It won’t surprise anyone that Florida was the most successful sports program in the SEC during the 2009-10 school year, but it might surprise some that Georgia was the second most successful.
Florida is the runaway winner of the SEC All-Sports Trophy, while Georgia — despite disappointing seasons in football and several other sports — is the runner-up, solidly ahead of third-place Tennessee.
The annual award is based on a points system tied to each school’s SEC finish in each sport, men’s and women’s. Schools get 12 points for a first-place finish, 11 for a second-place finish, etc. A school’s cumulative point total is divided by the number of teams it fields. The award is coordinated and presented by the New York Times Regional Media Group, which includes 14 newspapers in the Southeast.
Florida had a total of 163 points, or an average of 10.19 per team, for this school year . Georgia had 133 points, or 8.31 per team. Here are the full standings:
2009-2010 SEC ALL-SPORTS STANDINGS
(Includes men’s and women’s teams)
School Points Teams Avg. per team
1. Florida 163 16 10.19
2. Georgia 133 16 8.31
3. Tennessee 115.5 15 7.70
4. LSU 120.5 16 7.53
5. Auburn 111.5 16 6.97
6. Ole Miss 86.5 13 6.65
7. Arkansas 96 15 6.40
8. Alabama 101.5 16 6.34
9. Kentucky 94.5 16 5.91
10. Vanderbilt 68.5 12 5.71
11.South Carolina 82.5 15 5.50
12. Mississippi State 44 13 3.38
(Note: Indoor and outdoor track and field and cross-country are combined.)
In addition to the overall trophy, separate awards are given to the conference’s top-performing school(s) in men’s sports and women’s sports. Florida won both of those trophies, too.
The Gators’ men’s teams averaged 10.79 points, far ahead of second-place Mississippi’s 7.92. Auburn finished third among the men’s teams (7.36), with Georgia and Tennessee tying for fourth (7.14).
On the women’s side, Florida’s teams averaged 9.72 points, while Georgia was second at 9.22.

Good thing UGA has a NATIONAL CHAMPION equestrian team and a kick ass gymnastics team to carry the program.
How did UGA do against the rest of the SEC in the popular sports: football, basketball, womans basketball, baseball. Well. Tennessee dominated UGA in each of these – and now has beaten UGA in thier mainstay sport – MENS TENNIS!
I will say this – womans basketball – Andy Landers does field very respectable teams year in and year out – UT is fortunate that we have Coach PAT!!

VolsRule- You dominated us in basketball? Check again. I seem to remember a certain Vols basketball team coming into Athens and losing 78-63. Now THAT’S domination. And say what you will about football now because it’s about to get ugly in Knoxville this year. I see the Vols going 5-7 at best.

Let’s face it. Athletes are more attracted to nice weather and good looking people. USC, Texas, and Florida have both of them. UGA has a nice campus and in a classic city but it’s no LA or Austin. I think what will turn things around is another NC in football and being competitive in basketball. I hope both will come soon.

Actually, 2nd Place is the last loser and not the first loser depending on the type of competition. In a horse race, maybe 2nd is the first loser but in, say, the NFL playoffs the first round teams that lose, are the first losers.

Georgia graduates should care how all of the teams at the University perform. Football is different in many ways, it pays for most other sports, but it’s also the only sport for which their is no national championship. The NCAA doesn’t host or recognize a national champion.
What this list speaks to is the unbelievable level of accomplishment at UGA even in a what would be considered a down year in Athens. Georgia is routinely a top five team in men’s tennis, women’s tennis, men’s golf, women’s golf, men’s and women’s swimming & diving, equestrian, gymnastics, women’s softball, women’s basketball. They are one of only two teams in the SEC to have won the college world series, and they are two bad innings from having won it twice. Georgia has won the SEC Championship in football, a real championship, 12 times, 3rd most in the league, one less than Tennessee and like the rest of the league, many less than Alabama’s 22. And though Georgia’s men’s basketball team has been suppar…….they have at least been to the final four which over half the SEC has not.

for those wanting the headline to be about UF….it’s the ATLANTA JOURNAL CONSTITUTION, not the Orlando/Tampa/etc. paper. I hate that my Dawgs struggled mightily in the “Big 3″ sports, but geez, we had the worst baseball team in the SEC and one of the worst in school history, we had a bad year in football at 8-5 (which still extended the nation’s longest active streak of 8-win seasons at 13), and we are still digging out of the hole in men’s basketball (still beat UF, UT, and Tech). There is much underachieving going on in the UGA athletic program, and Damon Evans needs to continue to weed this out…..but we STILL have the #2 overall athletic program in the SEC?!?! Yeah, UF should be great with all the $$$$, population, and lure of being in a tourist state surrounded by water. However, it’s interesting to see UGA sitting there at #2 with such underachieving going on right now. I mean, UGA took a step BACK in oft-mentioned women’s gymnastics, women’s tennis, and even men’s tennis was in a down year within the conference before the big run at NCAAs. All in all, with so much room for improvement moving forward, I think it’s amazing we finished #2. Go Dawgs!

Equestrian doesn’t count in the formula yet because there aren’t enough NCAA sanctioned schools competing yet. Too bad — because the Dawgs have dominated the sport the last five years. Every year more and more programs reach the varsity level in equestrian — those will be NCAA national championships. Congrats to the equestrian team for winning five national varsity equestrian cahmpionships — beating the likes of South Carolina and Auburn along the way to do it. I see some future gold medal olympians coming out of that group.

A Belated National Championship For Auburn?
In the case of the BCS, they have two simple options: force USC to vacate the title and not have a 2004 champion or award the title to either Auburn or Oklahoma. How likely is the BCS to pick a new champion? I’d put it somewhere between slim and none. USC will almost surely be forced to vacate, but a new champion will not be crowned.
The Associate Press is an entirely different story.
Many believe the writers will crown a new champion. ESPN analysts Craig James and Ed Cunningham clearly favor giving the title to Auburn. An undefeated season in the SEC coupled with the throttling Oklahoma took from USC in the championship game, makes it a no brainer – at least according to those two.
James believes it’s quite possible the AP will crown Auburn champions. “In my mind, if USC is stripped of the title, Auburn becomes the national champion,” said James. “For what Auburn did that season, I have always thought it was an injustice.”
Asked whether fans in Auburn should celebrate such an occurrence, Cunningham said, “Absolutely. There will be toilet paper everywhere at Toomer’s Corner.”
I couldn’t agree more.
Just curious

Could Auburn be on the verge of a national title? Say the NCAA hammers USC, and the BCS and the AP take away the national titles they awarded the Trojans and their semi-pro tailback, Reggie Bush. Say the BCS revisits its policy on the subject and the AP re-votes, and one or both of those organizations decides to correct the greatest injustice of the BCS era by crowning, as the rightful champs, the Auburn Tigers. What should Auburn do six years later? Please. That’s easy. Accept it. Celebrate it. And never, ever apologize for it.

2nd is same as last? So Jim Furyk, who is second in PGA with winnings of $2,588,070 is same as D.J Trahan with winnings of $815,509? In Sprint Cup racing Jimmie Johnson is 2nd with winnings of $2,689,300, while Martin Truex iw 25th at $1,422,500. When put in this perspective, second sound pretty darn good to me.

I believe that the SEC All Sports Trophy is really more of a reflection of where your overall athletic program is at compared to your peers rather than to be looked at as a final score at a ballgame. So I’ll just say congrats to the University of Georgia program for a job well done as they compare extremely favorably in the conference as a whole. It IS hard to compete with the jaggernaut program that Jeremy Foley and his staff have built in Gainesville, but being second “in your class” ain’t too bad either. I think UGA did a good job.

In September, all SEC Schools will start out with zero points. Good luck to everyone in the SEC.
It would be great to see USC get stripped of the football championship for 2004 and have it given to Auburn, but it will only be an asterisk which is too bad.

My take, regardless of the results, is more of a tabulation/rules nature. As I read it, a school’s finish within the coference standings alone for a sport is what is counted. However, shouldn’t a school’s performance in postseason also carry weight? For example, if KY finishes second in the conference, but wins the overall national title shouldn’t they win extra points? Same could be said for the GymDawgs, Bama football, LSU track, etc. If you win a national title extra creedance should be given, IMHO. And what about those sports who’s national titles haven’t even been decided yet such as softball, baseball, tennis, track & field, and golf? If an SEC squad wins a national title in one of these sports shouldn’t they be awarded extra points? What would it cost to hold off until the final out at Omaha is made by a possible SEC baseball team contending for a national title– two or three weeks? Not very long in the grand scheme of things. Anyway, congrats under the current system to Florida.

Why is this news? It is like this every year.
The Gators blew away the field thanks to seven SEC titles and a strong performance by its men’s programs to win the SEC All-Sports trophy for the 20th time.
It was the 10th sweep for the Gator athletics program. UF is the only school to collect all three titles in a single season.
Florida has won 20 of the last 23 All-Sports awards.

ALL I can say to Tennessee fans is Kiffin treated your program like it deserves to be treated as second rate. To florida fans your head coach fakes MI’s and wishes he was at a school with real football tradition at ND. To Alabama, you owe it all to SABAN and when he leaves for a better job you will be back to nothing but 6 wins a year. TO Auburn you have and always play the second favorite to Alabama in Alabama.

I don’t understand. UGa basketball team sucked royally, I mean they were bad (losing record; real bad conference record. Our baseball sucked worse than anybody. Neither teams were even close to making it to national tourneys. Worse we’ve ever had. And we are the 2d best sports school in the SEC. Go figure: SEC must really suck overall in sports. Maybe each team is good in one sport and sucks at the rest.

It must be a really slow day for Tim to post such meaningless stuff as this. How about posting some numbers on how many athletes at UGA graduated and what degrees they earned.
Now that we’re officially in the off-season, wouldn’t this be the perfect time to take an in-depth look at UGA and have a free-ranging discussion about the problems at UGA and why the arrest rate of players is the highest in the country? it’s common knowledge that UGA is a party school, but have any football players every actually graduated with a real degree? Jan Kemp exposed the school and the coaches almost three decades ago, but there is no sign that anything has improved; if anything, the arrest rate shows that things are getting more outrageous every year while Mark Richt – a decent fellow with no coaching skills – has no clue what to do.
UGA has become a major embarrassment to all Georgians, and we want some answers starting now.
