Who’s No. 1 QB? Answer this week, Richt says (PLUS: more from G-Day)

(Updated 7 p.m.)

ATHENS – The G-Day game produced no immediate answer to the No. 1 question in Bulldog Nation: Who is Georgia’s  starting quarterback?

“I know everyone wants to know what’s going on, wants to know who the starter is, and I couldn’t name the starter right now if I wanted to,” coach Mark Richt said after Saturday’s intra-squad game. “I really don’t think I could.”

But Richt said hopes to have a new quarterback depth chart by the end of this coming week.

Between now and then, he and offensive coordinator Mike Bobo will review video of the quarterbacks’ performances throughout spring practice, which concluded with the G-Day game.

And Richt cautioned that whoever is No. 1 on the post-spring depth chart won’t be guaranteed of keeping the position into the Sept. 4 season opener against Louisiana Lafayette.

In the G-Day game, won by the “Black” team 17-7 over the “Red” team before a crowd of 38,742, strong-armed redshirt freshman Zach Mettenberger had the best statistical performance of the three quarterbacks.

He completed six of 10 passes for 150 yards for the Black team, including touchdown throws of 20 yards to walk-on wide receiver Rhett McGowan and 39 yards to tight end Arthur Lynch.

Mettenberger, who is suspended from at least the first game of the season because of his arrest near Valdosta last month on five misdemeanor charges, worked only with the second-team offense and against the second-team defense Saturday. The other quarterbacks, Logan Gray and Aaron Murray, worked with both the first- and second-team offense.

“Mettenberger certainly had a nice day, there’s no doubt about that,” Richt said. “But I think they all did well.”

Gray completed seven of 13 passes for 102 yards and one touchdown — a 7-yard toss to wide receiver Kris Durham – for the Red team and three of four passes for 30 yards for the Black team.

Murray completed eight of 19 passes for 96 yards (with one interception) for the Red team and two of three for no net yards for the Black.

Mettenberger was not available for comment afterward, per Georgia’s policy for suspended players.  Both Gray and Murray said Mettenberger had his best day of the spring.

As for their own days:

“I think I did decent,” Murray said.

“I thought it went pretty well,” Gray said.

Now they await word from Richt and Bobo on a pecking order.

“I think it’s a close competition. I think it’s a great competition,” Murray said. “I think all of us, throughout the spring, have really stepped up our game.”

Said Gray: “Obviously this game was big, but it wasn’t a deciding factor for everything.”

While the G-Day game gets the most attention because it is open to the public and televised, the other spring practices, particularly two earlier closed scrimmages, get equal or greater weighting from the coaches.

“After every scrimmage, you might say one guy did better than another one,” Richt said. “I think they all had their day.”

The upcoming depth chart “will gauge where we think [the quarterbacks] are right now, but it won’t necessarily be who will start when the first game rolls around,” Richt said. “It will indicate who will be where when we start [preseason] camp.”

——————————————

Georgia put its 3-4 defense on public display for the first time Saturday -– sort of.

To avoid giving opponents a peek at the new defense, the Bulldogs were extremely guarded in how much of the playbook they showed. (Virtually none, players said.) And to keep from exposing how the defense would react to certain situations, the offense was toned down, too.

Still, new defensive coordinator Todd Grantham seemed pleased, particularly with his No. 1 unit.

“The biggest thing I was pleased with was how we worked the game and adjusted to what happened,” Grantham said. He noted that one specific running play went for a long gain in the first half but was stopped for no gain when tried again in the second half.

Grantham said he was impressed with the play of inside linebacker Akeem Dent, outside linebacker Justin Houston and the cornerbacks.

Said Houston: “I think the defense did a great job, especially holding the No. 1 offense to seven points. It was a great confidence builder, especially since they have been sticking it to us all spring.”

Fans got a first look Saturday at Grantham on the sideline. He’s intense, to say the least.

“That’s what you want . . .  a guy that’s got some fire in him,” Richt said. “Everybody knows my demeanor and has a little bit of a feel for that. I think it’s probably good to have somebody who’s a little more outwardly excited. I do get excited on the inside, but it’s good to have that energy on the sidelines.”

———————————————–

Just one penalty was called in the game. That particularly pleased Richt, given the Bulldogs’ No. 113 rank in the nation in penalties last season. . . Offensive tackle Josh Davis banged up his shoulder. The extent of the injury was not immediately known. . . .  Tailback Caleb King didn’t play because of a strained knee. Richt said the injury isn’t a long-term concern. . . . Linebacker Richard Samuel did not play because of a concussion suffered at practice this week. . . . The Black team wore white jerseys (with black numbers). . . . Safety Nick Williams had the day’s high in tackles (7). . . . Not much was happening in the running game. Washaun Ealey had just 22 yards on seven carries for the Red team. Dontavius Jackson and Carlton Thomas ran for 43 and 41 yards, respectively, for the Black.

I wasn’t at the game and didn’t even see it on TV but it is clear to me that Murray is in the lead wit Mett suspended and Gray returning punts. I can clearly see that all the way from Kauai????

Meyer’s got to be dissapointed with his new defensive coach. 3 months of practice, and then in the big Spring game, the NFL defensive coach gives up 51 points to a QB with a 41% completion rate? Uh oh. Looks like the SEC game all over again–no defense.

Alabama did the same thing in their scrimmage, they gave up over 50 points too.

Both defenses are challenged in 2010.

Only Georgia’s defense held the other offense.

Yeah baby.

Murray looked taller than 6′ 1”, I think he’s grown some this year, about 6′ 2” or 6′ 3” or so maybe. Pretty big guy. Reminds me of Drew Brees the way he moves.

Woods’ shot failed to stay on the top slope of the green and trickled 70 feet away from the pin. He ran his birdie putt nearly 20 feet past the hole and ended up with a bogey four. On the next hole, Woods cursed again after a wayward approach shot. He would go on to card another bogey.

Aaron isn’t the tallest (he’s not anywhere near 6′2″) but if he can deliver the ball, who cares? He’s got the footwork and can make things happen and can throw accurately on the run.

I’m worried about penalties. The refs were not calling ‘em today. The defensive line jumped offsides several times without getting called. Michael (see above) mentioned Mett taking off his helmet, and Belue mentioned a defensive player tripping a receiver. On top of all that, Nick Williams clotheslined Tavares King on one play, and almost got into a fight with Washon Ealey (who should’ve been ejected) the next. Hopefully, the coaching staff will see all this and get it corrected in August.

I have zero confidence the coaches will get this right. Zach Mettenberger beat Aaron Murray, not only today, but in the other reported scrimmage too. Aaron Murray was reported as injury prone, mostly because of his size. His 4.7 speed in the 40-yard dash is NOT FAST and his size will allow The SEC defenders to do what they did to him today again, get all over his butt.

When you drop your arm down to fling the ball and it is only a short pass you complete, you are not stretching SEC defenses. Deep passes were a huge big glaring advantage for Zach Mettenberger. His short passes were every bit as good as Aaron Murray’s, if not there too, even showing better pocket presence. From what I saw Zach Mettenberger will be a higher NFL Draft Pick. In fact, I am not even sure little Aaron Murray will be drafted.

Now that we are clear on that, Aaron Murray will start.

Zach Mettenberger is like all the Penalties I saw out there today. Coach Richt was pleased there was only 1 penalty called. Give me a break. We had movement on offense on a myriad of plays. Washaun Ealey punched Nick Williams, and then Coach Todd Grantham threw Nick Williams out of the G-Day game and 3 times told Williams to get off the field and stay there, by himself.

Fumbles

Interception

9-4 or 10-3.

Oh, so you think because you thought it before this second season started, when Aaron Murray has been injured since before he came on campus and has remained so, that Coach Richt cannot start Zach Mettenberger against South Carolina on the Road at Night to begin SEC play, since you prefer Aaron Murray’s one-game experience against a team you laugh at.

Holding penalties

Porous Offensive Line play again today

Could not block for the run

Could not block for the pass

8 sacks in the game

And, you think Aaron Murray is mobile. He is itty-bitty, and injury prone and NOT FAST.

Caleb King injury not serious.

Really ?

Perhaps we should all drink that Kool-Aid.

Caleb King played against Michigan State and had 0 yards.

Caleb King played against Georgia tek had 1 rush for 1 yard in loss

Caleb King could not play against Kentucky.

Caleb King could not play against Auburn.

Caleb King played against Florida and had 1 rush for 1 yard in loss

Caleb King played against Alabama had 5 yards rushing in loss

Caleb King played against South Carolina had 7 yards rushing

Then, last year Caleb King was injured most of Fall practice

Caleb King could not play against Okie State, another loss

Caleb King could not play against South Carolina

Caleb King had 8 rushes vs LSU for 7 yards in loss

Caleb King could not play vs vols, another loss

Caleb King played vs Vandie, rushed for total of 14 yards

Caleb King had grand total of 14 yards vs Florida, loss

Caleb King came on at the end of the year, only time his career

Would you quit telling me how great Caleb King is please

Washaun, what’s that all about on TV, bush league son

You punch your own teammate Nick Williams

DJ Shockley = Aaron Murray please

DJ Shockley is a bigger stronger better arm world class speed

Not 4.7 like Aaron Murray but 4.4

I said BEFORE G-Day Game, you would be in here make excuses

Aaron Murray had 6 dropped passes you report

Aaron Murray played with 1st String Offense.

Aaron Murray’s passes were behind the receivers ALL DAY

Aaron Murray’s bomb landed in the turf 20 yards from anyone

Aaron Murray

THREW INTERCEPTION

Aaron Murray was SACKED ALL DAY, where was his speed ?

Sanders Commings was BURNED

That too was Zach Mettenberger’s pass.

Caleb King is a redshirt Junior who has not done a damn thing

Did anyone count all the fumbles ?

We average 21 fumbles a year every year of the last 4 years

I was Not impressed by the OL play again today

We lose 14 seniors after this season, all starters and 5 juniors

Little Carlton Thomas fumbled again

Kris Durham fumbled

Why in the Hell did Logan Gray play the entire 1st half 1st Team ?

Aaron Murray is NOT READY

Aaron Murray turned NO HEADS today

Aaron Murray played for both 1st Team and 2nd Team

Where was the running game today ?

Logan Gray’s lone long run, was a Boykin SACK.

Coach Grantham don’t mess around. I was 36 rows up and could him expressing his dis-pleasure with some of the players on the bench. That’s what we need. Good things are coming on defense. Go Dawgs!

I liked what I saw but actually there was nothng to base any opinion on. The 3-4 was not in place and the QB’s ran basic offensive plays. I loved the play of Mettenberger; great arm and acurate too! Who cares if he was playing against the second team defense? He had the second team offense protecting him! Grey still sputters and Murray was number 1 on dropped passes! No we do not have a super-star QB this year but we have 3 who look like “team 1st” players for a welcome change. And I agree with the Murray first, Met second and Grey as a WR and emergency QB assessment. GO DAWGS

Immobile vs mobile QB

April 11th, 2010
9:47 am

UGA has two very mobile, very athletic QBs that can hum it from the pocket or rolling our away from the rush. Murray and Gray offer this tyle.

Zack is the prototypical drop back QB with a very, very accurate arm AND with zip on the pass. He appeared to be far and away the more poished of them all, as far as pur passer. He stepped up nicely in the pocket too. He was having fun and Murray was not, late in the game. Murray is emotional and had better reign that in come fall. This is about 65% of Aaron’s issues right now, being green and all. He will be fine.

These are good problems to have. I was blown away by Zack’s pin point passes and was also somewhat taken back by Aaron’s over throws and too high throws. Two of these should have been easy TDs ………..one to wide open AJ Green and Orson Charles crossing at the goal line wide open. Add these two misses to Aaron’s totals and he would have 2 TDS and about 80 more yds. He looked like he was throwing the ball out of a silo when the defenders pushed him into a pocket. He has to be mobile or his abilities are greatly diminished. He had the only pic for this one reason.

Logan did what I know that he can do. He rolls out nicely and he can run to the corners and he can also help UGA. He is multi talented.

I rate them this way: Zack, Logan and Aaron. The UGA game was just that way.

Go Dogs.

In last years GDAY game the only player that could effectively throw the ball was METT. This year he threw it better. He has the best arm on the team, did last year too! Whether he has the emotional stabillity to lead the team may be another story. RIght now, I’d say it is Mett, Murray and Gray. I’m not oppossed to a multi QB offense if that is what it takes, might have been able to make some good things happen last year with that deal. Particularly in the Ok State Game, and the Kentucky, Game. Fla, UT and LSU, probabally wouldn’t have made a difference.

Urban Meyer's Luck

April 11th, 2010

Meyer is so predictible. He did exactly what I said he would do.

On March 31, at 3:33, I predicted Brantley would SUDDENLY go from being a 41% completion QB to an 82% completion rate.

Here’s the link to those who don’t know how to pick Urban Meyer’s brain:

http://blogs.ajc.com/uga-sports-blog/2010/03/30/richt-reclaims-his-spot-in-qb-meetings/comment-page-3/

Unfortunately, by trying to build his QB’s confidence up (Brantley had atrocious outings in the other 2 scrimmages–he needed at least 1 good day), he had to tear down his defense’s confidence. Bad move. It will cost him dearly in the fall.

BuLLdawg -

Is it possible you could exagerate a little bit more!!!????

Sorry, but your assessment of Murray is not even close to accurate. For anyone who was there (I was), it was clear that overall Zach was the best QB for the day. Stressing, for the day. For anyone who was there, they would have to be impressed with Murray’s arm… mostly for its potential. Of the three UGA QB’s Murray has the most NFL type arm. His release is much quicker than either Gray or Mett and he throws lazer like passes. I will grant you that his interception ratio is certainly a concern. Ialso should remind you of the number of dropped passes. Murray’s completion percentage should have been higher if our receivers could hang on to the ball.

You have to also take into account Mett was with the #2 team all day long, so we still don’t know what he would have done against better D players and D players that could tackle the QB. It’s a lot easier for the QB when they know they can’t be hit. I’m still concerned about how slow Mett is back there. Better than last year, for sure… but Zach ain’t no Fran Tarkenton.

My prediction is that Richt and Bobo will name Gray and Murray as co number 1’s coming out of Spring. The reason for that is that Gray has the most experience running the offense and although his numbers were Cox like, that’s just the way Richt rolls. They will give Murray the co #1, because Mett is suspended for the first game.

In the final analysis this G-Day was meaningless in terms of QB pecking order!!!

Denver Dog -

I was also at last years G-Day game and either you have total amnesia or can’t put down the crack pipe. Mett’s G-Day performance last year was by FAR the WORST of our QB’s. He threw the most INT’s, and ran around with 25 lbs. of cement in each shoe. The post game discussion from fans leaving the stadium last year was that Mett has no future as a UGA QB and would probably transfer. That’s how poorly he played and looked.

What makes Mett’s performance this year so amazing is how far he’s come in 12 months. Although he is not even close to being fleet footed at least he didn’t look like he was wearing Frankenstein shoes – like last year.

In the end I don’t care who plays QB as long as they play significantly better than Cox. Personally, I don’t think Logan Gray can play significantly better than Joe Cox. If he was capable of that type of performance he would have played more last year. In 2010 the QB race should be between Murray and Mettenberger. May the best player win out.

Columbus Dawg

April 11th, 2010
12:09 pm

Before I start, let me say that I am as impressed with Coach Richt’s character as anyone. That being said, he should be told going into the season what is expected of the 2010 Bulldog team. The 2010 football schedule is the easiest that the Dawgs will have had in five years. There are not more than two opposing teams with the talent to hang with UGA, probably Florida and Auburn as it looks now. If UGA loses to one or both of these teams, then yes there will be dissapointment shown, but a loss to any other team on this schedule is unacceptable. The excuses have already run thin. One of the most glaring weakness that Richt has shown is the inability to make the right choices about what players are on the field. Not just AT the QB position, but also allowing WM to dictate the lineups on defense. I’m not going to mention players by name here, but long time Georgia fans know. If UGA loses any game that it should win (there were three of those games in 2009) then UGA should look long and hard at It’s Head Coach position. The time for poor decision making is long past.

RedandBlack

April 11th, 2010
12:10 pm

The Georgia Bulldogs had a great day yesterday at G-Day. The defense looked like they found some teeth over the break from the bowl game. There were some good performances by a number of different players. Mostly, they played together as a team without much of any penalties or showboat stuff. They went out there and did it, and they lined up to do it again. Houston is going to have a big year.

As for the QB race, Mettenburger clearly had the accuracy and the zip on the ball. His guidance downfield was consistent throughout his time in the game. Logan Gray may have actually had a better game than Aaron Murray. I saw poor decision making and bad throws too much from Murray to see him start at South Carolina. Everyone is forgetting the fourth variable in this QB equation in Hutson Mason. Mason could definitely push Murray for the number two position if he comes in as strong as he is being billed. Right now, it looks to be Zach’s position to lose. I saw no better QB on the field yesterday than ZM.

Other than Orson Charles with a couple of drops, the receivers looked real good too. OC will bring it when it counts. Jackson ran well, but giving the ball to Thomas up the middle is just asking for a fumble. He has good moves, and his best position seems to be as a situational player to get him the ball on the outside where he can fly. He just needs to do a better job of holding onto the ball.

I saw a lot of strengths in yesterday’s game, and I feel a whole lot better after this year’s G-Day game than last year’s game. I see some daylight for a fun season for all of us to enjoy. September cannot get here soon enough. Woof, Baby, Woof. Go Dogs!!
