the country sees the two states? I know they think of Hawaiian shirts and tanned bikini girls in Florida and tobacco fields and clay roads in Georgia. I know this because so many people I know here are from somewhere else. Come up with something better than the jean shorts joke, it’s so stupid, considering the melting pot that the state of Florida is and the conservative rural landscape of Georgia.

Shieldy,

Being a Jaguar fan also and attending every Jaguar game, I can tell you that all Jaguar fans are not gator fans. In fact, many Jaguar fans commute from GA to Jax for the Jag games. Anyway, what I was going to point out is that if the suite holders at the GA/FL game are anything like they are at a Jag game, they are too damn snoody to cheer and hollar. If I am correct though, GA gets use of some of those suites. I can’t imagine Michael Adams and high dollar friends sitting in the heat or cold. GA has many high rollers that can afford suites.

I love CMR, he is a great person and good leader for impressionable young men. I also believe he is a damn good coach. BUT, he needs to put duct tape on his nads and rip it off before games. Threaten Icy Hot in jock straps for each player that misses or makes a turnover, misses a tackle, or gets flagged for an idiotic penalty. If we have to change uniform colors before games to get motivated than we should just forfeit.

Not being from GA or even playing at GA, I do not think he truly understands how BIG the rivalry is with FL. Tech may be a rivalry, but it is not the one that keeps us from winning SEC titles and chances at National Championships. It also is a nut buster in recruiting. The passion to beat FL comes from the heart, not uniform color.

The Gator’s were’nt always better bu they owned you in the ’90s and ’00s and probably will in the ’10s.

Right now the ‘Gator’s own the Dawgs like it or not.

Then the series will be even and it will be a real rivalry again.

“Jacksonville isn’t a neutral site” Cry me a river, Dawg fans! Tickets and fan representation is always 50/50. Don’t act like this is a home game for Florida. I got an idea…instead of crying like a bunch of sore losers, why don’t UGA fans take some accountability for their team’s failures? Stop displacing blame on anything but the team and its head ball coach and come to terms with the fact that Florida is just superior to Georgia. It’s unhealthy to continue living your life in denial. Just accept it and move on…
