Dogs No. 10 in spring attendance … Barbara Dooley at Vols event … Chapas, Durham, Atkins graduate Saturday

Georgia ranked No. 10 in the nation in attendance for its spring football game, according to figures compiled by Sports Business Daily.

Alabama again had the largest spring-game crowd (91,312), followed by Nebraska (77,936), Ohio State (65,223), Auburn (63,217), Penn State (55,000), Florida (51,500), Florida State (51,000), Texas (44,000), Virginia Tech (41,000) and Georgia (38,472).

Also topping 30,000 in spring-game attendance: Tennessee, Michigan, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Arkansas and Michigan State.

A full chart of the attendance for BCS schools’ spring games (except for a few on which attendance was unavailable) can be found  here.

—————

According to this report in the Knoxville News Sentinel, Barbara Dooley was in attendance — and in orange — at Wednesday night’s Atlanta stop of Tennessee’s Big Orange Caravan.

“There is no way I can come into this state without my mother finding me,” Tennessee football coach Derek Dooley told the audience.  “I never knew how good she looked in orange. All these years she’s been wearing the wrong color.”

Dooley — Derek, not Barbara — also talked about the importance to the Vols of recruiting in Georgia, according to the News Sentinel report.  “We started it on signing day,” he said, “and we’re going to keep pushing it to bleed orange right into this state for a long time.”

—————–

Fullback Shaun Chapas and wide receiver Kris Durham will play their final football season at Georgia this fall with their college degrees already earned.

Chapas and Durham will graduate at Georgia’s spring commencement ceremonies in Sanford Stadium on Saturday evening.

Chapas is a marketing major and Durham a middle-school education major.  They will take graduate courses while completing their football eligibility in the fall.

In addition to current players Chapas and Durham, 10 former UGA football players will get their degrees Saturday. Among them:  defensive tackle Geno Atkins, a recent fourth-round draft pick of the Cincinnati Bengals.

Next two years will be HUGE for Richt and program. Two straight years of mediocrity has caused some fans ( i use that term carefully) to take a wait and see attitude. While Florida and Bama have taken their program to new heights, Dawgs have fumbled around, no pun intended.
You can’t win big time by giving up 30+ points on a regular basis and allow teams to drive the field in a tight game late and beat you. Sadly, Under Martinez, that was our MO. Richt finally had seen enough and brought in a New defensive staff. I’m impressed so far with the intensity and effort, but we’ll see. Georgia has appeared to turned up recruiting a notch or two……..Oh course, Two storied programs along with us have been struggling, Auburn and Tennessee. Gonna be interesting to see who of the three will rise and give Florida and Bama a battle.

Not sure how they calculated the attendance but from what i saw at gday there was closer i say to 40,000 plus, but not a scientific calculation, just from an estimate of areas that were full and even the scattered here and there…But still a great turnout considering last season and all of the negative issues that fair or unfair attached to the program…

Too bad attendance doesn’t equate to coaching ability. We likely have a top 7 or 8 program, we recruit in the top 5 in most years, yet we lose to the likes of Ky and UT last year!!! We come out #1 in the nation and lose to two a little better than average teams (Bama and GT) and took our yearly whooping in Jacksonville.

We need a top 10 coach instead of top 40 if we truly plan on challenging at the national level.

Nothing against UGA, but you cannot read this number too much man.

In Alabama, you don’t have a major sport franchise. The thing going there is BAMA and Auburn.

Tech is in a major city, lots of distractions, it’s just hard to attract too many people to thing called a game.

Athens is a city without even a major highway. Anything can be an attraction.

Before the internet age, everybody reads newspaper or magazines…

Tech is like in the internet age. BAMA/Auburn/UGA is like in the pre-internet age.

Nothing against you guys, that’s just what it is. You don’t have much else to do, sports become your life.

I think Derek Dooley is still a bit of an enigma even to those people at Tennessee. Seemed coming in that he was going to restore the respect for the traditions and he has certainly said all the right things. But he has had some issues with the press as he has taken a bit of a Saban like approach and was “MIA” press wise for a spell. Then there was a “misunderstanding” regarding the access for the former players that created a bit of a stir. And of course, the sudden departure of Nick Stephens and the certain departure of Bryce Brown. But the biggest thing was his stance on the Darren Myles arrest in which many were surprised that some kind of suspension wasn’t handed down and apparently there will be no playing time missed. You know, the old “internal” handling thing. With some of the past problems in K-Ville, you’ve got to wonder if that sent the right message. And it will be really interesting to see if they officially offer troubled Zack Mettenberg because of their desperate QB situation. Stay in your seats, this could be a very long, bumpy ride for the Vols.

Guys, a spring game’s attendance (in some ways) sways some recruits. Bama’s #’s are impressive, but really anything over 30k shows you have a loyal, die hard fan base.

UGA averaged 92,746 PEOPLE in the stands last year (compacity), that is a positve as well.

Personally, LSU has the best story, before the Florida game last year, the atmosphere in Tiger Stadium swayed, I believe, 3 players to sign right then and there.

My point is that all fan bases have certain aspects of loyalty which shine through and make them look great……except the ACC….ESP Tech haha

Tide Rising

May 6th, 2010

Getting paid,

That is correct. The story about the LSU fan base exciting the recruits before the game with Florida is the same reason that Alabama fans turn out en mass for the spring game. As a fan base we understand the importance of recruiting and so we pack the house as a way of impressing the recruits. And every year some of the recruits, especially some of the out-of-state recruits, are so impressed with the overall support of the program that they just go ahead and commit that weekend.

Meanwhile you’ll always have some weak minded people who will derisively say there’s nothing else to do in Alabama. They just trot out that tired old line for 2 reasons: 1) because their program doesn’t have the kind of fan support we have and 2) they’re just too stupid to come up with something more original than saying there’s nothing else to do.

77,000 fans showed up in Lincoln, NE, 90,000 also showed up in Ohio. Going by the logic of some of the morons here they must all be either rednecks or there is nothing to do in a state like Ohio.

Not too worried about Derek Dooley at Tennessee. I personally do not think he will last more than five seasons. His compeition annually will be too much for him to overcome. I don’t see him ever beating Meyer, and probably not Saban. Richt certainly has the upper hand as long as he keeps upgrading his staff when needed and recruits well. Spurrier versus Dooley is a 50/50 proposition meaning Spurrier will win a lot more than he has so far versus UT.

LMAO……Barbara Dooley wearing the BIG ORANGE in Atlanta!!! Had Vince been there he would have worn the orange too. Face it Mutts…..your team is going down the drain. UT / Dooley will own you for years to come. Maybe if CMR stopped spending so much time in the tanning booth, UGA could do better. Also he could cut out doing all those Carpets of Dalton commercials. I just hope you have enough players out of jail or at least on probation to start the season! Rocky Top is coming to Athens in October and it won’t be pretty for UGA!!!

I was at that game and it was pretty much what you expected…90K screaming drunk Cajuns. I was just glad to get outta there alive. Those people sure aren’t too fond of orange and blue! But I’ll go again ’cause it’s what makes college football the incredible spectacle that it is.

“Lisa, you might be correct on FL having our number for a LONG time”

Excuse me italian_29, what in the hell are you talking about MIGHT BE CORRECT FL having our number for LONG time ? We have LOST to Florida 3 of the last 4 games, LOST to the vols 3 of the last 4 games and LOST to Kentucky 2 of the last 4 games, along with a loss to South Carolina and Vanderbilt.

The SEC East has been kicking our butts the last 4 years, all of them.

And, Florida, Alabama and LSU have Won the Last 5 National Championships in a Row.

While we are 2-7 vs. Florida in the Coach Richt Era.

Lisa “MIGHT BE CORRECT” italian_29 ? italian_29, Lisa IS correct, not might be.

Right ?

Me,

I’m a Bama fan but I went to the earthquake game in 88 with one of my best friends an AU fan. We hooked up with 2 LSU hotties at the beach and were going back to red stick to see them and also for the AU-LSU game. Had one of the best weekends of my life and yes the LSU fans love to party.

Pretty funny the Dooley’s wearing orange, after what Michael F. Adam$ did to them. This is the 1st coach in the history of Tennessee football, who was not a total friqin’ joke. Maybe now for the 1st time since 2001, the vols can actually be ranked AHEAD of UGA in the Final AP Poll. He just doesn’t fit in there with the yahoos in Tennessee, but I wish him the best of luck.

I know UT leads the series and I know UT won big last year in Knoxville, but I simply can’t respect a program that doesn’t get the majority of its players from its home state. There are many things the help get top level talent to UT. At the same time, a program that hasn’t had a starting QB from its own state since 1986 says a lot about the program and the state in general.

Sure, there is plenty to do in Bama… Like your cousin… The spring games are nothing more than a nice day at the stadium. First of all, who cares how many people show up to the SPRING SCRIMMAGE. I was at UGA’s, but don’t see attendance for these things as any kind of barometer for anything. Don’t think golf had anything to do with anything, that is what a DVR is for.

To “The most interesting man alive”, no one was dissappointed in Murray’s performance. Any one that knows anything about what they are talking about anyways. Murray had a dropped pass by Charles, that if he caught he would still be running. There was a miscommunication with Green on a deep ball, but the ball thrown was a laser. He also led the offense down the field in the 2 minute offense, where in a game situation they would have kicked a field goal, but went for it on 4th down. But I guess for those of us who just sit and look at numbers instead of body of work, his performance could have appeared sub par. As far as decision making and leadership ability, Murray is 1000 times better than Mettenberger or Gray ever will be. He is more accurate than either of the other 2, and has just as strong a arm as Mettenberger. And in case you missed it, he was also recognized as having the second best Elite 11 QB Camp performance in the history of the camp, behind Stafford. Sure he may only be 6′ tall, but look at who just won the Superbowl.

Things you’ll never see at UGA. Kiante Tripp at left tackle. Cordy Glenn at left guard, chris Burnette at center, bean anderson at right guard and josh Davis at right tackle. this is how you beat fla., and win a national title. This is also what you’ll never see in athens and therefore the reason you’ll never beat fla. or win a national title. Also thanks again for james carpenter and chance warmack. Chance came from westlake High in atlanta, Kiante Tripp’s old school.

Would have been cool if that article went a bit deeper and explored the relation between spring football game attendance and, well…anything relevant. Bama fans go in droves because they are slaves to the game and put everything else in their life second. Is that something to be proud of ? You tell me.

Sofa King We Todd It, in case you didnt watch the 09 AND the 2010 G day game. Murray played worse this year than last and Mett and Gray improved. And by the way, please on the comparing him to Drew Breese. Murray could carry his jock. Didnt look at numbers (although they were bad), he was uncomfortable, nervouse and had difficulty seeing over the line. With his injury history, and Richt being in love with him no matter how he plays, you had better hope Gray doesn’t transfer, because the new boy Mason, sucked in the Championship game.

Hey to those folks who don’t understand why the Masters affected the spring game attendance, it’s because most Augusta area residents are out of town for that week. All schools and colleges hold their spring break, and everyone rents out their house. That’s thousands of Dawg fans who would otherwise be around to make the short drive to Athens and are instead in Disneyland or something.

Hal, you are a buffoon. Tech has about 1/5 of the alumni that UGa has but has about 20 times the fund raising and donations. Go check the endowment numbers you idiot. And congrats, you drew a bunch of people to the Spring Game. That’s right, you guys determine your birthright according to Preseason polls and stadium sizes. Get over yourself. You are irrelevant on the national scene.

Why are there more Techmites on this blog than UGA fans? Your wittle school didn’t even make the top 50. ROTFLMAO

The taliban really should change their school colors to GREEN and white. Green = jealousy.

Bama always has good Spring game numbers. They are excited about their program because Saban has them at the championship level. If Richt had UGA there, there would be the same Spring game excitement and anticipation. You can blame the Masters, but that’s an excuse. Even with the change of guard at UGA on the defense side this year, it didn’t impact the Spring game because until the team puts up championship results in the Fall, there won’t be any excitement to carry over into the Spring game.

I tried to make sense out of attendance on a controlled scrimmage with itself. We know that Alabama folks need jobs and something to do, so 90,000+ is not unexpected. 30,000-40,000 is what you would expect from most large schools that have large following during regular season. Actually, UGA being 10th was impressive that they were the norm and not a bunch crazies.

POAD, you are correct in that Vince and Barb are Auburn grads who wore orange at one time. However, red and black bought them the “good life”, and if they choose to wear orange again because of Derek, then do it in private. Flaunting around the orange garb amongst the UGA faithful is in poor taste IMHO. Root for your Son for sure, but leave the orange stuff for the house! And, your comment about a coach who was true “red and black”, well that venture did not pan out very good.(see Ray Goff).

Since 1961 Alabama has won 8 National Titles 17 SEC Titles. Overall Alabama has 13 National titles and 22 SEC Titles. No other SEC team is even close. Tennessee is a distant second. If any other team in the Nation can claim an average of 88 thousand a year since 2007 left them step forward. Love it when others say Alabama has nothing else better to do but their school does. The students at all schools get out and ask others to show up for the spring games. Auburn is a violator of the truth, au brags of the 63,000 but the year before claimed it did not matter. Yep keep lying to us and yourselves. ROLL TIDE ROLL and my the truth be with you. LMAO!!!
