Who will be first player from UGA taken in this week’s NFL draft?

In last year’s NFL draft, two players from the University of Georgia were chosen in the first dozen picks, Matthew Stafford No. 1 and Knowshon Moreno No. 12.  You’ll have to wait a lot longer for a UGA player to be drafted this year.

And when the first player from Georgia’s 2009 team is taken –  no sooner than the second round and possibly as late as the fourth, the experts tell us –- who will it be?

Tough question.

I perused a sampling of five mock drafts/prospect boards Monday — all subject to change,  of course — and found three different players projected as the first pick from UGA in this year’s draft, which runs Thursday through Saturday:

  • Sporting News: Defensive tackle Jeff Owens is projected to be taken with the eighth pick of the second round, No. 40 overall, by San Diego – one spot behind Tim Tebow, by the way.
  • ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr.: Another defensive tackle, Geno Atkins, is the first Georgia player in Kiper’s latest mock draft. But the dean of draft analysts doesn’t have Atkins going until the fourth round, No. 113 to San Francisco.
  • FoxSports.com: Safety Reshad Jones is the pick as the first Georgia draftee,  going to New Orleans with the final pick of the second round, No. 64 overall.
  • CBS Sports.com: This site also forecasts Jones as the first UGA player to be drafted, but not until the third round.
  • WalterFootball.com: Atkins is first among the Bulldogs in this mock draft,  going to Cincinnati in the second round, No. 54 overall.

The former Georgia player whose stock fluctuates the most in the mock drafts is Owens. While projected to go early in the second round by Sporting News’ Russ Lande, Owens is seen as a fifth rounder by CBS Sports.com and projected as a seventh rounder on ESPN’s Todd McShay’s prospects board.

You’ve probably noticed the name missing so far: linebacker Rennie Curran, Georgia’s MVP last season.

Sporting News has Curran going in the third round, No. 83 overall, to . . . the Falcons! Kiper says Curran will go in the range of fourth or fifth round. McShay lists him as a fourth rounder.

So who do you think will be the first Dog drafted?

As long as we get a guy drafted before Tebow, “the greatest player of all-time”, Georgia fans will have something worth celebrating.

Probably going to be one of those big D-Lineman, probably Atkins, he had a big NFL day at the combines and impressed a lot of folks.

Personally, I’d like to see Joe Cox get drafted, he’s a lot better than Tebow NFL wise, but won’t happen due to Georgia’s record last year.

Really go back and win an outright championship instead of winning one together with two or more teams curtosy of a ( UPI ) and other previous non-existant polls

Hey you want to knock equestrian, then knock, tennis, golf, gymnastics, baseball, swimming.

What has Tech done compared to UGA athletics.

I know, beatdowns by UGA

and has consistently ranked highest in the nation among crime figures right there at your dumpy campus

If Rennie doesn’t get picked up in the 1st 2 rounds, he should have waited. If that happens, coming out early cost him tens of millions.

But, since he led the SEC in tackles, he’ll probaby get picked up in the 2nd round.

GT Baby – Here’s a few reminders for you: 1) the 45-42 game that you guys consider your “resurgence” against UGA, you barely won…mainly the result of a fumbled kickoff. 2) yes you will have some high draft selections. But you will also be losing your 2 best players on D and arguably your 2 best players on O…so by all means keep talking smack…while you can. 3) don’t give opponents more than a week to prepare for you “vaunted” offense. 4) watch your mouth…it can make you look ignorant.

Actually, I do fit right in where I am and wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. Especially if I had to hit caps lock just to get my point across.

Now, I will concede this point, that our defense has been in decline, but we have a revamped coaching staff and discipline has obviously become more important to this staff.

I will also concede that CPJ has done some great things for Tech. The triple option offense has been a puzzle for many a defense.

I think both programs are moving in a positive direction that will yield a much more exciting series of games through the next few years.

However, no matter how much reason I through into this, you’re just gonna add another snide comment in all caps… so why do I bother…

I mean really, I just wanna talk some sensible football!!!

Well they ought to be a preseason top 10 in football just like FSU was in the 90’s.

The ACC is loaded with top tier schools, like UNC, NC state, DUKE, Virginia Tech, Virginia, FSU, Boston College,

Seriously who do you guys play all year. Oh yea 1 team UGA

What will be the result a loss because you will finally play real competition

FSU was lucky and never played a UGA caliber team.

Yes they did Miami and what always happened (LOST). When they finally beat Miami thinks to probation they would win something.

The problem with Tech is they aren’t going to beat Miami, FSU, or UGA this year so enjoy your top 10 ranking for 4 more months

UGA’s football program has crumbled. Do I think Tech is a great team, no. Do I think Tech is a good team, yes. The thing that bothers me the most about Georgia fans is they think their team is soooo good, their gonna do soooo many things and then they lose one game and they give up. Georgia fans ( and Im not saying all of them) are such a joke and are bad for the sport. Half of Georgia’s fans are girls that have no idea whats going on. At least the nerds at GT know their stuff.

Really

UGA really thinks their sooo sooo good. Your ranked in the pre-season top 10, you beat a no-body in the orange bowl and you win a conference title game who’s team’s both lost to middle of the road SEC teams the week before and NOW YOU GUYS THINK YOUR GOING TO PLAY IN THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME THIS YEAR

Gimmie a break

GT knows there stuff

Obviously they don’t because whenever GT beats UGA you would have thought Tech just won the National Championship the way your fans act

You say Tech knows their stuff, Again I really don’t think they do since they never seem to find Bubba Dump Stadium to fill it during games

Thats whats bad for a sport, a fan base that cannot even fill a high school size stadium in a metropolitan area of 5.6 million people

Thats whats bad for the sport of football. Appalacian State has more fans that show for a game than Tech does. I think its time for Tech to step down from Division-I and join the Ga-Southerns and Valdosta States of football.

GTBABY,

Under Richt, UGA has won 8 of 10 bowl games and 2 of 3 BCS games. GT has lost their last 6 bowl games, both under Johnson and have only appeared in 1 BCS game. BTW, you lost to Louisiana St. 38-3 in 2008 and in the very respectable (sarcasm noted) Emerald bowl, you got your arses handed to you 38-10. Not to mention LSU’s beating in 2009 under Johnson. Wow, you’re rising alright!

I am trying to make sense of this…from what I gather GTBaby has run across a dumb UGA fan and is acting really, really dumb to show us just how dumb the UGA fan was that he met. I for one have no idea what his point is.

Tech fans like GT Baby have become unreasonable in the last couple of years. They eked out a 3pt victory 2 yrs ago and ruined the UGA blogs for an entire year. CPJ has given them a glimmer of hope and they think their team has become Florida or Alabama. It is sad really.

Attention all GT Fans: The arrest record argument does not work in this case….no matter how many times you try and use it. Tech is in downtown Atlanta where the police have more crimes than they could ever hope to prevent or solve. In Athens, the police have very little to do but issue parking citations and arrest people for public intoxication. It is easier to spot the outliers, so if someone gets out of line at tech, nobody notices because the police are busy trying to figure out a murder that happened down the street. In Athens, a 300lb, 6-7 inch football player that has had too much to drink and is yelling and screaming down-town is probably pretty easy to pick out.

( A day in the life of a GT Student )

A student wakes up to a new day!

He looks out his BARRED window to grafitti painted walls with words Andrew Dice Clay wouldnt say!

As he goes to take his shower rusty water washes our little friend clean

He puts on his bullet proof vest for safety

And wheres his Camoflague to try to avoid being seen by the local drug cartel and thugs that patrol the streets of North Ave

He is hungry so he sprints with his assigned armed guard through the campus to grab a healthy bite to eat (EVERY TECH STUDENT HAS A PAID ARMED GUARD WITH THEM ON CAMPUS AS PART OF TUITION FOR SAFETY PURPOSES)

He makes his way to class again with his armed guard as they drop and cover behind walls and trees to avoid being hit by stray bullets flying in the air.

He makes it to class and learns the basics of becoming an outstanding JANITORIAL ENGINEER

Ah the day is almost over as he sprints back to his room to continue his education on cleaning the UGA campus and linker logs left in the toilet after 93,000 true fans exit a real stadium

Now our little friend lies in bed with a radio blasting to drown out the nightly gun fire just outside his window on North Ave

He’s alive and safetly locked in his dorm cell hoping he one day makes it to graduation and gets a job with a local trash company all worth it he says because he dreams of being the best JANITORIAL ENGINEER out there.
