Another football walk-on gets scholarship; Fox wants to play Tech earlier

For the third time this spring, Georgia coach Mark Richt had the pleasure of informing a walk-on player that he will go on scholarship.

Richt called senior Chad Gloer, a special-teams standout the past three seasons, into his office Wednesday to give him the good news.

“He was excited, and he felt like his mom and dad would be even more excited,” Richt said. “He was really looking forward to telling them. He said, ‘Coach, don’t be surprised if my mom gets in the car and drives over here and gives you a big hug.’”

Gloer, a cornerback from Fayetteville, joins linebacker Reuben Faloughi and long snapper Ty Frix as walk-ons who have received scholarships for the 2010-11 year.

Two scholarships became available when linebacker Montez Robinson and quarterback Zach Mettenberger were kicked off the team following arrests.

NCAA rules allow Division I-A football teams to have 85 players on scholarship each season.

—————-

Georgia and Georgia Tech are discussing moving their annual men’s basketball game from early January, which is when it has been played the past three seasons, to late November or early December.

“We’re working with Tech to move the game . . . to before the students leave campus [after fall semester],” Georgia coach Mark Fox said. “I think Tech is in agreement with that.”

The teams’ 2010-11 game will be played at Tech.

——————

  • Richt noted that the highlight film shown at a Bulldog Club meeting in Macon on Wednesday night was the same one shown there a year earlier. “This last season must have been so bad we couldn’t show last year’s highlights,” he said, “so we showed the highlights from the year before.”
  • Richt expects a much better 2010. “I don’t do jumping jacks like some people do when they’re excited,” he said, “but I can promise you, I’m as excited about this season as I have been for any one since I’ve been at Georgia. I think we’ve got the right stuff.”
  • As things stand now, every Georgia player is expected to be ready for the start of preseason practice in August. “It’s the first time I can remember any team I have ever coached where 100 percent of the players are due to be healthy enough to participate at the beginning of camp,” Richt said. “Which is huge.”
  • Richt reiterated that he is opposed to expanding the SEC, but “it’s going to be interesting.”

Congrats to the walk-on. Nice spin by Richt though, this might be the second season he has been the most excited for but we all know the 2008 Dawgs were suppose to go all the way and I am sure he was more then excited about that team along with the preseason #1 ranking.

I’m excited, too. I think the QB situation worked out as well as it could. We have a clear starter, who will get the reps and not worry about an early hook. A great athlete is going to shore up a thin receiving corps. When he is on the field, a trick play will always have to be guarded against. The offense will be true play-action, run-first and open the receivers. The defensive changes have breathed new life into the guys. Could be a really good year.

For years the GT/UGA basketball game was played early December which would be soon after the football game. The game was also played at the Omni and some of the best basketball games were played there. Maybe they should schedule it at the Dome. I think it would bring in big crowds.

Ealy is the key.

He stays healthy, we win a lot of games.

I am the least concerned of anyboy i know about our QB “situation”. I would be surprised if Murray throws 15 times a game.

I hate it for AJ Green, as he simply came to UGA at the wrong time, but has more than made the most of it. I wish we could have had a “Stafford-Green” like 1-2 punch for a few years. Unfortunately he wil be on his 3rd QB in as many seasons.

But I can see taking a page from that High School Offense over on the North Ave Ghetto, where we run the ball 10, 11 times in a row, then throw some play-action to an AJ Green long-route catching Defenses and Safeties napping. (*** Except we will run a pro-style running attack, not a trickery-gimmick run by most Pop Warner teams in the land ***)

This wil be a fun summer. My anticipation is bubbling, and it will only get greater as the August heat begins smacking us in the face. LOVE IT!!

Why on earth schedule the Tech/UGA game at a “neutral” site in Downtown Atlanta? If ANY Neutral site is used, the Gwinnett Arena would be best fit.

Keep the game home and home, and keep beating those stuck up Nerds year in and year out.

Bob Sacamano,
Yes, Richt’s excitement does sounds familiar, but I think that in a healthy program, the coach should be saying that every year. Any college coach who still loves his job and is working hard at it is going to approach every season thinking he can make it the best yet. If you don’t feel that way, then your name is Steve Spurrier and you only have half of your old passion for the job.

david,

you must be a Yankee. Do you not realize College Football is a year round sport? College Footbal pride is what keeps a lot of people ticking. If you have a problem with somebody being exciting about their team year in and year out no matter what the circumstances, I would recommend you move back to Brooklyn, where you can spend Spring Training deciding if the Mets or Yanks will be your passion for the year. Down here, our colors don’t run and our passion is only fueled by the rising and setting of the sun.

Wish I was excited as Richt – see us around 8-4 – not enough CB depth, FR. QB, not enough quality WR’s outside of Green, learning a new system on D – and Richt is still a good to great coach – he just doesn’t schedule the creampuffs every year like UF and UA, both of which have tougher schedule’s this year than normal. And now UF and UA have been killing us in recruiting….We should be better in 2011 than 2010, and maybe make a run at a championship in 2011 or 12 – just don’t see it this year, too many negatives (I did grow up listening to Munson and Dooley however).

The Tech/UGA BBall games were great in the Omni. I usually went with a group that included both Tech and UGA grads and we had fun messing with each other. The crowds were split pretty even and Tech had no significant advantage with the game so close to campus. If we only play once a year, then a nuetral site (Dome, Philips or Gwinn Arena)game makes alot of sense.

Herschel Talker: Those scholarships can’t be “saved.” These are 1-year scholarships for seniors; they will be automatically be freed up for the 2011 recruiting class. This is typical of any team that has scholarships vacated (short recruiting classes, transfers, dismissals, etc.) It’s no different impact on recruiting next year’s class than if they were recruited as scholarship players who were now in their senior year.

If you were meaning to imply that we should go pick up some high school kid leftover who hasn’t signed yet for the 2010 class–Jesus Christ, that would be dumb.

UGA will run, run, run. If Bobo does not get too greedy trying to out think a Spurrier or so and so coach, we should be fine with AJ and the TONS of very quality receivers that UGA has. Aaron’s ability to roll out and run or throw is one skill that CJ never had.

UGA has two and maybe THREE great NFL style fullbacks with the two kids returning ( Chapas and Muntzenmier ) and that SW Dekalb kid. This position will lead the charge. I am convinced that due to the position’s excellent results in the bowl vs TX A & M, the staff saw how we could churn up the field with our full backs.

With the fullback blocking, running it and catching it, UGA will be ahard to stop. This will not be expected this year but will emerge as a key. Fake it to Ealey or Caleb, then hand it to a fullback and go. FIRST DOWN or more !! Fake it to Ealey, then pump it and hit the fullback out on the flats.
Fake it to the fullbacks, then hand it to Waushan ……….TD!!! It will drive them crazy with our DEEP O line.

Guys, I would be more concerned with the defense than the offense. While we do have a better man heading up that part of the team, do we have the players, especially in the front seven, to be that much better on defense (I know we couldn’t be much worse than last year, but it still is possible)? Is Grantham going to have those guys ready to play this year, and playing disciplined at that? If we can eliminate 4 penalties a game, and play decent, not spectacular defense (making tackles on a consistent basis), I think we have a good team. If that happens, I can see 10 wins.

9-4 or 10-3 if they gel early on the “D” side of the ball. That’s still going to be contingent on them DRASTICALLY redcuing the penalties and turnover differential. If that continues (I suspect it will be better) then the results will be about the same or worse than last year.

Tired of that …”oh they will stack the line and stop are running game and we cannot pass.” This offense is going to smack some people in the mouth. The QB at BAMA was not the most skilled guy in the league. Teams stacked the line on them. They ran it down people’s throats and when they had to they threw the ball just fine. Watch Georgia do the same this year.

If we really start the running game more than the pass then expect more penalties. I will take that bet. I’m not doubting that UGAs backs have the skill but your big o-line is going to get plenty tired trying to pull that off against quality Ds. I think that is why CPJ likes to use smaller more athletic lineman. That has burned us against teams like LSU and Iowa and I think that is why you see bigger interior lineman being recruited now. I could be wrong we will have to wait and see. Plus I honestly don’t know this, but does UGA have the depth to do that on a continues basis?
