Dogs match Tide, Gators on Phil Steele’s preseason All-SEC teams

College football’s preseason hype is flowing at full force.  Analyst/publisher Phil Steele’s various preseason All-America and all-conference teams came out this week. Georgia is well represented.

The Bulldogs have six players on the  preseason All-SEC first team, tying Alabama for the most, and 14 selections on the four all-conference teams combined, tying Florida for the most.

Also, Georgia has two players on the preseason All-America first team –- one of five schools with two or more — and five players on the four All-America teams.

Here are the details on Georgia’s representation on the Phil Steele College Football preseason teams:

All-America first team: Wide receiver A.J. Green and punter Drew Butler.

All-America second team: Placekicker Blair Walsh.

All-America third team: Offensive tackle Clint Boling.

All-America fourth team: Kickoff returner Brandon Boykin.

All-SEC first team: Green, Boling, Boykin (as kickoff returner), Walsh, Butler and outside linebacker Justin Houston.

All-SEC second team: center Ben Jones, offensive guard Cordy Glenn and running back Washaun Ealey.

All-SEC third team: Tight end Orson Charles, offensive guard Chris Davis, linebacker Marcus Dowtin and Boykin (as cornerback).

All-SEC fourth team: Safety Bacarri Rambo.

Brianna – Let’s see what happens when Meyer drops dead on the sideline because he has bad health…urrrrr I mean he needed a break. Funny everyone says Richt will get 7 – 8 wins every year…He has only one with year where had less than 10 and that was last year. Wait and see how your defense goes since no one seems to understand how underrated Charlie Strong was and how big an impact that will be with his departure. You have talent but can your coaches get it to perform.

Martinez at UGA should have provided plenty of results when you get talent and don’t coach it. That is done for UGA. We don’t know about Florida’s DC and the one before him quit 10 days later to go to Buffalo. AYFKM…. You better worry about your team and don’t worry about UGA. You will no longer be facing the UGA with a Martinez D so don’t be surprised if the tide starts changing…

To further prove my point. Take a look at the number of SEC Championships and National Championships that Bama. Yet they just had their first Hesiman Trophy winner in their storied history. Great coaching and TEAM effort win titles. Individual accolades are for golfers and tennis players…..or the postseason.

Preseason hype…preseason talk….preseason jack…all Gator fans care about is season wins and season championships…and we have celebrated a bunch of those lately…including the national variety. Florida has a lot to prove this year….and I think they will…with no hype from me…other than John Brantley will be an All-American QB by the end of the season unless he gets injured. Go Gators! I look forward to seeing the Dawgs in Jax.

DawginMemphis – I agree Rambo is going to be the next Berry. With a little good coaching on defense, which we have now, the Dawgs are going to be tough on defense. I think our turn-over ratio is going to change from last year’s big negative to this year’s huge positive.

Phil Steele is pretty much the only college football analyst that I really like. He usually knows what he’s talking about. Can’t say that about ESPN, SI, Athlon, and all the others. Sometimes when I read their reviews its clear these guys know nothing of what they speak about the individual teams. Steele actually does research the teams thoroughly and I use his guide in my gambling picks.

His all sec picks look very solid. Fla. and UGA both have great punters. I probably would have put the gator punter on 1st team but who really cares. I doubt dog fans would be offended by that. I think he picked 9-10 wins for the dawgs. That sounds about right. 11-1 on the high side for the regular season with 9-10 more likely since the dawgs should be favored in every game save Florida.

Pre-Season Polls are pretty useless. The same can be said about Pre-Season All Conference Selections. Injuries, Suspensions, Poor Team play on one side of the ball or the other can take a dominant player and keep him on the sidelines. Does anyone really think besides Butler, and a Lineman that UGA will be player dominant in 2010? I hope they are better than 09. However with a schedule that is somewhat favorable, UGA may surprise some folks, on the other hand when you replace coaches and the recruits you are bringing in are lacking experience, learning schemes and were not the most recognized group in the SEC..it will be a climb.

If UGA finishes 9-3 it will be a GREAT Year. If UGA finishes 8-4 it will be a GOOD year. If UGA finishes 7-5 it will be a rebuilding year…or more problems on the way for CMR.

Talent at AL, UF, SC, AU, LSU, all moved past UGA and with the discipline UGA showed in 09 it may be a long year.

Why discussing talent…did anyone catch KIFFIN on HBO…he had 5 first and second round draft picks and left the cubbard bare in Knoxville. He had talent at UT, but his coaching is soley based on what Monte does with the defense. USC will be on probation and will lose a boat load of scholarships……Kiffin last 3 years and gets fired……would be a nice fit ending to a sorrow human being. The fluff piece that HBO left alot to be desired. Hey LANE , they cut your cell phone off because you were trying to get UT recruits to not go to class and follow you to USC.

USC has to be the favorite in the east this year, too much experience returning especially those tall wrs. Spurrier always has a way of screwing with his QBS mind and causing harm, if Garcia can handle it USC will be good. I think UF will more explosive on offence this year but worry about their ability too sustain drives. UGA will go as far as Murray takes them. Defence will be an improvement and the running game will be good. UGA’s receiving group will be the best that i have ever seen at UGA. Alabama has to be the favorite in the west. Always enjoy Phil Steele’s take on college football, but get sick of him gloating on his past predictions . GO DAWGS!

Personally, I love the fact that the Gators are not in the spotlight this year. BAMA looks to be the only real powerhouse in the SEC this year until proven otherwise. The fun will begin in a little over 100 days. Passing cheap shots at one another proves nothing.
Good luck to all SEC Schools and Go Gators!

Realistically – we will be favored to win La. Lafeyette and Idaho St. – given
Vandy – usually a tough game, but we should be favored
Colorado – down last year, better this year
UT – in Athens, they may have a slight down year (better than most expect though)
Probably still favored at Miss. St. and Auburn – but both will be better than last year
Ark. and South Carolina could both be really good this year, we may be slightly favored, but I don’t know….
GT will be down a little this year (9-3?), but their defense gets really good next year.
UF – coming off an off week for them – we will get crushed probably
Kentucky – we’re probably favored, but it is in Lexington.

We will probably lose to either Ark. or SC and maybe both.
Lose to UF
Auburn a toss up at the Flats
GT a toss up

So a bad year 6-6 or 7-5
Probably 8-4, maybe 9-3
A perfect storm – 11-1
I do think UF will lose 2 games this year, because they actually play a schedule, but 1 will be outside the SEC probably (USF or FSU), so they will probably still be SEC East champs.

Go Dawgs!

Learning a new Defensive scheme against SC’s best offensive team in the Spurrier era and Ryan Mallet/Bobby Petrino, early in the season, doesn’t bode well for the Dawgs. Grantham is the answer for the D, but 2012 before it gets close to where it needs to be. Give him time….

All of the ingredients, plus some nice intangibles are in place for UGA to be very decent this year and in 2011. Anyone with only a modest level of knowledge of the SEC kknows that very talented kids emerged last year with indications of the future. THAT FUTURE IS NOW.

Wooten, Charles, T.End Lynn from Mass., Marvelous Marlon Brown, Murray, Troupe, Tavarres King, return of Chris Durden and AJ and Boykin and the O line blocking for UGA’s 3 FULLBACKS and running backs and the kids on the D line like Dangelo Tyson and the very mobile linebackers and the tons and tons of talented safeties like Hamilton, Rambo, Ogltree and renewed vigor on D will propell UGA laong toward a very good year. Richt knows that it is NOW. He too is pumped and he has undergone some rough things in his life and he is ready to rumble.

Go Dogs. Another fun year to look forward to.

Saban has ALL the $$ ......he needs a challenge

May 21st, 2010
10:18 am

Nick at Bama is very, very likely in his last year. No, don’t tell me about the Alabama alumnii and their ability to pony up some $$. Nick has all the $ that he needs. No, he is motivated by a pioneering type of challenge. He has done that at Bama and if he wins it this year or not, he will leave Tuscaloosa. His wife hates that area.

No, he will end up in Michigan and over two years, he could easily re build them into a national championship program. By doing that at 3 major schools in two of the best conferences, he would be the Knute Rocknee of NCAA all time history. He would out Knutte, Knutte.

This reality is known to all Alabama alums ………they understand that. That got what they wanted with the 09 title, now time is Alabama’s worst enemey. One and done or two and he blew.

Saban has wonderlust. He sprinkled some greatness dust on Bama, one more year and he is done. That year is now.

Nothing lasts forever, not even Paul Bear Bryant did that and he could walk on water and he sold VW’s to boot!!

When he leaves …………..where she stops …………nobody knows, as far as Bama’s continuity of being on top. It could be another 15-20 year dormancy. Everything runs in cycles. All except Global Warming, which does not exist anyway.

It’s kind of sad to see all the Dawg fans getting so excited this year (just like the year before, the year before that, etc.). How long is it going to take for UGA fans to realize that UGA is simply no longer relevant in the SEC? In the national picture, UGA isn’t even a blip on the radar, and hasn’t
been since the preseason #1 ranking two years ago.

Sit back and be grateful for the seven or eight wins you’ll get every year. Coaching genius Mark Richt may take you to 10-2 or even 11-1 occasionally, but Florida will still win the SEC, meaning no BCS bowls and no top 15 final ranking. Most years, UGA will be very lucky to finish in the top 25, and only after a big bowl win over a nobody opponent.

It’s a different world now, and Dawg fans, like FSU and Ole Miss fans, need to adjust their expectations downward to reflect reality.

Unfortunately nothing is going to change until UGA changes its mediocre coaching. That’s where the difference is, and that’s why everyone outside Bulldog Nation just laughs at Dawg fans getting so excited year after year about what a great recruiting class UGA gets. It doesn’t matter how many
blue chip high school plays go to UGA, they simply don’t get the coaching they would get at Florida or Alabama, to name two schools whose programs are far ahead of UGA. And that’s not going to change as long as Mark Richt is in Athens.

Get your heads out of the sand and face reality. And mediocrity and irrelevance.

A test?

May 21st, 2010
1:20 pm

How many of the entire group of Phil Steele’s SEC all stars/All Americans are former 5 or 4 star kids? I do not know. Does anyone out there know?? The answer could be very interesting.

Maybe if UGA ’s kids were only 3 and 4 star kids, then, um, ah, maybe if they are now considered All Star caliber, maybe um, ah, CMR and Co have coached them up. How else?? could they be listed in the same qty with Florida and Alabama, where ” we all know their coaches are the best and they get all the 5 star kids” and “CMR is just a loser.” Right???

In other words, if Bama and Florida have 5 star kids listed by Steele and UGA has only AJ listed as a former 4 or 5 star kid, then how else could UGA’s kids now be considered ALL American/ALL SEC candidates??

I rest my case. It proves that most of the bloggers here are un educated when they bad mouth Richt and that they lack the ability to reason and to use logic. Facts always prove them wrong.

how2fish …….thanks.

Really, if there is anyone out there with the rankings of the former 5 stars and former 4 star kids on Phil Steele’s SEC All Star Bama, Florida, UGA list, I would like to know.

The opposite is also true for the other two schools ……….possibly, they have a bunch of 3 star kids and they have coached them up. Either way, ( even if UGA’s kids were all former 5 stars ) the UGA kids and the Bama kids and the Florida kids are considered all star material in a rough, tough Big Boy League ………now.

Coaching is the root cause of the kids being named all stars. They apparently impressed the man with their skills in 09 within the respective system and got named to the all star list.

There is no way that one can imply that they were either “no good 3 stars” or that they “have not been COACHED UP” by Urban, Nick and of course, Mark Richt. Certainly, they can not isolate their argument to just UGA.

True test this list is to see if bloggers( UGA haters) have a clue about their baseless claims about CMR.
Go Dogs.

He gets good players, they play well and win over 13 years in a row ( with Donnan’s help ) 8 or more games and only UGA can claim this achievement.

Besides, the 8-5 year allowed our current crop of frosh to play and now they will pay dividends. Like the UGA 1979 team was ………..close but it did not reflect in the record until later in 80, 81, 82,etc.

I have always enjoyed doing business in Mobile, Montgomery and B’ham, Alabama. I like the state, the folks and I do admire the Alabama football history, mostly dating back to the Bear. I also remember all 3? or 4? times that UGA defeated him over about 15 years or so with either Vince Dooley coaching or Ray Goff playing and or coaching against them.

Ann Arbor will STILL be the best small town coaching destination to finally retire in and Saban’s lovely, quality, wife will allow him to make that COACHING decision. She and he do like small towns and Ann Arbor and the life style there will exceed Tuscaloosa every time and in every category.

Saban is gone come December when or if Rodriguez is fired.
