Quarterback Gray will stay at UGA, double as a wide receiver (UPDATED)

(Updated 6:45 p.m.)

MACON — Georgia backup quarterback Logan Gray, after considering the possibility of transferring to another school for the past few weeks, has decided to remain at UGA, where he’ll double as a wide receiver.

Gray informed coach Mark Richt of his decision by phone Wednesday morning.

Richt said in an interview before a Bulldog Club meeting here Wednesday night that Gray will have a dual role with the Bulldogs.

“He’s our second-team quarterback in my mind,” Richt said. “Logan has three years of knowledge in our system. He’s a very capable quarterback, so it’s nice to know that he’s there for that purpose.

“But he would like to spend some time at receiver. I think he feels like he might have a better chance of helping us there. So I’m fine with that, I really am.”

Gray, a junior, began considering the possibility of transferring after being listed as the No. 2 quarterback behind redshirt freshman Aaron Murray on Georgia’s depth chart at the end of spring practice.

Richt said Wednesday night that he doesn’t know yet how Gray’s practice and meetings time will be divided this fall between quarterback and receiver. Richt said he expects Gray to work mostly at receiver this summer as he tries to learn the position, adding that Gray “isn’t going to forget what to do at quarterback.”

Richt conceded that Gray’s interest in playing receiver limits his chances of beating out Murray for the starting quarterback job, although most observers felt those chances were slim anyway.

“If [Gray] is practicing at receiver all day long,” Richt said Wednesday night, “then there’s not a very good chance” of becoming the No. 1 quarterback.

He added:  “The way things are shaping up, it looks like Murray is the guy, doesn’t it?”

Later, in his remarks to the Bulldog Club gathering, Richt said Murray “is certainly in the driver’s seat [and] most  likely will be the starter.”

Gray’s thoughts of transferring caused much concern in Bulldog Nation because Gray and Murray are the only scholarship quarterbacks currently in the UGA program. Hutson Mason, a recruit from Marietta’s Lassiter High School, arrives this summer, and Richt said Mason can compete for the backup quarterback job “when he learns what to do.”

Gray said in a written statement that he decided to stay at UGA “because I truly do love being a Georgia Bulldog. I want to be a part of this team getting back to the SEC championship game and winning it.

“I’m also looking forward to getting some work at receiver and am going to work hard to make the best out of my opportunity at this position as well,” Gray said. ” I appreciate Coach Richt’s patience while I made this decision and his helpful advice. Now, I want to put all of this behind me and focus on getting to work on preparations for next season at UGA.”

Said Richt: “I’m really excited about Logan wanting to stay and for the reasons he is staying. When he called me [Wednesday] morning, I said: ‘Tell me why you decided to stay.’ He said, ‘I love Georgia; I love my teammates; I think we can win; I want to win; I want to be there.’

“Those were all the right reasons to stay.”

Glad to see he decided to stay. Hopefully, he won’t be needed as the back-up QB and can focus on the WR position so he can get some playing time. Congrats, Dawgs and see ya in J’ville!

I’m thinking gray of a reverse to gray with a downfield pass to AJ. This might create the option for a few more trick plays and some razzle dazzle, maybe even a little touch of the wildcat offense. Pleased to hear he decided to stay.

Transferring just because you lost out on a starting job would’ve been a bad move. Aaron Murray could end up not playing well or going down with an injury. You’re also not guaranteed of anything going to a D-II school since you’re the new guy there. Logan made a smart move and will probably get some PT somewhere.

Shame on everyone who was bashing him. We should be lucky to have a player with this attitude….there are not many.

I hope Bobo installs some packages for him. Of course, unpredictable packages. We need to get creative like other teams.

Logan just perched himself atop the leader pole. It takes some guts to stand in line as long as he has and decide what’s best for him is also best for the team. My hat is off to Logan Gray. He should earn some serious playing time no matter the position.

Just discussing Logan Gray at lunch today with one of my Dawg pals. One thing we questioned is his role on the punt team. I think that training as a receiver gives him some different skills and maybe adds a new dimension to the “safe” formation. He might be given the green light to pick up a few yards if its wide open.

This is good news for the Dawgs. It means that when Murray is arrested, Richt can send in Grey as a back-up.

Very good news indeed for the felonious Dawgs.

The more good news I hear about these 3 Georgia QB’s, the more I like Georgia’s chance to be 9-0 after the Florida game. This offense is going to put up a LOT of yards, and score a TON of points.

All of you UGA fans need to get your heads out of the sand and start worrying about the biggest problem at UGA. At the rate your players are being arrested, you’ll be lucky to have a football team by this fall.

By the way, neither Murray or Grey is an SEC-caliber quarterback. Get used to seeing them with their azzes on the turf.

I’m thinking 40 points a game average, and over 450 yards of offense on the average. Looking at 225 rushing, 225 passing. 10 points a quarter.

If I were Logan, I would xfer to Furman, Appalachian St., or to some other CFS (or whatever that division calls itself), assuming I would have the opportunity to play every Saturday against good competition (although not as good every Sat. as the SEC). I would form close relationships with my teammates and with others from the general population, and have great memories of those Saturdays on the gridiron. Matter of fact, I would xfer to Duke, assuming they wanted me and I could play there Why not get the best free education available. Logan, you’d better start thinking smart(ly).

Tanya, last time I checked UGA had pretty high (and climbing) academic standards. It also has a top 15 public law school, an excellent vet program, a top-tier college of business, etc. etc. etc. On top of all of that, most UGA students have social skills. Therefore I’d say there’s a better chance it the technological geek without the social skills to market, sell and manage a business who is more likely to be doing “behind the scenes” work for one of us UGA graduates. The bottom line is that the schools have pretty similar academic qualifications but vastly different student bodies.

450 yards a game isn’t unreasonable, UGA’s averaging 200 passing and 245 rushing over the last 3 games, so already there. Just pick up where things left off. No one on the schedule is good enough to stop UGA.

Kudos for choosing to stay. The path least traveled is the hardest path since it would have been easy to leave and go give it a try somewhere else.

ain’t it nice to have some good news coming out about UGA football in the off-season?

Congratulations to coach Richt as well for handling this with class.

245 rushing a game? UGA got 377 yards rushing against Ga Tech, a top 10 team, ranked 30th against the run when UGA played them.

UGA can consistently get 300 yards rushing. Branden Smith gets over 12 yards a carry, there’s 100 there, Ealey gets 6 yards a carry, there’s a 120 there, King gets 5.5 ypc, there’s another 80 yards there. Not counting 2 mobile QB’s (Murray and Gray) who can pick up another 50 yards rushing.

Stinger,

you are a first rate moron.

Why pretend you know anything about football?

you don’t.

We have 10 starters returning and we know for sure(unlike last year) who our running backs are going to be and they are both proven. Seems like they ran for over 200 yards against some podunk ACC school toward the end of last year…………….

Tanya you moron,

I sign the paychecks. In my days dealing with architects and construction types, it was a constant battle to tell those “Tech grads” that there is a little thing called a budget on all projects. They didn’t care about that. They just wanted to design something and let the star-trek mind set run the show.

The UGA grad(me) had to introduce some reality.

Kinda like our football team introducing reality to Tech’s team every November.

No disrespect toward Murray, but Gray looked better in the G-Day game behind Mett. Some of you on this blog are down right cruel. Gray went in last year and he struggled as most QB’s would when they are thrown on the field for the first time. Was Gray REALLY given an opportunity? I am sure that Murray is a heck of a kid but I am not sold on him at QB. If Mett repents for his sins could we not give him one more chance?

CDAWG…I remember a few years back I watched a UGA spring game and thought Joe Cox did just as good if not better than Stafford. So, as soon as Stafford started to struggle, in my mind I would scream for Cox to come in. Fast forward a couple of years and now Cox is the starter…well I know now what the coaches obviously knew then. I too was impressed with Mettenberger’s spring game, but it’s just a snapshot, and Richt said it would have been Murray at the top of the depth chart for overall performance. I for one am finally convinced the coaches know more about who should start than me, so I’m just gonna pull for whoever wins the job.
