The buzz begins about A.J. Green, Clint Boling and the 2011 draft

  • NFL mock drafts for 2011 are already out there, and two Georgia players figure prominently. Wide receiver A.J. Green, widely expected to enter the draft after his junior season, is a consensus top-10 pick, and offensive tackle Clint Boling, who’ll be a senior in the fall, isn’t far behind Green in some 2011 mocks. In fact, one site, nepatriotsdraft.com, has Green going No. 2 overall and Boling No. 5. As ESPN’s coverage of the 2010 draft wound down Saturday afternoon, Mel Kiper Jr. rated Green the No. 4 prospect for 2011. Another ESPN analyst, Todd McShay, rated Green the eighth best prospect for ‘11.
  • Back to the 2010 draft: The SEC sent word that it had more players selected (49) than in any previous seven-round NFL draft.  The Big Ten was second with 34 selections, followed by the ACC with 31, the Big 12 with 30 and the Pac-10 with 29. All 12 SEC schools had at least one player picked.
  • SEC picks by school: Florida 9, Alabama 7, LSU 6, Tennessee 6, Georgia 5, Ole Miss 4, Kentucky 3, Auburn 2, Mississippi State 2, South Carolina 2, Vanderbilt 2, Arkansas 1.
  • Within an hour of being drafted in the third round by Tennessee, former Georgia linebacker Rennie Curran naturally was asked by Nashville reporters about the concerns about his height. Curran had an answer ready: “As far as height goes, I don’t play barefoot,” he said. “When I put my cleats on and my helmet on, I am about 6-1 or 6-2. And I am not weak, either. I may be a little shorter, but I am not weak at all, by any means.”
  • And former Georgia defensive tackle Geno Atkins, a fourth-round pick by the Bengals, was asked by Cincinnati reporters why his statistics fell off from his sophomore season (team-leading 14.5 tackles for loss, including 7.5 sacks) to his junior and senior seasons.  “I guess the sophomore year was a pretty extraordinary year for me,” Atkins said. “I tried to do a little something my senior year, but I guess I didn’t really get to those numbers. . . . I don’t think there was anything different. It was just, like, sometimes you’re able to make a play and sometimes you’re not. That’s how the game works, really.”
  • If you missed it, three undrafted Dogs quickly agreed to sign with NFL teams as free agents: wide receiver Michael Moore with Detroit, cornerback Prince Miller with Baltimore and safety Bryan Evans with Cincinnati.
  • And if you missed this one, Mark Richt said Aaron Murray, the Dogs’ new No. 1 quarterback, reminds him of former Florida State QB (and Heisman Trophy runnerup) Casey Weldon. That story is here.

Fla elite? Has that elite program EVER defeated every team on their schedule on any given year?

Auburn has more National Championships that Georgia.

The one thing about 1-AA (FCS) that trumps 1-A is the FACT that our titles at GS/CU are EARNED. None of these half-a titles or dream titles for Yech, overinflation by 5-7 by Bama, but only earned titles. Georgia’s claim in 1942, 10-1 and Rose Bowl Champ, sounds much better than OSU’s. Who’d OSU know at the AP?

Patrick,

Elite does not constitute success or lack of success over a very short time frame such as 5,7, or 10 years. Texas and OU disappeared from the college football scene from the late 80s throughout the 90s. But they were always elite programs because of who they were and because of their overall success.

Anybody can pick a point in time as you often do with the Richt era and claim elite or non elite status. Just as you can make a case for elite status for Georgia based on a 9 year time frame others can make a case for non elite status for Georgia based on the last 4 years. 10-10 in the sec east over the last 4 years is not “elite”.

Only 2 sec titles in the past 28 years is certainly not elite. And if you really want to be “elite” in the last 10 or 20 years you really need to be able to claim a minimum of at least 1 national championship.

You can throw out all the nice stats you want about Richt having a good program in the 2000s. He has certainly had a good program. No argument here. Good but certainly not elite.

The lack of a national title in the last 10,20, 30 years means you are not “elite”. And there is no way around that argument. “Elite” sports teams win championships. Plain and simple. The Georgia girls gymnastics team is ‘elite’, the UGA golf team is “elite”, the NY yankees, LA lakers, Brazilian national soccer team, those are sports teams that are “elite”. Not the UGA football team. Do you get it now?

Green knew Hill would go to Tech. They are childhood friends and talked about everything. He couldn’t handle competing with Green at Tech.

Patrick,

Florida may never have had an undefeated season but it doesn’t change the fact that they are the winningest program in the country over the last 20 and probably 25 years. Certainly since 1990. The 3 national titles in 14 years also confers elite status.

How can you yourself call yourself elite if you’ve lost 17 out of 20 to one program? As I said anyone can go through a bad 5,7, or even 10 year stretch. But a 20 year stretch of futility against 1 team?

HungryDawg, My team?? My team is a team that if they needed to hire a new coach today, I wouldn’t want it to ultimately be Richt. The coaches out of Boise or Utah would I think have more promise for future championships. I just see too much talent that goes to UGA that doesn’t translate into champioships. To have a #1 NFL pick in Stafford and the best running back in college ball that year in Moreno and not even being in the conference championship game with at least a shot to get to the NC! That, my friend, is classic underachievement.

Patrick,

We aren’t elite yet, but we’re one of the top programs in the nation. Even SEC observer would have to admit to that. We’re striving for elite status. We’ll get there.

SEC observer yet you put Bama in elite status and they have lost 7-8 to Auburn and yes UF is a elite program now but they didn’t win the 1st SEC championship until 1991 and they have been playing since 1906…so it flows and changes and I’m sorry your not the one that gets to decide who’s elite and who’s not as its as subjective as each fans opinion.

I love people that like to spout off an endless set of statistics and then display them as irrefutable “truth”. I could use any set of stats like patrick does and support virtually any side of any arguement. Heck, used to do that all the time in college. For instance, I could use a set of statistics that would be a “factual’ arguement that the Stimulus Plan is working and a totally different set that it is an abject failure and not use ONE incorrect number or figure. Don’t kid yourself, statistics DO lie. Or should I say that the people who manipulate them do. Politicians do it every day.

I’ve agreed with most everything you’ve said up until now. Yes, you can use numbers most of the time to make any argument you want, but nothing Patrick has said is inaccurate. And no, with employment still at nearly 10% with the only new jobs that are being “created” are government jobs, no sensible person would agree that the stimulus is working.

Its also interesting to note…..uga has the exact same record when they won thw sec as fla when they ‘won’ their NCs. Only uga was unlucky to have that record in a season that had two unbeatens. Fla merely was lucky enuff to have USC lose to UCLA on the last week. Thaats whaT seperates uga drom fla in the NC category…. luck not merit

WR: Hill vs. the overrated hack Green = Hill
RB: Jones and Allen vs. King and Early = Jones and Allen
Def: Greatest college defensive mind in history vs. a guy that got fired by the Browns = Groh
Off: Greatest offensive mind of the past 50 years vs. Booboo = Sir Johnson.
