It won’t surprise anyone that Florida was the most successful sports program in the SEC during the 2009-10 school year, but it might surprise some that Georgia was the second most successful.
Florida is the runaway winner of the SEC All-Sports Trophy, while Georgia — despite disappointing seasons in football and several other sports — is the runner-up, solidly ahead of third-place Tennessee.
The annual award is based on a points system tied to each school’s SEC finish in each sport, men’s and women’s. Schools get 12 points for a first-place finish, 11 for a second-place finish, etc. A school’s cumulative point total is divided by the number of teams it fields. The award is coordinated and presented by the New York Times Regional Media Group, which includes 14 newspapers in the Southeast.
Florida had a total of 163 points, or an average of 10.19 per team, for this school year . Georgia had 133 points, or 8.31 per team. Here are the full standings:
2009-2010 SEC ALL-SPORTS STANDINGS
(Includes men’s and women’s teams)
School Points Teams Avg. per team
1. Florida 163 16 10.19
2. Georgia 133 16 8.31
3. Tennessee 115.5 15 7.70
4. LSU 120.5 16 7.53
5. Auburn 111.5 16 6.97
6. Ole Miss 86.5 13 6.65
7. Arkansas 96 15 6.40
8. Alabama 101.5 16 6.34
9. Kentucky 94.5 16 5.91
10. Vanderbilt 68.5 12 5.71
11.South Carolina 82.5 15 5.50
12. Mississippi State 44 13 3.38
(Note: Indoor and outdoor track and field and cross-country are combined.)
In addition to the overall trophy, separate awards are given to the conference’s top-performing school(s) in men’s sports and women’s sports. Florida won both of those trophies, too.
The Gators’ men’s teams averaged 10.79 points, far ahead of second-place Mississippi’s 7.92. Auburn finished third among the men’s teams (7.36), with Georgia and Tennessee tying for fourth (7.14).
On the women’s side, Florida’s teams averaged 9.72 points, while Georgia was second at 9.22.

When I think football dominance, I think UGA not Florida. That’s what the Nation thinks too. Why do we play Florida every year? Couldn’t we replace them with Ole Miss or somebody like that? We’re so tired of beating them each year. Flood the end zone with Bulldawgs after the score, we run Florida too. My cousin went to UGA. He has a Florida fan working for him. That has to be tough. Go Dawgs and CMR!!

The SEC should worry about UF leaving the SEC and going to the Big Ten. UF is clearly the cream of the crop in the SEC.

Who cares? The sec is good at one sport – football. If you want to compare schools that are actually good at multiple, look no farther than the University of Texas.

National championship is a popularity contest pushed by the talking heads at ESPN. Look back at some of the past champions. Were they really the best team in the country?
We will never know until we get a playoff.

for those wanting the headline to be about UF….it’s the ATLANTA JOURNAL CONSTITUTION, not the Orlando/Tampa/etc. paper. I hate that my Dawgs struggled mightily in the “Big 3″ sports, but geez, we had the worst baseball team in the SEC and one of the worst in school history, we had a bad year in football at 8-5 (which still extended the nation’s longest active streak of 8-win seasons at 13), and we are still digging out of the hole in men’s basketball (still beat UF, UT, and Tech). There is much underachieving going on in the UGA athletic program, and Damon Evans needs to continue to weed this out…..but we STILL have the #2 overall athletic program in the SEC?!?! Yeah, UF should be great with all the $$$$, population, and lure of being in a tourist state surrounded by water. However, it’s interesting to see UGA sitting there at #2 with such underachieving going on right now. I mean, UGA took a step BACK in oft-mentioned women’s gymnastics, women’s tennis, and even men’s tennis was in a down year within the conference before the big run at NCAAs. All in all, with so much room for improvement moving forward, I think it’s amazing we finished #2. Go Dawgs!

Those of us that matriculated at UGA, having embarked on our resulting post grad careers, love seeing more good news about UGA. The equine NC was just as exciting, as would be the football NC, if we were to ever win one.
The opinion of the alumni, is where the rubber meets the road and we grads are very happy with UGA all the way around. Fans can express their thoughts, but unless thet paid $$ to play ……….their opinions matter not.

Equestrian doesn’t count in the formula yet because there aren’t enough NCAA sanctioned schools competing yet. Too bad — because the Dawgs have dominated the sport the last five years. Every year more and more programs reach the varsity level in equestrian — those will be NCAA national championships. Congrats to the equestrian team for winning five national varsity equestrian cahmpionships — beating the likes of South Carolina and Auburn along the way to do it. I see some future gold medal olympians coming out of that group.

Football? 10-10 sec east record last 4 years!
Mens Basketball – win 5 SEC games and that causes excitement? (i guess so after the last few years of futility!)
Baseball? – After choking against Fresno State – UGA has sunk to an HISTORIC LOW! What is the conference record this year?
Again – good thing UGA has a good womans soccer team, a good womans softball team, a good womans equestrian team, and a decent womans basketball team – and a good womans swim team.
The woman are carrying the men’s teams jocks at UGA!

Agree – Football will bottom out at UT this year – but it’s going to be great to see Dooley build this program – and I can’t wait to root for these future teams – win or lose.
As for Kiffin – SEC EAST record 4-1
As for Richt – SEC East record 2-3
Tell me who had the better staff?

A Belated National Championship For Auburn?
In the case of the BCS, they have two simple options: force USC to vacate the title and not have a 2004 champion or award the title to either Auburn or Oklahoma. How likely is the BCS to pick a new champion? I’d put it somewhere between slim and none. USC will almost surely be forced to vacate, but a new champion will not be crowned.
The Associate Press is an entirely different story.
Many believe the writers will crown a new champion. ESPN analysts Craig James and Ed Cunningham clearly favor giving the title to Auburn. An undefeated season in the SEC coupled with the throttling Oklahoma took from USC in the championship game, makes it a no brainer – at least according to those two.
James believes it’s quite possible the AP will crown Auburn champions. “In my mind, if USC is stripped of the title, Auburn becomes the national champion,” said James. “For what Auburn did that season, I have always thought it was an injustice.”
Asked whether fans in Auburn should celebrate such an occurrence, Cunningham said, “Absolutely. There will be toilet paper everywhere at Toomer’s Corner.”
I couldn’t agree more.
Just curious

Could Auburn be on the verge of a national title? Say the NCAA hammers USC, and the BCS and the AP take away the national titles they awarded the Trojans and their semi-pro tailback, Reggie Bush. Say the BCS revisits its policy on the subject and the AP re-votes, and one or both of those organizations decides to correct the greatest injustice of the BCS era by crowning, as the rightful champs, the Auburn Tigers. What should Auburn do six years later? Please. That’s easy. Accept it. Celebrate it. And never, ever apologize for it.
