Richt dismisses arrested punter from team

Georgia backup punter Trent Dittmer has been dismissed from the team by coach Mark Richt as a result of his alcohol-related arrest in downtown Athens early Tuesday, UGA said Thursday.

Dittmer, 21, was arrested on a charge of public intoxication.

A senior walk-on from Cartersville, he  has never punted in a game for the Bulldogs.

Dittmer  is the third player to be kicked off the Georgia team this spring after an arrest, following outside linebacker Montez Robinson and quarterback Zach Mettenberger.

“The bottom line is, I want to do what’s best for this football team, and I want to do what’s best for the young men too,” Richt said.  “And sometimes if a young man loses his opportunity to play for your team, a lesson will be learned by him and everyone else who is watching.”

Athens-Clarke County Police spokeswoman Hilda Sorrow said the 2:30 a.m. arrest of Dittmer occurred after an officer heard a loud disturbance near the corner of Clayton and Jackson streets. She said the officer saw several men trying to get another man to leave the area. As the officer approached, the man –- allegedly Dittmer –- broke free from his friends and hit a male in the face with his fist, Sorrow said.

Dittmer was taken to Clarke Couny Jail and was released several hours later on $500 bond.

In Georgia’s recent G-Day intra-squad scrimmage, Dittmer punted three times.

The “arrest” is not the reason for being kicked off the team.
Richt gets the facts…it is the players proven ACTIONS that will warrant discipline.

The fans CANNOT know what discipline is appropriate–
We do not KNOW what discipline, counseling, and other issues went on before being released from the team.

Give it a rest lame brains.

Nor do we know if he was already on double secret probation.

Of course…it wouldn’t be “double secret” then.

Such a shame that a Dawg fan can’t come on here and discuss GEORGIA football with other GEOGIA fans without Techies and Gators relentlessly submitting immature and childlike comments. Do we see Vandy, Kentucky or South Carolina fans on here? Rarely if ever. Tech is basically irrelevant and face it, the Gators have had our number for years so while they have bragging rights, the majority of the stories they comment on doesn’t even concern them. Is it jealousy. Perhaps on Tech’s part. The Gators really have no reason to be here. Go figure.

Kramer–yes…if Georgia is as bad as the Gators say…why waste time on here talking trash?
I mean, we are bottom of the barrel losers…why pick on poor little us?

Gators have no class.
Or Gators are insecure.
Which is it?

Tech is only barely worth mentioning.

Our 21 year old Back up Punter gets arrested for public intoxication. Drinking in College, what a horrible person he must be! You Techies criticize us yet you have students being charged for material support to terrorists. Watch out for falling glass as your throwing those stones, nerds!

Damon Evans and Michael Adams ordered richt to start getting tough with all these drunks and thugs on the team—even the backup punter!

DawgMan: Michael Adams needs to stay out of the AD’s business. Last I checked the Athletic Department was running a $6,000,000/year surplus and Michael Adams keeps borrowing money from them.

I CAN KNOW what discipline is appropriate for a rules violation.
FROM WHAT WE KNOW AT THIS POINT the punishment does not fit the crime.
Perhaps WE WILL LEARN that more serious offenses were committed but it DOES NOT prohibit ANYONE from commenting about it at THIS POINT.

Bill King is a…….. seems you maybe missing the point the kid was drunk and assaulted someone according to witnesses he punched another man in the face..it was NOT just a drinking in public matter , which I would agree normally would have been a game suspension..methinks it was punches thrown that weighted more heavily in this case than drinks downed. Not that is matters if CMR had suspended him you’d be flapping your gums to the “he’s too soft” tune…CMR can’t please you and the other Bugs,Gators and Trolls and thank GOD he is not trying .

Another UGA thug kicked off your joke of a team, while we had 8 players go in the first rd last night. Watch for another 8-10 go in the second and third rds tonight. Unlike you hillbillies, we actually reload year after year. Have fun holding your breath waiting for your next arrest.

He hit the long snapper. That is the most important position on the team and must be protected. All kickers will learn from his mistakes.

I have a feeling that this might not been the young man’s first visit to the coaches office. Even if so, I still believe that walk-ons get one chance and one chance only.

But if I had to guess, I would say that there are additional charges forthcoming for the physical actions, (likely leading to an additional arrest) that are going to hit this summer, and the decision was that nobody was well served in him staying. The other guys don’t need the distraction, especially from a self-invited member of the team. He’s never going to get any PT, he isn’t relying on the scholarship to complete his college degree, he’s a legal adult, and there is no “leeson” served to keep him. ZERO upside to anybody, and I doubt if we knew all the details any fairness issue at stake either.

I sense rededication and cause in Athens. Richt is taking no crap and asserting himself in offensive planning and development. It appears that he is re-building from top to bottom. There is a new attitude in Athens, and I like it.

What a joke of a program UGA has become. How many arrests under Richt now? Geezz…doesn’t matter anyway…Richt has lost his steam. If he was going to win one, he would have won it by now. Get ready for several mediocre years in a row UGA fans.

FlaDawg,
You as a fan will never know what happens between Richt and a player behind closed doors.
When there is an arrest, you do not know if other violations occurred prior to that arrest that were considered in disciplinary action.
That is the point…in most cases fans will not know these things.
Some player actions are so egregious that the media discovers them.
Most of the time, the coaches will keep disciplinary action quiet to avoid embarrassment for the players.
So really, you CAN NOT know enough to judge in this case…at least until Mett or Richt breaks their silence on the subject.
