Georgia lost three baseball games to Florida over the weekend, which got me to wondering: What is the Bulldogs’ record against the Gators in all sports in head-to-head competition this school year?
It’s not good, as you know. It’s awful, as a matter of fact. It’s 3-14, to be precise.
Here’s Georgia’s record by sport against the Gators in 2009-10 (includes only dual competitions):
(Note: The two scheduled Georgia-Florida softball games were rained out.)
In multi-team competitions (not included above), there were at least a couple of notable occasions when Georgia finished ahead of Florida this school year: Georgia won the SEC men’s golf tournament, where Florida tied for second place, and the SEC women’s swimming and diving meet, where Florida finished second. On the other hand, Florida won the SEC gymnastics meet, where Georgia finished third, and the SEC men’s track and field meet, where Georgia finished fifth.
Georgia gets another shot at the Gators this week. In the NCAA Tennis Championships in Athens, Georgia’s men’s team (the No. 11 seed) will play Florida (the No. 6 seed) in the round of 16 at 6 p.m. Friday. The Dogs and Gators have met twice previously this season in men’s tennis, with Florida winning both times — in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in February and then in an SEC regular-season match in Gainesville.
And if you’re looking for something more upbeat: Watch Aaron Murray’s tape, Mark Richt advises uneasy fans.

A couple of things….
1. Few people care about the aforementioned sports except for football and men’s basketball. But if they did it’s understandable losing to Florida because…
2. Florida has a great sports program. I think they were like 2# in the nation behind UCLA in the number of National Championships won in every sport.
3. UGA losing to Florida in gymnastics this year seems pretty inexcusable! The Gymn Dawgs should be ashamed of themselves for that one! However, the have been on top for the last 3-4 years and are easily the best gymnastics program in the country. Everyone is due a rebuilding year.
4. It doesn’t seem like the athletic program is as strong under Evans as it was under Dooley. To be clear: even with Dooley, UGA had a GOOD not great program. But it seemed like most of the sports were doing well during Dooley’s tenure. If football or men’s basketball were having down years, you could count on the other sports( usually Gymnastics, baseball,or women’s basketball) to pick up the slack with National Titles. But this year, it doesn’t seem like any team is particularly good.

Typical Florida losers on here. Yes UF has been successful in sports…no doubt. Question is what did you ‘awesome’ Gator people do to help your team? Get up, go get drunk and then go to Florida Field? Yep, you’ve got a whole lot to do w/ that success, don’t you? That’s why you people always use the word ‘we’.
It must be a lonely and sad life to have college sports be such a big factor in one’s life. UF people are becoming clones of typical Bama people.
It’s a bad day for you people if you lose a football game….geezz. If UGA loses a game, my feeling is so what? What do you want me to do about it?
A bad day for me was when I lost my parents or when one of my best friends 24 year old daughter has cancer.
I’m glad those football, basketball and baseball games are so important to you.

I can never get back that valuable 10 sec of my life back….what a waste!
UF is a fine institution and has a very good athletics program…as does UGA. UGA has had their run and fun against UF in the past and it was happen again. UF fans enjoy this run your on because all things come to an end…it’s just how it goes.

“2. The Gators will curb the offseason arrest problem: I’m not saying the occasional dumb mistake won’t happen. Most major programs must deal with arrests. But keep in mind that Florida had five high-profile arrests during a seven-month span from November 2008 to May 2009. The ugly streak led to the well-publicized 24 arrests in four years under Meyer at the time. So, there’s room for improvement. Florida has two arrests since December. If the Gators can get to the summer with a clean record, they are moving in the right direction.”
This is a quote from the Orlando Sentinel. Any of you (like BuLLdawg) who think these problems are particular to UGA, read closely,

Actually ugaclassof2004, this may shock some folks given the tone of this blog (which I have contributed to b/c of my frustration with UGA’s underachieving)….but UGA’s athletic program has won more national championships than UF. Someone else can research and get the totals. UF, however, has won more SEC championships in all sports combined than any other school. UGA might be like third on this list, behind Tennessee I believe. We need to be winning more SEC titles in men’s basketball, baseball, and football.

The solution is simple in football: they, i.e. Adams, his office manager/athletic director et al, can continue to hang on to Richt and continue to lose to FL around 80% of the time, or they can get off their collective ???es and find and then hire someone as good as FL’s coach and be able to compete. UG is not going to go 17 out of 25 as they did during the Dooley years, but, with UG’s resources, they ought to be able to win more then 3 or 4 within a 20 year timeperiod. The question is: do they and the fan base really give a damn? The answer remains to be seen. You can pretty well bet that the LSU, Alabama and Tennessee fans would.

What Else,
Your arrogance is astounding. You would think you actually had anything to do with UF’s success. It has already been established that UF has an outstanding athletic program. By that token, UGA is also a premier college athletic program with many, many outstanding athletes who can compete with Florida on any given day and have a better than average chance at success. Fans who have only an indirect connection to a college program and then proclaim on anonymous message boards that their teams or programs are far superior in every way to other fine programs, smacks or infantile penile envy. Please can we all just exercise a little perspective. The art of sportsmanship, is, I am sad to say, a dying art.

What do you expect from a school that has a fanbase who thinks Mark Richt is the “end all” in college football coaching. Some like to talk about his accomplishments and what he did 5 or 7 or 9 years ago, spouting off his overall stats while ignoring the more recent trends in order to prop him up. I’ll assure you this, Alabama and Florida fans aren’t all consumed about what THEY did 5 or 7 years ago and neither are their schools A.D.s. For them, it’s full steam ahead. UGA fans seem to be satisfied with not being elite, why is that??

Within The SEC there is no larger and more densely populated State than Florida. The volume of talent here is without comparison. In South Florida there is a large park on every other corner with organized football, baseball, soccer, basketball, lacross, etc. Ice hockey has grown incredibly big in this state. The diversity of sports reflects the diversity of the people here.
This is not a whine but a simple statement of my observations after having lived 40 years in Georgia and now 12 years in Florida.
But an obvious question comes to light. With all of this talent why isn’t U of M and Fla State at the top? It’s takes more than talent to win – great coaching is just as important. And many kids in Florida leave here to play at out of state programs. UF seems able to get the top in state talent and some great out of state talent too. Give ‘em credit. They’ve done a fine job recruiting, training and coaching for a long time.

I have to say that I agree with you. I can deal with losing to Florida if they are better than us( like they have been the last 2 years and during the mid 90’s), but losing to them during the Ron Zook years was pathetic. It just kind of seems like the Gators are in the Dawgs heads just like how the Gators used to nut up in games vs. the Dawgs in the 70’s and 80’s. In regards to football, I think a good place to start would be to run the ball right at the Gators. In all of UGA’s 3 wins over Florida, guys like Robert Edwards, Thomas Brown, and Knowshon Moreno had monster days on the ground. When the Dawgs commit to the running game ( with the right RB in there) mixed in with play action passing, they usually do well. Hell Washuan Ealey had something like 70 yards on the ground when Bobo would give him the ball, but then on the next series he’d go back to Richard Samuel who’d get stopped for 1 yard gains! Totally idiotic! And I think our O-line likes it when we run the ball. It makes them play more aggressive. But we have 2 former QB’s in Bobo and Richt who want to have a sexy passing attack, and it doesn’t work as well because they don’t have the personnel for it.
