The buzz begins about A.J. Green, Clint Boling and the 2011 draft
9:47 am April 26, 2010, by Tim Tucker
- NFL mock drafts for 2011 are already out there, and two Georgia players figure prominently. Wide receiver A.J. Green, widely expected to enter the draft after his junior season, is a consensus top-10 pick, and offensive tackle Clint Boling, who’ll be a senior in the fall, isn’t far behind Green in some 2011 mocks. In fact, one site, nepatriotsdraft.com, has Green going No. 2 overall and Boling No. 5. As ESPN’s coverage of the 2010 draft wound down Saturday afternoon, Mel Kiper Jr. rated Green the No. 4 prospect for 2011. Another ESPN analyst, Todd McShay, rated Green the eighth best prospect for ‘11.
- Back to the 2010 draft: The SEC sent word that it had more players selected (49) than in any previous seven-round NFL draft. The Big Ten was second with 34 selections, followed by the ACC with 31, the Big 12 with 30 and the Pac-10 with 29. All 12 SEC schools had at least one player picked.
- SEC picks by school: Florida 9, Alabama 7, LSU 6, Tennessee 6, Georgia 5, Ole Miss 4, Kentucky 3, Auburn 2, Mississippi State 2, South Carolina 2, Vanderbilt 2, Arkansas 1.
- Within an hour of being drafted in the third round by Tennessee, former Georgia linebacker Rennie Curran naturally was asked by Nashville reporters about the concerns about his height. Curran had an answer ready: “As far as height goes, I don’t play barefoot,” he said. “When I put my cleats on and my helmet on, I am about 6-1 or 6-2. And I am not weak, either. I may be a little shorter, but I am not weak at all, by any means.”
- And former Georgia defensive tackle Geno Atkins, a fourth-round pick by the Bengals, was asked by Cincinnati reporters why his statistics fell off from his sophomore season (team-leading 14.5 tackles for loss, including 7.5 sacks) to his junior and senior seasons. “I guess the sophomore year was a pretty extraordinary year for me,” Atkins said. “I tried to do a little something my senior year, but I guess I didn’t really get to those numbers. . . . I don’t think there was anything different. It was just, like, sometimes you’re able to make a play and sometimes you’re not. That’s how the game works, really.”
- If you missed it, three undrafted Dogs quickly agreed to sign with NFL teams as free agents: wide receiver Michael Moore with Detroit, cornerback Prince Miller with Baltimore and safety Bryan Evans with Cincinnati.
- And if you missed this one, Mark Richt said Aaron Murray, the Dogs’ new No. 1 quarterback, reminds him of former Florida State QB (and Heisman Trophy runnerup) Casey Weldon. That story is here.

4 BAMA players are listed in the 1-round: Julio Jones, Mark Ingram, Marcel Dareus, and Mark Barron.
Marcel Dareus is the one knocked out McCoy in the NC.

Georgia could have a decent 2011 draft but its hard to see Clint Boling going 5th overall and going in front of someone like Mark Ingram. Alabama will definitely have a great draft also. Mark Ingram, Julio Jones, Marcel Dareus, Donta Hightower all look to be 1st round picks and all american safety Mark Barron will also be 1st round or high second round. The scary thing is that all 5 of Alabama’s potential 1st round picks are only juniors this year.

PTC Dawg, and others. How do you figure UGA tied for 2nd in the east last season? UT the 2nd place team (SOLE POSESSION). UT had only one loss to FL in the east. UGA had FL. and UT losses. Wishful thinking and maybe to consolation but no way UGA finished tied for second. No way. Look at the records.

OMG…here we go with all of those “statistics” from patrick. All I’m saying is that if you go around the country and talk about the “elite” programs, the name Georgia does not come up unless you’re talking to a Georgia fan. And “how2fish”, Bama has earned it’s elite status not only from this years success but also it’s cumulative history and over the last 20 years they have a couple of NCs and numerous SECCG appearances, mostly, if not all against Florida. Those two programs undoubtedly rule the top conference in college football today….

UGA is recognized as the champ in 1942 as well. And UGA was 11-1 in 1942 thanks to winning the Rose Bowl. While OSU played two fewer games, along with no bowl game and ended the season with a mighty win over Iowa-Navy Pre-Flight.

Georgia did not finish 2nd in the division. Not sure but I think they were 4th or 5th but I do know that they received the Independence bowl bid which typically goes to the last seed in the west division. Just an observation.

I agree with SEC FANATIC,
There are only a few “elite” programs in the country right now. Bama, LSU, Florida, USC, Texas, Oklahoma and I’m sure the overflow of Big 10 homers in the media would have to throw Ohio St. in the mix. That’s probably it. UGA is without a doubt a top 15, 10 program, no debate in that, but we’re not elite yet. That is what we are striving for and hope Richt can get us there.

Me,
Richt is definitely a top tier coach. Your premise is very vague. There is definitely more into hiring a coach than wins and losses, even though Richt has no problem in that category either, but really, there are few programs that would give a definite no, with zero hesitation, to Richt if his name came up. 3-5 out of 120 programs ain’t too bad.

SEC FANATIC and Bama has also voided ALL of their wins in 05,06 and two in 07…when you hear that “elite” is not what comes to mind. And do you really count a NC if you go on probation the next year? My point was once “elite” doesn’t mean your are always ‘elite” and there is nothing to stop a team that has lost its “elite” status from once again regaining that status as Bama has done recently. But no one not a Bama fan equated Bama with a “elite” program in 06…did they?

Agree with SEC FANATIC – only time when UGA is considered ELITE – it is when you are talking to fellow Dog fans.
How2Fish – I guess West Virginia is an ELITE football power:
Since 2003 – they have won 4 BE Conference Titles
Since 2005 – they have been to 2 BCS Bowls
– Beating UGA in 2005 Sugar
– Beating OKLAHOMA in the 2007 Fiesta
See my point – we can argue all day – IMO – West Virginia is not ELITE – but has been very good – despite falling to back to back 9-4 seasons of late.
When you talk about the ELITE programs – ALABAMA, TEXAS, OHIO STATE, USC – even NEBRASKA carries more weight than UGA. This is not being disrespectful to UGA – it that historically – these schools have competed for more NC’s. FLORIDA has been so strong the last 20 years – they are now in the psyche of most people in ELITES. Not LSU – who was strong for several years – and ELITE for a year or two.
Would you consider AUBURN among the ELITE of college football?
They have 2 recognized NC’s
They have won 3 SEC West Div Titles (UGA has 3 SEC East DIV titles)
They have a winning head to head to head against UGA!!!
I guess Auburn is an ELITE as well!!!
IMO – Auburn is very respectable – no games are east against this school – but they are not in the class of an ALABAMA, USC, TEXAS, etc.

All you Georgia fans out there who are bashing Bryan Evans ought to be ashamed of yourselves. He played his heart out for the Dawgs! Bryan didn’t lose games; the team lost games. Did he get beat deep or mess up in coverage every now and then? Of course he did, but he made some spectacular plays as well. And, let’s be honest, there isn’t a single collegiate or NFL defensive back for that matter that plays a perfect game each week. Bryan will do very well in the NFL; he’s got a high motor, can hit like crazy, and has great speed. The Bengals won’t regret signing him and he’ll most definitely make the team.
I don’t get you people out there that call yourselves Bulldog fans. For that matter, I don’t get any fan that feels a need to rip on a collegiate athlete. It’s COLLEGE for god’s sake! Some of you people that blog on this website are absolute morons, have zero class, and don’t have any respect for another human being.
As for you Mr. Evans, I for one enjoyed watching you play and I’ll never forget that shot you put on Dez Bryant in Stillwater…hell of a hit!!! Thanks for choosing to be a Bulldog; thank you for your dedication, your hard work, and the manner in which you represented the Bulldog Nation. Good luck to you now and in the future.

Ok, this Gray transferring business is getting annoying now on 680. I find it hard to believe he would transfer being the number 2, unless of course his ego is so crushed that he doesn’t want be #2 again for an entirely different QB. Looks like Murray could have a couple of walk-ons and a true freshman as his backup.

SEC Fanatic,
That is true. If you travel to other parts of the country people do recognize Alabama and Florida as elite names. Florida is recognized out of pure dominance. 3 national titles since the 90s and 7 sec titles and 10 appearances says it all. Florida is also the nation’s winningest program since the 90s.
Alabama. Well the name kind of says it all. The most sec titles 22, tied with ND for the most legitimate national titles at 8 each, the most bowl victories and appearances, blah, blah, blah. And 2 national titles since the 90s and the 2nd most appearances behind Florida in the seccg with 7.
Bama also has a rich history not just in bowls but in playing big time regular season home and homes with big time programs like USC, OU, Nebraska, ND, Penn State, etc. It was all these big time intersectional games that Bama started playing decades ago that separated the Alabama legacy from everyone else in the sec. People in those hotbeds of college football remember those clashes. Had Georgia or anyone else had the vision decades ago to realize what kind of national exposure this brings to a program as Bear Bryant did then perhaps those programs would be mentioned in the same reverance as Alabama.
What it comes down to is this: Florida is nationally recognized as “elite” because of its dominance since 1990 as college football’s winningest program. Bama is recognized as “elite” because of its recent rise back to dominance, 2 ncs since 90, its tradition which is easily the best in the south, and its status as the winningest college football program of the last 100 years. One is the most winningest program of the last 20 years and the other is the winningest of the last 100. That is why they are “elite”.
I’ve nothing against Georgia or the dog fans but the fact of the matter is that Georgia is simply not mentioned in the same “elite” statsus as Alabama or Florida. I know that dog fans will ask where was Alabama in the early 2000s? Doesn’t matter. One bad 5 or 7 year stretch in the early 2000s doesn’t diminish a century’s worth of accomplishments, particularly when every program out there has had a stretch of anywhere from 5, 10 or in Georga’s case-20 years of being irrelevant.
In Florida’s case you can argue that the gators were irrelevant for much of their football history prior to 1990. This is true. But Florida’s dominance over the last 20 years of the best conference in football is what put them into “elite” status. Not elite in terms of tradition such as Alabama or even Georgia which has a fine tradition itself. But certainly elite in terms of on the field success.
