Who will be first player from UGA taken in this week’s NFL draft?
In last year’s NFL draft, two players from the University of Georgia were chosen in the first dozen picks, Matthew Stafford No. 1 and Knowshon Moreno No. 12. You’ll have to wait a lot longer for a UGA player to be drafted this year.
And when the first player from Georgia’s 2009 team is taken – no sooner than the second round and possibly as late as the fourth, the experts tell us –- who will it be?
Tough question.
I perused a sampling of five mock drafts/prospect boards Monday — all subject to change, of course — and found three different players projected as the first pick from UGA in this year’s draft, which runs Thursday through Saturday:
- Sporting News: Defensive tackle Jeff Owens is projected to be taken with the eighth pick of the second round, No. 40 overall, by San Diego – one spot behind Tim Tebow, by the way.
- ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr.: Another defensive tackle, Geno Atkins, is the first Georgia player in Kiper’s latest mock draft. But the dean of draft analysts doesn’t have Atkins going until the fourth round, No. 113 to San Francisco.
- FoxSports.com: Safety Reshad Jones is the pick as the first Georgia draftee, going to New Orleans with the final pick of the second round, No. 64 overall.
- CBS Sports.com: This site also forecasts Jones as the first UGA player to be drafted, but not until the third round.
- WalterFootball.com: Atkins is first among the Bulldogs in this mock draft, going to Cincinnati in the second round, No. 54 overall.
The former Georgia player whose stock fluctuates the most in the mock drafts is Owens. While projected to go early in the second round by Sporting News’ Russ Lande, Owens is seen as a fifth rounder by CBS Sports.com and projected as a seventh rounder on ESPN’s Todd McShay’s prospects board.
You’ve probably noticed the name missing so far: linebacker Rennie Curran, Georgia’s MVP last season.
Sporting News has Curran going in the third round, No. 83 overall, to . . . the Falcons! Kiper says Curran will go in the range of fourth or fifth round. McShay lists him as a fourth rounder.

Kidding aside, I was not impressed with either Moreno or Stafford when they were at UGA, especially Stafford. They slump when you need them the most, they cannot pick up a team when the team is down. The only reason Stafford was a #1 overall pick is his arm, not brain, not leadership. That tells me NFL draft pickers are not the brightest.

Stafford never played behind a good offensive line. If we didn’t have Stafford and Moreno, we only would have won 6 or 7 games. I am biased, but i believe those guys were really good.

GT BABY is an idiot. I think that he is in the minority as far as Tech fans go, in that most of us don’t go and post idiotic comments on a rivals blog. If we were able to see who he is, I’m sure that we would find out that he is either an underachieved middle school student or a person that wasn’t able to get into any colleges at all (except for Gwinnett Tech maybe). Unfortunately for both sides, GTBaby is not the only person who trashes their rivals, as shown by some of the comments made in response to his comments. If you need other examples, feel free to look at the GT blog and see some of your fellow Bulldogs trashing the Yellow Jackets. First, to everyone who felt the need to bring up cops, robberies, and any other off the field stuff, lets try and keep the talk about events on the field. Second, every conference is filled with good players and excellent coaches. To say the ACC is a pathetic conference is wrong and simply ignorant. Fact- The ACC has had the second most players drafted in the past ten years or so, and the numbers are very close to the SEC. Finally, to answer the question, I would pick Owens as the first player off the board. As a GT fan, he was the player I was scared of the most on the defense. I am not sold on Curran being a solid player at the next level. Example. Mario West was a solid player at GT and a workaholic. But no matter how much he worked, he was just not going to get to the level of a big-time NBA player. He did earn his way onto the Hawks and earned playing time and a full contract. But Mario will never be a starter. I see Curran being a similar type of player in the NFL. He will work hard, play tough, but he will never be more than a backup in the NFL. Anyways, good luck to all of these guys as they try to continue their football careers.
