Hutson Mason ‘moving up the depth chart rapidly,’ and other notes

Cleaning out the notebook:

  • With all the turmoil at Georgia’s quarterback position of late, Mark Richt has been fielding a lot of questions on the speaking circuit about incoming freshman Hutson Mason. “I’m sure he’s very excited about what’s going on,” Richt told a group last week. “He’s been moving up the depth chart rapidly because of what happened with Mr. Mettenberger and Logan Gray probably spending most of his time at wide receiver now.”

Asked the followup question of whether he sees Mason playing or redshirting this year, Richt said:  “I don’t know.  I want to see what he can do. If we don’t think he’s ready, I’d be more apt to have Logan continue to be our No. 2 and just go from there. I don’t want to say because I have no idea how he’s going to perform until he shows up.”

  • Another hot topic, of course, is conference expansion. Richt is on record against it for the SEC, mainly because “I think if you get into what would be a super-conference, you’re just not going to play everybody. I think it would feel like two leagues rather than the Southeastern Conference.”
  • Georgia’s baseball season is down to its final series: a visit by Kentucky to Foley Field Thursday through Saturday. The Bulldogs (14-36, 3-22 SEC) will enter the series with a staff earned run average of 8.63, which ranks 283rd among the nation’s 292 Division I teams and is almost two runs per game higher than the previous worst in UGA history (6.80 in 1998). Georgia pitchers have walked 261 batters and thrown 80 wild pitches in 433 innings this season.
  • When Georgia’s men’s tennis team rallied from a 3-1 deficit to beat Florida State 4-3 Sunday, it marked the Bulldogs’ 17th win in 18 NCAA tournament matches since 2007. The victory puts the Dogs in a round-of-16 match against Florida at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex, which once again will be the center of college tennis this week. The NCAA Championships, men’s and women’s, begin a 12-day run there on Thursday. The Georgia-Florida match is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday.
  • The NCAA softball tournament also is heading to Athens this week, with Georgia -– the No. 6 national seed –- hosting one of the 16 regionals. Other teams in the Athens regional: Florida State, Radford and Elon. Georgia’s opening game in the double-elimination regional is against Elon at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Some of these posts are hard to believe they come from educated people.

Here is a young man who has set records, won ball games, been recognized nationally and people want to trash him??? Give me a break.

UGA has signed QBs with much less credentials who have gone on to enjoy great success–Anyone remember Eric Zeier???

I think it would be prudent to give Hutson Mason a chance before you throw him on the garbage heap.

Mason had no offers until the 2009 playoffs, and was a 3-star, #68 QB in the country. His interests were Georgia, Miss. St., Clemson and Virginia. That changed after he threw 8 TDs to beat S. Gwinnett 70-49 in the 2nd round. From the Marietta Daily Journal, in the 46-17 loss to Colquitt County, Mason was 27 of 48, 275 yds., no TDs and 5 Int., 2 returned for TDs.

Hutson Mason completed 78% of his passes as Junior, and came within 50 yards of setting the Georgia high school record, which he broke his senior season by 800 yards. Hutson also completed 73% of his passes as a Senior. Let me repeat, 78% accuracy Jr., 73% accuracy, Sr.

You won’t find another High School QB who took as many passing reps as Mason did at Lassiter, lots of game experience.

Mason owns several state records now.

Shhhh. I hear voices…. the voices of unreason. It’s easy to criticize. No one knows if Mason will ever perform at a high level at UGA. The same applies to most every other QB recruited at any collegiate school. And even if Hutson Mason winds up 3rd string at UGA, that doesn’t mean he will never get an opportunity in view of the attrition that has given him this opportunity in the first place. Good luck kid and don’t waste your time reading sports blogs, there bad on your self-image.

None of that matters

Richt’s mind is made up Murray is the QB for 4 yrs

Hope you learned that from last year no matter how bad Murray is he is our QB for the next 4yrs

Mason get out a pen and piece of paper and take notes, in 5 yrs you will get your chance

Geezus at the negativity. The QB position is there to win in the spring or lose in the fall. If Mason wants it bad enough, if LeMay wants it bad enough, they’ll have their chance. Right now it is obviously Murray’s to lose. One way or another, the cream will rise to the top

You missed my point

Mason could be another John Elway, or Dan Marino for all we know

My point is after watching this coaching staff for 9 yrs they cosistantly do put the best players out there until they are forced to.

Hey remember when shockley was out during the FL game and Joe T played.

Just stop the garbage about “QB So-and-so’s” lack of height. The pros don’t even use top-of-head-height measurement. Some guys have high foreheads, like Peyton Manning. The pros have changed to Eyes Above Turf – Maximum Extension. Memorize that or get off the blogs.

Your logic is flawed. “Richt doesn’t put the best players out there until he is forced to”? what kind of BS is that. For what reason on God’s green earth would Richt not play the best players? How much sense does that make? Now if you wish to retract that asinine remark to “he doesn’t always play the most talented until he needs to” I might understand. The most talented player and the best player aren’t always mutually inclusive. Shockley was more talented than Greene but, Shockley was the best player of the two nor did he give the team the best shot at winning. There is a difference you know?

I’m amazed anyone would sign with UGA after listening to all of you say he will never see the field. What if his parents are reading this? He’d do better to walk on somewhere he’d be appreciated for what he MIGHT be able to bring to the table. No wonder your team is stuck in mediocrity.

I’ve seen the footage of Mason and it frankly wasn’t very impressive. Of course they can surprise you once they get on campus. Maybe he will be such a game manager that his lack of arm strength will not matter. If you watch Stafford’s HS clips and Mason’s HS clips, the difference is such my girlfriend could pick out the better QB.

Check out this clip of Stafford versus Sneed in HS. No question these two were two of the best coming out of HS. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJcQevIzwcg

I would welcome being wrong here, but I just don’t see Mason being a star in the SEC.

Its not an assinine remark

Shockley more talented than Greene really, foot speed yes other than that I don’t think so, if he was he would have played those 4 yrs and not Greene

Shockley couldn’t get it done. Greene could especially in tight games

Your going to tell me Moreno should have sat the bench his freshman yr?

How about Ely last year behind Samuel
cmon Samuel looked that good in practice for them to not realize Ely was much better I guess Richt learned from the Moreno debacle

I can tell you David Pollock did not play his freshman yr and would not have gotten as much playing time had he not have had that great game his sophmore yr against SC

Joe Cox playing all last yr without putting in Gray Murray and MEtt for better experience for this season. Now we have to start over.

Heres one to watch Marlon Brown a wasted redshirt for 3 passes thrown to him he should have played more the kid is good just throw it to him more

Though not a player Willie Martinez and the constant oh he is doing a great job its just the players not executing crap.

I hate to admit it but Gator don’t take no jive is right. A lot of Dawg fans are morons, and this is coming from one of the biggest homers out there. The season is still 4+ months away and now all of the sudden Aaron Murray sucks. He was recruited by EVERY major college to play QB. So tell me who is right, the bloggers or every D1 coaching staff? As far as Mason goes, he may or may not ever play a down. But he is getting a free education at the dream school of a majority of kids from Georgia. And he may just have the chance to lead the team to victory on Saturday. Only time will tell. Lemay may be the best athlete but he shouldn’t anoint himself the savior of UGA athletics just yet. I am sure he is great, but he is still only 17 and as they say “Man plans, God laughs”.

I think alot of people are writing off Murray. So what if he didnt have a great spring game? Last time I checked those don’t count towards anything. He had over 50 offers and could have went anywhere he wanted. I think he’s going to surprise a lot of people.

As far as Mason goes, who knows. He doesn’t ahve all the “stars” or accolades from rivals/scout, but neither did Greene. You just never know. Like someone said earlier, youtube videos are great, but they don’t mean squat. It’s all about how the player grows and can adapt his game to D1.

The answer is… come on… let me hear it… all together now… ZERO.
