Richt rewards walk-on with scholarship

Georgia coach Mark Richt rewarded Ty Frix for a job well done Monday, putting the walk-on long snapper on scholarship.

Frix took over as Georgia’s snapper on punts, field goals and extra points last season and consistently drew praise from both punter Drew Butler and placekicker Blair Walsh.

Ty Frix

Ty Frix

Frix, who will be a redshirt sophomore in the fall, is a Biomedical Engineering major and a former valedictorian at Calhoun High School. He is a second-generation Georgia long snapper. His father, Dr. Mitch Frix, was the “starting” snapper on the Bulldogs’ SEC championship teams in 1981 and 1982.

Ty Frix is the second walk-on to be awarded a scholarship by Richt this spring, following linebacker Reuben Faloughi. Richt recently said that giving a scholarship to a walk-on is one of the most enjoyable parts of his job.

“Ty has done an outstanding job with all our snapping duties,” Richt said in a statement Monday. “He’s been an instrumental part of one of the top punt and field goal/extra point teams in the country. Ty is well deserving, and we’re very pleased to award him the scholarship.”

Butler won the Ray Guy Award as college football’s top punter last season, and Walsh was one of three finalists for the Lou Groza Award as the top placekicker.

Speaking as an educator and someone who knows this family well, you could not find a more deserving young man with outstanding work ethic, character, and values. Yes….he has HOPE. However, if you actually look into HOPE, you will find that much is not covered. Yes, his father is a doctor. He worked harder than most can imagine for much of his life to earn that degree and does not live the “lavish” life that some may suspect. He volunteers his time for students athletes from the north georgia area and is always ready and willing to give whenever someone is in need. Ty’s scholarship is for a job well done by the student athlete….not based upon the finances of his family. To be a walk on starter and keep a near 4.0 in such a challenging degree…that deserves recognition! We are proud of you Ty!! Congrats!!!

Thank God we gave this to the long snapper from Calhoun instead of the QB from Calhoun who could’ve insured we got the best player in the state, Da’Rick Rogers.

Maybe my mind will change but as a relatively successful alum, I feel it would be the best thing I could do for the university if I kept them from having to offer my son a scholarship by paying his tuition

As an UGA grad, I am disgusted by the dimwitted and just plain stupid comments of people who profess to know something about UGA football and could not coach a first grade flag football team.

It seems like a lot of folks on here look at football the same way Obama looks at the wealthy taxpayers of this country. That somehow they should be punished for their success. Why should Frix not get a scholarship just because his dad is a doctor? Is he less deserving because of his financial condition? The kid has worked his rear end off and deserves what he got. So what if his dad can afford the tuition. Ty earned it. Hard hard work needs to be rewarded and fortunately Richt saw that and gave the kid his due.

Dumba$$es, please keep your unthoughtout politics off here. Biomedical engineering performs such work as mimicking body movements for artificial limbs, engineering equipment to perform as organs (i.e.,Artificial heart, kidney, liver, lung etc.)including artificial biochemical events such as performed by pancreas and a few other odd jobs in medicine that those of limited imagination can’t entertain. Perhaps if we head toward sexual relevance in Biomedical Engineering….naah, you wouldn’t understand that either. Perhaps he may do most Georgia fans a service by perfecting a structure that prevents some of you from placing your head up your a$$. We could label it the Long-Snapper Douche Bag Alleviator.

Frix- your contribution to this team will be more than long snapping. Your academic average will be appreciated by all fans for its relevance toward keeping us out of the NCAA outhouse in the future. Many will only slowly appreciate what that does for the entire team for our soon-to-be NC years. By the way, you will find that the retention of bad snap memories is pretty poor in this group, thank God. But what the heck, you already know that don’t you? Your team has been quite instrumental in keeping you calm for the big ones and you will see more of those heart-seizing moments in the next 2 yrs. Good luck and remember that the fans are cheering for you every moment.

I quote:

“Technically, Faloughi takes Top 10 in the nation recruit at his position Montez Robinson’s scholarship lost for assualt on a little girl; and now we give Top 10 in the nation quarterback Zach Mettenberger’s scholarship lost for yet another assault, this one sexual, of a little girl to a snapper.”

We’ve recruited 1 cornerback a year for 5 years now. And, several of those are questionable at their position. We have not done well at cornerback for some time, as a direct result.

We have 1 wide receiver on the team, and no one behind him on the Depth Chart either.

We have 2 Fullbacks both Redshirt Seniors and none recruited since. Zero.

We are in need of Safeties. We moved Nick Williams from linebacker to try to fill the wholes here.

We have 2 freshman quarterbacks and 1 guy who has been in the system for 4 years now today who has thrown a grand total of 0 Touchdown Passes and 2 Interceptions.

We have 4 Tight Ends all of whom could start for other schools.

We have 12 linebackers on scholarship.

We have 14 offensive linemen on scholarship.

We had to rip the Redshirt off the # 11 Running Back in the naiton last year in the 3rd quarter of the 5th game. Presumably, that means that we needed a Running Back, right ?

We have not been getting pressure from the edge in years, and our personnel may not be the best possible yet to have this position either.

It just looks to me like we have no plan whatsoever for how we give out scholarships.

So, Dr. Frix’s son Ty now gets a scholarship from Coach Richt. To be long snapper. Which he was going to do anyway.

It is really nice that such an honor can be bestowed upon such an undeserving family for a player who already was going to be here no matter what. We are providing scholarships to the wrong people at the wrong positions for years in the Coach Richt Era.

Why should this be any different.

BuLLdawg

Coach Richt is such a nice guy, but this is just yet another example of being a nice guy and his recruiting, staff especially for offense, having no clue what the teams’ needs are.

We hit the state of Georgia hard recently in recruiting, and had an absolutely horrible year in recruiting especially in-state on Offense in the recruiting class just signed.

Couldn’t this scholarship have been used for a tailback, a wide receiver, a quarterback, a fullback.

Instead of being a nice guy to a family who does not begin to need this scholarship for a player who absolutely (1) does not need the scholarship and (2) does not affect the recruiting at all since he was going to be here no matter what, what we should have done with all these holes on the Offense left by our horrid recruiting class of 2010 on Offense, especially in state, is to give it to Todd Grantham to go get him some pressure from the edge, a safety, or a cornerback.

Are we trying to prove that we are good guys here ?

Or, trying to use the only tool we have to get great players in here, scholarships at key positions of need, in here in recruiting especially on offense and especially in this state where the entire SEC gets all their Offensive Recruits.

Do you think we have lost 10 games of the last 20 over the last 4 years against just SEC East teams, because we have a clue what we are doing with scholarship offers ?

The entire Coach Richt Era of 9 years, I have hated this entire Coach Richt coaching staff, except for Coach Richt. And, this is the kind of move he makes with the 1 damn tool he has to do something about 14 losses the last 4 years.

We give scholarships out because it is the Christian thing to do. That should not and cannot be the overriding criteria.

Sometimes, you have to be tough. I am sure that Ty nor Dr. Frix ever thought that Coach Richt would make this move. He counts on our NCAA Graduation Rate, which is 9th in The SEC out 12 schools for football, being on the team. He did not have to get this scholarship sorely needed at a host of positions on offense. And, if we could not determine who to give it to on Offense, we should have just handed it to Todd Grantham and let him decide.

You have got to be tough Coach Richt. This buys us NOTHING in recruiting. Scholarships are ALL YOU HAVE to get players in here to turn this football program around. Unless of course you are satisfied with 14 losses the last 4 years when we fired Jim Donnan for having 13 losses here his last 4 years.

Bad move Coach Richt.

For the wrong player at the wrong position. We trade in 2 scholarships both to Top 10 players at their position in the country and give them to 2 walk-ons. And, this walk-on was absolutely going to be here no matter what and has zero need of it financially.

Wrong decision for the wrong player at the wrong position for the wrong reason.

That clear enough for you ?

It is not how I say it, it is what I say.

And, I say that I am not in the least satisfied in 14-game seasons nowadays to go again this season 9-4 or 10-3. And, having not even sniffed an SEC East Championship since 2005 because since that time, we have gone only 10-10 vs The SEC East. Don’t bother looking at what our SEC East record is over the last 5 years once we play South Carolina on the road at night with 2 freshmen quarterbacks when the last 2 seasons Coach Richt and Mike Bobo prepared us 0 quarterbacks, we lost 5 games and 4 games those seasons.

Now, here we are yet again with no QB ready and facing a LOSING RECORD over the last 5 years against SEC East teams after we leave South Carolina in Game 2.

And, this is why you want me ousted.

Because you cannot stand it how absolutely correct I am in saying Coach Richt did this because it is the Christian thing to do.

Not because it makes any sense whatsoever on ANY other level.

I am so glad that the brave few have such a positive outlook on 14 losses the last 4 years and 10-10 vs SEC East teams alone. You do not care for not how I say it, but that I say it that you are satisfied and I am not.

Guess what ?

I am not the only 1.

Watch.

Listen.

In the polls so far, we are ranked no higher than just barely in the Top 25, and face South Carolina with a possible losing record over the last 5 years in Game 2 on the road at night with a freshman quarterback. On the average for the last 4 years, we have gone 1-3 vs Florida, 1-3 vs the vols (really bad vols teams 3 of which were not ranked in the Top 25 of the Final AP Polls), 2-2 vs KY loss to KY team not ranked in the Top 25 of the Final AP Poll and lost to 2 not ranked in the Top 25 Final AP Polls teams from South Carolina and Vandie. We accomplished this feat of 10-10 vs SEC East teams averaging over these last 4 years # 96 NCAA every year in Penalties, 21 fumbles a year for 4 years in a row and averaging 14 interceptions a year for 4 years in a row.

You ain’t in charge. We are. And, don’t forget the reason why in the middle of recruiting season, we make this grievous error is because we have had 39 Arrests / Suspensions in just the last 3 years alone according to David Hale of macon.com and therefore had to throw 3 off the team since Spring Practice.

I am NOT satisfied. There, does it sound like you brave 2 are in charge ? I don’t look ousted to me.

Or to ANY of the rest of us not satisfied with what is going on in Athens since 2005. This is 2010.

We are no different from the Atlanta Hawks the entire 9 Year Coach Richt Era. Poorly coached. Stock-piled at some positions, like the Hawks have 5 small forwards 6 really, no point guard no center no strong forward and no shooting guard – not top-notch at any of those other 4 positions. And, at other positions, the Atlanta Hawks are just like UGA the last 4 years, 5 now in a row this season in football. We have all our Scholarships tied up at Tight End, Linebacker and the Offensive Line. We have NO wide receiver after this season, NO fullback after this season, 1 running back Caleb King whom they tell us is the best ever who has in all his years here had MORE GAMES of 1-yard rushing or LESS than he has had games of more than 1-yard rushing, and we have 2 freshmen quarterbacks 1 of whom no one gives any hope and the other who is very small, short, not fast at all at 4.7 in the 40-yard dash in The SEC where defensive linemen are faster than that who threw the most interceptions and fewest touchdown passes in all 3 scrimmages who did not complete a single deeper type pass of the 5 all overthrows in the G-Day Game.

No difference between the Atlanta Hawks and The Football Georgia Bulldogs.

Oh, the Hawks made into the 2nd round of the Play-offs.

They lost in 4 games by MORE than 25 points a game.

The Bulldogs average 10-win seasons in 14-game seasons nowadays and haven’t even sniffed The SEC East since 2005 at 10-10 vs SEC East since.

Maybe we should conclude RED DOG 77 that the Atlanta Hawks are great ?

Why does it always come back to the “you don’t know anything about football” argument? It doesn’t take Nick Saban to figure out that Long Snappers aren’t recruited for scholarships. I think everyone knows and agrees on that. The issue at hand isn’t this kid’s nor is the issue his fault. It lies with Richt and the fact that we routinely lose kids because we either a) don’t have scholarships (best player in the state Omar Hunter to Florida becaue we didn’t have one), b) we don’t “play ball” (best player in the state Da’Rick Rogers to UT because we told Nash Nance we weren’t recruiting a QB then signed Hutson Mason) or c)the ones we give them to get in trouble and they end up going to a special teamer (this example).

As for the redistribution of wealth/Obama argument, I agree doctors are intelligent and educated. Lord knows they aren’t going to let anyone they ever encounter forget that they are an MD by slinging “Dr” out before they say their name or “MD” at the end of their signature. But most plan well and make decent money. I would think someone who had PLAYED at UGA would at least consider covering their kid’s tuition for the good of the team, not because Obama told him to or someone on here said so.
