Finishing off the G-Day leftovers:
The turnout was enough for Todd Grantham to envision what the place will be like with 92,000-plus in the fall.
“We need to make sure the stadium becomes a benefit to our defense,” the new defensive coordinator said in the locker room after G-Day. “If [it's] loud, with the things we’re going to be doing, it can be very difficult for an offense to change plays [and] protections.
“When you’re loud at home, the offense has to go on a silent count. That means everybody’s moving on the ball. Basically, the advantage that the offense has is no longer there. I’m definitely going to encourage our fans to be as loud as they can be from here on out.”
Tailback, for example. Will Caleb King, who started the final five games last season, or Washaun Ealey be listed as No. 1? Or will they be co-No. 1’s?
In the secondary, Bacarri Rambo figures to be No. 1 at one safety, but will Jakar Hamilton or Nick Williams be No. 1 at the other? And with Brandon Boykin entrenched at one corner, will rising senior Vance Cuff be No. 1 at the other? (The coaches’ spring awards suggest so. Boykin and Cuff were named the most improved defensive players.)
Also, it will be interesting to see where Darryl Gamble is slotted on the post-spring depth chart, given his move from inside linebacker to outside linebacker in the final week of spring ball.
And tight end will bear a look. Aron White is the returning starter, but Orson Charles was working with the first unit much of the spring. Both are expected to have big roles.
If you missed it: Five things we learned from spring practice.

we know who Richt’s gonna pick for the QB spots:
1- Murray 2- Gray 3- Mettenberger
Richt already had his mind made up before the 3 scrimmages, that’s why Murray got so many more reps than the other 2 qb’s.
We’ll all get behind Coach Richt, no matter who he picks, but it’s fun trying to figure it out this week.

Don’t worry Coach Grantham, we will be very loud when the defense is on the field, really love what’s going on so far with the base defense. I appreciate the way that Grantham is engaging the fans which is a stark difference from Martinez’ “don’t ask, don’t tell” platform. Martinez was running some kind of secret society on defense. The only problem was that his schemes were no secret to the opposition.

Did murray really get more snaps? He was only in like 2 series in the first half, before starting the entire second half. Gray was in the entire first half and closed out the last 1-2 series of the second half. Mettenberger played all but 2-3 series in the first and second half. Pretty evenly distributed, although I would’ve liked to see a series or two from mettenberger with the first team.
I hope grantham isn’t dissapointed with the crowd noise. I’ve always been dissapointed with the crowd noise at sanford stadium, although I think part of it is because of the opening of the stadium by the bridge.
I didn’t watch the safeties that close during the game, mostly had my eyes on the qb’s, but I really liked nick william’s hits. Yes he let his temper go that one time causing grantham to go off on him, but is that a bad thing. I know a lot of coaches that say behind the scenes that they want to see a couple of fights during offseason practice. Williams will hopefully learn to control that on gameday and bring back that hard hitting style to UGA football.

If you look at how much time each QB played, it’s kind of obvious who Coach Richt is ranking.
In the 3 Spring scrimmages, Aaron got 56 passes, Logan 42, and Zach had very limited playing time and was left to the 2nd string, about 36 passes.
Pretty sure that’s how the Coaches rank em’ right now.

the real question is Murray or Matt, honestly I was sold on Murray to be our next QB for the next 4 years but Matt proved he can be even better. The stats don’t lie. I think both can be co #1 and Gray should and he will switch to WR because it is clear to me that Gray couldn’t beat out either one of them despite being in the program the longest! Murray has the advantage because of Matt suspension, Murray will start the 1st game and if he prove him self it will be him who will start against SC, if he struggles mightily against South Carolina, Matt will get his chance and if he lead Georgia to victory he will start the following week. basically I see the competition between Murray and Matt to continue until the 4th game of the season. I hope my Dawgs will be unbeaten by then.

I want to hear if anything is being said about Jackson. He looked solid as a 3rd RB and IMO may compete to take 2nd from King.
Also Carlton Thomas has been rumored to line up in the slot some in practice, that sounds like great news. Bobo needs to find ways to use/get him in space. IMO if Thomas were playing with Mullen as OC he would be all over the field making plays. However, I fear that Carlton’s new roll maybe as dynamic as Gray’s package last year.

TheItalianDawg….you do realize that this was a scrimmiage, and the QB’s could’nt get hit. The best way to analyze a QB is when its GAME time and they can get hit. That is when you can see when under pressure, will they make a bad decision such as forcing a pass or not throwing the ball out of bounds, or getting away from pressure. This is how I anaylze a QB. You also have to look at all their practices, not just the G-day game, which was a pracatice, just a telivised scrimmage. Murrar should be the starter the first game since Mett cant play, and its his job to lose, because Mett is a good QB and could start, but the G-day game doesnt mean he’s the best, he was just the best that day

1) Murray 2) Mett 3) Gray. Mett can’t be #1 that just sends a bad message as far as discipline goes. If he can’t start the first game due to suspension he should not be our #1 guy—sorry. Go with Murray and if he can’t get it done bring in Mett. Logan needs to move to WR and be done with QB. He gave it his best shot , he just doesn’t have the arm strength we need. Hutson Mason will be here this summer as well.

If we really want to make the stadium louder then we should consider rearranging the student section. Right now the students (clearly the loudest bunch of fans) are divided and the loudest group faces the open end of the stadium. Not sure how to go about this, but smarter men than I should ponder the stadiums acoustics and where to put the noise makers. Or… all those old fart alumni need to do a better job of getting rowdy

My bet is early depth chart at QB will be (1)Gray, (2)Murray, (3)Met I’m basing this on Gray getting majority of snaps with Red team, Richt’s loyalty to seniority, Murray did not look that great in spring game, and Met is suspended for 1st reg. game. Met looked the best at G-day game, but the suspension really hurts him for now. I did like his poise and strong arm, however, and it will be really interestin to see who is playing quarterback by the 3rd or 4th game of season

I’m figuring, i you go by the number of passes each QB took in the 3 scrimmages, it’s Murray, Gray and Mettenberger, in that order. Also, not a good sign for Mettenberger when he doesn’t take a single snap with the #1 offense or the #1 defense on G-Day.
Which tells me Richt is probably leaning away from Mettenberger because of the suspension, and because he didn’t play good in practices leading up to the scrimmages. And Richt probably wants a dual-threat QB that is mobile and can run, to take the heat off the passing game.
Tebow proved that a QB that can run is a defenses worst nightmare, and Georgia has 2 QB’s that run real well and were both ranked in the top 5 in the country as dual-threat QB’s. That gives those 2 a big advantage over Mettenberger and Mason.
I’m warming up to the idea of having a dual-threat QB back there, especially this season, when our QB’s are so green. Urban Meyer would LOVE ot have Aaron Murray or Logan Gray, believe me, he doesn’t like Brantley not being able to run and avoid sacks.

Good point Paul. Murray did not look good, and Met is suspended for 1st game. This actually makes it easy for Richt to release the early depth chart. He did stress that not too much is to be made of early depth chart. If you think back, Joe Cox was ahead of Mat Stafford when Joe T. got hurt, yet Stafford was the one to take the field when Joe’s injury occured.

BugKiller has a point. I ahve been to Ole Miss, UT, LSU, and Auburn over the past 2 years.
LSU had the most noticeable student section and the entire stadium was quick to rise and get loud.
UT may have been as loud but they were not as quick nor loud as long.
Picking up tickets from my Uncle a 30+ yr season ticket holder. I get more rude looks for standing during important plays than in any other stadium except for maybe Ole Miss.
Adams need to give more to the students and in place of splitting up tix near the bridge and the traditional Railroad track corner, maybe put them in one end. I would like to see them in the east end zone to maximize noise.

If you think about it, a lot of times you’re 3rd and short. If we line up in shotgun with a dual-threat QB, the defense is in a tough situation. If they put people in the box, the QB can throw an easy pass to the tight end (Hernandez destroyed defenses for Florida) or quick lateral pass across to the WR who picks up 1 block or breaks 1 tackle to pick up the 1st down. If they stay back, it’s an easy 1st down for the QB who runs a zone read where he can run, pitch or pitch to a wr reversing field or hand off to the tight end inside. Would LOVE to see Aaron Murray or Logan Gray on a zone read with Ealey back there, and Wooten or Branden Smith coming around for a reverse pitch and Charles, White or Lynch getting that inside hand-off.

I think that you might be totally correct. Logan and Aaron proivde UGA with a real threat out on the corners. A drop back guy is less a threat to run but then, a qucik release that Zack has can negate the on rushers. Plus, ZM is on tall QB and he can see it developing quickly.
UGA has NEVER had three QUALITY Qbs on ONE team like this. Belue and Lastinger were two very good ones. Green and DJ Shockley were two really good ones. Goff and Matt Robinson were two very good ones. Paul Gilbert and Mike Cavan were two really good ones. Kirby Moore and Preston Ridlehuber were two good ones. Larry Rakestraw and Francis Tarkenton were two good ones. Beyond that I was a small fry, pre 1960.
Not in 50 years has UGa had THREE GUYS that can offer their own wrinkle and style of play and lead the team. I really like this, coupled with the incoming Frosh QB Hutson Mason. In 2011 we will have 4.

Otto, once again, the reality trumps the hypothetical. WHO gives up a seat? The Alum that has given BIG money for years, or the recently graduated alum? One is the reason the program exist, and the other just completed the very thing that a freshman, (who might or might not be there next semester) claims gives him the right to it. Is a Graduate less entitled by his association than a first year student?
Alabama, FL, both have lotteries, and nietehr guarantee freshmen a full season pass. I believe Alabama specifically forces them to choose one or the other of a split package. SC has a lottery. ALL big SEC school do what UGA does. The exact number of tickets is a school to school issue, and its useless to compare.
I know for a fact that Chip Towers contacted sveral of them a coupld of years ago, and it turns out UGA actually issued a higher percentage of student tickets. Maybe that has changed, Somebody please post current real info.
I maintain that any student wishing to be at the game is in the game. Its also easy to do the math that even if that were NOT the case, the numbers are so minimal that replacing a 25 yr old with a 19 old in every case, can’t possible affect the outcome of the game.
Now as far as where they sit, that seems like a good debate. I have no idea all the factors are in that decision.
But no matter what you do, UGA fans are not LSU fans.

Jimbo give me a break. Im sure Meyer would like to have Murray as a Gator but there’s no way he’d take him right now over Brantley. Brantley is head and shoulders a better QB 9than Murray and he can avoid sacks just fine. Having 9 of 10 Offensive Lineman from the 2 deep OL returning doesnt hurt either. Also Brantley is much more mobile than Chris Leak ever was and that worked out just fine.

“UGA does not win the NC so they suck or they are lousy and so is CMR.” This type of noise is the out cry from mostly NON college students. Punks ………….they will never attend a class given in a major university setting. Never, ever.
One goes to school to obtain the core education and resulting diploma to get a CAREER. The student might also continue on with grad school, like an MBA or Masters of Ed or MD or Law. THAT is why we go to college. That is why the U of Georgia is fabulous. CAREERS RESULT. if you are an obamaron, then you will not understand what the word ‘Career” means. Sorry.
UGA GRADS for the most part ( I suspect at least 88%) are quite happy with UGA’s overall sports record and in all sports. Why?
The UGA brand is #1 and that is what it is all about ……….MONEY $$$$ flowing BACK to the school. Fan base buy tickets and that provides $$$ flowing back to the University. TV revenues do the same. Bowl revenues, even though split with the sub prime schools, provide $$ for the University. UGA is a RICH SCHOOL and this is part of the OBVIOUS JEALOUSY on here.
Academics, fun times, convertibles, babes and did I mention ……….babes?? and FINE RESULTING CAREERS …….THAT is what the University of Georgia is about.
Go Dogs.

In deep passing situations, a mobile QB can get big plays with his feet by buying extra time when a play breaks down. Murray’s videos of him doing this in high school are off the charts. Logan Gray showed an ability to do that in the G-Day game, extended a drive that would have ended with a great 15 yard scramble out of trouble, and the drive ended with a td.

I think UGA fans will be alot louder now that we have an aggressive defense that will GATA. It’s hard to remain excited when you play soft defense that lets the other team march right back down the field time after time. When we lost to Alabama at home, it wasn’t the lack of fan support or the black uniforms. It was a passive inept defense. I don’t know how good this defense will be, but I am confident it will be a major improvement in spite of losing a dominant defensive line.

2 days ago, Meyer said he didn’t have an offense, and didn’t sound impressed with Brantley. Meyer talked about using Burton, or a tight end at QB if he had to. I’m just relaying what Meyer himself said–Florida has no offense according to Meyer. This was at the end of the Spring after 14 practices and 2 scrimmages.

Well, I am not a current student and I am a true fan. So I guess you are spreading dirty filthy lies too, eh?
Students are in early for big games, so are Alum. Students are coming in late for lesser game, so are alum. SO, no they are most definetely not the first ones in the stadium as an absolute. Some times the alum are loud, some times they are not. I’ve been to some games and the students were turned sideways, unoccupied with anything on the field while the gentleman ahead of me, at probably his only trip, was screaming at every play. You seem to have real issues with seeing everything in bold shades of black and white. And a zero appreciation of subtle humor.

Do you think the players see a difference when fans Stand, shake pom poms, or sit and shake pom poms. When you stand you make the person behind you stand and so on and so forth. You paid for a SEAT so use it until it is time to stand and scream after a good play. I bet you sit your fat BUTT in your EZBoy for the game when you are at home. Maybe there is some security/logistic issues with the student placements. Maybe some smart professor did a study to determine if one section or a split section was better for accoustics.
I say shame on any student NOT being as loud and supportive as they can be no matter where they sit. The escuse that they can’t be grouped with every last fresheman is pretty poor if you ask me. Get loud, what stops them? Seat number? Thats just a socializing issue, not a football support issue.
When I was there we had “block seating”. Gather your stubs together, get 20 seat, and then 40 people crammed in. Obviously many things are different in todays world.
And absoutely the alum could be louder, but that’s has ZERO to do with tickets. Where UGA didn’t allocate student ticket, it was the exact same alum base.
The other way to fire everybody up would be to play better and win the ballgames.

Hey, speaking of “revoking” ticket right, I like the SC system. they have some kind of loyalty/attendance points scale. Don’t go to enough events, back of the line. Not sure they can dictate when the frat boys leave though.

If your DE’s hussle on everyplay like David Pollack did, if your DB’s intercept passes like Champ Bailey did, and if your Safety’s put licks on folks like Greg Belue and Thomas Davis did: believe me fans will get out of their seats and cheer. I appreciate the appeal to the fans and the gameday experience, but ultimately its going to come down to fundamentals. Can anyone explain some of the decisions that have been made at North Avenue Tech?
1. Alabama Linebacker Darwin Hoke hit Tech running back with an elbow and rearranged his nose. After that they decided they did not want to play with the “big boys” and bailed out of the SEC — Stupid move .
2. At one time Grant Field was a nice place to watch a football game. Attendance fell off and they decided to tear down half of the field in order to have sellouts. — Stupid move – they still can’t sell the place out.
3. Being a part of one of the best basketball conferences they play in a gym that holds 6,000 to 7,000. Another stupid move tear down that joke of a basketball gym and build one that can generate more basketball revenue.

JimboDawgs…maybe you should go back and re-read the article that you posted about Florida not having an offense, etc….and what the title really means, dude…that Florida is still changing and developing the offense to fit the current multitude of very talented players. If you want a good review of the Gators spring and what came out of it….go read the spring review story on: http://www.gatorsports.com
The Florida QB situation is just fine (and Brantley is very mobile and avoids the rush exceptionally well). And look out for Jalani Jenkins (top LB recruit in the nation in 2008 and a RS-freshman) at MLB. He is going to make everyone say, “Spikes who?? next year. Unbelieveable talent and unbelieveable strong and fast for a MLB (legit 4.4 speed and quickness and he will knock you head off). And he is backed up by other exceptional MLB talents in Joe Bostic (true soph) and Brandon Beal (RS-soph). Now you know why Luc went to FSU. He would be 4th string at MLB at Florida with not much of a future ahead of him.
Dare read if you will….but actually read more than the title next time!!!!

TampaGator, we are not all going to go the Gator sports webpage to read about how the gaytors did in their spring game- I’m sure it’s truly an objective and independent opinion. Don’t be angry because you could not get into UGA and ended up at UF – just deal with it.

Gaytors? So let me get this straight, you have been getting dominated by Gaytors during my years as a coach? I count 3 Bulldawg wins since I began my coaching career at Virginia Tech……..I will try to do better.

Max, I have been in every section in that stadium, sat with every age, type, kind of fan there is and been doing for 30 yrs. I believe that story about as much as every other story about a Phantom Old Guy that told folks to shut up at a football game.
Odd how some folks seem to have this trouble frequently while other folks never seem to see anything like it. Maybe there is some rational explaination.

Maybe, just maybe, the fans will get loud when there is something to get loud about! This speaks mainly for the defense, which has not been the side of the ball to get too loud to cheer for. If the product on the field warrants it, I am sure the UGA fans can get very vocal. Agreed, our Stadium does not hold the noise level very well, but the open end makes the stadium somewhat unique, me thinks. I would hate to see it completely closed in, but that is just MHO. In the end, the allmighty $$’s will dictate what will happen with regard to the west end.

Hey Gayturworld. If UGA had run a cupcake schedule like Floriduh had the last two years, we probably woulda filled every game too. Know what though, no matter the empty seat, 85,000 show up and it is still a sell out.

It’s not tennis make some noise . I think it’s a good idea to encourage fan’s to be loud on the feild. I am not a season ticket holder ,but have been going to games from Ray Goff , to Joe Cox. The fans are always into rivalry games. Although some of the noon games get a little sleepy. The coach knows that noise can be a factor. SICUM DAWGS!!!!,

ATLDawg…I was just responding to a Dawg fan who went to the ESPN page to “read” about the mighty Gators….but I am not sure he can read because of his lack of comprehension of the main idea of the article. Also…..I went to Florida and then Northwester and ended up as Sr. VP of Marketing and Advertising for major corporation in Chicago and then Atlanta for the past 33 years, and I have personal homes in Atlanta and Tampa…and a condo in a city you might of heard of…Steamboat, Co. Nice place to visit several times in the winter months by the way. My sister, on the other hand, went to Georgia and flunked out of BullDawg land due to being bored by the professors there and partying way too much with drunks who “attended” your great institution back then. She then moved back to Florida (Gainesville actually) and began her own legal sec temp firm. She got the idea back in the 70’s from a Florida grad (who was a lawyer) who went into business with her(she made a lot of money and is now retired and living the good life in California). Nope. I made the right college choice and my sister made the right decision to leave Athens.

Coach Grantham………You are going to get your noise my freind. UGA is loaded with experienced talent this year, and as you know [but are doing a good job of hiding] the 3-4 you are installing is going beautifully……..I understand, while others chatter about how hard the transition will be, that the 3-4 attack defense is alot of dadgum fun for the players………some have waited several years to get the opportunity to pin their ears back, and smack the living crap out of someone………So yes, Coach Todd Grantham, you will have your noise !!! Now lets………GATA !!!! GO DOGS !!!

Pretty rare that a future college QB star goes O TD’s, and 1 Int in a Spring Game like Murray did, and goes on to do well in college football. Maybe Jacoby Harris of Miami before his big breakout, but 9 tmes out of 10, if you can’t at least throw a TD in the Spring game, usually means the person will not be a breakout QB.
Here’s how the last 12 college breakout QB’s did in their Spring game, BEFORE their big year, I challenge you to find QB’s who went on to greatness near what Murray’s stats were for Spring Game, Mettenberger and Logan similarities? Sure, plenty of those, but like Murray’s stats? Not a good sign UGA fans.

Keep in mind, Murray’s stats for the Spring game were:
8 for 19, 96 yards, O Td’s, 1 Int
How many breakout QB’s did similar in accuracy, td’s, and int’s to Murray in the Spring game, then went on to greatness?

Only 1 out of the last 13 breakout QB’s had more interceptions than td’s in their Spring game. Murray had 0 td’s, 1 int, so a -1 td to int ratio. Miami’s Harris was the only other QB that developed into a great one who did that in the Spring game.
90% Murray doesn’t develop. 90% chance Logan Gray or Zach Mettenberger do, if you just look at that aspect.
Not 100% fail safe, but pretty good gauge with these 13 breakout QB’s.
