Late-night news from Athens is all good for Dogs, including upset of Gators

Lots of news came in from Athens late Friday night –- all of it good if you’re a Georgia fan:

——————-

A few minutes before midnight, Georgia’s men’s tennis team upset rival Florida 4-2 in the NCAA tournament at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

The rain-delayed victory avenged two Georgia losses to the Gators earlier this season and put the Bulldogs in the NCAA quarterfinals. Florida was the tournament’s No. 6 seed and Georgia the No. 11 seed.

Georgia’s victory marked the second time in four years the Dogs have knocked the Gators out of the NCAA men’s tennis tournament. Georgia is now 51-18 all-time against Florida in men’s tennis.

The Dogs got off to a good start in Friday’s match by winning the doubles point, but had to rally in singles after the Gators took the first set on four of the six courts.  The clinching victory came when Georgia’s 22nd-ranked Javier Garrapiz beat Florida’s 7th-ranked Alex Lacroix 6-4, 7-6(5) at No. 1 singles.

Georgia also  got victories from Nate Schnugg at No. 2 singles and Drake Bernstein at No. 4. Bernstein dropped  the first set but came back for a 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory.

In his post-match comments, Florida coach Andy Jackson gave credit to the Georgia team and fans:

“Georgia was underrated by everyone but us. They’ve got national championship type players. We understood coming into the match how hard it was going to be. . . .

“They had a ton of people here, but it’s nothing different than what we had earlier in Florida. They were trying to get into our heads, which is what you have to expect. To their credit, it’s great that they got their fans here.”

In the quarterfinals, Georgia will face Oklahoma, which upset No. 3 seed Texas 4-2.  The Georgia-Oklahoma match is scheduled for 5 p.m. Sunday. Former Georgia player John Roddick is in his first season as Oklahoma’s coach.

Sunday’s other men’s quarterfinals: No. 1 seed Virginia vs. UCLA, defending champion USC vs. Ohio State and Tennessee vs. Baylor

(And if you missed it, here’s a story on how Athens became the capital of college tennis.)

——————-

David Perno told his Georgia baseball team to treat the season-closing series against Kentucky as the first games of next season. By that measure, the 2011 Bulldogs are off to a 2-0 start.

In yet another example of just how crazy the game of baseball can be, Georgia has posted back-to-back wins over Kentucky the past two nights, 8-6 on Thursday and 20-0 on Friday. That gives the Dogs just one fewer SEC win in this series (2) than they had all season previously (3).

In Friday’s rain-delayed game, Georgia (now 16-36 overall, 5-22 SEC) posted its largest margin of victory in an SEC game since 1994. The Bulldogs collected 22 hits –- all singles -– and got a combined shutout from starter Jeff Walters, who went a career-high seven innings, and two relievers. Offensively, Johnathan Taylor went 5-for-5, Kyle Farmer 4-for-5 and Kevin Ruiz 4-for-4.

The Bulldogs go for a sweep of Kentucky when they close the series -– and the season –- with a Saturday afternoon game. Whatever happens in the finale, Georgia has clinched its first SEC series of the season.

“This program can thrive, and it will thrive again,” Perno said late Thursday. “And to feel some success on the last weekend and to get a little momentum, that has helped us in years past, and hopefully it’ll do the same again.”

(What went wrong this season, notwithstanding the past two nights? Click here.)

——————-

In a game pushed back 2 ½ hours by the weather, Georgia’s softball team got off to a good start in the NCAA tournament, beating Elon 10-4 in an Athens Regional opener Friday night.

Two-run homers by Taylor Schlopy and Alisa Goler gave Georgia a school-record 90 homers for the season.

The Bulldogs (44-11) next play Florida State (44-16) at noon Saturday. FSU beat Radford 10-1 in five innings Friday afternoon.

Can we get the tennis coach to assist the football coach. It would seem the tennis team has florida’s number. It’s great to be a gator hater but it’s not good to consistently lose to the gators in football. I measure the season by how the ga/fla game goes. I’d lose them all to beat the gators.
It’s a very long drive from Jacksonville most of the time. I’ll consider CMR truly successful when he starts beating florida.

Those old gold comments are so lame and lack imagination. Too bad we can’t be as good as the Ga Tech choirboys who have never had any arrests because they are afraid to go outfor fear of being mugged in Atl.(Thought I’d return the lame comment.) Congrats to the UGA teams. What happened to the UGA pitching staff this year?

This was a team with all the potential in the world but needed some real coaching.Pitching coach Wiederhold has taken what was to be a plus and turned it into abyssmal. He’s got to go.Perno should never of gotten rid of Roger Williams.Louisville(of all schools) has been a force in baseball since he joined their staff.Perno won’t get another pass after a year like this again!!

Great idea,
Pretty pathetic when you’d lose all 11 games for a single victory over UF. Just shows the level of domination the Mighty Gators have achieved over the Dawgs. Even in the years the tables were turned (mostly 70’s), I would never have said that I’d be happy with 10 losses and a victory over UGA. Strive for something more. Set lofty goals. Otherwise, you’re destined to fail!

Thank you Bulldog baseball for taking care of business against UK. Your vitories, coupled with Bama taking the first 2 in its series at UT, have propelled the Tide into the SEC tournament. The fight you have shown in this final series says a lot about the heart of your players and your coaches. It’s been a long season but I’m betting next year you’ll be back in the SEC and NCAA tournaments where you belong. Go Dogs and Roll Tide!

“Who cares about tennis?” Really?

I guess some of you “fans” didn’t actually go to UGA. If you did, you knew to go to the tennis matches…and especially to the NCAA finals. The crowd is SUPER intense and as many beautiful women as there are on a football game day, the hotness level is as high, only more concentrated.

Football’s great, don’t get me wrong. But tennis matches are totally underrated.

Class, dismissed.

Was the tennis match on tv

If it was please send the tape to the football team and coaching staff and make them watch it everday just after they have watched themselves get beat in JAX

Cut practice short to do this because obviously practice isnt working since they need motivational uniforms to supposedly get up to play FL

Hopefully they will find inspiration in watching themselves and watching someone MAN UP AND BEAT FL

I don’t care if it’s tiddlywinks, if we’re competing against anybody, but especially UF and/or Tech, or UT, or AU, or…well you get it…I care and so should anybody that claims to cares about UGA. We can be proud of our tennis teams’ accomplishments over the years…I’m just glad that Dan McGill’s still here to witness it. The man got us there and we’ve been there ever since. They didn’t name that place after him for nothin’, ya know.

Better yet, why not approach the players or coaches in person and giving them some real examples of “man up” in your life? Obviously they don’t understand that’s all it takes. They might get be getting confusing signals as that “man up” lesson comes in the form of an anonomous voice hiding in a sports blog.

There is no debating that UGA has the most successful tennis program in the nation. Along with gymnastics, softball, equestrian, golf, track, and other sports, it goes to show why we routinely compete across the board for the most national titles. Oh yeah, and our football and basketball teams are both going strong and whip (year after year) our in-state “rival.” Did I mention our academics are solid and UGA is rated as one of the best schools in the nation? Good time to be a Dawg!

Good news for Tech fans – no Tech students were arrested last night on terrorism charges and no football players arrested for drug felonies. However, four students were held up again on that beautiful campus of yours, but the tech “women” involved kicked the robbers tails since these tech ladies are each able to bench 300 lbs and have more weight than the jackets offensive line.

Listen, the so-called UGA fans on here not caring about tennis are not true fans and most absolutely did not go to UGA. I don’t care if it’s under water basket weaving; if the Dawgs win I love it! Its school pride. Any True Fan from any college should feel the same way.
I to hope that some of the football team was there to see what it is like to battle and win against UF. I hate the dominance that they have had against us, but I also give them their props and credit.

It seems that the NCAA events are always in Athens. I thought it was something I was imagining but now after reading the linked story – I realize that they UGA has built in an unfair advantage. Get the NCAA tennis tournaments spread around the country and that goes for the SEC football championship game, too. Enough is too much.
