What we learned from spring practice (PLUS: injury update, Bulldog Club tour)

If you’re looking for definitive answers about a football team, spring practice isn’t the time or place. That’s what fall is for.  Yet Georgia’s spring practice, which ended with the G-Day game on Saturday, provided a few revealing threads:

1. The offensive line is benefiting from the experience young players gained the past couple of years.

Example: Cordy Glenn. When the offensive coaches named their spring MVP, they chose the left guard, who enters his junior season with 23 UGA starts already.

“Early on, obviously as a freshman, he had to depend on a lot of guys next to him to help him out,” offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said. “Now he pretty much knows what we’re doing, and he’s able to execute and then use his God-given ability to dominate. And that’s what kind of player we think he can be.”

Bobo said the entire first-team offensive line -– left tackle Clint Boling, Glenn, center Ben Jones, right guard Chris Davis and right tackle Josh Davis –- had a strong spring. The group will be reinforced if Trinton Sturdivant, who started as a freshman in 2007 but missed the past two seasons because of knee surgeries, and Tanner Strickland, who missed last season because of shoulder surgery, return this summer as planned.

2.  Todd Grantham is . . . intense.

G-Day offered little insight into Georgia’s new 3-4 defensive scheme, but it did provide a good glimpse of the new defensive coordinator. Grantham is a fiery presence on the sideline –- even in a spring intra-squad game.

“Well, anytime you’re playing, it’s important, and that’s the thing I wanted to get across to our players,” Grantham said. “Any time you step on the field, it’s important you do your job. And our job is to hold people to low numbers and to stop people.”

“That’s what you want . . . a guy that’s got some fire in him,” said head coach Mark Richt, known for his low-key sideline demeanor. “I think it’s probably good to have somebody who’s a little more outwardly excited. I do get excited on the inside, but it’s good to have that energy on the sidelines.”

3. Three NFL-bound defensive tackles will be sorely missed.

Defensive line coach Rodney Garner was reminded of the talent lost  from last season’s line when he looked up at practice one day last week and saw Geno Atkins visiting. “I was, like, ‘As big a headache as you were, I’d sure love to have that headache back,’” Garner said with a laugh.

The loss of three senior defensive tackles –- Jeff Owens, Kade Weston and Atkins -– and the transition to the 3-4 defense made the spring difficult for the D-line. Practices ended with a No. 1 unit of DeAngelo Tyson at nose, Abry Jones at left end and Demarcus Dobbs at right end. Of the three, only Dobbs has started a college game, and he admits the 3-4 is a different world for him.

“We’re making some progress . . . but we’ve still got a ways to go,” Garner said. “DeAngelo and Abry, they’ve been role guys. Now you got to step up to the plate and be the guy. It’s different being a guy and the guy.”

4. Washaun Ealey is going to be even better than last season.

You didn’t see it in the G-Day game, mostly because the coaches didn’t want opponents to see much, but the rising sophomore tailback had a terrific spring by all accounts.

Ealey ran for 717 yards in nine games (two starts) last season and seems hungry for much more. He is in better shape,  has a better grasp of the offense and is working with better “tempo and confidence,” Richt said.

As for the other half of last season’s tailback tandem, Caleb King missed the final week of spring practice, including G-Day, because of a sore, swollen knee. “We think he’ll be fine in a week or two and able to do everything all summer,” Richt said.

5. The quarterback debate is just beginning.

You’ll get a real-time gauge on the quarterback race, as well as the competition at all other positions, when coaches unveil their post-spring depth chart, probably late this week. But the spring’s fluctuating performances suggest the Aaron Murray-Logan Gray-Zach Mettenberger battle will remain fluid -– and hotly debated, to be sure.

“Ultimately, everybody’s going to have to compete again during fall camp, go out and take reps and make plays and run the offense again,” said Gray, the only quarterback in the program who has ever taken a snap in a college game.

Truth is, the quarterback debate won’t subside until one player proves himself unequivocally in games that count. A key question in picking a starter, Richt said, is: “Can he handle the pressure of the job?” And “this is just the beginning,” Richt added, “of feeling the pressure of the job.”

————————————

Good news from UGA today on the G-Day injury front:

  • RT Josh Davis‘ shoulder injury was just a bruise.
  • OLB Cornelius Washington’s leg injury also was a bruise.

Both players “should be fine,” UGA said.

————————————–

UGA’s annual tour of Bulldog Club meetings around the state begins next week.  All stops on the “Dawg Days” tour start with social hour at 6 p.m., followed by program at 7 p.m. Here’s the schedule and who’ll be attending from UGA:

My predictions for the fall, offense well be not as good as expected, defense will be a lot better than expected, and we will have our best special teams since 1980. For the dogs to be successful, they must have long time consuming drives. The defense will be good but young, and will need to spend less time on the field than we have shown of late.

Last time I checked, Richt’s record against Alabama is 3-1, who owns who. Just trying to help you out a little there, you don’t seem to understand things very well. 3 wins, 1 loss, get it?

Last time I checked Bama won 4 of the last 7 against Georgia and is 36-25 against the dawgs over all. Glad to see Richt was able to get those 3 wins against probation and scholarshiped reduced Bama teams from 2002-2007. Beating a Bama team that is at full strength in scholarship numbers instead of playing with 21 fewer players is a little more difficult as richt found out on blackout night.

boo boo bing,

Not sure what manner of delusional world you live in. Richt went after Kirby Smart 1st, then Muschamp, then 2 other guys said they weren’t interested. Grantham was the 5th freaking choice. Good lord didn’t you freaking know that? His defenses at Cleveland were 30th in the 2 years he was there. He was fired and when you picked him up from Dallas he wasn’t even a dang coordinator. He was just a position coach. good grief. Unbelievable how you try to revise history.

dude, you’re going around in circles, here’s all I’m saying:
1) Georgia is #1 in rushing lately at 247 a game over the last 5 game sof the season, Bama and Florida are both at 192 a game, the trends are trending Georgia.
2) Richt is 3-1 against Bama
3) Our defensive coach taught you what you know, so your success on defense proves what a great teacher Grantham is
4) Mettenberger has played better than McElroy so far this Spring.

I am flattered Bama fans are swarming over to the Georgia site. Have a great night Bama fans, I’ll let you guys continue to talk in circles.

You know, after very carefully anal-izing and disecting all of these various Spring stats and then putting them into the large Cadron Particle Collider, I have determined that this UGA team to be the greatest in modern football history. Wait a second…think I might just try to load some actual real game stats in there…see what happens…wait a second…ok…give it a minute, just went on spin cycle… almost there…Ah, never mind…will get back with you later…

Bama Fan…I will be the first to admit bama has a great tradition and did give Geaogia and old fashioned beating in the “blackout” game; however, don’t sleep on the dawgs this year…if we get good QB play, we have 10 starters returning on offense. There is a reason Saban wanted Grantham. Lastly, and this is not a slam I truly mean it. I am glad bama is at full strength with good players and Saban. It makes for a much more interesting and competitive SEC; but, I hope those probations don’t come back. Saban is not above bending the rules. Also, I hope his wonderlust doesn’t return. All in all, I hope you guys have a great season, minus that SEC title game against the Dawgs of course…

Tim, that is not what I saw at all.

The OL gave up SACKS all game long. The OL failed to establish the run, as well.

CTG is not intense; he is a coach who will not put up with the crap going on in Athens the last 4 years both off the field and on it. He kicked his player out of the game. It would have been offsetting 15-yard penalties because Washaun Ealey decided to be thrown out of the game, just after Nick Williams was.

We have a far better defense this year because the guys we graduated went 10-10 vs SEC East teams. You don’t miss players who don’t get the job done. Instead, you are glad you are replacing them, and of course in the Fall we get a lot more help for the Defense. Nothing for the offense, but lots for the Defense.

You are correct that Washaun Ealey got only 2 starts, and not even the last 2 games. Nevertheless, Caleb King needs to have a proper surgery of his knee injured in high school. Let the guy go 4 years now into his career here this season, and still the high school surgery is causing him issues ALL THE TIME.

There is nothing fluid about the QB debate. Zach Mettenberger out-performed Aaron Murray in all 3 scrimmages in a row. If you cannot see that he is going to be drafted in the NFL Draft, that is your problem Tim. You have gushed about little average speed poor arm poor decision-making no experience lining up under Center Aaron Murray and now that he clearly is not # 1, you hang on to it’s still fluid. Read that to mean that what you said about Aaron Murray, has not materialized as I said it would not. I still think his arm is sore, and all the sacks prove I am also correct about his lack of speed.

So, basically I do not agree with ANY of your observations of the G-Day Game at all.

As to fellow UGA fans who see fit to say Florida doesn’t have a QB, excuse me, John Brantley is a proven performer, seasoned and ready to take over. Something we have failed to do in 2006, 2009 and now in 2010. I know that Urban Meyer cannot coach with his health as he proves daily, but Coach Richt is in a ton of hot water and picking the wrong QB to finally try to get ready, and not doing a good job of that with the oft-injured Caleb King behind an under-performing OL with a complete lack of depth at WR and screw ups unable to say Orson Charles is Starter at TE until the 12th game of the 13-game season (in 14-game seasons nowadays), what we have is a head coach who said that he wanted to give Mike Bobo free room to breathe and now has taken all that breathing room away with Coach Richt now calling ALL the shots on Offense.

It was David Greene who was 0-11 on 3rd down conversions vs Florida his 2nd year and not until his 4th year that David Greene beat Florida at all. His pass to Terrence Edwards was as high over his head, wide open for the TD as Aaron Murray’s pass was yesterday over the head of wide open for the TD Orson Charles, who by the way caught another poorly thrown pass from Aaron Murray drilled behind him.

Quit making your excuses for David Greene and Aaron Murray. Those are NOT NFL Quarterbacks. Zach Mettenberger is.

So, while you all sit there and jump on the Zach Mettenberger bandwagon, I point out that I said all along that he should have been the QB last year. And, that this is exactly where we would be in the QB race. Exactly as I said all along.

As much as i would like to see Murray QB because he can run with the ball , something that Gray should have done last year the few times he got in the games but didn’t, i think he is too short. All you have to do is pressure Murray and he throws interceptions. UGA fans will not tolerate that again this year, we had enough last year for a life time, with Cox. When these QB’s throw interceptions they negate one of the best field goal kickers in the United States. Blair Walsh could score 9 to 15 point per game if the QB will get smart and play like he is part of a team and not that the game rest only on his shoulders. UGA actually had a great team last year at 8 and 5. Very few teams could turn the ball over that many times as they did and still win 8 games. I went to school and graduated from UGA in the early 70’s and have been a super fan since and don’t ever remember beating our self’s with turnovers as much as we did last year. WHOEVER win the QB job needs to prove he has a functioning brain this year or we will have a repeat of 2009.

BuLLdawg

Exactly.

But actually, Matthew Stafford fumbles and interceptions, 52, matched his TD pass total, also 52 in his 3 years here.

So, what you have for the last 4 years, is exactly a repeat of the previous year every year since DJ Shockley graduated with Honors in 2005.

4 years in a row averaging 14 interceptions per year.

4 years in a row averaging 21 fumbles per year.

4 years in a row of penalties averaging # 96 in the Nation.

I’ll tell ya what we learned: NOTHING!!! Nobody learns anything at spring practice. If I had dime for every player that had an outstanding spring and then bombed the following season, or vice versa. Well, I would have a lot of dimes. The spring game is a way to get another look at the talent pool you have for asset distribution (i.e. which kids need to be moved to new positions, confirming which kid will be your starter going into the summer, etc.) It is definately not the end all, be all.

Maybe the most compelling game of the year will be in Columbia 9/11. Here is Richt who’s seat is starting to warm up desperate to get off to a good start going into hotile territory against one of the best defenses in the league. Then there is Spurrier equally desperate to win big with his best team yet and then perhaps exit the game after a big season. Sort of concerned for Richt in that one. We’ll see how Richt does after this likely loss.

Ok, if you want the formula for beating the gators on a consistant basis where here it is: First you must not kill yourself with penalties and unforced errors, you must have a good game plan and play with high intensity the entire game, Clearly you must have talent on the same level if not better and you must use that talent that best fits your team chemistry. Too many years the dawgs seem to get it in their heads that one mistake or two and they are done for. We must play with a lot of confidence and not be intimidated by the gators past record with us. I don’t buy into the fact that Coach Richt cannot beat Meyer as some do, mostly gator fans, I beleive both are very good coaches, but until Coach Richt and staff can win their share of games against the gators this debate about Coach Richt’s abilities will continue. I think on a previous post regarding Mack Brown at Texas compared greatly with Coach Richt and the dawgs. I remember a time when the gators were being manhandled by the dawgs on a regular basis and to their credit they have turned that around..Dawg fans we must accept that we will never dominate the gators on a regular basis, they have too much talent, no matter who the coaching staff is, but we will win our share against them again, will it happen this year, don’t know, but i do believe we have taken steps to make this game a rivalary again, but we must prove it on the field. I read on these blogs all the chest pumping from not only the gator nation but also the dawg nation..thats fun and entertaining but there anyone who thinks they no what will happen with either team this year has never stepped on a football field. There will be many factors that will determine the success of both teams this season. I have read numerous posts about their respective spring games and how great this person was or great the offense or defense was or was not. Its a spring game and every team approaches it different based on what they are trying to do for the upcoming season and what the depth chart should be, so you can throw out alot of statistics from the spring games, doesn’t mean a whole lot except for the fans to brag about. I will close with these remarks, say what you want to about Coach Richt, but if you have ever met the man and his family you would know what kind of person he is and just how proud everyone should be to have him as our coach. I also know until he can beat the gators on a consistant basis, the dawg nation will not be happy and the gators will continue to bash him. My money is on Coach Richt and that he knows what he needs to do to get the dawgs to that level. He took a step towards that this off season and i feel assured he will continue his evaluation of our program. What people forget is that really there has not been a team in the last few years that have been beating the gators on a regular basis, but somehow i feel that change will be coming, but only time will tell.

Fast Eddie brings up the aging question, how does Richt stack up against other coaches? One thing is for certain, he is (1) too loyal and practices the “promote from within” philosophy too much, which leads to (2) our assistants have been vastly inferior to those at UF, Alabama, and even UT. Something Richt has sought to rectify beginning in 2010. Lets hope it works and it’s not too late for his career at UGA. Anyone can listen to Grantham for 5 minutes and realize he is miles ahead of Martinez in running a D. Specifically, concerning Saturday, he talked about, the game being a series of adjustments based on what the O shows you, etc. Under the old regime, we ran basically the same D with very few adjustments NO MATTER WHAT. Watch the film from last year’s SC game, Spurrier probably said one thing, wherever the blitz comes from, throw the ball there! The WR will break off his route in that spot, happened 15 times and SC kept moving the chains. Don’t expect that to happen under the new guys.

BuLLdawg, I know, and you know, that you were all about Mett starting last year, but somehow I am not sure that everybody else is buying it. Odd.

After last years G-day game it was reported:

…it’s hard to overlook Murray’s combined statistics from three spring scrimmages: 13-of-21 passing for 325 yards and three touchdowns, with no interceptions.
Mettenberger’s statistics in the same scrimmages were polar opposite: 2-of-18 for 43 yards, with two interceptions.

Prompting YOU to say:

“Logan Gray looked significantly ahead of the two (2) more freshmen quarterbacks signed. Why did we need instead of another defensive end, 2 more scholarship quarterbacks? Logan Gray, now, is no longer going to play Special Teams.

Mettenberger? We needed Mettenberger this year too? Zach Mettenberger was (intercepted). He and Murray are not close to Number 2 Logan Gray. Zach not only did not complete a pass, he also threw a miserable interception. ”

Then the week prior to the 1st game you declared:

“Our recruiting class did very well getting here ready to play, and there are significant players for us in this latest group, just not a QB to replace to Joe Cox and Logan Gray for this season. Next season, Aaron Murray will be a big help to Logan Gray. We will be a young and very talented team this year.”

Forget the various accusations that the coaches don’t know anything about talent and not recruiting well prior to and after that.

Not to mention the countless times you have said that getting arrested is the absolute worst thing any player can do to YOUR school. Total support of Mett being named the starter.

Clearly folks don’t know you as the man who would have been very complimentary of the coaches for playing Mett (self-proclaimed nowhere close to ready) last year, and would have never blasted them for not playing the other guy, no matter the outcome. The fact that him starting last was nowhere near a glimmer in your eye till it retroactively occured to you really shouldnt give anybody the wrong idea about you saying “all along” that he should have.

The cox situation and the Grey situation are 2 entirely different things. Murray was hurt last year. Mett was not ready last year. Cox beat out logan. cox was the best option. We would have gone 4-8 with any of the others playing.

Remember not to forget Hutson Mason in the QB mix. Mason will be a formidable competitor to Mettenberger, Murray, and Gray when he comes to campus this summer. The new QB positioning will only reflect the competition to date after Spring Practice. Mettenberger should be the number 1 QB after his play compared to the others. But, when summer comes, lookout for Hutson Mason. This only makes the Bulldogs better with all this talent at QB. Woof, Baby, Woof!! Go Dogs!!

That’s right about Mason, threw for over 500 yards in a playoff game, and 4500 yards, and 55 td’s his senior year.

I’d split the reps right now between Murray and Mettenberger until Mason gets on campus, move Logan to WR. Hutson Mason will battle for the back-up position at least.
