Cleaning out the notebook:
Didn’t realize how much clout you had, I said to Fox. . . .
“How about that?” he replied with a laugh. “I was the only one preaching that [a while ago]. I’m glad they expanded. Certainly, as you know, I supported 68 before people were talking a lot about it. I do think it eventually will go to 96.”
Actually, Fox said, his opposition to 96 has softened as he’s learned more about how it could work. “It will still preserve the magic of the tournament,” he said. But his guess is that March Madness will stay at 68 teams for “at least two years.”
The NCAA Division I Board of Directors is expected to approve the expansion to 68 at its meeting on Thursday.
“Our game has a problem because so many kids have the misconception that they’re going to go to college for one year and then go to the NBA and make millions of dollars,” Fox said. “And that’s not realistic, and it’s an issue coaches across the country are trying to address.
“There are so many guys jumping in this draft. Is it because of a fear of a lockout [next year]? But that doesn’t mean there are more spots in this draft. So you have so many guys jumping in this draft that shouldn’t be in it.”
“We were probably worse at not getting turnovers than we were at giving them up,” he said in Columbus last week. “That’s one of the reasons Coach [Todd] Grantham is here. We expect to pressure the quarterback different. The one man who turns it over the most is the quarterback. . . . That’s the guy you want to harass; that’s the guy you want to put the pressure on. And you put the pressure on him by taking away what he really likes to do the most.”

There must not be much for the GT fans to cheer about latelly when the best they can come up with is an insignificant baseball series…….you’re still losers in the sports that are important…..hahahaha………As far as the turnovers are concerned, I believe that quarterback pressure’s are the root of most turnovers…..this will improve …..also, I hope we are teaching our LB’s and DB’s some pass catching skills……I cant count the numbers of would-be interceptions that were just plain dropped

My question to Richt is this. If you knew we weren’t pressuring the QB enough and not getting enought turnovers why didn’t you tell the defensive coordinator that works for you to change it up and get after the QB? When the offense is struggling you work with them more, why not the defense? As the head guy if you see something that isn’t working aren’t you supposed to make the changes, and I don’t mean firing someone, as you eventually did. I mean, working with the guy you have to get better and not doing the same thing.

I saw in the Griffin paper this morning that Richt will be passing through Griffin on this tour and will be looking at Dickson and Niles while they already have Moore. I hope they get that Dickson kid if they dont he will for sure be playing for Bama. I think Niles might be headed to Maryland but UGA can easily get him and there is another kid at Griffin that Oklahoma State is after. Good luck Richt on this tour i hope you get the chance to recruit some great players bc GA is loaded with them.

Disagree with Richt whole-heartedly! It is much more important to concentrate on not turning over the ball than it is to force turnovers. Make your tackles and reads on defense and everything will be fine, work on pass protection (constantly breaking down) and the ill-advised passes caused by breakdown of pass protection. This disturbs me that he hasn’t figured this out yet.

The offense was MUCH better than the defense, as far as turnovers go.
Offensive Giveaways per game:
2.2 (ranked #99 in NCAA)
Offensive Interceptions thrown:
1.3 a game (#100 in NCAA)
Defensive Takeaways Per Game:
1 per game (#118 in NCAA)
If you look at the 5 losses, 4 of them were games where the OFFENSE turned the ball over 3 or more times a game.
But yes, the defense didn’t force many turnovers in those losses either.
Hard to say which was worse last year, how in the world did Georgia win 8 games with that kind of turnover situation?

I’ll give it up to Tech for beating the Dawgs in baseball. It’s kind of hard to replace 13 guys that were drafted. So in the past academic year (2009-2010) Tech can hold reins on baseball, woman’s volleyball and tennis. However in the other sports (football, mens and womans basketball, softball, mens tennis etc.) Tech was dominated.

Jaydawg – not picking particularly on you – but you will make a great example. A lot of folks write about how bad Martinez was – we should have got rid of him 2 years ago:
– 2005 – UGA wins the SEC – Martinez was the DC.
– 2007 – UGA finishes #2 Nationally – beats up Tebow in the Gator Stomp – and humbles Hawaii in the BCS Sugar Bowl – no one was calling for his head.
– 2008 – UGA starts preseason #1 – finishes 10-3. The O-Line was made up of underclassmen and injuries galore. HOwever, the Defense was excellent at times – not so good at others – consistency was not there – Matinez admits they need to play better- they underachieved and did not carry the team when needed – NO ONE was calling for his head – but people are rumbling. The blow out losses to Alabama, Florida – and the loss to GT were sobering. This was not the same defense as 2007 or 2005. But it was only one season.
2009 – the defense lost it’s bite. Embarrasing low takeaway yield. – No stops after we turned the ball over. It was a rough and embarrasing year. At this point – a change had to be made.
MY POINT THIS – the BANDWAGON fans and folks that write about getting rid of Martinez 2 to 3 seasons ago forget what was actually accomplished.
Let’s get off of Martinez – wish him the best – he gave great effort – had succcess – but new leadership was needed.
Again – it just did not work out and we wish him the best. A new scheme and aggressive coach was needed – and Richt made the move.
Let’s be thankful of our past successes – and be optimistic about the present and future. We have a sound aggressive DC that is changing things up – and wants to HIT the QB!!!
Let’s all leave Martinez alone – and focus on 2010!!!!

Bo Williams does have a point. With all the bragging UGA sports fans do about all of their major sports their records certainly don’t warrant anything other than mediocore. I don’t think Richt realizes just HOW BAD his QB has been in the KEY STAT: Td to Int Ratio
Alabama’s QB last year:
17 tds, 4 Int’s = 4.25 td to int ratio = 14-0 National Champs
Georgia:
24 td’s, 15 int’s= 1.6 td to int ratio = 8-5, Shreveport Bowl
I’d like to see less emphasis on PASSING TD’S, and more emphasis on BALL PROTECTION, and more emphasis on TD TO INT RATIO.

“I didn’t look up the info on Georgia football team’s most popular major. I need to do that.”
That won’t work. The course numbers (like HACE-5900) are listed but not the title.
Here is the overall description of the major in Housing:
Description:
The Housing major focuses on the socio-economic aspects of housing. Special emphasis is given to housing needs and the manner in which the family, the private sector, and government policy respond to those needs. The program features an in-depth study of housing finance and the range of housing alternatives. The program may also be used as preparation for graduate study or as a pre-professional degree. Students may choose an emphasis in Residential Property Management which prepares students to work with diverse groups in property management. Coursework includes sales (leasing), accounting, development, human resources, technology services, legal issues, training, and management.
Career Opportunities:
Students with a housing major are prepared for employment with local, state, and federal housing agencies, helping tenants with housing use and maintenance practices. Graduates may enter employment in real estate firms, utility companies, planning commissions, and with manufacturers of housing and housing components. Other sources of employment are financial institutions involved with mortgages, extension service, and property management firms.
Job placement:
On an informal basis only through alumni contacts and internship opportunities.

To all those Techsters out there thumping their chests because they swepted UGA in baseball last night… GOOD FOR YOU!! Tech has a solid team and you deserve it.
To the Techsters on the board rubbing our noses in it… one question: being a season ticket holder for both UGA baseball and football, I have a ticket I thought you might be interested in: GAME 3 OF THE 2004 SUPER REGIONAL at RUSS CHANDLER. NEVER BEEN USED AND IN MINT CONDITION: Face was $10… but it certainly is worth MUCH more than that. Anyone interested???

Richt has a lot of disguntled players on his offense this year.
Logan Gray’s not happy, and you know his ex-teammate TE Aaron White is not happy either, both named #2 on depth chart.
Mettenberger’s WR’s friends that caught all those td’s form Mettenberger arn’t happy about Mettenberger being booted after a 1st time offense.
Ealey and King arn’t happy because neither’s gettng enough touches.
AJ Green, O-Line, and the WR’s are not happy because of the 3rd year in a row with a new QB.
Lynch isn’t happy after out-performing Orson Charles over Spring scrimmages.
Who’s happy on the offense?
EX High school teammates Aaron Murray and Orson Charles, both named #1 on the depth chart, for reasons unknown.

GT fans get off this UGA blog with you idiot comments. College baseball is so insignificant that you can not name 5 people that have seen a game this year. If you think College baseball is significant compared to football and basketball go look up the television revenue generated in the three sports. Also for all the Academic talk, take that somewhere else. We all know that both schools have BB and football players that would not be there if not for their athletic talents. This is just part of Major College athletics programs.

Dumb comment about CMR. Do you really think that CMR did not talk to CWM about the defense and make suggestions. Do you think it’s that simple just to talk and make a recommendation and poof it’s fixed. I guarantee you that CMR was in CWM face the whole season behind closed doors and i guarantee you that he told him that his job was on the line if there wasn’t improvement. To even suggest that CMR didn’t do these things is stupid.

We still count our losses to you guys when we had coaches named Goff and Donan. Nevermind the fact you tools were proven cheaters during your “wins” in the late 90’s. When’s the last time the tools were ACC champs during the season or tournament? Pretty sure UGA won the SEC tournament ON YOUR COURT just a couple of years ago.

Alt, I think is the giveaway-takeawy ratio that matters. UGA was near the bottom of the barrell in that catagory. IMO, last season was the perfect storm. New QB, O line injurys, mistakes in the kick return and kick coverage game, and on and on and on. When the D or the special teams give the O the ball in good field posistion that takes the pressure off the QB and helps open up the run. When the O gets the ball deep on it’s own end all the D has to do is load the box and play cover 2, especially with a new QB. When the O turns the ball over it puts the pressure on the D. Special teams mistakes put the pressure on everybody. One hand has to wash the other to have a winning team.

Hows the loss to a middle of the road UGA football team and a terrible basketball team feeling.
Oh
Be thankful Tech is located on North Ave because all of the violence that occurs there and around there, drown out the disciplinary issues Tech has.

Let’s stop this. Even though tech sweapt us baseball
we all know it’s just a bad week.
I am much more concerned with unseating FLA in the east
and beating Tenn who has waxed us 3 out of 4.
Time for Richt to coach to win! Problem is we may
be in trouble at QB

P.S. On to your topic Tim:
I don’t think Richt knows how to fix stuff, I’m sure he tries, but he doesn’t know how to teach stuff, so that people CHANGE, if you look at stuff like turnovers, penalties, arrests, interceptions, they all are bad, every year, year after year, so I’m thinking we need a new Head Coach coach to fix this stuff.
I agree with others here who say it’s time for Richt to go. I’m tired of hoping things will change, and they never do, because he can’t figure out how to fix the same stuff.

Are there that many Tech fans who actually believe their star players are also academically gifted? I’ll be the first to admit UGA had some dummies in the starting lineup. I mean did Stephon Marbury leave after 1 year because he had a job waiting for him at Microsoft? “I’m goin’ to G-Tech University.” Yes you did, Stephon. Can I get a look at your transcript?

You “what have you done for me lately” Nerds apparently didn’t read the post comparing baseball programs: Tech 3 CWS appearances(2 since 2000), no national titles. UGA 6 CWS(4 since 2000), one national title. UGA won as many CWS games in 2008 as Tech has won in their history.
As for Tech’s glorious football season and their genius coach, remind me again, who won the UGA-Tek game last year at “the Joke at Coke”. And those were Freshman and Soph RB’s who ran for 400 yards on you….

Georgia will not be losing to tech again for years—mark it down! That 2008 loss was a total fluke. Ga players didn’t even show up and tech got every break the whole game. Ga 41 tech 20 in 2010–bet the house.

Last Year Richt new what the trouble was. No pressure on the QB. A sit back and read defense. A puppy dog defense. He denied the trouble was Wee Willies. Over and over the last few years he denied the obvious and defended Wee Willie. That is why the fans got so angry. We don’t like to be BS’ed!

Let me get this straight, the D gets 12 turnovers and Richt’s offense gives up 28 turnovers – and the defense was the problem?

Hi Tim-
I just noticed an imposter posted as ‘louie’ with some Ga Tech rant. They might be doing this to others here too to try and discourage posts or dialogue, might be a competitor trying to reduce hits to your blog.
Note:
That was NOT me, I do not post off-topic, as I know that is against the AJC blog rules.
Please ban the person’s computer ISP that posted as ‘louie’ at 1:08p.m. on Ap 28 on this thread.
I love your blog, but just wanted you to know I would not disrepsect you or your readers that way.
Thanks. I am sure you will take care of it.

The more and more I hear about CTG I get chills. This guy sounds like the coach we’ve been needing. Someone not to tell the players to GATA!! He’s GATPlayersA!!!!!!! the past 3 seasons they have been soft and haven’t looked like they have any fire behind them unless they are playing some good songs in Sanford Stadium. It shouldn’t take a song to get the team pumped up!!! I miss the early 2000s when that defense was just nasty!!! Lets GATA Georgia! I’d rather watch 60mins of hardnose defense than offense anyday.

I disagree on the turnovers – 28 on offense is a lot worse than gettin 12 on defense. The offense turnesd over the ball so much the defense was on the filed 2/3rds of the time.

None the less, outside of my wife and a handfull of other names, i could not spell most of what they called out. All middle eastern. Last i checked there was no Osamalama bamla lala blcklablalblh dela da on the football team.

You seem to have a hang up about attacking Murray’s size….let me tell you something dude….Murray was the #3 ranked QB in the land coming out of HS. Florida and Alabama (real schools) and about 50 other schools, recruited him, so they wasn’t too concerned about his size. He never gave Tech a sniff, cause Tech new they had about as much chance of winning the lottery as signing a QB like this. Your scared man…and you need to be. You’ll see how much his stature matters come November.
