Who will be first player from UGA taken in this week’s NFL draft?

In last year’s NFL draft, two players from the University of Georgia were chosen in the first dozen picks, Matthew Stafford No. 1 and Knowshon Moreno No. 12.  You’ll have to wait a lot longer for a UGA player to be drafted this year.

And when the first player from Georgia’s 2009 team is taken –  no sooner than the second round and possibly as late as the fourth, the experts tell us –- who will it be?

Tough question.

I perused a sampling of five mock drafts/prospect boards Monday — all subject to change,  of course — and found three different players projected as the first pick from UGA in this year’s draft, which runs Thursday through Saturday:

  • Sporting News: Defensive tackle Jeff Owens is projected to be taken with the eighth pick of the second round, No. 40 overall, by San Diego – one spot behind Tim Tebow, by the way.
  • ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr.: Another defensive tackle, Geno Atkins, is the first Georgia player in Kiper’s latest mock draft. But the dean of draft analysts doesn’t have Atkins going until the fourth round, No. 113 to San Francisco.
  • FoxSports.com: Safety Reshad Jones is the pick as the first Georgia draftee,  going to New Orleans with the final pick of the second round, No. 64 overall.
  • CBS Sports.com: This site also forecasts Jones as the first UGA player to be drafted, but not until the third round.
  • WalterFootball.com: Atkins is first among the Bulldogs in this mock draft,  going to Cincinnati in the second round, No. 54 overall.

The former Georgia player whose stock fluctuates the most in the mock drafts is Owens. While projected to go early in the second round by Sporting News’ Russ Lande, Owens is seen as a fifth rounder by CBS Sports.com and projected as a seventh rounder on ESPN’s Todd McShay’s prospects board.

You’ve probably noticed the name missing so far: linebacker Rennie Curran, Georgia’s MVP last season.

Sporting News has Curran going in the third round, No. 83 overall, to . . . the Falcons! Kiper says Curran will go in the range of fourth or fifth round. McShay lists him as a fourth rounder.

So who do you think will be the first Dog drafted?

If Geno had a little bit more maturity I would say him, but I think Owens will go first. I still think there is more upside to Geno, just more risk also

GT BABY,

Congratulations on learning to work the caps lock key. By the way, UGA had produced the 4th most NFL players in the last 11 years. Tech is not even on the honorable mention list.

To the GT fans..at first I made fun of all the N. Ave robberies. But seriously, this is getting out of hand. You guys need to install video cameras around campus or something. I am all for the rivalry and making fun of one another, but the campus seriously borders on unsafe now and that’s no good for anyone.

GT, what does that say about your program. You supposedly have three first round picks on your squad and consistently get beat up by your daddy in Athens. First round picks dont guarantee a high school offense working against the big DAWGS!!!!!!!!!

Yes, GT BABY, Tech has four potential first rounders. Congrats. You still lost to Georgia. (and, yes, I understand that UGA suffered a similar thing last year).

But seriously, dude…you guys have won like, what? 4 games against UGA since 1991? I don’t go talking s#!t on the Florida blog. Just sayin.

GT Baby – You are truly an embarrassment to your school and the good fans out there of Tech. For you to get that worked up and use profanity in your posts and then focus on the ONE win yo have over UGA in the past 9 years is truly laughable when you think about it…oh wait..reviewing your posts, thinking is obviously out of your realm of possibility.

yeah, its sad GT, you’re right, it’s sad when when an average UGA team puts a BEAT DOWN at your shanty of a stadium and then Tech ends up winning the ACC. Pathetic. Keep your ACC Championship, We don’t want it. It’s just the ACC, aka “B-Team”. But go ahead and cuss some more DB. and yes Rennie would be a steal at 4th round.

GT BABY

Bryan- The point I’m trying to make is Tech’s football program is on the rise and Georgia’s is on the down slope. Even though y’all beat us last year, Tech has won 20 games in two years with Paul Johnson. I know what all these dumb ass redneck UGAY fans are going to say, “Yeah, in the cupcake ACC haha”. Actually, Georgia Techs schedule is harder than Georgia’s this year. If anything is cupcake this year, it’s Georgia’s schedule this year. Any real UGA fan knows that too!

GT BABY: If UGA is so bad, why does this blog attract unemployed people like you? Why not go to your school and get mugged? Perhaps if more people attended your games, their would not be so many muggings. Perhaps if you actually had pretty girls at Tech, the guys could focus on them instead of pocket protectors and blogging on other blogs.

It’s a pretty mediocre bunch, but I think it will be Jeff Owens since he impressed scouts during his workouts. I think Kiper is right in that Atkins has the highest upside and will probably be better than Owens in the long run. But I think he’ll be taken after Owens since Owens had a better combine.

BTW Tech fans, Derrick Morgan is SOOOOO overrated! He hasn’t done jack squat against the Dawgs the last 2 years.

GT Baby,

You Tech fans are so delusional. Tech having a tougher schedule than UGA? Is that supposed to be a joke? There is no such thing as an easy schedule in the SEC, EVER! That’s why the Dawgs were able to beat you guys last year, they were battle tested by the time they played ya’ll: well that and Paul Johnson’s atrocious game plan which involved Nesbitt and Shaw throwing the ball WAY more than they should have( what was that about?). The ACC is a weak conference in football just like the SEC is weak in basketball. I can admit that the SEC sucks at basketball, so why can’t you ACC diehards admit that your conference is inferior in football?
