(Updated 6:45 p.m.)
MACON — Georgia backup quarterback Logan Gray, after considering the possibility of transferring to another school for the past few weeks, has decided to remain at UGA, where he’ll double as a wide receiver.
Gray informed coach Mark Richt of his decision by phone Wednesday morning.
Richt said in an interview before a Bulldog Club meeting here Wednesday night that Gray will have a dual role with the Bulldogs.
“He’s our second-team quarterback in my mind,” Richt said. “Logan has three years of knowledge in our system. He’s a very capable quarterback, so it’s nice to know that he’s there for that purpose.
“But he would like to spend some time at receiver. I think he feels like he might have a better chance of helping us there. So I’m fine with that, I really am.”
Gray, a junior, began considering the possibility of transferring after being listed as the No. 2 quarterback behind redshirt freshman Aaron Murray on Georgia’s depth chart at the end of spring practice.
Richt said Wednesday night that he doesn’t know yet how Gray’s practice and meetings time will be divided this fall between quarterback and receiver. Richt said he expects Gray to work mostly at receiver this summer as he tries to learn the position, adding that Gray “isn’t going to forget what to do at quarterback.”
Richt conceded that Gray’s interest in playing receiver limits his chances of beating out Murray for the starting quarterback job, although most observers felt those chances were slim anyway.
“If [Gray] is practicing at receiver all day long,” Richt said Wednesday night, “then there’s not a very good chance” of becoming the No. 1 quarterback.
He added: “The way things are shaping up, it looks like Murray is the guy, doesn’t it?”
Later, in his remarks to the Bulldog Club gathering, Richt said Murray “is certainly in the driver’s seat [and] most likely will be the starter.”
Gray’s thoughts of transferring caused much concern in Bulldog Nation because Gray and Murray are the only scholarship quarterbacks currently in the UGA program. Hutson Mason, a recruit from Marietta’s Lassiter High School, arrives this summer, and Richt said Mason can compete for the backup quarterback job “when he learns what to do.”
Gray said in a written statement that he decided to stay at UGA “because I truly do love being a Georgia Bulldog. I want to be a part of this team getting back to the SEC championship game and winning it.
“I’m also looking forward to getting some work at receiver and am going to work hard to make the best out of my opportunity at this position as well,” Gray said. ” I appreciate Coach Richt’s patience while I made this decision and his helpful advice. Now, I want to put all of this behind me and focus on getting to work on preparations for next season at UGA.”
Said Richt: “I’m really excited about Logan wanting to stay and for the reasons he is staying. When he called me [Wednesday] morning, I said: ‘Tell me why you decided to stay.’ He said, ‘I love Georgia; I love my teammates; I think we can win; I want to win; I want to be there.’
“Those were all the right reasons to stay.”

Hopefully he’ll settle in to the all important backup role and play some WR and punt return next year when Hutson Mason is ready to play. Gray is way too valuable right now to risk injury in case Murray goes down. Thank you Logan!

This is not for his best interest. He possibly could have started somewhere else at the QB position if that is what he wants to do. At UGA he will only be a situational quarter back at best. Murray will be the starter and get the chance to grow at the position. Gray could return punts, but Green is demanding they allow him to do it.
Sorry Logan, you don’t fit the system. And even if you did you never proved it.

What amazes me is that most people talk about his playing career in college. The most important thing that Logan should consider is his educational career. He has been at UGA for 3 years. Why would he transfer from UGA just to play more. If i were his father i would tell him to tough it out and get his degree.

Aaron IS injury prone
May 12th, 2010

Murray has a history of injuries. He pushes hard in practice and stuff happens. Good attitude he has.
The coaches will not initially allow him to scoot around the end in games ……….if he gets hurt, then they would be in deep doo doo with fans, etc. SO, with his arm and ability to move around the pocket, he can still move the chains. He will have to move out side to throw the ball. He is short and he will have to be on the move to keep the opposing D teams honest.
Logan has the ability to play well also. He is mature and will have a chance in the NFL as a punt returner or split end, etc. He could help UGA at QB in a pinch. Gulp …….I hope so.
Hutson Mason will come in this summer and he will get a real hard look. We also have the two young men that are walk on QBs. I think that one of them will emerge as a key back up about mid year. Both are big, strong men with arms and both have played in Georgia big boy HS ball. I have seen this happen over the years at UGA, although no SEC titles resulted over the last 50 years with any back ups that I recall.

I think this is great for UGA and Logan. UGA will have 2 quarterbacks familiar with the system, one could go down with injury, and it’s not written in stone that Murray will be the starter. Plus, Logan could be used also as a receiver. If he had transfered, he would have had to sit out a year, or go to a small school. It was Logan’s decision to make and we should support him either way.

This is odd, but I think we should let him be a regular at WR or another speed position, and still be the backup QB. The guy has good speed and maybe, just maybe, he can develop enough skills in a couple of years to get a shot to play at the next level in some position. Hines Ward played every position short of offensive line and was still able to start at QB when needed. Logan knows the offense already so he can pull it off.
Thanks for staying, Logan.

I think Logan is getting shafted by Richt. Is Aaron Murray really better than Logan ? Last year when Logan replaced Cox he wasn’t allowed very many passes, only mostly runs. I want the best QB on the field but how do WE know that its Murray ? It sure wasn’t Cox last year yet he was the starter. And for all you Ga Tech nerds out there, we should have had Stafford and Moreno last year on our team but even without them we spanked ya’ll.

Many things happen during the course of one football season, let alone two. Remember Daniel Cobb? Hot shot (over-rated) QB that signed with UGA a year before Quincy Carter quit baseball to play QB at UGA. When Carter was named starter before the first game of his freshman season, Cobb and Nate Hybl bailed and transferred to Auburn and Oklahoma respectively. Carter meanwhile, pulled his loser crap and was gone in a little over 2 years, leaving the STARTING job to a walk-on, Cory Phillips. Cobb and Hybl, each started for 1 year at their schools, but after they could have started at UGA had they been competitors and fought Carter for the job. Cobb’s Auburn career was a train wreck, highlighted by boo’s as a sixth year senior. Hybl did win a national title as a back-up but also was the subject of Sooners fans boo’s when he did not live up to their expectations.
Moral of the story… Stay where you are as long as you’re happy. Fight, COMPETE for playing time. Don’t be a loser and bail. Regardless of who is in front of you on the depth chart, you are 1 split-second away from being the starter. Look to DJ Shockley and not Daniel Cobb for a lesson…

This is great for UGA, and we can expect Logan to keep pushing Murray and both the benefit from the competition. It is never good when a person receives the position by default.
Logan is also a talented athlete, who can now let loose on kick returns and as a wide receiver. This is his Junior year so no sense in saving it. And, look for the end around pass this season. My bet is that Logan is a better passer on the run than any of the other wide receivers.
As for people worrying that UGA has no battle tested QBs. That is a concern at any position, but it is not unusual. No one seems to be concerned about Brantley down at FL, but he was 7 of 9 in SEC play last year. The good news for UGA is that the other ten offensive starters are back.

Where else was he going, as a starting QB? If, as Junior and you were rated behind a freshman, (actually 2 freshmans, if the other guy didn’t get n2 trouble), he was not going anywhere as a starting QB. Maybe in a Wing-T offense but not as a pro-style system. These GA high schools need to prepare athletes like this kid, who with the good QB training, would have made him ready for a real offensive scheme. What I here, he’s an outstanding athlete but no real pro-style QB experience. GA High School coaches, put away that garbage offense and help these kids out for the next level. GT is about see what happens in the coming years of D/C’s figuring it out.

Logan can be a great QB, when he’s not trying too hard to win the job. That’s all he was doing the few times he got thrown into a game when we were already down by 20. And he was trying to hard to impress everybody, he would be great if he stuck with what works, and being a mobile QB. He could be a WR, and we could do the WR screen to him, and let him launch it down field….come on, best play in flag football.

Hey naysayers – shut the hell up. Logan is fine. I think he evaluated the situation and knows what is best for him. Who cares if you leave and go play at a lesser school in a lesser conference. That does not get you into the pro’s. I think he is smart by playing receiver and they should use him as the kick off returner not AJ regardless of the upside there is more downside with AJ. Logan is an excellent athlete that we need to utilize just not necessarily at QB.

Transferring just because you lost out on a starting job would’ve been a bad move. Aaron Murray could end up not playing well or going down with an injury. You’re also not guaranteed of anything going to a D-II school since you’re the new guy there. Logan made a smart move and will probably get some PT somewhere.

Just discussing Logan Gray at lunch today with one of my Dawg pals. One thing we questioned is his role on the punt team. I think that training as a receiver gives him some different skills and maybe adds a new dimension to the “safe” formation. He might be given the green light to pick up a few yards if its wide open.

Tanya, last time I checked UGA had pretty high (and climbing) academic standards. It also has a top 15 public law school, an excellent vet program, a top-tier college of business, etc. etc. etc. On top of all of that, most UGA students have social skills. Therefore I’d say there’s a better chance it the technological geek without the social skills to market, sell and manage a business who is more likely to be doing “behind the scenes” work for one of us UGA graduates. The bottom line is that the schools have pretty similar academic qualifications but vastly different student bodies.

245 rushing a game? UGA got 377 yards rushing against Ga Tech, a top 10 team, ranked 30th against the run when UGA played them.
UGA can consistently get 300 yards rushing. Branden Smith gets over 12 yards a carry, there’s 100 there, Ealey gets 6 yards a carry, there’s a 120 there, King gets 5.5 ypc, there’s another 80 yards there. Not counting 2 mobile QB’s (Murray and Gray) who can pick up another 50 yards rushing.

No disrespect toward Murray, but Gray looked better in the G-Day game behind Mett. Some of you on this blog are down right cruel. CDAWG…I remember a few years back I watched a UGA spring game and thought Joe Cox did just as good if not better than Stafford. So, as soon as Stafford started to struggle, in my mind I would scream for Cox to come in. Fast forward a couple of years and now Cox is the starter…well I know now what the coaches obviously knew then. I too was impressed with Mettenberger’s spring game, but it’s just a snapshot, and Richt said it would have been Murray at the top of the depth chart for overall performance. I for one am finally convinced the coaches know more about who should start than me, so I’m just gonna pull for whoever wins the job.

This means Richt can redshirt Mason unless both Murray and Gray are injured. The following article excerpt likely would apply to the learning curve facing Hutson Mason. Mason’s high school head coach, Chip Lindsey was hired as QB coach at Troy this spring due to his knowledge of the offense.
“With the No. 209 overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, the Buffalo Bills have selected Troy quarterback Levi Brown.”
“Brown will have a severe learning curve heading to the NFL, as he worked out of a spread offense at Troy. He’s got to learn how to operate from under center, and reading defenses will be an early issue for him…”

Should be a lesson for all you QB’s signing with UGA, you better figure out what other position you would like to play. When Logan signed, he was going to be the next star to lead to a NC. Now it is Aaron Murry, next it will be Mason, then it will be LeMay. Which of these QB’s who have not played one snap of college football will become the next WR, DB or bench warmer?

murray county mystic- Your post is funny and not well thought out. Have you ever played an organized sport or better yet, have you ever been recrutied by a school to get an education and or play a sport? Probably not! It was Logan Gray’s choice to accept a scholarship from UGA, he went there knowing he would have to compete for a starting QB job. Do you know what all it entails to transfer from one school to another, and especially for an athlete? Nope didn’t think so. From making sure your credit hours tranfer in, to meeting new friends, to a system that you’ve never ran, to coaches and players you’ve never met. Logan did the best thing for himself and not for Mark Richt. Since you and I were never in their meetings we have zero idea what was discussed. So you and your classless friends who have and will continue to post classless comments need to get your facts straight before you press submit.
As for name callling, it just shows how classless you are!

Ha Ha, I love Gatorbait, how you said some FOOL, thought the Dogs could be 9-0 after the Florida game. Well its true they could and Florida could be 6-3 after that game. Funny how you look past the one word in the post (COULD).

jasont13…if Logan stayed so he could be with his friends, he doesn’t have what it takes to be a SEC qb anyways. Is 13 your age? Reason being, your post made little sense. Mr. Gray should have never went to Athens; he’s a spread qb in some Pop Warner offense being run by Bobo and the “preacher”. Should have left when he got the playbook. Now, his only options are the Southern Conference (if he want’s to play relevent football; for the first time since high school), or stay to hold the clipboard and be an unpaid assistant to the “preacher”. Bet all his buddies back in Missouri can’t wait to get some of the $$$ windfall from his clipboard endorsement contract…idiot

I said it once and I’ll say it again. For you people thinking that Murray is injury prone, I’ve got news for you. He is not. He’s had the time to heal from the HS injury he had in which he came back well before hand in the State Championship game and won it. He is a tough, hard nosed kid. In addition, 6′1″ is not short. I hope people keep selling Murray short(no pun intended). I had a chance to see him here in Tampa and personally, I can’t wait to see him “Tween the Hedges” leading this team. Offense is not my worry, it’s the defense. We will score, but will we keep the other team from scoring?
As for Logan, I’m stoked that he is staying and it would behoove CMR to get him playing time at QB when possible. I think he would be a great receiver as well. He already knows the routes (how about a little end around, stop to throw a bomb to AJ for a TD. Sure gives you that extra threat at receiver)
Go Dawgs!

I can’t envision Mark Richt putting Logan Gray on the field while he is the only backup with knowledge of the offense. Maybe later in the year when one of the walk-ons or Mason has progressed sufficiently.

I’m not trying to sound racist but if a white kid is returning punts in the SEC he obviously must have good hands and definately have speed. That could turn out to be great as a WR. The kid just wants to play. Leave it at that.

Getting to play matters. Sure a UGA degree is good but 20 years down the road his playing time will be important too. Twenty years down the road where he was educated isn’t all that important.

Doesn’t matter. He will only be sticking around for two more years to watch the Jackets run over his team.

Whew…the Logan Gray issue had me worried. UGA continues to be a bonafied 2nd tier SEC team with or with out Logan Gray. Logan can’t play QB?? Please look at his numbers during the spring vs. that “new and improved” defense. Logan did good against them and he is not the player UGA will face this year at the QB position. We have no depth at QB and we have a defense that is all talk. I predict UGA will give up an average of 28+ points to the SEC teams we play. I hope we can score a bunch…
