Georgia wins NCAA softball regional, will host Super Regional (UPDATED)

For the third year in a row, Georgia’s softball team has reached the NCAA Super Regionals.

The Bulldogs (46-11) advanced by beating Radford 8-1 on Sunday afternoon in the championship game of the NCAA’s Athens regional at the UGA Softball Stadium.

Georgia will play California — winner of the Columbus (Ohio) regional –  in a best-of-three Super Regional series in Athens next weekend.  Game 1 will be played Friday at 2 p.m., Game 2 Saturday at noon and Game 3, if necessary, Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

California beat Ohio State 7-0 on Sunday to win the Columbus regional.

Sixteen teams advanced to the Super Regionals, with series being played at eight sites around the country. The eight winners will move on to the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City.

Georgia is the No. 6 national seed and California the No. 11 seed.

Georgia swept through this past weekend’s regional play, beating Elton 10-4 on Friday, Florida State 5-2 on Saturday and Radford 8-1 on Sunday. Similarly, California went 3-0 in the Columbus Regional.

Against Radford, Georgia’s Megan Wiggins went 3-for-4 with three RBI and Brianna Hesson 2-for-4 with two RBI. Sarah McCloud allowed one run on seven hits through five innings and struck out a season-high seven. She won all three of Georgia’s games in the regional.

North Georgia Softball hosted and won the Division 2 Super Regionals in Dahlonega this weekend. North Georgia is the only collegiate team in any division that is undefeated. The Saints are currently 50 – 0 and are ranked #1 in the country. They open play at the College World Series this Thursday in Missouri. The Saints are comprised of mainly metro Atlanta players. Best of luck to the Saints in their quest for a national title!

Valdosta State’s Lady Blazers qualified for the D-II World Series, too. Those of us who live in the nothingness around Valdosta are very proud of them.

Why is it that the AJ-C has NO STORY on Georgia tek’s softball team ?

Becasue they LOST, are eliminated, and their season is OVER 4-3 Sunday losing to a lousy Oregon team.

Thanks to the vocab-challenged leg-humper. If the AJC wont even print anything about the Tech women’s loss, at least we can get the news from these marginally literate posters.
Thanks, mutts! You are good for something after all.
What a combo – the mutts and the AJC! The worst of both worlds…and both right there in GA.
