Who will be first player from UGA taken in this week’s NFL draft?
In last year’s NFL draft, two players from the University of Georgia were chosen in the first dozen picks, Matthew Stafford No. 1 and Knowshon Moreno No. 12. You’ll have to wait a lot longer for a UGA player to be drafted this year.
And when the first player from Georgia’s 2009 team is taken – no sooner than the second round and possibly as late as the fourth, the experts tell us –- who will it be?
Tough question.
I perused a sampling of five mock drafts/prospect boards Monday — all subject to change, of course — and found three different players projected as the first pick from UGA in this year’s draft, which runs Thursday through Saturday:
- Sporting News: Defensive tackle Jeff Owens is projected to be taken with the eighth pick of the second round, No. 40 overall, by San Diego – one spot behind Tim Tebow, by the way.
- ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr.: Another defensive tackle, Geno Atkins, is the first Georgia player in Kiper’s latest mock draft. But the dean of draft analysts doesn’t have Atkins going until the fourth round, No. 113 to San Francisco.
- FoxSports.com: Safety Reshad Jones is the pick as the first Georgia draftee, going to New Orleans with the final pick of the second round, No. 64 overall.
- CBS Sports.com: This site also forecasts Jones as the first UGA player to be drafted, but not until the third round.
- WalterFootball.com: Atkins is first among the Bulldogs in this mock draft, going to Cincinnati in the second round, No. 54 overall.
The former Georgia player whose stock fluctuates the most in the mock drafts is Owens. While projected to go early in the second round by Sporting News’ Russ Lande, Owens is seen as a fifth rounder by CBS Sports.com and projected as a seventh rounder on ESPN’s Todd McShay’s prospects board.
You’ve probably noticed the name missing so far: linebacker Rennie Curran, Georgia’s MVP last season.
Sporting News has Curran going in the third round, No. 83 overall, to . . . the Falcons! Kiper says Curran will go in the range of fourth or fifth round. McShay lists him as a fourth rounder.

Bryan- The point I’m trying to make is Tech’s football program is on the rise and Georgia’s is on the down slope. Even though y’all beat us last year, Tech has won 20 games in two years with Paul Johnson. I know what all these dumb ass redneck UGAY fans are going to say, “Yeah, in the cupcake ACC haha”. It’s a pretty mediocre bunch, but I think it will be Jeff Owens since he impressed scouts during his workouts. I think Kiper is right in that Atkins has the highest upside and will probably be better than Owens in the long run. But I think he’ll be taken after Owens since Owens had a better combine.
BTW Tech fans, Derrick Morgan is SOOOOO overrated! He hasn’t done jack squat against the Dawgs the last 2 years.

Actually, I do fit right in where I am and wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. Especially if I had to hit caps lock just to get my point across.
Now, I will concede this point, that our defense has been in decline, but we have a revamped coaching staff and discipline has obviously become more important to this staff.
I will also concede that CPJ has done some great things for Tech. The triple option offense has been a puzzle for many a defense.
I think both programs are moving in a positive direction that will yield a much more exciting series of games through the next few years.
However, no matter how much reason I through into this, you’re just gonna add another snide comment in all caps… so why do I bother…

Under Richt, UGA has won 8 of 10 bowl games and 2 of 3 BCS games. GT has lost their last 6 bowl games, both under Johnson and have only appeared in 1 BCS game. Tech fans like GT Baby have become unreasonable in the last couple of years. They eked out a 3pt victory 2 yrs ago and ruined the UGA blogs for an entire year. CPJ has given them a glimmer of hope and they think their team has become Florida or Alabama. It is sad really.
Attention all GT Fans: The arrest record argument does not work in this case….no matter how many times you try and use it. Tech is in downtown Atlanta where the police have more crimes than they could ever hope to prevent or solve. In Athens, the police have very little to do but issue parking citations and arrest people for public intoxication. It is easier to spot the outliers, so if someone gets out of line at tech, nobody notices because the police are busy trying to figure out a murder that happened down the street. In Athens, a 300lb, 6-7 inch football player that has had too much to drink and is yelling and screaming down-town is probably pretty easy to pick out.

A student wakes up to a new day!
He looks out his BARRED window to grafitti painted walls with words Andrew Dice Clay wouldnt say!
As he goes to take his shower rusty water washes our little friend clean
He puts on his bullet proof vest for safety
And wheres his Camoflague to try to avoid being seen by the local drug cartel and thugs that patrol the streets of North Ave
He is hungry so he sprints with his assigned armed guard through the campus to grab a healthy bite to eat (EVERY TECH STUDENT HAS A PAID ARMED GUARD WITH THEM ON CAMPUS AS PART OF TUITION FOR SAFETY PURPOSES)
He makes his way to class again with his armed guard as they drop and cover behind walls and trees to avoid being hit by stray bullets flying in the air.
He makes it to class and learns the basics of becoming an outstanding JANITORIAL ENGINEER
Ah the day is almost over as he sprints back to his room to continue his education on cleaning the UGA campus and linker logs left in the toilet after 93,000 true fans exit a real stadium
Now our little friend lies in bed with a radio blasting to drown out the nightly gun fire just outside his window on North Ave
He’s alive and safetly locked in his dorm cell hoping he one day makes it to graduation and gets a job with a local trash company all worth it he says because he dreams of being the best JANITORIAL ENGINEER out there.

Kidding aside, I was not impressed with either Moreno or Stafford when they were at UGA, especially Stafford. They slump when you need them the most, they cannot pick up a team when the team is down. The only reason Stafford was a #1 overall pick is his arm, not brain, not leadership. That tells me NFL draft pickers are not the brightest.

Unfortunately for both sides, GTBaby is not the only person who trashes their rivals, as shown by some of the comments made in response to his comments. If you need other examples, feel free to look at the GT blog and see some of your fellow Bulldogs trashing the Yellow Jackets. First, to everyone who felt the need to bring up cops, robberies, and any other off the field stuff, lets try and keep the talk about events on the field. Second, every conference is filled with good players and excellent coaches. To say the ACC is a pathetic conference is wrong and simply ignorant. Fact- The ACC has had the second most players drafted in the past ten years or so, and the numbers are very close to the SEC. Finally, to answer the question, I would pick Owens as the first player off the board. As a GT fan, he was the player I was scared of the most on the defense. I am not sold on Curran being a solid player at the next level. Example. Mario West was a solid player at GT and a workaholic. But no matter how much he worked, he was just not going to get to the level of a big-time NBA player. He did earn his way onto the Hawks and earned playing time and a full contract. But Mario will never be a starter. I see Curran being a similar type of player in the NFL. He will work hard, play tough, but he will never be more than a backup in the NFL. Anyways, good luck to all of these guys as they try to continue their football careers.

Kevin UGA can also accept the lowest common denominator as recruits which do not meet the standards of the ACC much less the more stringent requirements held by GT. UGA is also seen as the State of Georgia by many of the ignorant, uneducated Georgians and thus have a much, much larger fan base which obviously helps in recruiting. Thus, if UGA was running on all cylinders they would always defeat Tech in every sport and in every draft. Fortunately UGA has never, ever ran on all its advantages! We have four national titles by the recognized polls of the day and UGA only has one! In over 100 years of football!!!! Richt simply keeps the car in 2nd gear! Thanks heavens for elderly drivers!!!

I understand Curran going early, given that he has a family to support, but didn’t Reshad also go early? The NFL scouting report on him doesn’t look too impressive. One would think that spending a year with the new defensive coaches at UGA, who seem to actually COACH the players, would have helped Jones tremendously, especially as far as fundamentals go.

I am not familiar with recruiting standards imposed by the SEC vs. ACC, but at the very least, I suspect you’re probably right regarding GT having a higher academic standard for their players than UGA. Though this point seems feckless. We are not talking about maximizing football potential according to some speculative standard for recruits, i.e. you should be better than us b/c your standards are lower. Whether that’s true, it’s relevant. We are talking about which team is better. And while we may keep it in 2nd gear, its been good enough to beat GT senseless for 8 of the last 9 years.

I agree GTBABY. The cheerleader story is just funny–nothing wrong with it. Though I am not sure that other players from around the country do not break just as many laws, insofar as the law pertains to drinking under age (who cares), having a fake id (who cares) or punching a guy while drunk (not cool, but it happens A LOT). I know you are not a fan of Athens, but it is well documented, and boasted by the Athens police dept., that they are more strict than just about any other college town police force in the country. So, this too plays a role in the arrest rate being a tad higher. At GT, the APD could care a less about a publicly drunk Tech student, whereas that same student in Athens would be in cuffs.
