QB Gray meets with Richt; no decision yet on transfer (UPDATED)

(Updated 8 p.m.)

Logan Gray, Georgia’s No. 2 quarterback, met Monday with coach Mark Richt to discuss his status on the team and the possibility of transferring to another school.

Gray remained with the Bulldogs as of Monday night, associate athletics director Claude Felton said, but “he is weighing options for the remainder of his playing career.”

The uncertainty about Gray’s future surfaced four days after Richt revealed the Bulldogs’ post-spring depth chart, which has Gray, a junior, behind redshirt freshman Aaron Murray at quarterback.

Richt’s dismissal of Zach Mettenberger from the team on April 18 left Murray and Gray as the only quarterbacks in the Georgia program until recruit Hutson Mason arrives this summer from Marietta’s Lassiter High.

So if Gray decides to transfer, that would leave a true freshman, Mason, as Murray’s apparent backup in the fall.

There was no indication Monday night that Gray has made a decision. He was not available for comment.

Gray has two years of eligibility remaining at Georgia but, under NCAA transfer rules, would have only one year to play if he moved to another Division I-A school. He would retain two years of eligibility if he transferred to a school in a lower division.

Richt said last week that Murray’s spot atop the depth chart does not guarantee he will be the starter in the Sept. 4 season opener against Louisiana-Lafayette.

Gray, from Columbia, Mo., was Georgia’s backup quarterback last season but played minimally behind senior starter Joe Cox.

This isn’t about Logan Gray, nobody cares about him now. This is now about how many UGA players who are arrested each year. Who cares anymore about the fellow Grey, he’s just one of many thugs at THUGAy who need to be investigated,

Get the Governor and the General Assembly on this investigation. Fire every player and coach and start over with moral, ethical people. Send the current crop of goons and felons packing.

Richt has to got to sit every player down and explain to them that the “good ol’ boy” cops in Athens have a targets on the backs, and fronts, of every single UGA athlete in that town. It’s not like the criminal cops in Atlanta that probably have side businesses involving the thugs at Tech, not to mention they have daily muggings and beatings to deal with on Tech’s joke of a campus, but 1 out of 3 cops in Atlanta have CRIMINAL RECORDS!!! So obviously they side with the criminals that Tech puts on their athletic teams. Not the case for the Athens police. They are actual cops that do not side with breaking the law, no matter how minor the offense may be.

Confirmed rumors are that Aaron Murray is in Richt’s office this morning And that raised voices are being heard. An unidentified probable starting offensive lineman is in there too.

It’s beginning to look like the UGA team may not have any unarrested players by September.

Drinking alcohol is a part of life. It’s high time we as citizens demand a decriminalization of this similar to how it’s treated in most European countries. Good first steps would be the following:

1) 18 as legal drinking age, aiming for lower
2) no “open container laws” anywhere
3) no law against “public intoxication”. If the person isn’t breaking a real law, that in itself shouldn’t be a crime.

Unrelated but still relevant here: 4) resisting arrest verbally is a perfectly normal response if you feel you’re being wronged. Unless you’re fleeing a scene or attacking an officer that should not be a crime.

It looks like this is the beginning of the end for Adams, Evans, Richt, and others who have kept the obscenity going for so long, The people of Georgia are sick to their stomach over the huge embarrassment that UGA has become for all of us.

CMR is right to stick with his offensive system as opposed to changing it to fit Logan Gray. Gray proved last year that his skills are not suited to run that system. He’s not a bad athlete. Just a bad fit for CMR’s offense. I respect Gray’s decision to move on. He should. UGA got spoiled with the patience of Shockley, Tereshinki, and Cox. There’s one big difference with Gray. If Murray is the starter in the fall, Gray will never sniff the starting job. His eligibility expires before Murray. So what’s in it for him? He should find a I-AA system that fits his skills (i.e. Valdosta State or Montana (seriously)).

As for UGA’s backup situation, let’s give Mason a chance to get some back up reps. If anything happens to Murray, Mason probably would be awful (as the Texas QB was in the 1st half until the game slowed down for him and the coaches adjusted the game plan for what he could do instead of what McCoy could do). If Mason had to start, then the game plan would be simplified for him and become much more conservative – you know, the good old Vince Dooley play book. That’s when the punting game becomes a real weapon (don’t laugh, Bill Parcells won a Super Bowl with that offense).

With Gray gone, I can’t imagine UGA won’t get LeMay and another 2 or 3 star QB next signing day. LeMay will redshirt in 2011, Mason will be an experienced backup in 2011, and the 2 or 3 star true freshman QB will fill out the depth chart. Then, if Lemay is as good as advertised, UGA is set for the future: Murray (2010-12 (when he leaves after his junior year a la Stafford)) then Lemay (2013-15 (when he leaves after his junior year)).

See nothing to get all worked up about. CMR actually has a good plan. Didn’t Charlie Ward (Heisman winner – 1993) follow Casey Weldon (Heisman runner-up – 1991)? UGA is FSU north (in too many ways!).

This kid needs to come to Georgia State. We already got a TE from Auburn, two OLs from Tech (Yandell and Gilbert) and Gray would be icing on the cake. He could play immediately and spend the last two years of his career etching his name in the record books as the first starting QB in GSU history. His foot-speed alone would be perfect for the Dome.
