Richt has ‘big news,’ but not about QBs (PLUS: Hoops transfer finds new home)

(Updated 3 p.m.)

Buck Belue and John Kincade were hoping for big news from Mark Richt on their 680 The Fan show Wednesday afternoon.

“Coach, let’s cut right to the chase today,” Belue said. “We’re expecting this big announcement on the quarterbacks. You want to go ahead and make that today live on our show?”

“Well, I do have big news,” Richt responded. “I got big news.”

And the news is . . .

“We got at least eight or nine guys,” Richt said, “graduating in this semester.”

As for that other piece of news Bulldog Nation awaits: No news yet.

Richt said after the G-Day game that he hoped to have a post-spring depth chart (at quarterback and all other positions) available by the end of this week. But Georgia sports information director Claude Felton sent out an e-mail this morning with word that the depth chart shouldn’t be expected this week after all.

Maybe next week.

The position coaches are still in the process of “exit interviews” with their players. Those one-on-one meetings are held after spring practice each year for coaches to provide players an assessment of where they stand and what they need to work on over the summer. Richt has said the depth chart won’t be posted until all players have had their meetings.

Slowing the process: Several coaches have been out of town this week, visiting practices at other schools.

On the radio with Belue and Kincade, Richt offered no hints about the quarterback pecking order.

“My brother Craig got a chance to go to all the [spring] scrimmages and the G-Day game,” Richt said. “But after every scrimmage he had a different guy he liked.

“So it’s not as clear-cut as anybody might want to think. It’s hard to have somebody just heads and tails above the others when they’re all very talented guys. If one guy was just flat-out better than the other guys by a long shot, it’d be real easy. But the good news is, we’ve got some very capable guys. It’s tough to make the call. ”

———————————————

Drazen Zlovaric, who left Georgia’s basketball program last month with plans to transfer to another school, has found his new home.

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga announced today that Zlovaric, a 6-foot-9 sophomore forward from Serbia, has signed scholarship papers and will join Mocs program. He’ll have to sit out the 2010-11 season under NCAA transfer rules, then will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Zlovaric played in 43 games for Georgia the past two seasons, averaging 6.3 minutes and 1.0 points. He said he was transferring in search of more playing time.

Zlovaric first came to the United States in the fall of 2006 as an exchange student at Cleveland (Tenn.) High School, near Chattanooga. He played one basketball season there. He finished his prep career at the Patterson School in Lenoir, N.C.

“We are thrilled to get him,” Chattanooga coach John Shulman said in announcing Zlovaric’s signing. “He is skilled, athletic and loves the game. His work ethic is off the charts.”

i see what richt means.

mett threw for 5 td’s, murray, 2.

mett threw 1 int, murray 3.

mett completed 64%, murray 58%.

mett threw for more yards than murray too.

yeah, no clear cut winner.

right.

mett had a 5 td to int ratio. (5 td’s, 1 int)

murray had a .67 td to int ratio (2 td’s, 3 int’s)

let’s see, that’s a td to int ratio that’s 800% better than Murray’s.

no clear cut winner.

yeah, whatever.

QB by committee.

Seems inevitable.

Probably won’t be truly settled until a few games are played out.

Even if you name someone the starter now, it’s just pen on paper until kickoff.

Sometimes I think Richt is too nice of a guy to just plainly state that Murray or Mettenberger is our guy and let him get as many snaps as they can. Logan Gray has no business playing QB and has shown that. Why not move him early? This indecision is not good in anyway……Urban, Bob Stoops, etc all have their guy within the first couple of wks…..quit being so nice Richt!

I know a lot of people think it’s gonna be Murray. But I like Mettenberger simply for the way our offense sets up this year. We are strong at tailback and OL with a game changer at wideout. I think our recipe for success is run, run, play action, run, etc…and I like Mettenberger’s arm and size to see over the line with our play action packages. And it’s not like he’s slow, Murray and Gray just happen to be really quick. Just one man’s opinion.

Gunner Dog

start getting mett get the most reps, let murray get a few reps too, in case mett gets hurt. move logan to wr or db. if it’s really close, name them co #1, and split the reps and let mett and murray battle it out in the fall in the real games.

murray knows mett won the 3 scrimmages stats, it’s fair. to bench mett, after he delivered, is to say performance on the field during scrimmage games is less important than practice stats, players will lose credibility in bobo.

richt knows how to work this story, might be the biggest story in college football this year, Georgia’s 3 elite 11 qb’s, who will win the prize?

Where do you get your info from?

Murray: 23-of-32 (72%) for 284 yards, 2 TDs, 2 INTs
Mettenberger: 17-of-26 (66%) for 283 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT

Mett stats are impressive. He’s worked hard on his footwork and his throws are on the money. He is your typical pro-style QB with his size and his arm. If you are running a pro-style offense who’s your guy? CMR talks about having the guy who protects the ball best at QB….now there is no doubt.

The fact that Logan Gray is still in the competition concerns me as to the quality of the other QBs. Gray couldn’t win the starting job last year (although I have to give him a bye with CMR’s loyalty factor for Cox), and looked horrible when he was playing last year.

If neither Mett or Murray can distance themselves from him, I’m not concerned about the good news of three capable guys. I’m beginning to be concerned about the bad news of choosing which is the least of three evils.

Congrats on winning a baseball game against the back end of a pitching staff as the team prepared for conference play.

As for “owning”, you might want to check football from last year (or the last decade), and then do the same with basketball. When was the last time Tech men’s hoops won in Athens? Over 30 years ago, so enjoy Paul Hewitt bugs.

While I agree Mettenberger showed better stats in the spring, that little incident off the field hurts. How do you prepare for the first game if he is your guy but won’t be playing. That puts him starting at USC, remember AT USC. He really hurts himself and the team doing what he did. Hope he learned a lesson. I like his size and arm strength. Peyton isn’t mobile either but he does a great job and no one can dispute that.

flagboy?, it would not be fair to make that assessment. The only scrimmage Mett threw exclusively against the 2nd string was in the G-Day game. Besides, he also had to play behind a 2nd-string OL that was really a 3rd-string due to the injuries of Sturdivant (1st-string), and Strickland and Harmon (2nd-string) to name a few.

Dorsey Hill

April 15th, 2010
10:31 am

Gunner Dog,

Yes, Mett looked the best on G-Day but he played exclusively vs. the 2nd team defense. Murray has been better than Mett overall since they both hit campus, but Murray didn’t have a great G-Day. Considering that David Greene went something like 2 of 13 in a G-Day game isn’t it safe to say that G-Day isn’t the be all end all of the analysis? And you have to keep in mind that IF Mett won the job his first snaps would be in Columbia whereas if Murray gets the job he gets to play vs. UL-Lafayette.

Kevin,

Exactly when has Urban had a tough call at QB? When he got to UF Leak was a senior and Tebow a true freshman. Was that a tough call? When Chris left was installing Tebow as the starter a tough decision? Now he has Brantley, a walk-on and a converted TE. Is that a tough call?

But, perhaps CMR is just too nice like Steve Sprurrier who is trying to decide between a freshman and Garcia. Maybe CMR should model himself after some one who, unlike Spurrier, is tough on QB’s?

DawgBuzz

April 15th, 2010

knoxdawg – I agree. Nothing more difficult for a green QB taking on a agressive SEC defense his first time out. It’s a shame he ( Mett ) can’t just be suspended for the Tech game. All we need is someone to hand the ball off there.

Two observations:

1/I feel sorry for losers like the blogger Odell T. above. It’s pathetic that idiots such as him have got nothing better to do than to shout out insults anonymously. This is the same guy who will flip you off while driving, but if he would be afraid to even look at yuou funny in person since he would surely get his a$$ kicked.

2/To St Simons..not in the same category..we’re used to him..but hey SS, you can do the 25-6 thing for the rest of your life and no one will care like they did in football..at least finally you have a score to taunt Dawg fans with since it didnt work out too well for Tech vs. Georgia in the only 2 college sports most fans care about..football and basketball. I bet if you asked 100 sports fans who won the last college football national championship and 99 could tell you. Baseball..maybe 5, and thats only of one of the five was the cvoach’s mama…in summary: Who cares?

Gunner Dog – it’s not like the two played in the exact same situations in the game. different defenders, play calls, etc. Oh yeah, and multiple weeks worth of practices that transpired outside of the formal scrimmages and GDay game. We don’t know who the best is as fans. I think it may come down to mostly which guy they think the other UGA players will be most comfortable and confident on the field with. Somebody that is serious about winning and holds his teammates accountable.
