Grantham wants fans ‘as loud as they can be’; position battles other than QB

Finishing off the G-Day leftovers:

  • Not quite sure how Georgia came up with its announced attendance figure Saturday, since there are no turnstile counts and there were no ticket sales for the free-admission game, but the announced 38,742 seemed about right. The north side of the stadium was closed because of construction behind it, but the south side was pretty full.

The turnout was enough for Todd Grantham to envision what the place will be like with 92,000-plus in the fall.

“We need to make sure the stadium becomes a benefit to our defense,” the new defensive coordinator said in the locker room after G-Day. “If [it's] loud, with the things we’re going to be doing, it can be very difficult for an offense to change plays [and] protections.

“When you’re loud at home, the offense has to go on a silent count. That means everybody’s moving on the ball. Basically, the advantage that the offense has is no longer there. I’m definitely going to encourage our fans to be as loud as they can be from here on out.”

  • All eyes will go immediately to quarterback when Georgia releases its post-spring depth chart,  probably late this week. But it’ll be interesting, too, to see how things shake out at a few other spots.

Tailback, for example. Will Caleb King, who started the final five games last season, or Washaun Ealey be listed as No. 1? Or will they be co-No. 1’s?

In the secondary, Bacarri Rambo figures to be No. 1 at one safety, but will Jakar Hamilton or Nick Williams be No. 1 at the other? And with Brandon Boykin entrenched at one corner, will rising senior Vance Cuff be No. 1  at the other? (The coaches’ spring awards suggest so.  Boykin and Cuff were named the most improved defensive players.)

Also, it  will be interesting to see where Darryl Gamble is slotted on the post-spring depth chart, given his move from inside linebacker to outside linebacker in the final week of spring ball.

And tight end will bear a look. Aron White is the returning starter, but Orson Charles was working with the first unit much of the spring. Both are expected to have big roles.

If you missed it: Five things we learned from spring practice.

Monty,
Texas Tech is in Lubbock, Univ. of Texas in Austin. College Station is home of the Aggies, that be Texas A&M. Just wanted to let you know which city you might have been in! But I am quite sure that it was loud if it was in Lubbock.

Also the Dawgs spring game had free admission. At Bama they give a free ticket and fried chicken lunch, Bear Byant hat, Bama wife beater T-shirt and coupons to the local Walmart and D-Q , two Roll Tide bumper stickers and a case of Golden Flake potato chips.

All the old people around me don’t want to stand up at all and don’t want anyone standing near them either. One old guy told my group to “keep quiet” because we were “being too loud” during the game! I told him where to take it. The dude needs to go back to the nursing home and drink milk and leave the game to the noise makers.

To all talkin' noise!

JimboDawgs…maybe you should go back and re-read the article that you posted about Florida not having an offense, etc….and what the title really means, dude…that Florida is still changing and developing the offense to fit the current multitude of very talented players. If you want a good review of the Gators spring and what came out of it….go read the spring review story on: http://www.gatorsports.com

The Florida QB situation is just fine (and Brantley is very mobile and avoids the rush exceptionally well). And look out for Jalani Jenkins (top LB recruit in the nation in 2008 and a RS-freshman) at MLB. He is going to make everyone say, “Spikes who?? next year. Unbelieveable talent and unbelieveable strong and fast for a MLB (legit 4.4 speed and quickness and he will knock you head off). And he is backed up by other exceptional MLB talents in Joe Bostic (true soph) and Brandon Beal (RS-soph). Now you know why Luc went to FSU. He would be 4th string at MLB at Florida with not much of a future ahead of him.

Dare read if you will….but actually read more than the title next time!!!!

TampaGator, we are not all going to go the Gator sports webpage to read about how the gaytors did in their spring game- I’m sure it’s truly an objective and independent opinion. Don’t be angry because you could not get into UGA and ended up at UF – just deal with it.

Max, I have been in every section in that stadium, sat with every age, type, kind of fan there is and been doing for 30 yrs. I believe that story about as much as every other story about a Phantom Old Guy that told folks to shut up at a football game.

Odd how some folks seem to have this trouble frequently while other folks never seem to see anything like it. Maybe there is some rational explaination.

Maybe, just maybe, the fans will get loud when there is something to get loud about! This speaks mainly for the defense, which has not been the side of the ball to get too loud to cheer for. If the product on the field warrants it, I am sure the UGA fans can get very vocal. Agreed, our Stadium does not hold the noise level very well, but the open end makes the stadium somewhat unique, me thinks. I would hate to see it completely closed in, but that is just MHO. In the end, the allmighty $$’s will dictate what will happen with regard to the west end.

It’s not tennis make some noise . I think it’s a good idea to encourage fan’s to be loud on the feild. I am not a season ticket holder ,but have been going to games from Ray Goff , to Joe Cox. The fans are always into rivalry games. Although some of the noon games get a little sleepy. The coach knows that noise can be a factor. SICUM DAWGS!!!!,

ATLDawg…I was just responding to a Dawg fan who went to the ESPN page to “read” about the mighty Gators….but I am not sure he can read because of his lack of comprehension of the main idea of the article. Also…..I went to Florida and then Northwester and ended up as Sr. VP of Marketing and Advertising for major corporation in Chicago and then Atlanta for the past 33 years, and I have personal homes in Atlanta and Tampa…and a condo in a city you might of heard of…Steamboat, Co. Nice place to visit several times in the winter months by the way. My sister, on the other hand, went to Georgia and flunked out of BullDawg land due to being bored by the professors there and partying way too much with drunks who “attended” your great institution back then. She then moved back to Florida (Gainesville actually) and began her own legal sec temp firm. She got the idea back in the 70’s from a Florida grad (who was a lawyer) who went into business with her(she made a lot of money and is now retired and living the good life in California). Nope. I made the right college choice and my sister made the right decision to leave Athens.

UGA is loaded with experienced talent this year, and as you know [but are doing a good job of hiding] the 3-4 you are installing is going beautifully……..I understand, while others chatter about how hard the transition will be, that the 3-4 attack defense is alot of dadgum fun for the players………some have waited several years to get the opportunity to pin their ears back, and smack the living crap out of someone………So yes, Coach Todd Grantham, you will have your noise !!! Pretty rare that a future college QB star goes O TD’s, and 1 Int in a Spring Game like Murray did, and goes on to do well in college football. Maybe Jacoby Harris of Miami before his big breakout, but 9 tmes out of 10, if you can’t at least throw a TD in the Spring game, usually means the person will not be a breakout QB.

Here’s how the last 12 college breakout QB’s did in their Spring game, BEFORE their big year, I challenge you to find QB’s who went on to greatness near what Murray’s stats were for Spring Game, Mettenberger and Logan similarities? Sure, plenty of those, but like Murray’s stats? Not a good sign UGA fans.

Keep in mind, Murray’s stats for the Spring game were:

8 for 19, 96 yards, O Td’s, 1 Int

How many breakout QB’s did similar in accuracy, td’s, and int’s to Murray in the Spring game, then went on to greatness?

big city roller

April 14th, 2010

Only 1 out of the last 13 breakout QB’s had more interceptions than td’s in their Spring game. Murray had 0 td’s, 1 int, so a -1 td to int ratio. Miami’s Harris was the only other QB that developed into a great one who did that in the Spring game.

90% Murray doesn’t develop. 90% chance Logan Gray or Zach Mettenberger do, if you just look at that aspect.

Not 100% fail safe, but pretty good gauge with these 13 breakout QB’s.
