Georgia coach Mark Richt said Thursday afternoon that if quarterback Logan Gray “wants to stay at Georgia, I’ll work with him on what position he plays.”
Gray, the No. 2 quarterback on Georgia’s post-spring depth chart, met Monday with Richt to discuss his status on the team and the possibility of transferring to another school. Richt said Thursday there is no timetable for Gray to make a decision.
Richt reiterated that Gray still has a shot to be Georgia’s starting quarterback but said he also would have the option of playing another position. Gray previously expressed interest in playing wide receiver if things did not work out at quarterback. He was listed behind redshirt freshman Aaron Murray at quarterback on the depth chart released last week.
Gray “wants to play, and right now he’s not sure that he can,” Richt said. “I made it real clear, as clear as a bell, that we just had a post-spring depth chart that did not name anybody a starter at any position, including quarterback. But when he ended up No. 2 behind Murray, I’m sure that’s what triggered it.
“So he’s trying to decide what he wants to do – whether he wants to stay here and, if he stays, what position he wants to play and all that kind of stuff. If he wants to be at Georgia, then I’ll work with him on what position he plays and all.”
Richt said it’s not unusual for a player in Gray’s situation to consider his options.
“This type of thing actually happens a whole lot more than anybody ever knows,” Richt said. “It usually doesn’t become a public issue. But I guess nowadays, with the way word travels, somebody caught wind that he had come to see me discussing what to do. Usually those things are done in private, and those kids have a chance to think about it without everybody hammering them on it and wondering what everybody’s opinion of it is.
“But the bottom line is, if he wants to be at Georgia, we’re glad to have him. And we are certainly a better team with him than without him.”
Part of the reason the Gray issue has caused such a ruckus is that if he were to transfer, Georgia’s only scholarship quarterbacks would be Murray, who has never played in a college game, and incoming freshman Hutson Mason, who arrives this summer from Marietta’s Lassiter High School. Gray is a junior but has thrown only 12 passes in college games himself.
“Whether he’s here or whether he’s not here,” Richt said, “we have a tremendous amount of inexperience at the quarterback position.”

I like that Logan’s been a team player by returning punts, etc. However, I don’t see him beating out AM or maybe any other talented QB currently being recruited.

Team player??
What exactly is a “team player”?
Someone who is not a starter or gifted enough to start.
The flip side of that thought process is, Lets play a kid who is an athelete that can make plays on special teams.
Whne did LG return a punt for yardage that counts or a TD??
He has not!!
This crap of playing a player who is not capable of making plays just because he was “there” is BS

Richt advised his own son to transfer to get more playing time, his son transferred form Clemson to Mars Hill, so I thought Richt would advise Gray to transfer, since that’s what he advised his own son to do. Not so much. So, if it’s his son, transferring makes sense, if it’s a guy he needs as a back-up, Richt tries to persuade him to stay. Sorry, seems a little too much into self-interest to be believable.

Logan went 9 for 13 last g-day, and had a good g-day again this year. that’s 2 years in a row, gray beat out his competition, and didn’t win the #1, last year it was cox, this year he beat murray, both times, richt seemed to say logan only plays great when the pressure’s on and it’s a big game–like g-day. and murray chocked on the biggest stage of his short UGA career so far. richt’s explanations for why we should all discount gray’s last 2 g-days, and why we shoud all add to murray’s g-day bomb, sound more hallow every time richt tries to weasel out of it.

Okay Adam –your only criteria is a three controlled scrimmages. You discount all the time the coaches spend with these guys in practice. I suspect Coach Richt can probably do a better job than you of picking the quarterback. You really believe that Richt is going to let the best quarterback ride the bench because of favoritism?
delusional dawg– whether Gray got that or not doesn’t matter. CMR said that all positions are still up for grabs. If you think you can win the job don’t run away.

Richt’s explanation was that Logan played ABOVE his norm, Mett played WAY ABOVE and Murray played BELOW his norm. Richt knows the stats from the 3 spring scrimmages say Gray deserves it, so he’s trying to discount Logan’s stats and AUGMENT Murray’s stats from the 3 spring scrimmages because those stats don’t back up Richt’s decision. Unfortunately, you can’t do that. The stats don’t change, because they don’t fit what we thought SHOULD have happened.
Richt also explained the decision was based on accuracy, and decision making. But 1 int on g-day for murray vs. 0 int for Gray–decision making? Accuracy 45% in g-day for Murray vs. 64% for Gray on g-day? Some of Murray’s previous stats were based on going against the #2 defense, while Logan’s were against the #1. Logan was not happy about that either. Overall, against the #1 defense, with the #1 offense, gray was better over the 3 scrimmages in BOTH accuracy, AND decision making.
G-DAY both Gray and Murray went with the #1 offense, against the #1 defense, same game conditions. Murray didn’t perform well on g-day. Logan did.

Richt has demonstrated a propensity to repeat his mistakes for the last few years (penalties, turnovers, losing to Florida, etc.) He has not for a few years demonstrated he is good at learning from his past mistakes. Past mistake was picking Joe Cox based on his high school pedigree. It didn’t work out well. Now he’s doing the same thing with Murray. and hoping something different will happen this time?
We’ve also had a BRAND NEW QB for 3 years in a row now. That kind of decision making and lack of learning has got to stop.
No, I am not convinced Richt knows how to make those decisions or that he knows how to learn from his mistakes over the past 3 seasons.

Delusional Dawg,
What a stupid comment..obviously you’ve never played football. You say that Richt should not have named a #1 quarterback because it doesn’t promote competition and may discourage someone..What stupid bs…Players want to know the where they rank on the depth chart and this was only a post spring depth chart. Any real competitor would work harder if they are not #1 and push the first stringer. Someone so sensitive to get upset at not being #1 and not trying harder to become the #1 person shouldn’t even be playing anyway

April 29th, 2010
10:24 pm
Did I not read somewhere that CMR compared Murray’s style of play to that of Casey Weldon; not too bad company to be in. So, you doubters wouldn’t want a Casey Weldon type of QB.
Now to take it in another direction, let’s go back to Joe Cox. God love him because he gave his heart and soul to last years team, but if you recall after the UT game Bobo and CMR were talking of replacing Cox, but changed their mind. Guess who they were going to put in, well it wasn’t Logan, although I think he should have been given some meaningful playing time during the season. It was going to be Murray, until CMR decided that last season was toast and he decided to keep the red shirt on Murray and stay with Cox. Murray could have had 6 sure games and possibly a 7th as a bowl game. Notice Gray wasn’t in any of the equation last year, and rumor had it that he didn’t know the play book, while Murray did. Murray always worked hard, and just maybe Gray was somewhat of a slacker last year. How down would you be if you saw Cox struggle and struggle, yet the coaches still wouldn’t play you. Now you have been working harder this year, but his best just may not be good enough. Maybe, he should transfer and be a starting QB some where, he certainly has earned the right to at least give it a run at a different school.

I’d say the Boise St coach did a better job than Richt at picking his QB, penalties, turnovers, forcing turnovers, protecting the ball, beating rivals, than Richt did last year, maybe that guy Chris Petersen, should be #2 on the UGA Depth chart if Richt keeps on making the same mistakes. It’s time for Richt to demonstrate the ability to learn, and stop repeating mistakes, or be replaced by someone that has demonstrated an ability to teach his players how to do these things.

For Michael: Richt has never tried to block a player from transferring if that is requested. Blake Barnes was a backup QB that did so a couple of years ago. Besides, if a player wants to transfer the coach cannot make him stay – rules allow for a transfer by any player. However, if they transfer to another division I school they have to sit out a year before playing but if they go to a division II school they can start immediately.

Pathetic. The mutts are crying themselves to sleep over the thought of losing their backup QB. Why not encourage the guy to transfer to real school where he can play against real competition and have a future career in the NFL? If he wants any of that, he’ll come to the ACC where we manufacture QB’s.

Pete, what exactly is it that you think they don’t “get”? experienced QB are better? I think maybe they do.
I supose in a perfect world, you could recruit the right guy exactly every 3 years, RS him, get significant PT as a back up the next year, then he takes over and play exactly the next 3, never leave early and the nexy guy comes in as soph and works out perfectly too. I’d sure like to see the list of coaching staff that “get it” and have that system going on all the time.
Richt has been a HC for 9 yrs in 7 of those years he has had multiyear starter at QB. I would argue that DJ was an unusual situation. SO basically ONE year, with Cox (because the sophomore in the above equation, obviously was NOT a better choice) he had a placekeeper. Seems like he is trying to start a new run with a multi-year starter, if you guys can stop making up reasons to cry about it long enough to appreciate that.

Give Angela a break guys. She has a valid point. CMR has struggled to win the BIG game. Additionally, until recently, he has been very soft on discipline: i.e. Odell Thurman to name a few. This recent attempt to assert himself as a disciplinarian is a desperate attempt to right a ship that is nearly sunk. I am afraid that this season will be one to remember: inexperienced DC installing a new defense and no seasoned QB = TROUBLE.
