Five former Georgia players were selected in the NFL draft the past two days, including the top three defensive tackles on last season’s team.
The tackle trio was picked on Saturday: Geno Atkins in the fourth round by Cincinnati and Jeff Owens and Kade Weston in the seventh round by Philadelphia and New England, respectively.
They joined former teammates Rennie Curran, the linebacker chosen by Tennessee late in the third round Friday night, and Reshad Jones, the safety selected by Miami in the fifth round Saturday, as Georgia’s draft class.
The Bulldogs wound up with the 97th (Curran), 120th (Atkins), 163rd (Jones), 243rd (Owens) and 248th (Weston) picks of the draft. Jones was selected a bit lower than expected and Owens much lower than some projections.
Entering the seven-round draft, there was no consensus on who would be the first player picked from Georgia. That turned out to be Curran, who was watching the draft with family and friends at his Snellville home when he got a phone call from Titans coach Jeff Fisher late Friday night.
“That was the best call of my life, the best sound,” Curran said. “Just picking up the phone call, my heart skipped a beat.”
Curran bypassed his senior season at UGA to enter the draft, and after hearing questions about his height (5-10 ½) for months, he considered his decision validated by the Titans choosing him in Round 3.
“They have a very aggressive defense, and I feel like I am going to fit perfectly with their defensive scheme,” Curran said on a conference call. “I’m just glad a team took a chance on me, and they will not regret [it]. I am looking to make an impact.”
After Curran, the next selection from Georgia was Atkins, who said he went in the round he expected (fourth). He did not expect, however, to be selected by the Bengals.
“They didn’t work me out or anything,” Atkins said. “It was kind of a surprise, really.”
Jones, on the other hand, was less surprised by the team that picked him (Miami) than by the round (fifth). The Atlanta native, who left school early for the draft, had expected to go in the second or third round.
In need of immediate help at safety, the Dolphins brought Jones to Miami for a workout and interview last month. When he was still available late in the fifth round, they traded sixth- and seventh-round picks to Washington in order to grab him.
“It’s been kind of crazy over the last couple of days,” Jones said on the Dolphins’ website. “But I think it worked out for the best.”
For Owens, the draft was agonizing. Analysts had fluctuated wildly in their projections, forecasting him to go anywhere from the second round to the seventh. By early Saturday afternoon, Owens posted on Twitter: “Now in the fifth round still waiting on a phone call. Going into camp with a chip on my shoulder.”
Several hours later, he was selected 12 spots from the end of the draft by Philadelphia.
“I finally found my home,” Owens then tweeted. “Motown Philly here I come!!!!”
Five picks later, New England’s selection of Weston completed Georgia’s draft delegation.
“Congratulations to everyone that was drafted,” Atkins typed on Twitter. “We did it. We’re in the NFL!!!”
Postscript: Former Georgia wide receiver Mike Moore announced on Twitter Saturday night that he will sign with the Detroit Lions as an undrafted free agent. Two other undrafted players from Georgia also agreed to sign with NFL teams as free agents: safety Bryan Evans with Cincinnati and cornerback Prince Miller with Baltimore.

Now that we’re officially in the off-season, wouldn’t this be the perfect time to take an in-depth look at UGA and have a free-ranging discussion about the problems at UGA and why the arrest rate of players is the highest in the country? it’s common knowledge that UGA is a party school, but have any football players every actually graduated with a real degree? Jan Kemp exposed the school and the coaches almost three decades ago, but there is no sign that anything has improved; if anything, the arrest rate shows that things are getting more outrageous every year while Mark Richt – a decent fellow with no coaching skills – has no clue what to do.
UGA has become a major embarrassment to all Georgians, and we want some answers starting now.

Delores,
Some Tennessee fans are going to be upset with your downgrading of their achievements in the area of arrests. Why do you think they claim “We’re Number 1?” And yes, Georgia does graduate athletes with worthwhile degrees. Check your facts before you indict a very good program.

Delores, (if that’s your real name) the Athens police department nor the UGA campus police show absolutely no favoritism to their local football team. That’s not the case in most other football towns. You should be happy. At least our guys get busted for drinking and not stealing dead girls’ credit cards or robbing people at convenience stores. My goodness Delores! These college kids are actually drinking! I can’t believe it. LOL!

I guess teams were concerned about guys who played under Willie. At least Atkins got drafted. Vance Walker was a 7th round guy last year, and after spending time on the practice squad, he was playing significant time as a backup at the end of the year after injuries hit the Falcons DL.

The Falcons should have grabbed Owens rather than the guy from Kentucky. He was a projected early round before his injury in 2009. Came back to play for Willie’s defenseless. How about his performance in the NFL weight room? Of course, UGA has had other players drafted late that went on to greatness! Philly and New England are very familiar with the quality of contributions they have gotten from UGA players. Falcons could certainly increase their fan base with more UGA players. How many people attend UGA games and what is the sellout rate over the past 20 years compared to the Falcons??

Did you guys hear that statement that Todd McShay made on ESPN when the Tennessee QB was taken. It was a slam against Georgia’s defense. He stated that Crompton was a joke until he played against the dawgs. Georgia’s defense gave him the confidence to go on and do better. He then added the coup-de-craw. He went on to say that a lot of QBs got well after playing against the Georgia defense.
If that ain’t enough to light a fire under the dawgs defense then nothing is.

OK, let’s make a couple of assumption here:
(1) That Delores is likely not really named Delores.
(2) Delores is a Tech Fan. I doubt he/she actually graduated.
So this is designed just to stir the pot.
The way the NCAA measures academic effort and progress is a program called APR. It is an acronym that stands for Academic Progress Rate.
07/08 was the last year reported on the NCAA Website.
Tech Football – 957
Tech Basketball – 914
Tech Baseball – 989
Georgia Football – 976
Georgia Basketball – 945
Georgia Baseball – 932
UShttp://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/2008-11-18-majors-cover_N.htmA Today Article for your review:
At Georgia you are required to go to class. You are checked up on and face a mandatory suspension if you miss class. (Little different than 25 years ago, don’t you think).
Back in November when Tech’s Football Team was in the Top 10, a report came out that Tech tied Texas for the worst graduation rate from 99 – 2002. They came in at 49% compared to UGA at 58%.
With this said, 10 year old data means nothing. In fact, I believe that UGA will show steady improvement since CMR has been there and will show the same in all sports, especially basketball, when the last 5 years have been reviewed.
Can UGA improve Academics within the Athletic Department? Absolutely! But is it embarrassing? Well if so, then Tech must be considered an even larger embarrassment.
Arrest – now, if you look at this, almost all of it is underage drinking. Unlike Tech, UGA is a large campus in a small to medium size town. Cut out the drinking related charges and what are you really down to? Little or nothing. Much tougher to get caught around Tech. Let’s face it; very little going on ‘on campus’ or across the street. You have to travel and then get caught driving back in. And it is pretty clear that either CMR or someone above him have decided that this must be dealt with as well.
Last thought: Nothing against the Tech kids. They seem to be becoming fine adults. But guess what; so are the kids at UGA. Attacking the kids character is simply a classless thing to do.

Amazing – I’m not a Georgia homer, but I try to be fair and balanced. If AJ Green isn’t in the top 5, it will be due to injury, or the NFL not having a draft due to a lockout or such. He should be the highest rated WR. Jon Dwyer has a chance with the Steelers. I imagine they will be ready to trade for a backup RB, since they only have 3, with Dwyer included. 10 to 1 ratio in yards gained between #1 and #2. I hope somebody influential is in Dwyer’s ear this summer.
Dawg1 – Good analysis. Tech needs to stop with the one-and-done roundballers. That brings the graduation rate average down, and makes the Institute look like a tool of the NBA.

After today’s 5, Georgia #1 in SEC in getting players to the NFL.
Miami is #1 with 68 players to the NFL in the last decade.
But Georgia overtook Florida state this year into sole possession of the #2 spot at 62 players in the NFL in the last decade. And maintained #1 in the SEC.
Florida State was #3 with 60.
P.S Alabama and Florida both FINALLY broke 40 in the NFL, so hats off to both of them, 50% short of Georgia’s 62, but they’re gaining on us, might catch us in 20 years.

COACHING!!!!!!!! Florida and Georgia recruiting classes are usually very close every year, but the Gators coach their player much better, just check this year’s NFL draft.
The Gators had 7 players out of the 1st 75 picks, before the 1st Georgia player at 95, the Gators also led the nation with 9 picks over all and they were ahead of all but two bulldogs.
When are you going to realize Richt is not that good of a coach—nice guy, bad coach?

Belichick likes what Meyer is sending him. Belichick had time to sit down for a lengthy meeting with both Cunningham and Spikes after UF’s Pro Day in March.
“They’re extremely well coached by Urban Meyer and his staff, so it’s really a lot of fun to sit down and talk football with them,’’ Belichick said. “They play against other top players in the draft. So it’s a lot of fun to watch film with them and watch them play against other players who are either in the draft this year or were in the draft last year or will be in the draft next year if they were underclassmen. It was a productive two days (in Gainesville).”

I think this was a low draft for the Dawgs especially in comparison to last year, when Stafford and Knowshon went in the 1 round. Here is my take on all the guys:
Rennie Curran: Good kid with a good motor, but too small and isn’t a great form tackler. He’s a Keith Brooking type who gets a lot of tackles upfield but isn’t a game changer. I think the Titans reached a bit with him, especially as a 3rd round pick.
Geno Atkins: may be the best out of the bunch. He’s a little small, but is very aggressive and could grow. Was a little lazy at times, but I think money will motivate him to play harder.
Rashad Jones: could have benefited from staying one more year. He does have good athletic ability and can make plays on the ball, which is what NFL teams look for in their safety’s. He was also lazy, especially against the run but can hit when he wants to. He could be a role player.
Jeff Owens : This guy could have went higher in the draft if he weren’t so damn lazy on the field. Owens did great in the combine but I guarantee that scouts looked at his game film from this past year and saw him dogging it or getting blocked out of plays. 7th round was WAY too low for him. With that being said, Philly is a good organization and if Chris Clemons can excel there, so can Owens.

GT Dog,
That was a good point. Five players drafted on the defensive side of the ball, none drafted highly but all considered NFL caliber talent and the defense so bad. I read about how Owens and Atkins blew up the combine with 44 and 39 reps and wreaked havoc at the senior bowl practices all week. I was like ‘why did we never generate any pressure with the front four’? Didn’t we rank last in the SEC in turnovers? Why didn’t that talent translate to performance? Coach Willie is the obvious answer I guess.
Reminds me of the year Donnan said he had waited ‘50 years’ to coach a team with this much talent…Seymour and Stroud. What did that end up being? An 8-4 team in the Aloha Bowl?
The trend is???
April 25th, 2010

NFL draftee count
Florida 9
Bama 7
Georgia 5
Soooo. Florida has almost twice as many draftees as Georgia. Mmmmh! Alabama has had Saban only 3 years. Saban hasn’t even had a chance to have a full senior class go through and yet he had 2 more players drafted then Richt did in 9 years at Georgia. Mmmmmh!
So what exactly is this trend telling us about Richt’s recruiting, his ability to develop talent, and most of all his coaching relative to the 2 big boy programs in the SEC? It tells us something. And what it tells us aint good. Especially considering Saban has had only 3 years at Bama.

I am a UGA man to the core. I could care less where or what round or for how much money a kid gets after he either graduates or skips his junior or senior or fith year senior year for the pros.
Once they leave ………they are union workers. I do not support unions if I can help it. I am not an obamaron …………..union, union, unions is the NBA/NFL or pro baseball.
NCAA sports and then who is in the World Series, or who is in the Super Bowl or the NBA playoffs??? I could care less. Most grads of most institutions will agree. Only the dead beats care about the pros.

To the advice giver above…I’ll give you some too..it is good for UGA and other teams for that matter to have multiple guys drafted..it keeps them in the news…the potential recruits look at it…I see your point about Unions, but even you, with your narrow view, would have to know that NFL players all negotiate on their own….is it the money they make that bothers you?

Delores, if you think Georgia is number one in arrests, you are sadly mistaken. Go look at some numbers and come back instead of spewing incorrect statements like they were facts. Your argument lost all weight with the false statements you made.
I would agree with yoru argument that as a Dawg fan I am sick of seeing our players in trouble, but riding a scooter without insurance, playing music too loud, and underage drinking are issues a very decent population of college students could easily get ticketed for doing. If you have ever done any of these things or been around people doing them, consider yourself a very lucky hypocrit, as you could have been on the blotter.

Mike Moore will make the team, he graded out better than most receivers that were invited to the combine. Under utilized at Georgia by Bobo, with a quarterback that couldn’t get him the ball if he handed to him, but caught everything that came his way.
Rashad Jones should’ve stayed another year, would have been maybe one of the top 2 safetys coming out next year….and a difference of approx. 10 to 15 million dollars from 5th round to 1st or 2nd.
As far as the theory that Georgia coaches don’t do a good job of coaching up talent, I believe that sometimes Georgia makes the mistake of going after 4 & 5 stars that talent has been maxed out in high school or played under “system coaches” designed to put up great stats. Georgia should change their recruiting idealogy of taking only the best players only by statistics. Players with speed & raw talent,if added 10lbs with a redshirt year would be a 5 star player, with a year of experience in your system. 5th year seniors with experience and muturity is how you win championships, not premadonnas only there for 2 years and they’re off to the NFL. If picking the best player each year guarentee a championship, Detroit Lions would win every Super Bowl.

I believe the young immature recruits from the state of GA. will start this year staying in state because UGA favors a Pro style offense and have gone to a 3-4 defense which is also preferred in the pro’s. The SEC schools that are already on both have had a recruiting advantage but that should change in 2010. Maybe they will also realize that if one school has too many 4 and 5 star player somebody isn’t going to play and may not see action until their jr. year, when they could have played for 4 years at other schools. It will always be hard to beat out southwest GA. from going to Florida State because it is less than an hour drive to their games and the recriuts have been going to those games since they were young kid’s. Also, Auburn will always have an advantage in the recruits from Columbus because it is so close. That’s why I feel UGA are fools having the GA.,FLA. game in Jacksonville every year. Being 60 mile from Gainesville makes the recruiting advantage a no brainier for FLA. If UGA had won 17 of 20 games FLA, would have changed the site of that game years ago. UGA has to be a 7 to 14 point favorite to have a chance, most years, in that game. When UGA use to dominate the game in Jacksonville there was totally different variables involved.

To all you Gator fans on this blog:
Most of the UGA players that go on to the NFL do very well: Hines Ward, Richard Seymor, Terrell Davis, Jon Stincomb, Charles Grant, ALL have Super Bowl rings! Say what you want about the current condition of our program, but you can’t deny that the Dawg have done well in the NFL.
I’m scanning my brain for Gaytors that have performed well in the NFL last 20 years . Emmit Smith? Jevon Kearse?Lito Sheppard? Jabar Gaffney? Maybe Percy Harvin( who currently has Brett Favre throwing to him). And yeah that’s about it. As for your current crop:
Joe Haden will get exposed, Tim Tebow is a HUGE risk by Denver and will only excel because the AFC West is so weak right now, Pouncey is a good center but Pittsburgh will struggle this season, Brandon Spikes is a SLOW LB but will excel because of the Patriots system. Dunlap is a lazy bum, even Meyer will tell everyone that. I actually think Cunningham and Hernandez have the greatest upside. Hernandez in particular has yet to hit his peak athletically and I look for the Patriots to use him in some creative ways.

Have any players graduated with a degree? Yes…some examples: Jon and Matt Stinchomb were both starting football players on the offensive line, both were microbioligy majors with near or 4.0’s and accepted to medical school. After their nfl careers they both plan to practice medicine. Same with the Keslers (spelling) in basketball, though they didn’t have much of an NBA career.
UGA’s starting QB three years ago was accepted to Harvard. There are too many academic all americans to list here. Just do a tiny bit of research and let go of your jaded image of UGA and you will be surprised.

The Robinson situations really irked me. I think Richt is loyal and forgiving to a fault. Thinking he can help every kid that has problems. Something has clearly happened in the past month or two to change his approach apparently.
