How coaches divided up the Dogs for G-Day (with “Red” and “Black” team rosters)

Related report: Injuries sideline several Dogs as spring practice winds down.

ATHENS -– Georgia coaches Thursday divided the team into two squads for Saturday’s G-Day game, putting the first-string offense on the “Red” team and the first-string defense on the “Black” team.

Two caveats:

  • All three quarterbacks –-Aaron Murray, Logan Gray and Zach Mettenberger — are listed on the “Red” roster, but they will rotate between the two sides, coach Mark Richt said.
  • And the “Black” team will actually be wearing white jerseys (with black numbers).

The G-Day game –- the annual culmination of Georgia’s spring practice – begins at 2 p.m. Saturday in Sanford Stadium. Admission is free, and the game will be televised live on CSS.

The game will provide fans a glimpse of Georgia’s new 3-4 defense and quarterback competition, although, as usual in such games, coaches will be careful not to show the parts of the playbook they don’t want real opponents to see.

“I know the fans are probably waiting for a lot of this, that and the other,” Richt said. “We might do this and that, but not the other. We will do some things, but we definitely don’t want to show too much.”

The “Red” roster includes both of the top two tailbacks, Washaun Ealey and Caleb King, although King is not expected to play after missing the past four practices with a strained knee.  Backup tailbacks Carlton Thomas and Dontavius Jackson are on the “Black” roster.

The game will feature 12-minute quarters, Richt said.

Here are the rosters (with the caveat that even players who are out for the spring  — Trinton Sturdivant, Tanner Strickland, Justin Anderson, etc. — were assigned to a team even though they won’t be playing):

Murray and Mett will finally see some action in what 12 months? The South Carolina D is licking their chops and with Spurrier calling the plays on offense that will be loss #1.

“I know the fans are probably waiting for a lot of this, that and the other,” Richt said today. “We might do this and that, but not the other. We will do some things, but we definitely don’t want to show too much.” You mean we may finally see the new wrinkles in the vanilla offense. Will it be 3rd and long and Boo Boo calls a draw coach?

KimZ – Try to remember that those are 18 – 22 year olds inside those uniforms. I am sure that it has not been Sturdivants desire to be injured the last two years. He probably dreamed of playing in the Red and Black for a long time and I am sure that he is more disappointed than any of us fans that it has not worked out as he had hoped. I love the Dawgs as much as anyone, class of ‘86, but please keep things in perspective.

Hey here’s a legitimate question: Who is going to be UGA’s coach next season? Coming off of the statistically worse 3 seasons in Georgia history, a joke at OC, a new guy changing things on the D, and no one can figure out who the least worse QB is for the coming season… it looks like this could be CMR last at UGA. Does Kirby make the move one year after the coordinator offer? Really, what do you guys think? Richt is not gonna make it on another 8 win season that includes losing to the Kentucky’s and Vandy’s and of course Florida again is he?

Waitress!!…. Lets see, I’ll have a number 3, a number 8 on the side with plenty of ketchup and a slice of number 11 for dessert. And some “whipped” cream on that please….Oh yeah, and a large orange “G” to wash it all down.

Spring game at Ohio State 100,000….Bama 100,000….Penn State 100,000

Who really cares about this game. Most will be suspended for the first few games after another long summer, and again another beatdown by the UT’s, UF’s, and squeakers by UK and Vandy, and the cool-aide drinkers will tell us again how great CMR is and wait til next year. Enough is enough of this annual charade!!

Pago Flyer- bama didn’t have 100,000. I believe they had over 90,000 in Saban’s first yr., but that was just bc it was his first yr. THey still have a big crowd, but it hasn’t ever been quite the size of his first yr. Part of that has to do w/ the fact taht there isn’t much else to do in AL. though. They don’t have anything but college football in that state. Unlike in GA…where they also have multiple pro teams as well. UGA won’t have 18,000 either…last yr. they had over 40,000. It may not be the biggest crowd for a spring game, but it is just a spring game. They do however sell out every game during the season…in a much bigger stadium than a lot of teams have though.

pago flyer, the reason UGA doesn’t have 100,000 fans show up is because Sanford stadium holds 93,000 and the stadium is under construction. I guarantee this dawg fan will be there. Who else will show their support? ill at least be 18,004 with my family

KimZ Point taken. I thought that you were being hard on him but I get it now. He probably does need to give it up at this point, and concentrate on what his degree will help him to attain. I guess I missed the tone of your post. Sturdivant has been a DGD.

Realistic….two elite 11 quarterbacks…a defense with a respected NFL coodinator… 90 wins in 9 seasons…2 SEC titles…3 championship games…a number 2 national ranking…a number 3 national ranking…3 BCS bowls…a 7-2 bowl record…now, be realistic and tell me who you would replace him with who would have that kind of success?…we lost a no 2 NFL receiver…the number 1 running back in the draft and the overall number 1 pick quarterback..two of those left early…also, we had to endure Willie Martinez…it was bound to be a bad year…this one, on the other hand, I believe will return us to the afore mentioned success
