QB Gray meets with Richt; no decision yet on transfer (UPDATED)

(Updated 8 p.m.)

Logan Gray, Georgia’s No. 2 quarterback, met Monday with coach Mark Richt to discuss his status on the team and the possibility of transferring to another school.

Gray remained with the Bulldogs as of Monday night, associate athletics director Claude Felton said, but “he is weighing options for the remainder of his playing career.”

The uncertainty about Gray’s future surfaced four days after Richt revealed the Bulldogs’ post-spring depth chart, which has Gray, a junior, behind redshirt freshman Aaron Murray at quarterback.

Richt’s dismissal of Zach Mettenberger from the team on April 18 left Murray and Gray as the only quarterbacks in the Georgia program until recruit Hutson Mason arrives this summer from Marietta’s Lassiter High.

So if Gray decides to transfer, that would leave a true freshman, Mason, as Murray’s apparent backup in the fall.

There was no indication Monday night that Gray has made a decision. He was not available for comment.

Gray has two years of eligibility remaining at Georgia but, under NCAA transfer rules, would have only one year to play if he moved to another Division I-A school. He would retain two years of eligibility if he transferred to a school in a lower division.

Richt said last week that Murray’s spot atop the depth chart does not guarantee he will be the starter in the Sept. 4 season opener against Louisiana-Lafayette.

Gray, from Columbia, Mo., was Georgia’s backup quarterback last season but played minimally behind senior starter Joe Cox.

on second thought, who cares. this kid never touched the ball except to fair catch it or throw an interception. let him transfer if he wants.

Who cares if he transfers? He was the back up QB, if Murray is hurt and out for any extended period of time, do you really feel better with Logan Gray as the starter? Do you think he could carry the team? NO! He is not an SEC quarterback. The team would suck with him at QB or it would suck with Mason.

I know Mason is a true freshman but let him be the backup (get more expierience and free up a scholarship for the next two years. Also remember, this would only come into play “IF” Murray was hurt. My point is if Murray goes down, UGA is trouble with or without Gray.

Hopefully this further encourages Lemay to sign with UGA in February. Then you head into next year with Lemay tagged as your next “franchise” QB.

LG just hasn’t created significant enough results on the field for me to get upset about this. Sure, I would NEVER have played Joe Cox over LG. EVER. And maybe LG is better than Murray, who knows. But I haven’t seen LG actually do anything significant on the field that would give me heartburn over losing him.

PS we need Lemay, yesterday.

Ken – I think that is why CMR made the point right after the spring game that the QB depth chart would be reevaluated for the fall. He wanted to keep Gray committed to Georgia. That’s is my opinion, based only on what I read into the situation.

I like Gray but his skill level is really that of a Div 1-AA program like what Tech has. Hopefully he won’t transfer there and become a Taliban.

But in all honesty I’ve been reading about “Gray is going to transfer” ever since he was redshirted. While this new rumor (that was probably started by a rival fan in the first place) may pan out to be true then if he goes, he goes. Some of you guys get your boxers in a wad and act like kids with all of the melodrama. If Murray goes down in injury, Mason will have to come in and become another Buck Belue — ie, hand the ball off to the backs most of the time and only worry about completing 2 or 3 passes a game — until he gets somewhat proficient with the playbook.

In short — Let’s cross that bridge when we get there.

Good riddance. My only memory of Logan Grey when he hit Brandon Spikes (UF Linebacker) in stride for a touchdown during the UF game.

It dont seem right to use Logan Gray on punts to get accustomed to the speed of the SEC and then not give him the opportunity to start.

Logan did not look good when he got into the Florida game even though it was mop up duty. He looked like he was afraid of deer eyes.

Joe Cox got his chance.

Logan is gone

If Georgia has to use a true freshman, one who played in an offense not resembling Georgia’s, I would think that the playbook would be extremely limited.

This is still a rumor. Remember the taxi cab incident which turned out to be false? Techies, go ahead and celebrate. We’ll break your heart again in Nov just like we did 8 out of the last 9 times. I think we can beat y’all with a scout team walk-on QB if we have to.

What is the probability that a quarterback will get injured in Bobo’s offense. Especially with the ample depth on offensive line. Georgia doesn’t play a spread option, so the odds are minimal. Don’t get me wrong, its not a good thing to be thin at QB, but the bottom line is that Murray will start and finish every game this year. One way or another.

got this from blogs.onlineathens.com

Here are the statistics from all three spring scrimmages (including G-Day):

Zach Mettenberger 23 of 36 (63.9 percent) for 433 yards with 5 TD passes and 1 INT

Richt on record saying Mett would have been #3 on depth chart? How?

Logan Gray 23 of 42 for (54.8 percent) for 280 yards with 2 TD passes and 1 INT

Gray put #2 on depth chart? How?

Aaron Murray 33 of 56 (58.9 percent) for 380 yards with 2 TD passes and 3 INTs

Murray, who threw 3x more int’s than Gray or Mett, #1 on QB Depth chart? How?

That means Gray averaged 2 td to int ratio, Murray .67. 3x better.

Also means both had the SAME EXACT yards per attempt at 6.7 ypa.

Logan Gray got BETTER over the 3 spring scrimmages, Murray got WORSE over the 3 Spring scrimmages.

Logan Gray won the competition, period.

To give it to Murray, UNEARNED, because he likes him, might cost Richt, 2 QB’s.

Players know what’s fair, they could easily throw Murray under the bus, and not catch any of his passes in the Summer and Fall. The players run the ship. Leadership 101.

The program might be spiraling downward, out of control.

Ouch!

How could the situation be any worse than if Gray had to play? He can’t win in the SEC. The worst possible scenario would be that we had someone else that couldn’t win in the SEC.

Bud,

It’s not just about stats. Murray has the arm strength to get the ball down field. Logan Gray has an arm like Joe Cox, only worse because Cox started over him last year. It makes more sense to get Murray ready for the future than to waste a year on Gray who won’t be around much longer. Plus, Murray has the tools to develop into a great QB. Gray doesn’t.

Why did players start a TEAM METT facebook page after Richt dismissed Mett? Maybe because they thought Mett had EARNED the #1 QB position.

Why did Mett have better stats than Murray? Maybe the players threw Murray under the bus–intentionally dropped passes, because they thought Mett was being treated unfairly by the coaches—dissed when he was earning it in the 3 scrimmages with a 5 to 1 td to int ratio and a 64% accuracy, elading in yards too?

Richt needs to figure this out–HE does NOT decide who the leader is, the players do. Does he seriously not understand this concept that a team can throw a guy under the bus who they don’t think deserves the leadership title? Justice will be served, count on it. Fair is fair.

We probably should reserve judgement. I wasn’t “roiled” until this article told me I was. I will say this. If a guy doesn’t want to help his team win, perhaps greener pastures are in store. I’ll take a freshman and a walk-on who want to play… really want to play for UGA any day.

The real truth……..Gray knows it’s only a matter of time before the whole offensive line
has been kicked off of the team. Deciding now would be a good time to “get out
of Dawg Dodge” before Richt asks him to play OL.

I agree, when the players get the feeling that the coaches don’t care about performance, then WHY TRY? Why even play for that Coach? The whole system breaks down is coaches play favorites instead of base decisions on things players deem as fair. We are seeing a breakdown of catastrophic proportions, something’s wrong in Oz folks, and the players have had enough. Looks like Coach Richt has lost the respect of his players. Could be an exodus of transfers.
