G-Day chatter: Marlon Brown ‘will definitely be a major player for us this year’

ATHENS — Hello from Sanford Stadium, where the weather is beautiful (mostly sunny, 65 degrees)  for the alumni flag football game underway between the hedges and, oh yes, for the G-Day intra-squad game that starts at 2 p.m.

A couple of pregame notes (check back for more):

  • A lot of eyes will be on wide receiver Marlon Brown today.  After playing less last season than many folks had expected, he impressed coaches and teammates early this spring, then had a setback when a shoulder injury kept him sidelined or limited for close to two weeks. He participated fully in practice Thursday and is expected to play today. Thin at receiver, the Dogs need a breakout season from Brown this fall.

“I tell you, Marlon is coming along,” offensive coordinator Mike Bobo said a couple of days ago. “He’s smoothing out. When I say ’smoothing out,’ I mean ability to run routes, get in and out of cuts. He just looks more fluid. A lot has to do with being more comfortable with the offense and getting more confidence in his ability to execute things. And that comes from practice.

“So we’re definitely pleased with Marlon. I like the way he doesn’t back down. He’s very physical. . . .  Continue to fine-tune his route running, and I think he’ll definitely be a major player for us this year.”

  • If you’re wondering, quarterback Aaron Murray will be wearing a glove on his throwing hand for G-Day.

You know the story: Murray put on a glove when throwing on his own on a cold winter day . . . liked the way it felt . . . kept wearing it . . . and stuck with it throughout spring practice.

“I feel I’ve done well with it over the spring,” Murray said. “I feel like I had more control of the ball.”

His plan is to see if the glove works for him on hot summer days, then decide whether to wear it into the season.

We have our loins girded here in Jacksonville. Woof!

Michael Jackson also had a glove $%$#@

Are his hands too small?? I expect that they are because he is rather short at 5′11″ and maybe the glove does give him a comfort level. Scary it sounds to me.

I for one would like to see Aaron lose the glove.

Goooooooooooooooooo Dogs. Sic em!! Woof, woof. Tie or win, I love my Dogs. Let us shoot for a break though year at 11 -1 and WITH a win of Florida and a trip to the DOME !!!

Tim,
can you tell us what Richard Samuel’s injury is. I really hate he’s not going to be able to play. I watched all through high school and always felt he would be a great linebacker.

Here’s the word on why Richard Samuel isn’t playing today: He suffered a concussion in practice this week.

Why does the injury bug seem to be a big problem at UGA is it because of strength and conditioning or what?

Does anyone know if ESPN will lift the blackout and let everyone watch the game as a replay? Was the TD pass on the opening drive?

Mettenberger-to-Rhett McGowan (walk-on WR) ties game at 7-7. Gray has quarterbacked Red team for all three series so far. Murray has played two series and Mettenberger one for Black team.

I am not sure that Mettenberger is supposed to be looking this good. Could be a very interesting summer for the QB situation.

Caleb King is really injured. Play just went to the sideline, where he was standing, and he could barely get out of the way of the oncoming players.

Yes, Stinger, everyone is worried about your 240 lb white kid replacing Dwyer. Look, you had your shot, you had the most talent Gtu will have under Paul Johnson (thanks to Chan Gailey), and you pooped yourself against the worst UGA team in 15 years. You are not a factor in the state, in the ACC and most certainly not nationally.

After Mettenberger’s one game suspension, he’ll be the man running the show; and based on what he’s done today (and throughout spring) he deserves to be the starter. Just needs to keep himself out of trouble, grow-up quickly, and lead this talented Georgia team to the promise land.

Tony Grantham returns for his second year at Navy as the assistant outside linebackers coach and his sixth year overall.

Grantham spent fours years at the Naval Academy coaching the defensive line and outside linebackers from 2003-06. Navy posted a 35-15 record in Grantham’s four years in Annapolis, winning four-straight Commander-In-Chief’s Trophies and appearing in four-straight bowl games.
