Georgia dominates Oklahoma to reach tennis Final Four (UPDATED)

ATHENS –- By Georgia’s lofty tennis standards, this was something of an off season –  a 17-7 regular-season record and a No. 11 seed in the NCAA tournament. But look at the Bulldogs now, right back where they so often are at this time of year.

Georgia dominated Oklahoma 4-0 Sunday in an NCAA men’s quarterfinal match at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex to reach the national semifinals for the fourth time in the past five seasons.

“I’d been telling these guys — and they were probably a little bit tired of me saying it — that we hadn’t played our best yet,” Georgia coach Manuel Diaz said.  “I knew our best tennis was still ahead of us. And they’re proving me right.”

The Bulldogs (21-7) will play Tennessee (30-1) at 5 p.m. Monday for a berth in Tuesday’s national championship match. Tennessee defeated Baylor 4-0 in a Sunday quarterfinal.

In Monday’s other men’s semifinal, No. 1 seed Virginia (30-1) will play defending champion USC (23-3) at 4 p.m. Virginia defeated UCLA 4-2 and USC blanked Ohio State 4-0 on Sunday.

The women’s semifinals, also Monday, will match Florida (28-2) vs. North Carolina (30-4) at 1 p.m. and Stanford (24-1) vs. Notre Dame (27-3) at 2 p.m.

Oklahoma’s men, coached by former Georgia All-American player John Roddick, pulled off a big upset Friday by beating No. 3 seed Texas. But the Sooners (19-8) were no match for the Bulldogs, who thrived before a loud, lively crowd of 2,410, almost all of them UGA fans.

Georgia won the doubles point for a 1-0 lead, then took firm command by claiming the first set on five of the six singles courts.  A quick 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles by Drake Bernstein gave Georgia a 2-0 lead and was followed by a sharp 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles by Jamie Hunt and a clinching 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 1 by Javier Garrapiz, who prevailed on his sixth match point of the final game.

“I’ve got to think they’re playing about as well as they can play,” Roddick said of the Bulldogs.  “If they keep playing like that, they can do some great things here.”

Now the Dogs move on to face a Tennessee team that beat them 6-1 in Knoxville on April 17.

“Tennessee is a great team, but we’re going to come ready to play,” Hunt said. “I told the guys that with this crowd I feel unbeatable. Our team feels unbeatable with that kind of crowd support. We’re just playing very, very inspired tennis.”

The crowd made an impression on Roddick, who played for the Bulldogs from 1995-98.

“I guess when you’re wearing the red and black, you don’t notice how loud it is until you’re hearing them cheer against you,” Roddick said. “It was louder than I remembered.”

Georgia has won six NCAA championships in men’s tennis –- all since 1985, four since 1999 and two in the past three seasons.

“I’m just pleased that we are in the Final Four again,” Diaz said. “It’s no secret that we might not be the deepest, most talented team in the country this year.”

Vols will take this one as well…..
We typcially are the better football program – most recently going to the SEC East and have blown out UGA 3 of last 4 years.
Our men’s basketball program is much better
Our womans basketball program frigging owns Andy Landers
Track & Field – yes – we are much stronger than UGA.
Even our baseball program is now better.

Now – our mens tennis team is much better – which is what UGA hangs there hat on – cetainly not football or basketball.

I guess UGA better hope that Tennessee does not start a womans gymnastic team or an equestrian team – we would soon own you in that too.

Hope Damon Evans stays at UGA for a long, long time!!!!

there? I guess UGA has spelling. We will give you basketball and track, but definitely nothing else. If UT wins tomorrow, you can claim dominance no more than Landers could if he happened to win one year. You still have to wear that hideous color and pretend UT is a legitimate school.

No doubt UT is the better team. UGA has lost convincingly to all of the other semifinalists during the course of the regular season. I hope the Dawgs can make it a competitive match, but I’m shocked they’ve made it this far. Bo Seal’s dismissal in the middle of the year put a huge hole in the lineup. The guys UGA is playing at #6 singles don’t even have a chance. If the Dawgs can somehow pull out the doubles point, things could get interesting but UT is 30-1 and the #2 national seed for a reason. Either way, good run by the Dawgs considering they were a #11 seed….and, based on regular season performance, getting a seed that high was a gift from the NCAA because UGA is hosting this event.

What happened to UT football in the years prior to the ones you mention, Vols Rule? Probably prefer not to talk about them, huh?
As for basketball, better get’em while you can, because in a couple of years, you won’t be able to on the mens side.
So you have a tennis team for a change! Next year maybe try golf, or as you said, gymnastics and equestrian.
Then there’s that wonderful, big time coach your wonderful AD hired a couple of year’s ago that lasted a season because it was such a wonderful opportunity and school.

Do you honestly believe that we have 57 players on today’s roster that compares to these here when Coach Richt came here 10 years ago now today ? Does the 2006 roster look better than this ? Does the 2007 roster look better than this ? Does the 2008 roster look better than this ? Does the 2009 roster look better than this ? Does the 2010 roster look better than this. Given the worst recruiting class ever in the Coach Richt Era just now for 2010, by all accounts, and with 14 seniors and 5 juniors all leaving after this up-coming season – all of them starters – does the 2011 roster look better than this ?

In recent days, Ben Dukes former Bulldog has spoken out in chart form showing us where Coach Richt’s Offense has ranked every year starting 2001 until today, and the average rank for Coach Richt Era on Offense is NCAA # 52 Total Offense for UGA. Rex Robinson former Bulldog has spoken out about the direction of this Bulldogs’ Football Program and how there is no discipline on or off the field that the players run the show in Athens. Buck Belue has spoken out recently as well about the general direction of the coaching staffs in the entire Coach Richt Era.

Every single publication in the U.S. has spoken out about Coach Richt on the hot seat, and all have concluded that yet another 14-game season with us at least 4 games short will absolutely put UGA on the hot seat. There is no publication that does not conclude this very point.

The utter failure of the current offensive coaching staff is no more apparent than in Coach Richt’s own words to the press here 3 weeks ago announcing in public forum that he is TAKING CONTROL OVER THE FAILED OFFENSIVE COACHING STAFF. If it is not failed, why is Coach Richt taking over for it ?

And, if it is NOT a FAILED Offensive Coaching Staff, why then in this state did UGA sign none of the top offensive all-start players 2010 ?

I have repeatedly asked if the reporters covering this program as beat writers have interviewed all these top in-state offensive stars in this state and asked them about the UGA offensive coaching staff, all everyone coaching a position they themselves did not play in the arena themselves. This while we play favorites on offense, bury better players deep on the depth chart, totally bungle all sense of credibility in redshirt or not redshirt an offensive player here, and leave the recruits all wanting to play offense anywhere but here where for 4 years running we have averaged 39 Arrests / Suspensions in just the last 3 years off the field while on the field we for 4 years average # 96 NCAA in penalties, average for 4 years running 21 fumbles a year, and average for 4 years running 14 interceptions a year – leaving us looking at South Carolina in Game 2 or Coach Richt will be 10-11 vs SEC East that night in the last 5 years then.

Too much to ask the in-state offensive all-stars why they ALL signed with other SEC schools, you know the ones beating us ON THE FIELD ? This coaching staff for 9 years of the Coach Richt Regime has been no good, as it appears to EVERYONE, and Coach Richt stubbornly kept the offensive coaching staff, preferring to tell he is going to do their job and his this up-coming season. For 9 years, Coach Richt has had a horrible coaching staff and the recruits have spoken.

Bogus stat of what your won / loss record is in The Coach Richt Era against Top 10 Final AP Poll teams at just 3 wins out of 11 games (3-8.) ?

First, let me address the other half of that point of mine meansonny :

I said that Coach Richt in the entire Coach Richt Era has won only 3 games against Final AP Poll Top 10 teams and lost 8, removing us from consideration to then beat in a big bowl game on the National Stage a Top 10 Final AP Poll team AND that he has LOST 8 MORE GAMES to teams NOT RANKED in the Final AP Poll Top 25 even.

I see you are trying to IGNORE meansonny that Coach Richt has lost 8 games to teams NOT RANKED in the Top 25 Final AP Poll.

As for Alabama, last season for example :

BEAT # 2 Final AP Poll Texas 2009
BEAT # 3 Final AP Poll Florida 2009
BEAT # 10 Final AP Poll Virginia Tech 2009

That is 3-0 just LAST YEAR meansonny, more wins over Final AP Poll Top 10 teams. In just this one 2009 season last year Alabama beat three (3) Top 10 teams in the Final AP Poll Top 10, while Coach Richt has beat 3 in all his years here, now Year 10 this up-coming season, while LOSING 8 instead. Quit making excuses for Coach Richt’s failures vs Top 10 Final AP Poll teams meansonny.

Let’s look at Florida, also an SEC team beating us, the year before last :

BEAT # 5 Final AP Poll Oklahoma 2008.
BEAT # 6 Final AP Poll Alabama 2008.
BEAT # 13 Final AP Poll Georgia 2008.

That is 3 MORE Top 10 Final Poll teams yet another SEC team beat. Two (2) are Top 10 Final AP Poll wins by Florida the year before last (And, to listen to UGA fans citing the USA Today Coaches’ Poll Top 10 Finish by UGA in 2008, that is again 3 Top 10 Final Poll teams Florida beat in 2008 – as many once again like Alabama last year that Florida beat the year before, as Coach Richt has beat in all his entire career here now starting year 10 with but 3 wins over Top 10 Final AP Poll teams and 8 losses for entire Coach Richt Era.)

I thought this was bogus meansonny ?

I thought this never happens meansonny ?

BOTH of the last 2 years, for example, SEC teams OTHER THAN UGA have BOTH won as many games against Top 10 Final Poll teams as Coach Richt has in his ENTIRE CAREER here now starting year 10. And, both of them went UNDEFEATED at 3-0 in just 1 year while in now his Year 10 here at UGA, Coach Richt is 3-8 vs Top 10 Final AP Poll teams.

By the way, Won / Loss record is NOT A STAT, it is our WON / LOSS RECORD against non Top 25 Final AP Poll teams of which Coach Richt already has 8 such losses and 8 more losses to Top 10 Final AP Poll teams of whom he has beat but 3.

We don’t beat the good teams and we don’t beat the really bad teams either.

Since when is whether you won or lost the game, a stat ?

We ALSO are 10-10 won / loss over the last 4 years against just SEC East teams, and 5 of those are against SEC East teams NOT RANKED in the Top 25 Final AP Poll. By your theory they should be ranked because they BEAT US. And, not ranked because we beat them. Yet, once again, it is COMPLETELY the opposite.

So what we have is

2009 Alabama went 3-0 vs Top 10 Final Poll teams.
2008 Florida went 3-0 vs Top 10 Final Poll teams

Coach Richt has won 3 games (as many as either Alabama just last year or as many as Florida just the year before last alone) vs Top 10 Final Poll teams in his entire career lost 8.

NOT BOGUS. Good try meansonny.

BuLLdawg- I would love it if the Dogs had a ‘14 game’ season! You know what that would mean, right?

Are you one of those types who took that 2008 pre-season #1 to heart, and are now miffed about the 2009 season? Come on! You knew, as well as the entire Bulldog Nation, going into ‘09 was going to be mediocre, at best. At least, I hope you realized that.

I do happen to agree with you on Bobo….UGA is not the place to be riding your training wheels. I don’t understand what CMR is doing with the Bobo project. I kinda get, to my dislike, of his loyalty to WM.

Barack Dawg

May 24th, 2010
9:02 am

All you monday morning QBs – you should step up and go coach a team and see what the situation is and how you compare. When you talk about CMR – you need to remember the losers before him and after Dooley. That was miserable. Not saying we don’t have room for improvement at UGA but Dooley was in the same situation when he was at UGA after 10 years and Richt’s record is better than Dooley’s and against much tougher competition.

While I would agree discipline is needed, UGA is not the only school with athletes that have issues off the field. Every program does. Richt has been cracking down on that as well. You need to chill out and see what happens with the changes that have taken place since the end of last season. Likewise, we have a great defensive staff in place now. That was a problem since Van Gorder left and as a result Richt could not focus on other areas. He has taken heat and made a change. Give it a chance before you continue to chastise and criticize.

Because of the coaching changes last year, we lost a lot of recruits as a result some because they did not fit Grantham’s scheme and others because they were recruited by Martinez and not comfortable with the change. Then there is the one case with Da’Prick who was comitted the whole time and then backed out at the last minute. We can see how that works out for him. But then you look at the next recruiting class. That is stacking up to be a real bread winner. Now with a coaching staff in place to coach kids up, the defense should step back up and continue to improve.

With the defense being dealt with, Richt can work on the offense with Bobo. Not saying that Bobo is the greatest but Richt was a great OC at Florida State so I am more comfortable with him dealing with the offense. What he has to manage is not to screw up the recruiting coming up.

Also – you criticize Richt – you would be criticizing Meyer the same way if he had not been lucky enough to have recruited Teebow. Teebow did something that UGA has lacked for a while as well – LEADERSHIP by a player. The coaches can only do so much. They can’t play and lead the players while they are on the field. They have to do that. That is what you are looking for. With that said, we will see if we have some step up this year but I believe that Lemay is going to be one who can come in and do that as well.

If Stafford had been the leader that Teebow was, then we would have had different results when he was at UGA. You can’t teach a kid at this level to be a leader, they either are or they are not. Unfortunately for us, UGA has had more than their fair share of players who are NOT leaders.

I would expect a big pick up this year and if not in the record, in the emotion, approach, and style of play. But I would caution Ga fans to not be put their expectations to high this year and be reasonable. We have a great offense coming back but a new QB. We have a new D scheme. I don’t expect miracles and I would not put CMR in jeopardy because of this upcoming year. However, if the offense struggles like the O-line did last year out of the gate and Bobo does not focus on running the ball, then I would expect some opportunity for change in the Offensive Coordinator but not the Head Coach.

One question I would ask – if you fire Richt then who replaces him? Do you get Muschamp or Smart? How do you know they will win as HC without any experience? How long would you give them to figure it out? Can they win 10 games a year for 9 years trying to figure it out? Richt was an OC when he came to UGA and has 90 – 27 record. I caution UGA fans to not take that lightly lest you will have to suffer the consequences.

Each year the players from around the country love to come here and play before the great crowds and UGA shows them a great time also.
