It won’t surprise anyone that Florida was the most successful sports program in the SEC during the 2009-10 school year, but it might surprise some that Georgia was the second most successful.
Florida is the runaway winner of the SEC All-Sports Trophy, while Georgia — despite disappointing seasons in football and several other sports — is the runner-up, solidly ahead of third-place Tennessee.
The annual award is based on a points system tied to each school’s SEC finish in each sport, men’s and women’s. Schools get 12 points for a first-place finish, 11 for a second-place finish, etc. A school’s cumulative point total is divided by the number of teams it fields. The award is coordinated and presented by the New York Times Regional Media Group, which includes 14 newspapers in the Southeast.
Florida had a total of 163 points, or an average of 10.19 per team, for this school year . Georgia had 133 points, or 8.31 per team. Here are the full standings:
2009-2010 SEC ALL-SPORTS STANDINGS
(Includes men’s and women’s teams)
School Points Teams Avg. per team
1. Florida 163 16 10.19
2. Georgia 133 16 8.31
3. Tennessee 115.5 15 7.70
4. LSU 120.5 16 7.53
5. Auburn 111.5 16 6.97
6. Ole Miss 86.5 13 6.65
7. Arkansas 96 15 6.40
8. Alabama 101.5 16 6.34
9. Kentucky 94.5 16 5.91
10. Vanderbilt 68.5 12 5.71
11.South Carolina 82.5 15 5.50
12. Mississippi State 44 13 3.38
(Note: Indoor and outdoor track and field and cross-country are combined.)
In addition to the overall trophy, separate awards are given to the conference’s top-performing school(s) in men’s sports and women’s sports. Florida won both of those trophies, too.
The Gators’ men’s teams averaged 10.79 points, far ahead of second-place Mississippi’s 7.92. Auburn finished third among the men’s teams (7.36), with Georgia and Tennessee tying for fourth (7.14).
On the women’s side, Florida’s teams averaged 9.72 points, while Georgia was second at 9.22.

Tim, you should have used your original headline that read “UF No.1 in SEC all-sports standings.” Celebrating 2nd is no way to be the beat writer for UF at the AJC.

Tim, what would the numbers look like if the men’s basketball and baseball teams had an average season instead on the actual ones they had?

Good thing UGA has a NATIONAL CHAMPION equestrian team and a kick ass gymnastics team to carry the program.
How did UGA do against the rest of the SEC in the popular sports: football, basketball, womans basketball, baseball. Well. Tennessee dominated UGA in each of these – and now has beaten UGA in thier mainstay sport – MENS TENNIS!
I will say this – womans basketball – Andy Landers does field very respectable teams year in and year out – UT is fortunate that we have Coach PAT!!

VolsRule- You dominated us in basketball? Check again. I seem to remember a certain Vols basketball team coming into Athens and losing 78-63. Now THAT’S domination. And say what you will about football now because it’s about to get ugly in Knoxville this year. I see the Vols going 5-7 at best.

For years, Arkansas would have been much higher, possibly winning, these all sports contests if the did not combine the three track disciplines….

It is good to see Dawgs bashing VOLs so early in the moringing; after all Gators hate Vols much worse than the Dawgs.

Let’s face it. Athletes are more attracted to nice weather and good looking people. USC, Texas, and Florida have both of them. UGA has a nice campus and in a classic city but it’s no LA or Austin. I think what will turn things around is another NC in football and being competitive in basketball. I hope both will come soon.

Actually, 2nd Place is the last loser and not the first loser depending on the type of competition. In a horse race, maybe 2nd is the first loser but in, say, the NFL playoffs the first round teams that lose, are the first losers.
Just a thought.

Volsrule,
i bet you go into permanent hiding this fall after Richt hands D Dooley a first rate pounding. You think Richt is not competitive? Think Richt doesn’t know there are folks like that idiot bulldawg that want dooley in Athens? BTW, what is Richt’s overall record vs UT?
You have no offensive line and no QB and your best RB is gone. You are looking at 5-7 if you are lucky.
Maybe Pat won’t leave for a while so you can hang your hat on that.

What a lame headline. Celebrate the greatness that is UF AJC instead of the first losers. If you keep making these bullpups feel proud for being losers, they’ll never amount to anything. Your rag is like the lame parents who say it isn’t about winning, it about having fun. Well, I hope the doggies are having a lot of fun cuz they ain’t wining jack squat!

Georgia graduates should care how all of the teams at the University perform. Football is different in many ways, it pays for most other sports, but it’s also the only sport for which their is no national championship. The NCAA doesn’t host or recognize a national champion.
What this list speaks to is the unbelievable level of accomplishment at UGA even in a what would be considered a down year in Athens. Georgia is routinely a top five team in men’s tennis, women’s tennis, men’s golf, women’s golf, men’s and women’s swimming & diving, equestrian, gymnastics, women’s softball, women’s basketball. They are one of only two teams in the SEC to have won the college world series, and they are two bad innings from having won it twice. Georgia has won the SEC Championship in football, a real championship, 12 times, 3rd most in the league, one less than Tennessee and like the rest of the league, many less than Alabama’s 22. And though Georgia’s men’s basketball team has been suppar…….they have at least been to the final four which over half the SEC has not.

Maybe you should change your line to the “sport that counts since 1990″. LOL

UGA is also the SEC Football Champion for the Georgia Region!!! We run this state. We are state champions. Go CMR!! When you say “Georgia Bulldog”, every opponent trembles with fear because they know “We run this state”.” We are one major reason the SEC is feared like it is. We are a top 6 SEC football school. The SEC is the absolute best and we are in the top half. We beat Georgia Tech and they went to teh Orange Bowl. We are a better team than they are. Go SEC!
