UGA’s Pope headed to Wake Forest as assistant coach (and other notes)

  • Mark Pope left medical school for an entry-level position on Georgia’s basketball staff in hopes it would lead to a coaching job.  And it has.

Pope, the former Kentucky and NBA player who joined the UGA staff in a non-coaching capacity last year, is expected to become an assistant coach at Wake Forest any day now.

There were whispers at the UGA Tipoff Club’s end-of-season banquet Thursday night that Pope had accepted an assistant’s job at Wake Forest, and the Winston-Salem Journal reports the announcement will come next week “after he completes Wake Forest’s hiring process.”

Pope was not in attendance at the Georgia banquet.

“Mark has done a phenomenal job for us,” Georgia coach Mark Fox told the audience.

Pope was in his third year of medical school at Columbia when he persuaded Fox to hire him last year as operations coordinator, a $35,000-a-year staff position. That job, as detailed by colleague Steve Hummer in this excellent article on Pope earlier this year, is to handle “the smallest details for the Bulldogs, anything from socks to jocks to keeping the student managers on task.”

Pope, 37, played on Kentucky’s 1996 NCAA championship team and six seasons in the NBA.  He played for Jeff Bzdelik, the new Wake Forest coach, when Bzdelik was head coach of the Denver Nuggets.

  • With both Trey Thompkins and Travis Leslie returning, expectations will be ratcheted up for UGA basketball next season.

“I’m excited about next year’s team,” said Fox, who added: “But I think I’ll temper my excitement until we can get all the pieces we want to add.”

Fox has two scholarships still available –- and would be willing to use both this spring. “For the right two guys, we would,” he said.

Fox, of course, can’t comment on specific recruits. But Georgia, as you know, is prominently in the mix for Los Angeles’ Dwayne Polee and Westlake’s Marcus Thornton.

  • Starting his second year as Georgia coach, Fox told the 200-plus at the Tipoff Club banquet:  “There’s not been one day that I have opened my eyes and had second thoughts about where I came.”
  • UGA hired a new head coach for its women’s soccer program Friday: Steve Holeman, who held the same job at Ole Miss for the past 16 seasons. His career record: 165-124-31. More details here.

Coach Fox has quickly brought respectability to the UGA basketball program and I am excited for what the future holds. He is an excellent leader and teacher. More and more quality players will be drawn to UGA as a result. Things are looking up for sure.

If UGA in 2010-11 wins 19 regular season games and then goes say, 2 wins in the SEC tourney or deeper, then an invite to the Dance will follow. UGA is going to need about two more years of really decent recruiting and continued evidence of elevating the BB program by Coach Fox and we will be set. He is really working hard on this and so far ……….great job !!!

If by 2013, we are a solid, gamer SEC program with a couple of NCAAs under our belt by then, we will need to pony up some major bread $$ for Coach Fox or he will leave.

First things first …………let us enjoy this past season, knowing that 2010-11 might be more exciting than in 12+ years.

A pretty good assessment really, right on the money. I personally don’t know a single UGA alumnus who’s seen a game in Athens in years. They just got tired of all the public drunkenness, trashiness, and feeling they were supposed to be cheering for those illiterate goons playing for them.

A sheep’s skin, wherever it’s from, for what it’s worth, is only good enough to get you consideration for a job interview. It can be obtained through hard work or it can be obtained by cheating. It’s the person inside the human skin and his/her knowledge, wisdom and, last but not least…the personality of the individual that makes him an ultimate success.

Good judgment comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgment.

UNDER Richt

.
“Record at home: 46-10″

WHICH of the 11 HOME LOSSES in the Coach Richt Era of 9 years, DOES NOT COUNT ?

.

.

56-19 Florida last 9 years (Coach Richt Era) vs SEC foes 2 N.C.

53-23 LSU last 9 years (Coach Richt Era) vs SEC foes 2 N.C.

52-23 UGA last 9 years (Coach Richt Era) vs SEC foes 0 N.C.

Tell me again how Coach Richt 2-7 vs. Florida is BETTER than Florida who has 2 N.C. while Coach Richt does NOT have MORE WINS or FEWER LOSSES than Florida ?

Tell me again how Coach Richt is BETTER than LSU who has 2 N.C. while Coach Richt has FEWER WINS and does not have FEWER LOSSES than LSU, either ?

.

.
.91-27 LSU last 9 years all games total wins overall 2 NC

90-27 Florida last 9 years all games total wins overall 2 NC

90-27 UGA last 9 years all games total wins overall 0 NC

.

.

26 Home Wins LSU last 9 years vs SEC foes

24 Home Wins Florida last 9 years vs SEC foes

24 Home Wins Auburn last 9 years vs SEC foes

23 Home Wins Tennessee last 9 years vs SEC foes

22 Home Wins Alabama last 9 years vs SEC foes

22 Home Wins UGA last 9 years vs SEC foes.

But, you come running in here telling us that Coach Richt has the best home record in The SEC in the Coach Richt Era.

B.S.
.

.

9-3 Florida Neutral site games last 9 years vs SEC foes

3-1 LSU Neutral site games last 9 years vs SEC foes

1-0 Auburn Neutral site games last 9 years vs SEC foes

1-1 Alabama Neutral site games last 9 years vs SEC foes

4-8 UGA Neutral site games last 9 years vs SEC foes

.

.
“Record on the road: 42-6 (including bowl games)”

YOU SAY 42-6 on the road, and 46-10 at home.

Add it up nimrod. 88-16 according to you is what Coach Richt is, yet we all know he is 90-27, averaging 10 wins in 14-game seasons nowadays.

+90-27
-88-16
2-9

Where is the 2-9 ?

We all know he is 4-8 on neutral site games, 2-7 vs Florida and 2-1 SEC CG.

YOU SIT THERE AND MAKE THIS CRAP UP.

When I correct you each time, you MAKE UP MORE LIES.

And, change your handle embarrassed as patrick.

.
“Losses to unranked teams: 6″

ANOTHER LIE.

Coach Richt has LOST TO 8 TEAMS not ranked in the Top 25 Final AP Poll the year he LOST.

.

.

Coach Richt Era compared to. Final AP Poll Top 25 teams :

1-LOST 2009 to Oklahoma State, UNRANKED Final AP Poll Top 25.

2-LOST 2009 to vols UNRANKED 7-6 team otherwise not winning record.

3-LOST 2009 to Kentucky UNRANKED 7-6 team otherwise not winning record.

4-LOST 2007 to South Carolina UNRANKED 6-6 not even in bowl game.

5-LOST 2006 to Vandie UNRANKED a 4-8 team for God’s sake. B.S.

6-LOST 2006 to Kentucky UNRANKED Vandie and KY not good teams.

7-LOST 2002 to Florida UNRANKED and still LOST. David Greene.

8-LOST 2001 to Auburn UNRANKED 7-5 team. David Greene.

Which TWO (2) of these 8 LOSSES to teams NOT RANKED in the Top 25 of the Final AP Poll the year Coach Richt LOST to them, DO NOT COUNT ?

.
.
“Fact……….UGA has 2 SEC titles..same as Fla in last 9 years and equal amount of total wins (90) over all.”

We are 2-7 vs. Florida in the Coach Richt Era with 0 N.C. while Florida has 2 of the last 4 N.C. Coach Richt does NOT have MORE WINS or FEWER LOSSES overall than Florida, and LSU has MORE WINS than Coach Richt who also does NOT HAVE fewer losses than LSU either.
.
“Fact…….UGA is clearly as good or better than any SEC team over last 9 years.”

B.S.

LSU has been better.

Florida has been better.

And, now Alabama has passed us by too.
.
“No Probations”

Curious comment when only Alabama is ON PROBATION in Football as we speak in The SEC, especially given the 92 arrests / suspensions in the Coach Richt Era.

The biggest problem with Coach Richt is his COACHING STAFF, all of them, not just the Defensive Coaching Staff he just fired all of, not just the Special Teams’ Coaching Staff he just fired all of, but MOSTLY the Offensive Coaching Staff whom Coach Richt has now announced in public he is taking over ALL THE RESPONSIBILITIES of the Offensive Coaching Staff.

We are in decline having not even been to The SEC Championship Game since 2005.

The SEC is better than us.

Glaringly.

And, outside The SEC there are another 10 teams doing FAR BETTER than Coach Richt too.

# 96 NCAA Rank Penalties average every year of the last 4 years

14 Interceptions average every year of the last 4 years

21 Fumbles average every year of the last 4 years

Don’t even compare Jim Donnan’s last 4 years to Coach Richt’s last 4 years here because you know full well what it will show.

As for Quincy Carter, yes he did drugs and was the source of bad press for The University of Georgia on the field and off the field.

There have been 92 UGA players arrested / suspended in the Coach Richt Era and continue to be the source of bad press for The University of Georgia on the field and off the field including 2 arrested during Spring Practices, one for beating up a girl repeatedly.

You give a pass to Coach Richt for ALL this. Yeah, jesse james, don’t even compare the last 4 years of Jim Donnan with the last 4 years for Coach Richt here. Yeah, right.

Bulldawg- Just wondering why Jim Donnan is not still the head coach and you can down Coach Richt all you want, but he is what UGA needed when he came in. Now if with this new Defensive regime, only time will tell how long he will be the head coach. Loyalty may have hurt him and not being as involved as he should have been probably didn’t help. Give it time and if it doesn’t work there will be a change. But most true dawg fans will take Richt over Donnan anyday. I don’t know what you are, but you are not a Dawg.
