Mark Richt’s tour of Bulldog Club meetings took him Wednesday night to Savannah, where he was, of course, asked about quarterback Logan Gray’s stay-or-go status.
Richt said Gray is still “looking over his options” and still has a chance to win Georgia’s starting quarterback job in preseason camp, according to published and broadcast reports from Savannah.
Gray, the No. 2 quarterback on Georgia’s post-spring depth chart, met with Richt on Monday to discuss his status on the team and the possibility of transferring to another school.
Aaron Murray is listed as the No. 1 quarterback on the post-spring depth chart, but Richt has emphasized that does not guarantee Murray will be the starter in the Sept. 4 season opener against Louisiana-Lafayette.
“Like I’ve said numerous times, Aaron has not won the job,” Richt said in Savannah. He told reporters before the speaking engagement that Murray, Gray or “for that matter” incoming freshman Hutson Mason might win the job in August.
Richt said last week that he wants to get Gray in the “best position” to help Georgia win, whether that is at quarterback or “getting some reps at receiver or something.”

I think it is quite clear that it is going to be an uphill battle for Logan the Gray to earn the starting job and I don’t think you can blame him for looking at his options. You can’t blame the kid for wanting to transfer to a smaller school where he can start.

Richt is the perfect example of the career Back-up QB (Backed Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly at U Miami), so I doubt he has any sympathy for Gray. And, every program that wins does so with depth … you need a 2nd & 3rd string QB! Quit bitching and be a man Logan, Richt hasn’t ruled you out — though you are ruling yourself out!

LOL, CMR is stringing this kid along so that he does not transfer!!! Everyone talking about CMR just handing Logan Gray the starters job but thats exactly what CMR did last year with Cox. After the first game ell me how many people here believed Cox was going to make it all year long? I can tell you this not many especially not me! If CMR would have let the other QBs show some of their stuff last year (in a complete game not during cleanup when the game is out of reach) we would not have this problem now.

Makes one wonder what’s changed from last year to this year. He didn’t hesitate to name Joe Cox the starter. Come h3ll or high water could get CMR off his master plan. Nope, not the int’s, the pic 6’s, the fumbles, the poorly thrown passes that laid AJ out like a piece of meat, nothing moved him off Cox. Gray not prepared to play? How could that not be with Cox taking off every Wednesday to rest his arm, and Logan having 3 years of practices to show his stuff. Something doesn’t pass the smell test here. Was it that Bobo was being spread too thin, do they need a QB coach, did CMR really need to sell that last carpet. Maybe it’s not the QB competition, but the way the coaching staff handles the team. Just a thought.

LG has no chance of being the starter. Richt is pumping him full of sunshine so he does not leave. Everything I hear about Hudson Mason is that he is not good under pressure. He has a INT problem and has trouble when the heat is on….so don’t look to him for any help. I expect us to go 6-6 maybe 7-5 with a return to a low level bowl. Give me a break. CMR is just telling media that Logan Gray has a chance to be the starting QB. He’s just hopping Gray is looking at the press releases. Logan Gray will always be a backup. Even if he stays next year he will be 3rd on the depth chart because CMR is getting close to getting a commitment from Christian Lemay, the number 1 rated QB in the country. Logan Gray should go on to Troy so he can start his next two years. Tough situation for everyone involved.

If Aaron hasn’t won the job, per Richt, why did he even name him the #1 QB for UGA after the Spring? Richt’s desperation, which is understandable, is clearly showing by trying to keep Gray around.
As a previous poster noted, Richt was a career backup QB. If anyone should know the situation and Logan Gray, it should be him.

We Dawgs are in a tough spot at Qb…..If you don’t believe it, you’re kidding yourself……We are close to being one bad ankle away from having a kid at QB that’s using GPS to find the practice field. A true freshman. Oh course, it could be a Herschel moment…..or it couldn’t…….. I do think murray will be an upgrade to Cox, But I fear if Logan leaves, Richt will really put in a conservative offensive game plan to protect Murray, and opposing Defenses will pick up on that pretty quick and shut a limited play book down

All of these comments from Richt are most likely the exact comments he made to LG in that meeting. These are comments that he (CMR) hopes will placate Gray and keep him at UGA. LG is not going to be the starter unless Murray goes down in injury. He doesn’t have what the coaches are looking for (he couldn’t even unseat noodle arm Cox and that says a lot right there) or he would be listed as the #1 QB right now and it would be Murray fighting to unseat him instead of the opposite.

If Gray wants to let leave, I say let him. First, we do need malcontents on the team. And second, this will ensure that we run the ball heavily. We all know how that worked out at the tail end of last season.
Two years ago, Murray was going to be the second coming, so I’m not sure what happened to all the optimism surrounding him. I have the utmost confidence that Murray will be the man, and because of this Gray knows he has no shot.
I want players that will fight when the chips are stacked against them, not weak kneed cry babies. So once again I say if he wants to leave let him!

With Grantham’s 3-4 D and a powerful running game, UGA will be able to get the ball back quick, pound the ball on O and control the clock. I’ve heard this Georgia D may be the best in Athens in 10 years! Look for Ga to be the surprise team in the SEC. Richt’s got the date of the florida game circled on his calendar–that will be the season. He’s ready to pay back the low class urban meyer for those late timeouts 2 years ago. I think you dawg fans are in for a long year. I would like to see a two qb scheme. With Logan running a 4.4 40 yd dash…who wouldn’t want to see him play qb!?! Murray is unproven. I’m not a dawg fan (i don’t hate georgia, i like watching them play) but I live in athens, ga, and I’m sick of watching the rebuilding process.
I think that georgia needs to get a real offensive coordinator not a former player that was a graduate assistant and promoted to OC. Be honest dawgs…Georgia has been trying to compete in the SEC with sub par coordinators. and the result is what dawg fans are experiencing now…BS!!!! Go get the best up and coming OC that fits your talent pool…and get rid of bobo!!!

If Richt moves Gray to receiver, I believe he will stay. He’s a great athlete, just not a very good qb. Many backup qbs play receiver in CFB. Heck, Tex A&M’s leading receiver is their backup qb. Not saying he will lead us in receiving if he’s moved there, but he will contribute to the team. I thing Aaron will be a great qb at UGA. The kid stays in the film room, and he’s organizing all the voluntary workouts for the summer. He’s really taking off with the leadership role.

This is another case of cmr playing mind games with his qb! I think its sad and if I was Gray I would definately be out of there! He will never get that job. Telling him he can compete for it is true but for him to actually think he can win it or if they will let him win it is straight bs! That kid will not get a chance to start as long as murry is healthy! If they got rid of the best qb on the roster for Murray, Gray definately wont beat him out! I smell alittle pressure from up top on this one! Gray can go elsewhere and give himself a chance to be a starter, it just wont happen in athens! Politics in college football is very nasty and all these recruits better take notice cuz if the next great hope/hype comes in after them they can easily be the next Logan Gray!

Mr Richt is sending the wrong messages to his players. Why would he tell his players that a starter isn’t a starter just because it saids it on the depth chart? Does he realize that this kind of talk would affect his players psyche? I bet Aaron Murray is thinking that he must perform flawless to remain the starter. Aaron doesn’t need that kind of tension weighing on his mind especially coming from a hc. He needs all his focus to be used entirely on their opponents.

No matter what Logan Gray does we are in serious trouble at quarterback, which is why we’ll only win 6-8 games this year. Here is the reality check for the day…if either Murray or Gray were better than Joe Cox, CMR would’ve put them ahead of him last year (he did it with Stafford when he put him ahead of Joe’s “T. and Cox” in 2006). The fact that no one established themselves as better than Cox last year tells me we still don’t have a good quarterback at UGA. Maybe Mason will shock me, but I see us having to resort to the “Wild Dog” to gain any yards next year. I don’t care about 10 returning offensive starters, and good running backs, anyone who pays attention to college football today knows you cannot win a big game without throwing the ball. From what I’ve seen of Gray he only knows how to throw it to the wrong team so if he leaves so what? From what I’ve seen of Murray (albeit limited to be sure) he doesn’t have the “zip” on his ball to get it deep (where our best player can do some damage) so we’re already in serious trouble this year.

In the G-Day game, I saw him (in forward stride) throw a half motion side arm pass 25 yards that looked like a bullet. I literally had to check it on the big display to confirm what I saw. It was an amazingly accurate and fast throw with minimal effort.
This kid has the motor to move the offense. I don’t doubt it. He will have to get used to game pace, that’s no lie, but who doesn’t. 3-4 teams in the SEC are starting new QBs. We will get through it and we will win more than 8 games.

To think that right now it would be a Blessing for UGA to have a Joe Cox type kid on the bench for this year. If Logan stays it doesn’t matter. GT51: “Yes we can!” Rambo didn’t start over Evans because Martinez was a fool. Personally, I would have liked to have seen Jones play after being coached well for a change. We have always had the talent on D we just had a horrible scheme that was bend in the secondary and successful only when we got pressure, which we hardly ever brought. What kind of an idiot coaches the DB’s to look at the receiver rather than the ball!? That garbage philosophy is over and–thank heavens for that! We can’t help but improve on D. We improved in the bowl game with Richt, Garner, and 2 GA’s coaching the D. Now we have a full staff of quality defensive coaches. I am looking forward to this season.
Plus, the turnovers will improve (how could they not!?). If we are even in turnovers last year, as ineffective as our offense was, we would have won 2 more games.
Terrible defense the past 3 years caused the offense to have to win by putting up too many points. That may work in the WAC but not in the SEC.
The sky is not falling people. Our O-line should be good. Our RB’s are good. We have a great group of receivers, albeit short in number. As long as Bobo calls a conservative game, we should be competitive in every game. Pound the ball as a rule and opportunistic in the passing game. If we pass the ball to set up the run as Bobo has been prone to do in the past…we should all seek shelter because the sky will be falling!

As far as coddling players, it is the root of all Richt’s problems and the reason he will eventually be let go. Although there is not as much passion for Georgia football as Alabama, Tennessee, Florida or Aurburn, there is enough that fans will not allow this to happen much longer.

I expect that young Mr. Gray probably still thinks that he’s starting QB material with a shot at the bigger time…but if he, and/or his family/advisers, are honest with him they’ll point out that when he had ’shots’ at playing QB in real games he hasn’t even come close to producing. There could be any number of reasons why that was so, but regardless it didn’t happen for him. So for him to think that he could go elsewhere – either one where he could play now, like a Valdosta State, or one where he would have to sit out a year and ‘then what’? – and achieve something that he can’t seem to get here, is folly.
I mean, and has been said, he’s a dislocated finger or sprained ankle away from that next chance to show us, and himself, he can win. Of course, if he likes this part of the country then, shoot, call Bill Curry. Georgia State could accommodate him. And if he doesn’t particularly care for ‘here’ then go someplace you like and good luck with it.

I don’t understand. Why would you name a #1 QB if the competition is still wide open, which obviously it is if a fresh out of high school guy can come in and win the job?? To do that was just stupid because then you open the door for a situation like this. Now it sounds like CMR is just trying to appease Gray to keep him on the depth chart. The truth of the matter is, and everybody knows it, that Gray is not “the guy” and if he’s not content to wait for an injury to get into the starting lineup, he should probably just move on.

CMR did not name Murray the starter. He said he was Number 1 on the depth chart.
Is there a difference? in most programs, no. But since we only have Murray, then of course he is number 1.
I discount Gray because he has never shown me anything that would lead me to believe he is capable of being an every down QB.

First off Hugo, Richt released the post-spring depth chart. That is not the same thing as picking a starter, which has been emphasized over and over again. Secondly, Chicagodawg, it is highly unlikely that Murray will not be a great improvement over cox given the fact that he is far more physically gifted than Cox. Even if Richt wanted to play him last year he could not do so until the second half of the season because he was out with a hyper extended elbow injury on his throwing arm. At that point, it is better to save his eligibility. Yes, if Gray leaves there will be a big issue with QB depth, but if Murray does not get injured then he will be good enough to lead the team. If he gets injured, there is no guarantee Gray would be any better than Mason. Regardless of what happens, coach Richt knows what to do way better than anyone arguing or even bashing 19 year old kids on an AJC blog does.

So according to all reports Logan Gray has outperformed Aaron Murray all spring and at the end was listed below him on the depth chart. This happens a year after UGA refused to play Gray even though Cox was doing miserable. There is also alot of talk about moving Gray to another position. If you are Gray then why would you have any confidence that you might be the starting QB come Fall? Hes not going to be, he knows it, so let him go somewhere else to play. Dont manipulate him into staying.

Murray is the starter until he plays himself out of the job. I know this and CMR knows this also. That means that he is the man, because if Joe Cox couldn’t play his way to the pines, then nobody else could either. Last season the puppies was the ONLY SEC team he could have started for. I do think the same applies to Murray now, with Ole Miss being the only exception. Murray is not bad, but he is a long way from being as good as John Brantley @ Florida, JJ @ LSU, or even Garcia @ S. Carolina. He has POTENTIAL, but right now, that is all he has. His stock took a hit at the spring game, as he was the worst QB on the field. Yes, your beloved pups are in for a long season in ‘10 with at least 5 losses, and another year of having to buy a ticket to get into the Dome for the SEC championship game. Oh, and another year of being the # 2 team in the state.

Right, that baseball team must be full of those scholarly athletes, considering GA tech is one of “at least 27 schools where athletes were at least 10 times more likely to benefit from special admission programs than students in the general population.” – As reported by the associated press.

Logan Gray would be an absolute fool and a total dupe to fall for Richt’s lure. While I have approved of Richt’s recent tough moves with Zach Mettenberger and the others, he is being craven by trying to entice Gray back into the fold with obvious lies. Logan Gray has no chance to play QB next year, and very little chance to play another position. He should sacrifice the rest of his career so Mark Richt and Georgia fans can feel more comfortable? He has been used and kicked to the curb and he knows it. He has absolutely every right to go play somewhere else, and should.

From what I heard the kid just wants to play and although he’d prefer to play QB he really just wants playing time. It’s Mettenberger that threw the monkey wrench into the works. With Mett gone, the opportunity for Gray to play another position possibly went down the tube and he realized it. I think if he stays Richt will have to promise and deliver playing time as a punt returner and possibly receiver, although there may not be enough footballs to go around for the players we already have at that position. Let’s just hope that Bobo and Richt come up with some packages especially for Hutson and that he learns quickly this summer. He may be called upon much quicker than any of us could ever have imagined.

Personally I love reading all the non-UGA people on here knocking Murray. Please hold onto that thought. Living in Tampa I was able to really keep up with him once he committed to UGA. This guy is a beast and a “do what ever it takes” leader. Please keep thinking that he is too short and has no arm strength because I hope you like surprises when he play your team.
As for the so-called UGA people that are doubting him. If you don’t know what your talking about and only going on “hearsay” please shut up and don’t emabarrass yourself. Murray is the real deal. He will be a very good QB in the SEC.
I hope LG does not transfer, but wish him the best if he does. Personally, I think, if he was going to transfer he would have done it by now. He’s upset because he was not listed as the #1. Good, I hope he is upset, that usually gets an athlete to perform even better to win that position.
Not to write a book, I know too late, the Offense is the least of our worries people. I worry a lot more about the defense than I do the offense. It usually takes 2 years to get a new scheme in place.
Go Dawgs!

UGA Alum, I understand what you’re saying. But a team is much more than it’s 22 starters. No I don’t think Logan has the tools that we thought he possessed when he first arrived. But that doesn’t mean that he couldn’t still be a valuable contributor. It’s tough to reconcile such facts when you’ve been a star in high school. But this isn’t just the next level . . . it’s the SEC . . . it’s where the big boys play . . . and either you’re starting material or you prepare yourself for supporting and possibly spot roles as a player. Those who are able to see value in team effort can accept a lesser spot. Those who can’t often take not starting as an affront to their honor and many times either leave or get into trouble. Of course Richt wants him to stay. What coach in such a predicament wouldn’t do the same thing? But Richt’s argument is as logical as it is self-serving. It’s in Logan’s hands. Outplay Murray this summer and he starts. Of course although this may be a possibility, the chances of it becoming reality are pretty slim. Murray seems to be the better QB. Personally I think to stack the cards in your favor by leaving and going to a situation where the competition may not be so keen just so you can start is even more distasteful than losing out to tough competition. Everyone on a team cannot start. Some have to be willing to support. I hope Logan is mature enough to realize this. He hasn’t been kicked to the curb.

Logan Gray was a really good high school QB, as were Joe Cox and Joe T III. Unfortunately, they are only average college QBs, and probably below average for the SEC. I’m thinking the only reason we offered Gray was to get Aaron White, just like we offered Cox to get MoMass. It’s a shame it came back to bite us in the a@#. Just my opinion.

It’s completely understandable for CMR to want LG to stay & compete. It would still be best for the TEAM if LG stays as QB ; back-up QB ; WR ; Wild Dawg ; H-Back , whatever. That said , it’s also getting past time for the kid to make a grown-up decision here. Although the coaches say there’s no timetable , if we’re still waiting to hear 1 – 2 weeks from now , it’ll be more of an insulting situation , I think. Decide already kid ……..

To TRC with his dumb quote/comment: “GA tech is one of “at least 27 schools where athletes were at least 10 times more likely to benefit from special admission programs than students in the general population.” ”
Yea, the reason why Tech players benefit from “special admissions” compared with students in the “general population” is that at Tech there are no basket weaving majors or pre-study majors, or education majors (not knocking teachers here), or recreation mgmt or sports mgmt majors – or – the funniest of them all is “Housing”. BTW – what the heck is the “Housing” major at UGA? It isn’t construction. It seems odd that that is the # 1 major for UGA football players (31 majors out of 120 – read the program guide) – and almost all of them are the running backs, receivers, and defensive players. I take it that it isn’t “rocket science”.

Tech athletes get in on their own accord with no stipulations or handouts. Unlike UGA that will take anyone that can somewhat spell their own name. Our athletes go on to work for NASA, CDC, etc. While UGA’s go on to sit in jail or bag groceries.

When Richt found out the details, he had enough. Richt will put up with the traffic violations, minor alcohol but when you get into assault he has proven he will not play that game. I say good for him! As a season ticket holder, I would prefer to lose every game than to cheer a person of Mett’s caliber.

Just throwin this out there….Murray threw 3X more INT’s this spring than Gray did.
IMO having a freshman QB who throws a lot of INT’s isn’t going to sit well.
Gray got hosed by CMR his whole career. Everybody thinks he sucks and doesnt have what it takes…from 12 passes? Not many people can be great right out of the box especially against teams like Florida when the game is already over.
He did better than Murray in the spring game IMO. Too bad CMR didn’t get fired after last season, b/c he’d be #1 right now.
