There’s mutual interest between the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game and Georgia about the Bulldogs playing a season-opening football game in Atlanta at some point. But no specific year or opponent has been targeted to make it happen.
“We still have a great level of interest in trying to put Georgia in that Kickoff weekend, and also Georgia Tech,” Chick-fil-A Bowl president and CEO Gary Stokan said Monday. “Both [Georgia AD] Damon [Evans] and [Tech AD] Dan Radakovich would like to play in the game, and we’re just trying to continue to work to get a matchup that works for both of them. Obviously not against each other — we’ve already tried that.”
Evans last year rejected a proposal to play the 2011 Georgia-Georgia Tech game at the start of the season in the Georgia Dome. But Evans said a couple of months ago that he wants the Bulldogs to open a season in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game at some point against a non-conference opponent that doesn’t typically appear on the Bulldogs’ schedule.
Stokan is kicking around the idea of adding a second Kickoff Game in 2012, perhaps pairing a Thursday game with a Saturday game. N.C. State and Tennessee already are committed to meet in one 2012 game, and Stokan recently expressed interest in an Alabama-Miami matchup for the other. However, he said Monday that pairing now appears unlikely.
“I think Miami ultimately is going to do a deal with Notre Dame for ‘12 in Chicago,” he said. That would take Miami out of the picture for a ‘12 game in the Georgia Dome, he said.
What about UGA in 2012? That’s not in the offing, either.
“It looks like it probably will be after ‘12 for us to get Georgia or Georgia Tech in the game,” Stokan said.
Georgia has said it would only consider playing a non-conference game at a neutral site if it has six other games in Athens that particular season. And with a game at Louisville already on the 2012 schedule, Georgia isn’t looking to add another BCS-caliber non-conference opponent that season.
Alabama coach Nick Saban has said he’s interested in a 2012 neutral-site game in Atlanta or Dallas against any of several possible opponents.

A Clemson UGA season opening matchup in the dome would be interesting, but only if UGA does not give up a home game in Sanford Stadium. I would also like to see other venues such as New Orleans sponser season opening matchup games. I would rather travel to NO than Atlanta.

Since is may be a while before Tennessee is ‘ready’ to take on USC – the California one, then I say Georgia ought to do it. Assuming the Trojans and Kiffin aren’t on probation and banned from TV and assuming this game isn’t considered a ‘bowl-type’ game by the NCAA from which they may also be banned, then dammit, let’’s do it. Somebody down here needs to ‘have a go’ at that SOB and if there’s a God we’ll beat him by 50…and if God’s not paying attention, we’ll settle for 30.

Clemson, why give them a door to recruit the state of Georgia?
Clemson’s last ACC title was in ‘91 just as the series with UGA was going on longer and longer hiatus.
Clemson profits more from playing in the Dome than, UGA bring in someone from outside the Southeast if the game must be played.
Favors and Evans should be trying their hardest to get the Kick Off Classic moved from Atlanta.

Is Gary Stokan also seeking land for Ala’s Atlanta campus, or is the Georgia Dome soon to be renamed the “Roll Tide Dome”? Stokan is obviously a mental midget who is captivated by Nick Saban.
Hey Gary, why not get out of the ACC vs SEC mode, find a Big 10, Big 12 or Pac 10 opponent to play Georgia. Forget Clemson, no advantage in playing them. Have you considered Boise St on a Thursday night? Get your head out of Saban’s butt and TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT for God’s sakes.

I don’t see how Georgia will be able to schedule a game at the Dome as long as Damon Evans insists on playing home and home series against schools like Louisville, Oregon, and Clemson. It’s just not feasible.
If it were up to me, I’d say do away with those home and home games and play at least one game at the Georgia Dome a year so long as Georgia does not have to play less than six games at Sanford. It’d give the Dawgs a stronger foothold in Atlanta and keep rival SEC schools out.

He won four of his first five games against Tennessee, but has lost three of the last four against the Vols since then.
He was born the same year as Chuck D of Public Enemy.
Ranks third in winning percentage among active college coaches that have coached for at least five years, now that Pete Carroll left USC for the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks.
He is 90-27, trailing only Urban Meyer (96-18) and Bob Stoops (117-29).\\yeah he is pretty damn good
Mark Richt is one of only six coaches to win two SEC football championships in their first five years coaching. He is also one of only five head coaches in SEC history to record four straight 10-win seasons
Coach Richt’s Red and Black outfits have never posted a losing record in conference play and six of his last eight squads have finished 6-2 or better in regular-season SEC contests.
Mark Richt’s overall success in Southeastern Conference action—including two SEC titles, three conference championship game appearances, and four finishes of no worse than tied for first place in the East, with no losing records in the process—is without parallel in Georgia football history.

bkb, we tried that (Clemson) a few years ago and we killed them both years. It’s not like the good ol’ days when it came down to a last second field goal. UGA needs to stick to what they’re doing now. The SEC schedule is tough enough and I like playing one exciting non conference opponent as well as tech but a few cupcakes is necessary too. Everyone else schedules a couple of cupcakes so we should too. Nothing wrong with a couple of confidence boosters throughout the season. It’s been proven not to hurt your chances of getting to the NCG. My God, look at ohio state! If UGA played in the big 10, we’d play for the title every year!

I’m not saying that we’re scared of anyone because we definitely aren’t, but from a strategical standpoint we need to concentrate on winning the SEC and beating tech and a few cupcakes to get to the other big dogs of college football in January. Congrats, again, on your “bigger and better” bowl game in Shreveport this year.
Clemson and Georgia should play annually, period. It’s one of the better rivalries in the Southeast that simply disappeared when the schools got too greedy about home game revenue. Scheduling Georgia Southern and Furman does not make for happy fans. Either let the teams share home-and-home games, or have the game at a neutral venue annually and let the schools split the pot.

It is only when the series broke off did Clemson’s program go in the tank. And they do not have near the success recruiting Georgia as they did. My opinion? Let sleeping dogs lie. Today we look at you Guy:
Strengths:
.
Excessive confidence in his own powers of intellect and self importance. This narcissitic personality enables him to feel superior enough to everyone else which allows him to arrogantly sit in judgement on other bloggers and do so in such a way as to make people actually think he was asked for his opinion.
.
Weakness:
.
Essentially the same thing. As a narcissitic individual he natually thinks his opinion is superior then everyone elses and he should therefore sit in judgement over his peers. This leads to the ultimate fallaciy that he is totally unaware that no one really cares what he thinks of our fellow bloggers or UGA. This is to be expected because being lost in ones own little world, like his obviously is, and surviving on the idea that he has some magical intellectual superiority over the general CFB bloggers is a hallmark of a true Narcissitic Personality Disorder.

Two obvious choices for the Georgia Dome: UGA vs Tech ( which Evans turned down – but why?) or UGA vs Florida (which Evans also screwed up by renewing the UGA permanently away game with Florida – stupid!). They could have alternated UGA/Tech with UGA/Fla in the Dome and shut Bama and these other intruders out of the state of Georgia – but Evan’s short sightedness took over. My question is – just what has Evans done for UGA that has merited his huge contract raise? Would Saban allow Meyer, or Meyer allow Saban to play a game of such prominenece in their state – not if they could block it by playing in the game themselves.

It is sad to see so many UGA fans want Clemson.
UGA needs to improve to take on a top team early in the season. The team has struggled to beat S. Car early I’d hate to see what Oklahoma, Texas, or Penn St would do early.

Both teams will have experienced QB’s talented skill players all over the field and both defenses will be stout, hopefully UGA hold up that end of the bargain. This game will be a TV dream. Otto, I agree with wanting to see UGA play a tough(er) opening game. Boise State and OK State were supposed to be tough when we signed up with them (the last go ’round with OSU was a tough one). However, you can’t use SC as a barometer for UGA’s early season readiness. That is always a tough game no matter how good either team is.
I’d like to see a mid-tier Big 10, Big 12 or Pac 10 team in a neutral “home-n-home” type of location. Atlanta one year and Dallas, Chicago, or LA the next year. That would give us good exposure to recruits in markets other than the SEC.

It depends on how far away from the state they want to look. If it’s pretty close then I’d say FSU.
Otherwise I’d like to see them play a team like Michigan, Notre Dame, or Missouri. Somebody the dawgs don’t typically ever see in other words.
For the taliban they should pair them against Murray St, Morehead St, UT Martin, etc. Or of course they could play Jacksonville St again. Need to make sure they play a cupcake so they don’t embarrass the state of Ga.

If this continues to be an SEC vs ACC affair, then let UGA play someone like a Miami or a UNC. We haven’t played either in many years. Why give Clemson a leg up on recruiting in Atlanta, they get enough Ga. players every year as it is. Miami fills their roster in South Fla., and UNC has never had any recruiting base in Ga. and probably would not benefit from that standpoint. Me thinks these matchups would be very interesting to see as both of the mentioned programs appear to be on the upswing.Yeah, I know, maybe UGA is on the upswing also. I said it before some of the “bashers” beat me to it!

The UGA Cats will probably want to play Wyoming, Baylor, Middle Tennessee State, or some such team since that is generally whom they play out of conference. If Georgia Tech was too strong to play against in the game how far down in schedule strength do they plan to play?
The AP has just reported that an invite with ECU (Eastern Carolina) and another to the Temple Owls is on the table.
Georgia has responded that they will only play one of those marquee programs if they still have 6 home games and the game occurs of the fifth Saturday of any month that ends in a three. Late October was turned down since the state often has the DawgDays of Autumn around that time frame (See the Alabama or seasonally UF games to understand that comment).

I don’t think UGA should do a kickoff game. Having to play South Carolina, Tennessee and one hard west team like Arkansas, LSU or Alabama in the 1st 6 games is enough. UGA is a late season team and winning the close games at the beginning of the year until they can get everything together is the history at UGA.

UGA might well be on it’s way by 2011-2012 to take the hill away from Florida in the SEC East. Note the word ‘Might’. It would benefit UGA to lay it on the line early and hope to get a solid matchup with another anticipated probable national contender. Win or lose that game, they wouldn’t lose much in the long run and a win would not be overlooked come seasons end. Aside from the main topic, my thinking is still out on CDD working quick fried magic Atop Rocky but CDD and UT just might become the proverbial darkhorse in the SEC East in 2012. One good thing for the UGA fan : CDD hasn’t promised the Tennessee faithful never to lose to Georgia as long as he’s da Boss…

Where on your resume do you rank the entry ” we won a NC at so and so university.” I doubt that if your alma mater WON TWO Ncs. that it would go on the resume. Doubt it gang.
In other words, IF this dubious accolade is so important, where is it entered on your resume??
It is NOT indicated on the resume and in fact, if it ever comes up that “wow, your ala mater won it all” in 19 so and so or 20 and so and so, that is that.
No, your grades, your extra curricular actvities, major course of study, dictate what goes on the resume. The NC talk? Oh, if you get hired, that comes over a few adult beverages and once the new day begins, it goes back in the very, very back of your mind ……….to focus on WORK.

It will never happen. Georgia is already a local team and it makes no sense to see them in the georgia dome. Atlanta officials want a team from out of state to come in, bring tourist dollars, use local hotels, etc.
On top of that if Nick Saban wants 2012 then more than likely he will get it. Alabama is a marguee national name whether dog fans want to admit it or not. Always has been. Fans from other areas of the country will tune in to watch them in the same way that I would tune in to watch an Oklahoma, USC, Texas, or Ohio State play.
Georgia is a good regional program that probably wouldn’t generate much of a national tv audience. But if you ask me to watch a middle tier regional team from another conference like an Ok. state or an Arizona St. then I’m probably not too interested. That’s why its pretty much a given that the 2012 game will feature Alabama unless they choose to play in Dallas against a big 12 opponent.

You honestly think Richt would schedule an Ohio State, Texas, or Oklahoma? Put the kool aid down.
UGA absolutely will not schedule the top tier 2-3 teams out of any bcs conference. They won’t do it. Never have and never will.
Georgia’s strategy is to continue scheduling mediocre to middle tier bcs conference teams like Ok state which has never won their division, Arizona State which was a .500 team and hasn’t been good in a decade, and Colorado which was 3-9 last year and has had 4 straight losing seasons.
The day that Georgia schedules a top tier opponent from another conference like an OU, Texas, Ohio State, Penn State, is the day I will buy every dog fan on this blog a beer.

He is 24-7 against the SEC West.
He is 28-16 against the SEC East.
He is 38-4 against nonconference opponents.
He is 8-1 against Georgia Tech.
- – - – -
Richt in the last half of his tenure is not near where he was during the first half of his tenure. A losing record against Tennessee, Florida and Auburn tells the story. A team that has rapidly been on the decline since the debacle that was the 2008 season. A team that will never meet the unrealistic expectations of it’s fan base. A team that at best is second tier in the SEC East. A team that will have good seasons, but not great seasons. Richt needs to be gone and i belive he will be gone within two years. he simply cannot get the job done any longer.

I would like to see UGA vs. GT in the Dome (first game of the season) EVERY year. It makes a lot of sense and would allow more fans to watch the game in person. Money is the primary (possibly only) reason why UGA will not agree to this arrangement. It would be like a home game every year for UGA because there are so many UGA fans in the Atlanta area.
I would like to see UGA play VT, FSU, Miami or Clemson in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff game………UGA would probably veto these opponents (holding out for a team which provides a likely victory rather than a tough out-of-conference game).
I would like to see GT play Florida, Auburn, Alabama or Tennessee in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff game. Florida is unlikely because Florida has a history of playing FSU and three VERY soft out-of-conference teams each & every year (GT is not soft enough to fit the Florida game scheduling master plan……….it seems like the criteria requires the three teams be ranked #80 or higher to warrant consideration from Florida!).

UGA absolutely will back away from playing a quality opponent in the season opener.
Now that we’re officially in the off-season, wouldn’t this be the perfect time to take an in-depth look at UGA and have a free-ranging discussion about the problems at UGA and why the arrest rate of players is the highest in the country? it’s common knowledge that UGA is a party school, but have any football players every actually graduated with a real degree? Jan Kemp exposed the school and the coaches almost three decades ago, but there is no sign that anything has improved; if anything, the arrest rate shows that things are getting more outrageous every year while Mark Richt – a decent fellow with no coaching skills – has no clue what to do.
UGA has become a major embarrassment to all Georgians, and we want some answers starting now.

I don’t think that the ChickFilA game is a set SEC vs ACC game. I think it has just been easier to get teams from the ACC and SEC matched up so far. Alabama was very willing to expand their Atlanta footprint for recruiting purposes…. Tennessee and LSU have agreed to games. If Georgia agrees to play one year, it needs to be someone to draw national attention for recruiting purposes. Texas, Oklahoma (never met in football), USC, Ohio State, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State are among the few names that could bring that kind of attention and legitimize Georgia’s participation in a game that has been giving other schools more exposure in the rich Atlanta recruiting grounds. If ChickFilA cannot provide an elite opponent, then UGA does not need to support the game.
As far as the UGA not wanting to play Tech in Atlanta deal…..That was a packaged deal. Tech was wanting UGA to play Tech in Atlanta two years in a row to toggle the home and home series so that Tech does not play Clemson, Georgia, and I think it’s VT at home all in the same season every two years. That’s their problem, not Georgia’s. They need to get the conference to fix that. If I were UGA I would not have agreed to it either.

The Dawg Trainer has this figured out. The Vols would be glad to play Jawja twice in a season. So in the Chicken Classic, Tennessee wins, say 45-19. For the second game, we’d spot the Dawgs 26 points and give ourselves something to shoot for! The Dawgs can bark about finally breaking 30 on us (you’d at least should get 2 field goals from your offense). Win-win for both sides!
