QB Gray meets with Richt; no decision yet on transfer (UPDATED)

(Updated 8 p.m.)

Logan Gray, Georgia’s No. 2 quarterback, met Monday with coach Mark Richt to discuss his status on the team and the possibility of transferring to another school.

Gray remained with the Bulldogs as of Monday night, associate athletics director Claude Felton said, but “he is weighing options for the remainder of his playing career.”

The uncertainty about Gray’s future surfaced four days after Richt revealed the Bulldogs’ post-spring depth chart, which has Gray, a junior, behind redshirt freshman Aaron Murray at quarterback.

Richt’s dismissal of Zach Mettenberger from the team on April 18 left Murray and Gray as the only quarterbacks in the Georgia program until recruit Hutson Mason arrives this summer from Marietta’s Lassiter High.

So if Gray decides to transfer, that would leave a true freshman, Mason, as Murray’s apparent backup in the fall.

There was no indication Monday night that Gray has made a decision. He was not available for comment.

Gray has two years of eligibility remaining at Georgia but, under NCAA transfer rules, would have only one year to play if he moved to another Division I-A school. He would retain two years of eligibility if he transferred to a school in a lower division.

Richt said last week that Murray’s spot atop the depth chart does not guarantee he will be the starter in the Sept. 4 season opener against Louisiana-Lafayette.

Gray, from Columbia, Mo., was Georgia’s backup quarterback last season but played minimally behind senior starter Joe Cox.

The Gray/Valdosta State rumor is very real folks. The UGA offensive line had better get it together quickly or this could be a very long 2010 season. The spring game was an embarrassment for them.

As far as Logan, I couldn’t blame the kid. He might thrive somewhere else, but our system isn’t the best fit for him. Consider the fact that Texas played in the MNC game with a true fresham back-up before we jump off a bridge or something. We may actually be better off getting Hutson back up reps anyway because there really is no chance that Logan is ever going to be the guy at Georgia.

I’d rather Logan stay, but he has to make the best decision for him, not us.

When LG came to UGA, we all had visions of an attacking ’spread offense’ that would take advantage of his skill sets. The kid can ‘fly’ and has a strong enough arm for this type of offense. It is pretty clear that UGA will run the ball this year and in most cases the QB is simply going to be the one handing it off. While this suits a redshirt freshman, it is a different story for a rising Junior. If he does leave; we should all wish the kid well and pull for him wherever he decides to go. You couldn’t blame the kid if he left. He’s been loyal to the program. Has done everything that has been asked of him. The truth is that the kid was better suited for Missouri’s offense and maybe should have stayed home.

Logan Gray played better than any other QB in the 2009 G-Day game. We find out half way through last season that Joe Cox had a bad shoulder and does not practice one day a week during the season to keep his arm “fresh”. So, Logan Gray gets no playing time last year playing behind a weak armed QB.
Now, Logan Gray outplays Aaron Murray in the G-Day game, again, and he is still the number 2 QB, again. Now, why would Logan Gray trust Bobo and Richt to look out for him and his playing time this year?

Folks, something is wrong with the QB evaluation in Athens. After doing whatever Logan Gray has done to get playing time over the last couple of years, I do not blame him one bit for thinking about going somewhere else. Bobo and Richt have kept him in limbo his entire time in Athens, and not rewarded him at all for his sacrifices.

Gray clearly made better decisions and plays at QB in this past G-Day game than Murray. I know there were other scrimmages that the players were graded upon, but G-Day is different than a closed scrimmage, and more like a game than a closed scrimmage is. Like Shockley and Joe Cox, Logan Gray also deserves his shot at leading the team. Apparently, he is not getting a fair shot, and he is thinking about going somewhere else.

Bobo and Richt better clean up this mess real soon or the Bulldogs are not going to attract anymore good QB prospects. Go Dogs!!!

Logan is an athlete and wants to play on game day – he should leave with best wishes and find a place to be happy and perhaps play ball – Richt has a real problem at QB and his recruiting, development and retention has been awful. Mason is miles from being SEC ready – if he ever can compete at the SEC level which I personally doubt. Auburn solved their QB problem by going after a former Gator troubled QB and it might work ?

Hope the rumor is unfounded; however, why did Gray mostly field punts and not start after the OK State game? (Joe Cox would not have started for any SEC team last year, and maybe only one ACC team.) If Cox “gives us the best chance for winning” as CMR continued to spin, then maybe he’s a Division II QB after all. Or is it Bobo’s ineptness in coaching up? My primary concern is our inability to properly evaluate talent. When Rennie Curran is the only Dawg drafted before J. Crompton (who looked like a Heisman candidate against Willie’s defense, but resembled a Tech QB in all the other games), then something is bad wrong with our staff. Hate to admit, but just maybe many of you are correct in saying Richt is not head coach material. Anyway, just my opinion.

Gray was given a chance more than once last year to take over from a very inept Joe Cox. I think Cox would have done great in AA just like Gray will, when you don’t have an average 6′ 7″ 300 pound lineman with dexterity coming at you. Most QB’s can’t play in A ball let alone the SEC for one reason or another. LeMay will probably sign at UGA and if Murray play’s good enough LeMay will red shirt next year. That will leave Murray’s senior year sharing playing time with LeMay.

It’s the head coach’s job to create an environment so that a 2nd string qb doesn’t want to transfer right after the depth chart is revealed. He should have waited to announce it right before the season. And he should know he’s only one play away from being the starter. He should think he’s still going to play in games regardless. Dorsey Hill, you’re a good man, but Lewis would be disappointed in your ability to see reality. CMR made a living beating Vandy, Ky, South Carolina, and most of the bottom feeders, early on. How’s he doing now? Even Phat Phil had a great winning percentage just before he was terminated. And, look at Lloyd Carr’s record, too. As you know, we’re not paying Richt $3M for what he did in 2004, ‘05, ‘06, ‘07 ‘08, etc., we’re paying for present/future performance…at least I hope we are. And, bone-headed decisions like not firing Willie two years ago and hanging on to Bobo isn’t winning any converts. By the way, any new BBQ places open up near your home?

Folks this is only a problem if there is an injury.
It’s only a serious problem if there are two injuries.

If I remember correctly:
Johnny Unitas went down.
Gary Cuozzo went down.
Tom Matte went out there with *plays written on his wrist.
*[before it was SOP]
For the Colts’ regular-season finale (a 20-17 win) against the Los Angeles Rams and the following weekend’s one-game playoff at Green Bay (a 13-10 overtime loss resulting from a missed Packer field goal that was erroneously ruled good), Colts head coach Don Shula put a list of plays on a wristband that Matte wore. That wristband is now on display at the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

My Point:
Relax everything will be just fine.
Run the ball. [Ealey/king]
Play great Defense. [Grantham]
**Great kicking game/special teams become special [Belin].

Was the depth chart “released” or was Logan Gray “released”? I hope I read it correctly that the depth chart was released and Logan Gray is still a Bulldog for now, unless the rumor proves true that he is transferring.

I hope Gray stays, we need him. I hear reports Murray looked better than Gray in practice, but I went to G day and Gray was better than Murray. Gray took command and Murray looked nervous and out of synch. Murray may look better in practice, but the true test is how they play in front of a crowd, and at G day, Gray was better.

Don’t count on Murray getting hurt yet. You only can play one QB at a time and Murray was ranked in the top 3 nationally. We will be ok. Gray is showing his immaturity not being loyal, thinking that if he transfers he will actually get a chance at the pro’s. CMR was ranked as one of the best QB’S when he went to Miami and only played a few play his 4 year there, if any. He accepted his best contribution would be as support and learned to be a great coach. Gray will regret leaving by not accepting his limitations on the field and using all the resources available for being a UGA graduate for his next step in life.

I know you will say it is SEC vs ACC, but remember, Tech’s back-up quarterback just transferred when he was an injury away from being the starter. And this in a system where the qb is actually likely to get hurt. So don’t think it can’t happen. I would be surprised though. I would think that life at UGA as a backup QB would be better than life as a starter at Valdosta State. If this was a case of Murray vs Mettenburger, where each thought they had a possible shot at the NFL, then I might think otherwise. But with Logan, it would just be college football for football’s sake. So I guess it comes down does he enjoy life at UGA better than playing football somewhere not as nice. We will see…

Taylor – Tech has Tevin Washington-soph, and Jordan Luallen and David Sims, both scholarship redshirt freshmen behind Nesbitt. They are all QBs recruited for the CPJ offense. Jaybo Shaw would have been in a 4-way QB competition next year as a senior. Washington figures to have the inside track to start in 2011.

I think Shaw chose Ga. Southern because he gets to play in the same offense, and he wants to be a coach like his dad.

You can’t blame Logan if he transfers. He’s been INCREDIBLY loyal to Coach Richt. He threw the same amount of passes, same yp pass average, and 3x less int’s in the 3 scrimmages. He’s been willing to field punts. He beat out Murray over the 3 scrimmages, with a 2.0 td to int ratio compared to Murray’s .67 td to int ratio. 3x better.

He’s an Elite 11 QB.

Now you might rotate the 2 into a gameplan, but the idea of an Elite 11 QB sitting on the bench, when he outplayed the other guy by 3X better, is absurb.

Richt’s not been objective when he chose the QB depth chart.

Bet Richt is regretting letting Mettenberger go now over the beer drinking incident.

If Logan gray couldn’t beat out Joe Cox then what does that say? Who cares if he transfers? He was the back up QB, if Murray is hurt and out for any extended period of time, do you really feel better with Logan Gray as the starter? Do you think he could carry the team? NO! He is not an SEC quarterback. The team would suck with him at QB or it would suck with Mason.

I know Mason is a true freshman but let him be the backup (get more expierience and free up a scholarship for the next two years. Also remember, this would only come into play “IF” Murray was hurt. My point is if Murray goes down, UGA is trouble with or without Gray.

Hopefully this further encourages Lemay to sign with UGA in February. Then you head into next year with Lemay tagged as your next “franchise” QB.

I like Gray but his skill level is really that of a Div 1-AA program like what Tech has. Hopefully he won’t transfer there and become a Taliban.

But in all honesty I’ve been reading about “Gray is going to transfer” ever since he was redshirted. While this new rumor (that was probably started by a rival fan in the first place) may pan out to be true then if he goes, he goes. Some of you guys get your boxers in a wad and act like kids with all of the melodrama. If Murray goes down in injury, Mason will have to come in and become another Buck Belue — ie, hand the ball off to the backs most of the time and only worry about completing 2 or 3 passes a game — until he gets somewhat proficient with the playbook.

In short — Let’s cross that bridge when we get there.

got this from blogs.onlineathens.com

Here are the statistics from all three spring scrimmages (including G-Day):

Zach Mettenberger 23 of 36 (63.9 percent) for 433 yards with 5 TD passes and 1 INT

Richt on record saying Mett would have been #3 on depth chart? How?

Logan Gray 23 of 42 for (54.8 percent) for 280 yards with 2 TD passes and 1 INT

Gray put #2 on depth chart? How?

Aaron Murray 33 of 56 (58.9 percent) for 380 yards with 2 TD passes and 3 INTs

Murray, who threw 3x more int’s than Gray or Mett, #1 on QB Depth chart? How?

That means Gray averaged 2 td to int ratio, Murray .67. 3x better.

Also means both had the SAME EXACT yards per attempt at 6.7 ypa.

Logan Gray got BETTER over the 3 spring scrimmages, Murray got WORSE over the 3 Spring scrimmages.

Logan Gray won the competition, period.

To give it to Murray, UNEARNED, because he likes him, might cost Richt, 2 QB’s.

Players know what’s fair, they could easily throw Murray under the bus, and not catch any of his passes in the Summer and Fall. The players run the ship. Leadership 101.

The program might be spiraling downward, out of control.

It’s not just about stats. Murray has the arm strength to get the ball down field. Logan Gray has an arm like Joe Cox, only worse because Cox started over him last year. Why did players start a TEAM METT facebook page after Richt dismissed Mett? Maybe because they thought Mett had EARNED the #1 QB position.

Why did Mett have better stats than Murray? Maybe the players threw Murray under the bus–intentionally dropped passes, because they thought Mett was being treated unfairly by the coaches—dissed when he was earning it in the 3 scrimmages with a 5 to 1 td to int ratio and a 64% accuracy, elading in yards too?

Richt needs to figure this out–HE does NOT decide who the leader is, the players do. Does he seriously not understand this concept that a team can throw a guy under the bus who they don’t think deserves the leadership title? Justice will be served, count on it. Fair is fair.

I don’t disagree that Logan did not look good. However, I have heard that Bobo has long pumped up Logan with ideas that he will play and it never happened. Due to Cox’s arm issues, there were one, if not more, practices a week where Cox did not practice at all, and Logan took most of the snaps.

Do you recall the story early in the ‘09 after the Ok.St. game that Schlabach broke saying that Logan was going to start the next game vsS.Carolina? Well, the story was absolutely true in the sense that Logan was told that by Bobo. When it got out, the crap hit the fan, and after that Logan was not gonna get a real chance to challenge Cox to avoid a QB controversy…. Bobo has misled & mismanaged Logan since he arrived in Athens…I wish Logan nothing but good luck in the future…G.A.T.A.!!!

Its like i said all along if you dont want to be a Bulldog then we dont need you. Logan is a fine young man and a good football player, but if his heart is not in being a Dawg then let him transfer out with no ill will toward him. The 2010 Dawgs will be just fine with or without him.Aaron Murray is alot better than people know and will do a great job this season. Every College in the country was after him his senior season at Plant High in Tampa. The lack of depth will be an issue but Mason should be able to step in and play if needed. I also heard Buck talking about a prefered walk on Qb from Columbus Ga that had some medical issues last year that kept him from getting an offer. @THUGA, lose to TN,FLA,andGAyTech, and tech man

we have 10 returning starters back from a unit that racked up over 340 rushing yards on yalls home turf last year and you lose your only two good defensive players, on top of this you lose baby thomas and Dwyer who were the only guys who actually DID anything against us last year. and add this on as well: Mark Richt is ten times the coach small Johnson will EVER be. lets face facts, if it werent for VT having a down year and MIA being up and down you wouldnt have even won the division, and even then you barely beat Clemson who was recently blown away by USC!!!!!

Has anyone commenting about Gray actually seen him play? Anyone who has would have known immediately that he is no way, shape or form an SEC QB and will never be one.

Regardless of his lack of experience, Mason is a better backup than Gray, simply based on the fact that he can actually throw the football. The offense he ran in high school is more complex than the one Georgia runs, so the transition will not be that difficult, other than learning how to take a snap from under center and hand the ball off, two things he didn’t do much of in high school.

It would be nice if someone/anyone at the AJC would do their job and find out exactly what ZM did to merit expulsion from the team. Rumors don’t cut it when the truth is out there.

Considering the surrounding talent on offense, Georgia doesn’t need a Heisman candidate at QB to be successful this Fall. Anybody remember how Georgia did with David Greene as a freshman? Both Murray and Mason are more talented than Greene was at the same stage.

Saw Gray play at G-Day, he played tons better than Murray. Murray had no timing on his passes. Murray hit a LB right in the numbers for an int in the red zone instead of checking down, totally panicked from the rush. From the stats I’ve seen, Gray outplayed Murray overall over the 3 public scrimmages. So, if people on this blog are right that Logan Gray stinks, then Murray must be beyond awful, because Logan Gray flat out kicked his butt over the 3 spring scrimmages, so did Mettenberger. Murray was the worst of the 3 quarterbacks in the 3 spring scrimmages. Murray looks like Joe Cox Jr., averaging an interception every 19 passes over the 3 Spring scrimmages (3 int’s out of 57 passes), worse than Joe Cox EVER was. I wouldn’t be talking about how bad Gray is, makes Murray look that much worse.

Last time I checked, the depth chart was not written in stone. If Logan Gray wants the starting job, he needs to earn it. All of you who criticize CMR seem to forget that he has put a lot of QB’s in the NFL (Weinke, Greene, Shockley, Stafford) and even helped Charlie Ward to a Heisman. If Stafford had stayed through his senior year, Joe Cox never would have been a discussion, and the transition to Aaron Murray would have been a lot easier. Gray needs to realize that if he can’t beat out a redshirt freshman, that he is probably not going to start in the NFL. He ought to stick around. As the saying goes, he is one snap away from being on the field.

Three weeks ago we had 3 great quarterbacks fighting for the starting role and options galore. Now we have 1 quarterback, no suitable backups, and six months to play another tough SEC schedule with an average O-line. You can blame fate, but at some point it ocmes back to coaching….Mett’s lapse in disicpline and Richt wasting nearly half the snaps in spring ball on him before ditching him…..the indecision on Gray….neglecting the second tier prospects…… Not bad luck, folks, bad coaching.

Everyone in the SEC knows our players act like clowns and wannabe gangsta’s on the sidelines….open your eyes and ears and you’ll see it yourself. For all our prideful talk about Richt’s class and character, those are two things his teams have not possessed at uGA in the last four years. Logan Gray has behaved with class and loyalty to this point, and professionally no one could fault him for leaving. Richt wouldn’t even let Gray be a QB if Mett hadn’t gotten axed. So, I wish him luck.

Dawg?...gone!!!!

April 26th, 2010
8:48 pm

It’s understandable that some of my fellow Dawg fans are upset and hurt by Gray’s decision to transfer (word is, today’s meeting was just a formality and the die is cast). It’s called “sour grapes.” I wish him luck….some guys just love football and want to play….anywhere. If he had not been “threatened” with re-location to another position so often and openly, he might have stayed, but the coaches obviously lack faith in him and his ability at QB. I admire a guy who would rather start for a team and get bloodied up than a guy satisfied to stand on the sidelines all year just so he can wear a particular team’s colors. Rudy was a loser, folks, he played about one down. Big deal. I’d have admired him more if he’d started for Kent State or Slippery Rock.

If half the Georgia players on the squad over the years had Logan’s attitude, we would have won 5 SEC championships instead of 2.

If Logan wants to transfer, don’t trash the kid. He’s been a good Dawg and we should all wish him the best.

You people saying otherwise need to just shut the hell up!

April 26th, 2010

Logan Gray has outplayed Aaron Murray in the last TWO G-Day games. Gray led his team downfield with better decision making and consistent play during the G-Day game ten days ago. Seriously, folks, did anyone watch that game? Mettenberger clearly outplayed everyone, but he was not given a seoond chance even though formal charges have not even been decided. Now, Gray is deciding to leave since he was never given a REAL opportunity at winning the position despite having better statistics and play compared to the competition that remains.

Richt should have never named Murray or Gray as number one since there are only two QBs left with Mason coming in this summer. The QB competition should have been left open with the summer camp to resolve the question of who is the starting QB. Now, we have more “issues”. Bobo and Richt are not looking good in this one at all. Poor decision making continues to be a problem in Athens. Go Dogs!!

Logan should go play with a mid-major D1 or a D2 program, be happy, and live life.

Our problem is really with CMR’s retention and recruiting of players. The proof is in the pudding and I don’t mean a measure of NFL draft pics. I’m talking real world W’s and we really are back to being a second class team vis-a-vis Florida, LSU, Alabama. We had some great years, but not enough of them. What’d we have? 3 or 4 really good ones? Seems like forever.

No one pulled harder for Logan than I did.I had visions of spread offense packages mixed in with smashmouth between the tackels running and Green,King and Wooten breaking teams backs.
But truthfully, though we haven’t seen much of Gray, when he was out there he seemed WAY TOO nervous. On the run option plays he did have, and they were few,he almost always made the wrong read because he was so nervous out there;and it didn’t seem like he could take command of the huddle, something you need in 1-A ball.
I hope he stays and they get him on the field because once he relaxes a bit I think he could be very dangerous. If he leaves then I hope him the best of luck.

Yet another arrest and suspension today. Interestingly, every time the AJC reports one of these, it always says “Comments are closed.” I’ll bet they are.

How can any of you UGA fans have a shred of respect for this program that spends half its time handling arrests and bailing players out of jail? This is Mark Richt and the whole “win at any cost” mentality that has ruled at UGA for decades. The funny thing is that UGA still can’t win the big game despite having so many players who obviously have no morals or self discipline.

So all of you go right ahead and keep on pulling for these goons. Don’t even think about whether Richt needs to consider the maturity and morals of the players he recruits.

I understand Gray wanting to play. I think he should do what is best for himself. I do think he has been given every opportunity to win the starting QB job through practice, scrimmage, and experience. He couldn’t unseat Joe Cox…..JOE COX! Cox was a serviceable SEC quarterback, but not great. Gray didn’t even rise to the level of competition where coaches thought he earned meaningful playing time. You have to do what you have to do. AltamahaDawg – I looked that up a few minutes ago. The 2006 transfer rule change prohibits a rising senior from transferring to another Div. 1 school. This is an excerpt from The Sporting News article:

“Previously, players who met the requirements of the one-time transfer exception could go to FCS schools and play right away regardless of how many years of eligibility they had remaining. Now players with one year left must decide between toughing out often difficult situations at their big-name programs or stepping down to Division II and taking a chance at regional schools such as Central Washington, North Alabama or West Texas A&M.

The NCAA said it changed the rule over concern players were transferring for purely athletic reasons and a “market” for top-tier talent had been created by FCS schools seeking one-year hired guns. To make sure athletes are committed to the schools, they now must have at least two years of eligibility remaining to be allowed to play right away.”

Delbert I think the key there is the ‘exception’. You DO sit out a year to transfer to another D-1 school irrespective of your class. In some cases they grant exceptions to that. Hardship, family issue, coach stole your girlffriend. Playing time, or lack thereof, probably doesnt cut it.

Jones – Look at it this way. If CMR showed the post-spring game depth chart with Gray #1, he risked losing Murray or Mettenberger, who otherwise would always be in lock-step. That is why I thought CMR should pull the redshirt on Murray last year, get him game experience, and separate him from Mettenberger by 1 year. Now it looks like the whole thing is crashing down. Murray with no game experience, Mettenberger kicked off the team, and Gray about to walk away. Very poor management decisions, in my opinion.

Maddog, what is this history of injuries? broke a bone, then recovered faster than anyone has ever seen, which is the real story there. Then strained an elbow, but has since thrown way more ball than before he did.

So this kid has been playing football for what 10-15 yrs and he broke a bone and got tendenitus (that it seems to me most player have some kind of similar issue with from time to time). And we probably wouldnt have heard a word about his elbow, as we dont about most stuff like that IF it wasnt direcetly in the conversation about the 3 -way QB care.

You have to think Murray will screw this up, by either getting injured (done it every year for last two years–Richt will have no choice), or by continuing to throw interceptions (fans will go ape nuts), so if Logan stays, a very good chance he’ll get to start at a top 10 school. This is his best shot. Richt should consider doing this like the Green/Shockey thing, get the #2 guy a lot of reps in case of injury, or if #1 falters or goes Pro early. Plus, the #2 cvould out-perform the #1 if given the chance.

Well, I understand how Gray would feel that way – they didn’t give him a shot last year!!! UGA should have, although I am confident Murray is the right choice this year, given Gray a chance last year to play more. Didn’t even give the guy half a game against Tennessee Tech. That upset me then, so I understand where Gray is coming from. Still, I hope he stays and gets playing time at a different position, returning punts and as a slot receiver.

AltamahaDawg – On the transfer rule, I think the distinction is between Div. 1A and Div. 1AA (2006 terminology). I understand it to say that transferring from a FBS school to a FCS school is okay without sitting out a year if you have 2 years of eligibility left. The Sporting News article highlights the positive effect on Div. II schools, who *can* take an immediate transfer student from any Div. 1 school for the senior year. Jaybo Shaw has completed 2 years of eligibility at Ga. Tech, and he transfers to Ga. Southern and gets to play 2 years without sitting out, I’m pretty sure.

Ryan Perrilloux spent 2006 and 2007 at LSU, and he transferred in May 2008 (kicked off the LSU team) to Jacksonville State and was eligible to play immediately. He started at QB in 2008 and 2009.

If he wants to play at the next level who can blame him? He would need to do something now. Following Stafford and then Cox has hurt not only him but the others. In fact in the long run I think Stafford actually hurt the program because he never intended to play the 4 yrs and hindered Cox’s development as well as Gray’s and Murray’s. The RS soph will move back to WR. They had a January enrollee QB/WR also, and have another freshman QB showing up for Fall. All these kids are scholarship recruits. They just had another QB “commit” (for what that is worth) for 2011.

Florida Dawg: We had Greene for four years with Shockley as the back up. I mean when Greene left he only had more wins than any other QB (until McCoy this year). Shockley did pretty well. Then Richt had Stafford for four years. Cox for one. Now we have Murray (now way to tell what he will do). Mettenberger was also an elite 11 QB along with Murray. I may be mistaken, but Gray was an elite 11 QB as well. Richt has done fine bringing in top talent. You can’t blame Richt for Rememerton. You can’t blame Richt for Gray “considering” transfferring. I’m really not that upset with Gray for considering it. To me it just says he wants to play, he wants to be on the field. That desire has gotten him as far as it has and who knows where else it may take him at UGA or elsewhere. I wish him the best, hope he stays at UGA, but the young man has to make the decision that is best for him.

NC Dawg – Compare and contrast Gray’s situation with Perrilloux’s. Perrilloux was a multiple-screwup in 2 years at LSU, and is very talented. He left for one of those schools you categorized, but not by his choice; he was kicked off the LSU team (after beating Tech in the “Peach” bowl.) So he played 2 years in 1AA, and now is a free agent signee with the Vikings. Could Gray do that? He was a Super 11 in high school, they say. He would really have to show some wholly different level of performance from his 1st 2 years a Georgia to get a look by the NFL as a free agent.

So basically last year if tech had a guy kicked off and a guy transfer, you’d have a starter 2 newbies, maybe a guy who has played QB but really a WR. I’m saying, thats where everybody would be.

And BTW, if we are going to look at is through the prism of hindsight, I think Richt looks brilliant now to RS Murray. How bad would it have been to have wasted a year of eligibility for no other reason (not for any significant playing time, not to improve the teams chances of winning), just for the sole purpose of spreading out a year between him and a guy that ain’t even on the team now? Plus all that would have done is give Mett one year after Murray left, and by then somebody all new is in the equation.

I am a firm believer in playing a guy if he is ready to help the team, if not RS him and forget all the if and buts. New recruits, injuries, any number of things completely make that all impossible to predict.

McCoy okay, Bradford definitely, but Tebow? The kid got hurt 1 time and didn’t even miss a single game because of it. Broke his leg in high school, and played through it to finish a playoff game… a win btw. I have no idea about Herschel; but he sure didn’t seem injury prone to me at the time.

Sanford Drive,
Thats funny! People believe throwing the guy in against one of our hardest competitors after the STARTER (Joe “Pansy Arm” Cox) was stinking up the joint. CMR should have benched Cox afer the first game and let one of the young QBs play the rest of the year but nope!! Now CMR put the starting job on a silver platter for Joe Cox because if I remember correctly Logan Gray out played Cox during the G-game last year but CMR still went with the SENIOR!! I hope Logan Gray does tranfer! The guy was red-shirted then pushed to the side after competing for the starting job. Even after EVERY one in the world knew Cox was not the answer. Now, I hope Logan does go somewhere at least he will get a FAIR shake because he is not getting one in UGA.

Cedrick, if there was an ounce of reality that CMR played folks according to class, then we wouldn’t even be having this conversation about the junior Gray and the freshman Murray now would we? I love how folks bring up that whole “only played because he was older” and just choose to ignore the many examples of it being absolutely not the case.

Would it be fair to say that sometimes guys get the start and sometimes they are older and sometimes they are not?

You may disagree with thier assessment of who gives them the best chance to win, thats fine. But why not just say that rather than repeating some worn out cliche’ that doesnt hold up.

It has already been noted that Logan Gray would be but one injury away from taking the reins as the UGA starting QB……….With that said, I personally don’t think the kid will transfer. What this is all about in my humble opinion, is Logan Gray flexing his “capital” muscle, knowing if he left it would put the DOGS in an awkward position. With that said, mabe Mr. Gray is simply solidifing his place as a situational QB if he doesn’t win the QB job outright……..Think about it, kid must be doing well in his business class where they study the art of the deal. If all goes well for Murray, no problems, we get a few wins under our belts, under Mr. Logan Gray’s plan, he would be promised playing time, with packages put in just for him to run. Not what you would call co-QBs……..But something much more substancial than sitting on the pines with a large drool on his bottom lip……..some way he could prove he is worthy of wearing the RED and Black and directing the BULLDOG attack. Pretty smart if you ask me, also sort of resembles blackmail…………Me? I would probubly tell the kid, “Don’t let the door hit you in the ass”……..because I believe in TEAM first me last. Yes it will be interesting to see how this one unravells, But I don’t thik Logan Gray is going anywhere……..just working on a power play………….Dude will be a beast in business, thats for sure !!!

Doesn’t UGA have a QB attending the Georgia Military College who is slated to transfer once he is academically eligible? Maybe it was a WR so I could be wrong. The bigger question is what happens to the scholarships when a scholarship player is dismissed from the team? Does UGA lose the scholarships for a whole season or can we take one of the scholarships slated for Robinson or Mettenberger and offer it to a JC transfer QB for this fall? I’ll take a JC QB as a backup over a true freshman any day.

I think it would be a huge mistake for Logan to leave but that is exactly what people at OU told Troy Aikman when he packed his bags and headed to UCLA. Getting away from the OU after his injury was the best move he ever made.(2nd best if you count Lorrie Morgan from back in the day)

That is a bad deal that has been apparent in recent years about the use of Quarterbacks. If the back up is not used sparingly when a game is out of hand we have the same thing every year. Either a one year starter as in Shockley and Cox or a situation like we have now. An unexperience redshirt junior that was bench warmer last year, a redshirt freshman that is named a starter, a redshirt freshman that was eliminated and an unproven high school player. The biggest problem I have observed is when we would get ahead as when Stafford was playing, the defense would not hold the lead and therefore Cox or Grey never got on the field. Somewhere the offense has to keep the quarterbacks happy or we will always have a situation that will be delicate. Especially if we sign two top QB’s in the same year. We had this before with Hybal, and two others. Even Joe T. would have been better if he had had some reasonable experience in the previous years…..and another thing Grey sat two years behind Stafford and one behind Cox. Cox sat four years behind Stafford and others. Why were these two top qb recruits not developed enough to really become great and make more of a difference. Did we recruit wrong or just not develop them.

I heard this rumor on Sunday but no one (AJC, Bleacherreport.com, etc.) would confirm it.

This issue started last year. Gray, and the Bulldog Nation, were told that he would be used in certain situations and run certain offensive sets. None of which occurred. Gray came in when we were down 20+ points late in the game, when everyone, including UGA VII knew we had to throw the ball. Of course, no success when the D knows the play in advance.

Now, he is one play (injury) away from being the starter, but that’s of little consolation to him at this point. We’ll see what happens…. don’t look for any of the walk-on/backups to be any help, nor will Hutson Mason, at least not until at least mid-season. Mason will need quite a bit of time to learn the offense.

Here is the core of our problems- we get all these highly rated QBs and only one can play….you dont see UF with this problem….or Bama. Why do we need 3-4 blue chip QBs in the same class or two?

I’ll tell you why Richt stock piles QB’s. He knows his coaches aren’t the best and hopes
one of the kids can excell all by himself with out much coaching. See M. Stafford, he would have been a 1st round NFL choice if he had played at Slippery Rock–Georgia needed him, he didn’t need Georgia.

It still amazes me why all these QB’s go to Georgia though——-just don’t get it.

If he is smart he would leave, you will not get any better sitting on some ones bench or calling signals. I am pretty sure he would like to play at the next level at QB or what ever position, so he needs to play at the college level. I agree its bad recruiting at QB by Bobo. NFL Draft another boost for UF recruiting
by Edward Aschoff

What a very, very long commercial for Urban Meyer’s football program. I can just imagine Meyer sitting back in a recliner with his favorite beverage in one hand and his cell phone in the other. Text messages from recruits flowing in and a grin from ear to ear stuck to his face.

Florida had nine players drafted, the most of any school, and what do most high school athletes want from their college football experience? A shot at a professional career. Like Meyer’s outburst at a reporter earlier this spring, this kind of national attention is the stuff recruits eat up. It’s not like ESPN decided before the draft to constantly talk about Florida (although all that Tim Tebow bashing says otherwise). Try as you might to get away from it, the draft was littered with Gators highlights.

“I’m proud of all of our players who now have a chance to fulfill a life-long dream and play in the NFL,” Meyer said. “When we were recruiting them we sat in their living rooms and we talked about graduating, winning championships and going to the NFL. It’s something special to see that happen.”

Meyer’s NFL card isn’t tucked away neatly anymore when he walks into a family’s home trying to sway their son over to the orange and blue. That card is stitched right on every shirt he wears in there. It may be more visible than he is.

Meyer’s 2006 recruiting class, arguably his best all-around class, produced four draft picks this year. Percy Harvin was a part of that class and he was taken in the first round last year and was the NFL Rookie of the Year. His 2007 class produced five draft picks, including offensive lineman Maurkice Pouncey, who went in the first round to the Pittsburgh Steelers. That’s 10 from those two classes in the last two years.

Let’s not forget that even with all the negativity surrounding Tebow and the draft, he was selected in the first round by the Denver Broncos. The guy scouts constantly ripped for his mechanics went in the first round. That’s definitely a selling point for the Gators.

What must have brought yet another giddy grin to Meyer’s face was when he looked up at the end of the draft and saw that in-state rivals Florida State and Miami were worlds away from the Gators in the draft. Miami finished with four players drafted (the first came off the board in the third round) and Florida State had three players taken. In 2009 FSU had just one player taken — defensive end Everette Brown in the second round to the Carolina Panthers. Miami had just one selection as well and it came in the sixth round.

As for Florida’s SEC rivals, Tennessee had six players selected and Georgia had five. Alabama, which Florida fans should get accustomed to seeing more often, had seven players taken.

Florida cleaned up in the draft this year and that certain adds a huge element to Florida’s recruiting weaponry. Atmosphere and a state-of-the-art facilities help, but proving that you can be a direct pipeline to the NFL usually becomes the biggest selling point for schools. Florida’s got that last part covered.

Personally I don’t “blame” him. This is all voluntary duty. His football career has 2 years left, and then it’s over. Do what ya got to do. Coaches do what they got to do.

However, there are about 100 guys on a team, and half of them hardly ever play and the majority of them are never going to be starters. Granted QB is a bit different because it doesnt lend itself to substitutions. How does any team have more than 1 QB on the team if riding the bench is totally unacceptable. FAR more highly recruited, (could be playing more at a lower level) QB’s are riding the bench than playing every year. Same for any position in varying degrees.

If not getting the PT that you had hoped for after being a star in HS was the only criteria for sticking to your original college choice, then no school in the country would ever field a consistant team.

So while I don’t find fault with him, I don’t think the excuses that some fans are making hold up very well. The other solution for PT would be the same one that every player in college has. It is what it is.

I am positive that he is getting support and advice from Mark Richt, Who will be supportive no matter what he decides, and help him get situated someplace else if it comes to that. But as a guy who spent his college career as a back up QB, I am pretty sure he also painting a bigger picture for Logan.

It’s time to put an end to the gossip and speculation. It’s time to stop arguing with bloggers from other schools and anti-Richt folks. Who cares how many times a team has been ranked, how many championships, how many bowls, etc.? It has nothing to do with 2010. The 2009 season has NOTHING to do with 2010. NOTHING. Home or Visitor win loss records… winning % in rain when the QB is left handed… winning % with runners who prefer Gatorade…. How many times a team has beat our guys or our guys have beat a team…. NONE of this matters!!!!!

All that feeding into the hype and histeria does is compromises your team and makes the season less enjoyable for yourselves. NOTHING MATTERS right now excwept the health and well being of the current players making their way through summer. It’s not like the criminal cops in Atlanta that probably have side businesses involving the thugs at Tech, not to mention they have daily muggings and beatings to deal with on Tech’s joke of a campus, but 1 out of 3 cops in Atlanta have CRIMINAL RECORDS!!! So obviously they side with the criminals that Tech puts on their athletic teams. Not the case for the Athens police. Drinking alcohol is a part of life. It’s high time we as citizens demand a decriminalization of this similar to how it’s treated in most European countries. Good first steps would be the following:

1) 18 as legal drinking age, aiming for lower
2) no “open container laws” anywhere
3) no law against “public intoxication”. If the person isn’t breaking a real law, that in itself shouldn’t be a crime.

Unrelated but still relevant here: 4) resisting arrest verbally is a perfectly normal response if you feel you’re being wronged. Unless you’re fleeing a scene or attacking an officer that should not be a crime.

CMR is right to stick with his offensive system as opposed to changing it to fit Logan Gray. Gray proved last year that his skills are not suited to run that system. He’s not a bad athlete. Just a bad fit for CMR’s offense. I respect Gray’s decision to move on. He should. UGA got spoiled with the patience of Shockley, Tereshinki, and Cox. There’s one big difference with Gray. If Murray is the starter in the fall, Gray will never sniff the starting job. His eligibility expires before Murray. So what’s in it for him? He should find a I-AA system that fits his skills (i.e. Valdosta State or Montana (seriously)).

As for UGA’s backup situation, let’s give Mason a chance to get some back up reps. If anything happens to Murray, Mason probably would be awful (as the Texas QB was in the 1st half until the game slowed down for him and the coaches adjusted the game plan for what he could do instead of what McCoy could do). If Mason had to start, then the game plan would be simplified for him and become much more conservative – you know, the good old Vince Dooley play book. That’s when the punting game becomes a real weapon (don’t laugh, Bill Parcells won a Super Bowl with that offense).

With Gray gone, I can’t imagine UGA won’t get LeMay and another 2 or 3 star QB next signing day. LeMay will redshirt in 2011, Mason will be an experienced backup in 2011, and the 2 or 3 star true freshman QB will fill out the depth chart. Then, if Lemay is as good as advertised, UGA is set for the future: Murray (2010-12 (when he leaves after his junior year a la Stafford)) then Lemay (2013-15 (when he leaves after his junior year)).

See nothing to get all worked up about. CMR actually has a good plan. Didn’t Charlie Ward (Heisman winner – 1993) follow Casey Weldon (Heisman runner-up – 1991)? UGA is FSU north (in too many ways!).

This kid needs to come to Georgia State. We already got a TE from Auburn, two OLs from Tech (Yandell and Gilbert) and Gray would be icing on the cake. He could play immediately and spend the last two years of his career etching his name in the record books as the first starting QB in GSU history. His foot-speed alone would be perfect for the Dome.

I just proposed to the fellows in my frat that I’d like to boldly go where no man has gone before with one of them. Uncontrolable giggling ensued. A few minutes later when calm had resume, my buddy Jugdish explained that it wouldn’t be possible to go where no man had gone before with nay of them. So, Tim…..why are some blogs open for comment and others, not?

Well Jim, a long time ago in a more civilized era, newspapers actually wrote these “blogs” that they called a story or an article. In this era they only printed news that was important or relevant to other people. They had these printed on a piece of paper and sold them to people. If you wanted to comment on a story you had to find someone who gave a rip what you thought about the news or you could just talk to yourself.

Now, since newspapers have decided to give their product away for free online, they have to generate “page-hits” in order to sell fractions of pennies worth of advertising. So this particular paper has noticed that UGA is popular and the only thing more popular is for other school fans to make fun of UGA. So they search high and wide for any story remotely conected to UGA in order to post something you will click on. Then once you’ve read that story you have to make another page click or two to find a space to comment on the story. So by spreading out the content they can get you to click more pages than if they simply let you comment on every story.

The real sad part in all of this is that Journalistic integrity has fallen by the wayside. Instead of letting non-violent misdemeanors fade into the obscurity they deserve, they put them in prominent places on their website where actual news should go.

Wow.

Put yourself in Gray’s shoes. Your a former highly touted recruit, in year 3 at the program, you outperform a freshman in the Spring Game (didn’t see it, but the stats seem clear enough), and you start the fall behind on the depth chart to only the second best freshmen quarterback option the team had before the other guy got booted.

Is there much more the coach could do to indicate that he has no faith in you as his starting QB?

It’s not like the kid grew up in Georgia listening to Munson and dreaming of suiting up for the Dawgs – I assume he came all the way from Missouri because he thought he could be UGA’s QB. Hate to see Georgia end up so thin at QB, but hard to blame the kid for thinking about transferring.

Tim Tucker, sir :

How convenient that responses are closed to the # 94 Arrest / Suspension in the 1st 9-Years of the Coach Richt Era.

Redshirted last season, listed as # 3 in the Depth Chart on the OL released by Coach Richt just 2 days ago, yet ANOTHER – the # 94 Arrrested / Suspended Georgia Bulldogs’ Football Player in the Coach Richt Era, 38 in the last 3 years alone according to David Halle last week, is in the Negative News.

Congratulations.

For a program in 2010 who last even went to The SEC Championship Game in 2005, this is not good news. 4 since Spring Practice have been Arrested / Suspended and 3 of the 4 have been kicked off the team.

I was wrong.

I said May 5 the next Georgia Bulldogs’ Football Player on this roster and on this Depth Chart just relased 2 days ago by Coach Richt, would be arrested.

April 27, and I am wrong.

May 27, the 85th Georgia Bulldog Player Arrested / Suspended in the 9-Year Coach Richt Era will be Arrested / Suspended.

1 a month for 9 years running Arrested / Suspended.

I have the URL Links for the last 38 in the just the last 3 years.

And, I have the URL Links for the 94 Arrested / Suspended in the Coach Richt Era.

Available for those of you who think this goes on at every school.

Not 94 Arrested / Suspended in the 9-Year Coach Richt Era, it does NOT go on at other schools at this # 94 Arrested / Suspended in the only 9-Year Coach Richt Era, it does not.

Wrong.

Ed.

This is Logan Gray’s 4th year in this system this year he just started.

Logan Gray has completed 0 passes for touchdowns. He has completed 5 total passes in his 4th year now, and has thrown 2 Interceptions, one of those to a wide open best defender on the Florida football team who has beat us 17 of the last 20 for a TD for the defense against Logan Gray.

He also OPENLY criticized the offensive coaching staff at UGA in the newspapers repeatedly.

But, then again so too has EVERYONE else.

Except for patrick M. Sulley.

ugaaccountant, sir or madam as the case may be,

Since just Spring Practice started THIS SEASON, our would be Starting Quarterback reached his hand up the skirt of a college girl not working at the bar in Valdosta (Remerton.)

Then, the next week, the # 1 Football Recruit in the state of Indiana for all football players at all positions and one of the top recruits in the nation at his position, beat up his little girlfriend AGAIN, violating his PROBATION for his earlier arrest for beating her up, a student at UGA.

Then last week a guy who had 3 punts in the G-Day game hit a guy in the face for all to see and was arrested, drunk.

All 3 were THROWN OFF THE TEAM by Coach Richt.

But, according to you, ugaaccountant, these are NON-VIOLENT MEANINGLESS CRIMES.

Then, last night a 4th player listed on Coach Richt’s Official April 2010 Depth Chart, was charged with DUI and suspended / arrested.

Which 1 of these 4 is the NON-VIOLENT meaningless crime you refer to please ?

I’m lost in your excuses.

Logan Gray can go to any other SEC or other Bowl Subdivision school and play the year after this, his 5th year.

Logan Gray can do to any other non Bowl Subdivision 1-A school and play this year his 4th including redshirt year, and play next year, his Redshirt Senior Year – like Georgia State or Georgia Southern, for example.

Our Graduation Rates are going down the tubes.

The NCAA gives the recruits 6 years to graduate. If they are in good standing academically, and transfer, it does NOT count against the school they transfer from in the official NCAA GSR Graduation Success Rate.

Zach Mettenberger and Montez Robinson, 2 of the highest rated recruits in the nation at their positions, obviously get The University of Georgia a Zero on Graduation Success Rate being KICKED OFF THE TEAM.

Coach Richt is already in the bottom half of The SEC in Graduation Success Rate, and is failling even further with this off-season turmoil, exactly the same as every other off-season turnoil here with an Arrest / Suspension once EVERY month for 9 years running.

Jimmy

April 27th, 2010

This just proves that in today’s world, you better win big or players who are not receiving playing time will transfer.

UGA needs to start adjusting their recruiting philosophy. They need to start looking for players who want to be a part of the University of Georgia. Instead of looking for players who want to use the university as a stepping stone to the NFL.
